Abishag Cares for David
1
Now King David was old and well along in years, and though they covered him with blankets, he could not keep warm.

וְהַמֶּ֤לֶךְ דָּוִד֙ זָקֵ֔ן בָּ֖א בַּיָּמִ֑ים וַיְכַסֻּ֙הוּ֙ בַּבְּגָדִ֔ים וְלֹ֥א יִחַ֖ם לֽוֹ׃ wə·ham·me·leḵ dā·wiḏ zā·qên bā bay·yā·mîm way·ḵas·su·hū bab·bə·ḡā·ḏîm wə·lō yi·ḥam lōw — WLC · 1

So his servants said to him, “Let us search for a young virgin for our lord the king, to attend to [him] and care for him and lie by his side {to keep} him… warm.”

Then they searched throughout… Israel for a beautiful girl, and they found Abishag the Shunammite and brought her to the king.

The girl was unsurpassed… in beauty; she cared for the king and served him, but he had no relations with her.

Adonijah Usurps the Kingdom

At that time Adonijah, [David’s] son by Haggith, began to exalt himself, saying, “I will be king!” And he acquired… chariots and horsemen and fifty men to run ahead of him.

וַאֲדֹנִיָּ֧ה בֶן־ חַגִּ֛ית מִתְנַשֵּׂ֥א לֵאמֹ֖ר אֲנִ֣י אֶמְלֹ֑ךְ וַיַּ֣עַשׂ ל֗וֹ רֶ֚כֶב וּפָ֣רָשִׁ֔ים וַחֲמִשִּׁ֥ים אִ֖ישׁ רָצִ֥ים לְפָנָֽיו׃ wa·’ă·ḏō·nî·yāh ḇen- ḥag·gîṯ miṯ·naś·śê lê·mōr ’ă·nî ’em·lōḵ way·ya·‘aś lōw re·ḵeḇ ū·p̄ā·rā·šîm wa·ḥă·miš·šîm ’îš rā·ṣîm lə·p̄ā·nāw — WLC · 5

(His father had never… once reprimanded him by saying, “Why do you act this way?” [Adonijah was] also very handsome…, born next after Absalom.)

So [Adonijah] conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, who supported… [him].

וַיִּהְי֣וּ דְבָרָ֔יו עִ֚ם יוֹאָ֣ב בֶּן־ צְרוּיָ֔ה וְעִ֖ם אֶבְיָתָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֑ן וַֽיַּעְזְר֔וּ אַחֲרֵ֖י אֲדֹנִיָּֽה׃ way·yih·yū ḏə·ḇā·rāw ‘im yō·w·’āḇ ben- ṣə·rū·yāh wə·‘im ’eḇ·yā·ṯār hak·kō·hên way·ya‘·zə·rū ’a·ḥă·rê ’ă·ḏō·nî·yāh — WLC · 7

But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and David’s mighty men would not… join Adonijah.
𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤅𐤒 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤉 𐤅𐤓𐤏𐤉 𐤋𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤄𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤅
וְצָד֣וֹק הַ֠כֹּהֵן וּבְנָיָ֨הוּ בֶן־ יְהוֹיָדָ֜ע וְנָתָ֤ן הַנָּבִיא֙ וְשִׁמְעִ֣י וְרֵעִ֔י לְדָוִ֑ד וְהַגִּבּוֹרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹ֥א הָי֖וּ עִם־ אֲדֹנִיָּֽהוּ׃ wə·ṣā·ḏō·wq hak·kō·hên ū·ḇə·nā·yā·hū ḇen- yə·hō·w·yā·ḏā‘ wə·nā·ṯān han·nā·ḇî wə·šim·‘î wə·rê·‘î lə·ḏā·wiḏ wə·hag·gib·bō·w·rîm ’ă·šer lō hā·yū ‘im- ’ă·ḏō·nî·yā·hū — WLC · 8

And Adonijah sacrificed sheep, oxen, and fattened calves near the stone of Zoheleth, which is next to vvv En-rogel. He invited all his royal brothers… and all the men of Judah who were servants of the king.

אֲדֹנִיָּ֗הוּ וַיִּזְבַּ֣ח צֹ֤אן וּבָקָר֙ וּמְרִ֔יא עִ֚ם אֶ֣בֶן הַזֹּחֶ֔לֶת אֲשֶׁר־ אֵ֖צֶל עֵ֣ין רֹגֵ֑ל וַיִּקְרָ֗א אֶת־ כָּל־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֶחָיו֙ בְּנֵ֣י וּלְכָל־ אַנְשֵׁ֥י יְהוּדָ֖ה עַבְדֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ ’ă·ḏō·nî·yā·hū way·yiz·baḥ ṣōn ū·ḇā·qār ū·mə·rî ‘im ’e·ḇen haz·zō·ḥe·leṯ ’ă·šer- ’ê·ṣel ‘ên rō·ḡêl way·yiq·rā ’eṯ- kāl- ham·me·leḵ ’e·ḥāw bə·nê ū·lə·ḵāl- ’an·šê yə·hū·ḏāh ‘aḇ·ḏê ham·me·leḵ — WLC · 9

But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men, or his brother Solomon.

וְֽאֶת־ לֹ֥א קָרָֽא׃ נָתָן֩ הַנָּבִ֨יא וּבְנָיָ֜הוּ וְאֶת־ הַגִּבּוֹרִ֛ים וְאֶת־ אָחִ֖יו שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה wə·’eṯ- lō qā·rā nā·ṯān han·nā·ḇî ū·ḇə·nā·yā·hū wə·’eṯ- hag·gib·bō·w·rîm wə·’eṯ- ’ā·ḥîw šə·lō·mōh — WLC · 10
Nathan and Bathsheba before David

Then Nathan said to vvv Bathsheba the mother of Solomon -, “Have you not heard that Adonijah son of Haggith has become king, and our lord David does not know it?
𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤕 𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤀𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤇𐤂𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏
נָתָ֗ן וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־ בַּת־ שֶׁ֤בַע אֵם־ שְׁלֹמֹה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הֲל֣וֹא שָׁמַ֔עַתְּ כִּ֥י אֲדֹנִיָּ֣הוּ בֶן־ חַגִּ֑ית מָלַ֖ךְ וַאֲדֹנֵ֥ינוּ דָוִ֖ד לֹ֥א יָדָֽע׃ nā·ṯān way·yō·mer ’el- baṯ- še·ḇa‘ ’êm- šə·lō·mōh lê·mōr hă·lō·w šā·ma·‘at kî ’ă·ḏō·nî·yā·hū ḇen- ḥag·gîṯ mā·laḵ wa·’ă·ḏō·nê·nū ḏā·wiḏ lō yā·ḏā‘ — WLC · 11

Now please, come and let me advise you. Save your own life and the life of your son Solomon.

וְעַתָּ֕ה נָ֖א לְכִ֛י אִיעָצֵ֥ךְ עֵצָ֑ה וּמַלְּטִי֙ אֶת־ נַפְשֵׁ֔ךְ וְאֶת־ נֶ֥פֶשׁ בְּנֵ֖ךְ שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ wə·‘at·tāh nā lə·ḵî ’î·‘ā·ṣêḵ ‘ê·ṣāh ū·mal·lə·ṭî ’eṯ- nap̄·šêḵ wə·’eṯ- ne·p̄eš bə·nêḵ šə·lō·mōh — WLC · 12

Go at once to King David and say -, ‘My lord the king, did you not swear to your maidservant -, “Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’

לְכִ֞י וּבֹ֣אִי׀ אֶל־ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ דָּוִ֗ד וְאָמַ֤רְתְּ אֵלָיו֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ אַתָּ֞ה הֲלֹֽא־ נִשְׁבַּ֤עְתָּ לַאֲמָֽתְךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כִּֽי־ בְנֵךְ֙ שְׁלֹמֹ֤ה יִמְלֹ֣ךְ אַחֲרַ֔י וְה֖וּא יֵשֵׁ֣ב עַל־ כִּסְאִ֑י וּמַדּ֖וּעַ אֲדֹנִיָֽהוּ׃ מָלַ֥ךְ lə·ḵî ū·ḇō·’î ’el- ham·me·leḵ dā·wiḏ wə·’ā·mart ’ê·lāw ’ă·ḏō·nî ham·me·leḵ ’at·tāh hă·lō- niš·ba‘·tā la·’ă·mā·ṯə·ḵā lê·mōr kî- ḇə·nêḵ šə·lō·mōh yim·lōḵ ’a·ḥă·ray wə·hū yê·šêḇ ‘al- kis·’î ū·mad·dū·a‘ ʾă·ḏō·ni·yå̄·hū mā·laḵ — WLC · 13

Then, while you are still there speaking with the king, I will come in after you and confirm your words.”

הִנֵּ֗ה עוֹדָ֛ךְ שָׁ֖ם מְדַבֶּ֥רֶת עִם־ הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַאֲנִי֙ אָב֣וֹא אַחֲרַ֔יִךְ וּמִלֵּאתִ֖י אֶת־ דְּבָרָֽיִךְ׃ hin·nêh ‘ō·w·ḏāḵ šām mə·ḏab·be·reṯ ‘im- ham·me·leḵ wa·’ă·nî ’ā·ḇō·w ’a·ḥă·ra·yiḵ ū·mil·lê·ṯî ’eṯ- də·ḇā·rā·yiḵ — WLC · 14

vvv So Bathsheba went to see the king in his bedroom. Since the king was very old, Abishag the Shunammite was serving him.

vvv And Bathsheba bowed down in homage to the king, [who] asked, “What is your desire?”

“My lord,” she replied “you yourself swore to your maidservant by the LORD your God: ‘Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne.’

But now, behold, Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, do not know it.

And he has sacrificed an abundance of oxen, fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the other sons of the king, as well as Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army. But he has not invited your servant Solomon.

And as for you, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel [are] upon you to tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.

Otherwise, when my lord the king rests with his fathers,… I and my son Solomon will be counted as criminals.”

And just then, while [Bathsheba] was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet arrived.

So the king was told,… “Nathan the prophet is here.” And [Nathan] went in and bowed facedown… before the king.

Then Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, along with the Cherethites and Pelethites, went down and set Solomon on King David’s mule, and they escorted him to Gihon.

Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tabernacle and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the ram’s horn, and all the people proclaimed, “Long live King Solomon!”

Now Adonijah and all his guests - were finishing their feast… when they heard the sound of the ram’s horn. “Why [is] the city in such a loud uproar?” asked Joab -.

As he was speaking, suddenly Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest arrived. “Come in,” said Adonijah, “for you [are] a man of valor. You must be bringing good news.”

Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon, and they have gone up from there with rejoicing that rings out in the city. That is the noise you hear.

Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne.

The king’s servants have also gone to congratulate our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than your own name, and may He make his throne greater than your throne.’ And the king has bowed in worship on his bed,

But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, got up and went to take hold of the horns of the altar.

It was reported to Solomon: “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon,… and he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon first swear to me not to put his servant to the sword.’”

And Solomon replied, “If he is a man of character, not a single hair of his will fall to the ground. But if evil is found in him, he will die.”

So King Solomon summoned [Adonijah] down from the altar, and he came and bowed down before King Solomon, [who] said to him, “Go to your home.”
