Abijam Reigns in Judah
1
In the eighteenth… year of the reign of Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijam became king of Judah,
𐤔𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤁𐤍 𐤍𐤁𐤈 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄
שְׁמֹנֶ֣ה עֶשְׂרֵ֔ה וּבִשְׁנַת֙ לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ יָרָבְעָ֣ם בֶּן־ נְבָ֑ט אֲבִיָּ֖ם מָלַ֥ךְ עַל־ יְהוּדָֽה׃ šə·mō·neh ‘eś·rêh ū·ḇiš·naṯ lam·me·leḵ yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām ben- nə·ḇāṭ ’ă·ḇî·yām mā·laḵ ‘al- yə·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 1

and he reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother’s name was Maacah daughter of Abishalom.

מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם שָׁלֹ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֔ים אִמּ֔וֹ וְשֵׁ֣ם מַעֲכָ֖ה בַּת־ אֲבִישָׁלֽוֹם׃ mā·laḵ bî·rū·šā·lim šā·lōš šā·nîm ’im·mōw wə·šêm ma·‘ă·ḵāh baṯ- ’ă·ḇî·šā·lō·wm — WLC · 2

And Abijam walked in all the sins that his father before him had committed, and his heart was not as fully devoted to the LORD his God as the heart of David his forefather [had been].

Nevertheless, for the sake of David, the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem by raising up a son to succeed him and to make Jerusalem {strong}.

כִּ֚י לְמַ֣עַן דָּוִ֔ד יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהָ֥יו נָתַן֩ ל֛וֹ נִ֖יר בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם לְהָקִ֤ים אֶת־ בְּנוֹ֙ אַחֲרָ֔יו וּֽלְהַעֲמִ֖יד אֶת־ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ kî lə·ma·‘an dā·wiḏ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāw nā·ṯan lōw nîr bî·rū·šā·lim lə·hā·qîm ’eṯ- bə·nōw ’a·ḥă·rāw ū·lə·ha·‘ă·mîḏ ’eṯ- yə·rū·šā·lim — WLC · 4

For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD and had not turned aside from anything [the LORD] commanded all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

אֲשֶׁ֨ר דָוִ֛ד אֶת־ עָשָׂ֥ה הַיָּשָׁ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְלֹֽא־ סָ֞ר מִכֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־ צִוָּ֗הוּ כֹּ֚ל יְמֵ֣י חַיָּ֔יו רַ֕ק בִּדְבַ֖ר אוּרִיָּ֥ה הַחִתִּֽי׃ ’ă·šer ḏā·wiḏ ’eṯ- ‘ā·śāh hay·yā·šār bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh wə·lō- sār mik·kōl ’ă·šer- ṣiw·wā·hū kōl yə·mê ḥay·yāw raq biḏ·ḇar ’ū·rî·yāh ha·ḥit·tî — WLC · 5

And there was war between [the houses of] Rehoboam… and Jeroboam all the days of [Abijam’s] life.

הָיְתָ֧ה וּמִלְחָמָ֨ה בֵין־ רְחַבְעָ֛ם וּבֵ֥ין יָרָבְעָ֖ם כָּל־ יְמֵ֥י חַיָּֽיו׃ hā·yə·ṯāh ū·mil·ḥā·māh ḇên- rə·ḥaḇ·‘ām ū·ḇên yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām kāl- yə·mê ḥay·yāw — WLC · 6

As for the rest of the acts of Abijam, along with all his accomplishments…, [are] they not written in the Book of the Chronicles… of the Kings of Judah? And there was war between Abijam… and Jeroboam.

וְיֶ֨תֶר דִּבְרֵ֤י אֲבִיָּם֙ וְכָל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֔ה הֵ֣ם הֲלֽוֹא־ כְּתוּבִ֗ים עַל־ סֵ֛פֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י הַיָּמִ֖ים לְמַלְכֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה הָיְתָ֛ה וּמִלְחָמָ֥ה בֵּ֥ין אֲבִיָּ֖ם וּבֵ֥ין יָרָבְעָֽם׃ wə·ye·ṯer diḇ·rê ’ă·ḇî·yām wə·ḵāl ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh hêm hă·lō·w- kə·ṯū·ḇîm ‘al- sê·p̄er diḇ·rê hay·yā·mîm lə·mal·ḵê yə·hū·ḏāh hā·yə·ṯāh ū·mil·ḥā·māh bên ’ă·ḇî·yām ū·ḇên yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām — WLC · 7

And Abijam rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David, and his son Asa reigned in his place.

Asa Reigns in Judah

In the twentieth year of Jeroboam’s reign over Israel, Asa became king… of Judah,
𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄
עֶשְׂרִ֔ים וּבִשְׁנַ֣ת לְיָרָבְעָ֖ם מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אָסָ֖א מָלַ֥ךְ מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה׃ ‘eś·rîm ū·ḇiš·naṯ lə·yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·sā mā·laḵ me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 9

and he reigned in Jerusalem forty-one… years. His grandmother’s name was Maacah daughter of Abishalom.

מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְאַרְבָּעִ֤ים וְאַחַת֙ שָׁנָ֔ה אִמּ֔וֹ וְשֵׁ֣ם מַעֲכָ֖ה בַּת־ אֲבִישָׁלֽוֹם׃ mā·laḵ bî·rū·šā·lim wə·’ar·bā·‘îm wə·’a·ḥaṯ šā·nāh ’im·mōw wə·šêm ma·‘ă·ḵāh baṯ- ’ă·ḇî·šā·lō·wm — WLC · 10

And Asa did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, as his father David [had done].
𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤄𐤉𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤃𐤅𐤃
אָסָ֛א וַיַּ֧עַשׂ הַיָּשָׁ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה אָבִֽיו׃ כְּדָוִ֖ד ’ā·sā way·ya·‘aś hay·yā·šār bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh ’ā·ḇîw kə·ḏā·wiḏ — WLC · 11

He banished the male shrine prostitutes from the land and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.
𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤔𐤅
וַיַּעֲבֵ֥ר הַקְּדֵשִׁ֖ים מִן־ הָאָ֑רֶץ וַיָּ֙סַר֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ הַגִּלֻּלִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲבֹתָֽיו׃ עָשׂ֖וּ way·ya·‘ă·ḇêr haq·qə·ḏê·šîm min- hā·’ā·reṣ way·yā·sar ’eṯ- kāl- hag·gil·lu·lîm ’ă·šer ’ă·ḇō·ṯāw ‘ā·śū — WLC · 12

He also removed his grandmother Maacah from [her position as] queen mother because she had made a detestable Asherah pole. Asa chopped down the pole and burned it in the Kidron Valley.
𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤊𐤄 𐤌𐤂𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤐𐤋𐤑𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤓𐤕 𐤌𐤐𐤋𐤑𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤐 𐤒𐤃𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤇𐤋
וְגַ֣ם׀ אֶת־ וַיְסִרֶ֙הָ֙ אִמּ֗וֹ מַעֲכָ֣ה מִגְּבִירָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ עָשְׂתָ֥ה מִפְלֶ֖צֶת לָאֲשֵׁרָ֑ה אָסָא֙ אֶת־ וַיִּכְרֹ֤ת מִפְלַצְתָּ֔הּ וַיִּשְׂרֹ֖ף קִדְרֽוֹן׃ בְּנַ֥חַל wə·ḡam ’eṯ- way·si·re·hā ’im·mōw ma·‘ă·ḵāh mig·gə·ḇî·rāh ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śə·ṯāh mip̄·le·ṣeṯ lā·’ă·šê·rāh ’ā·sā ’eṯ- way·yiḵ·rōṯ mip̄·laṣ·tāh way·yiś·rōp̄ qiḏ·rō·wn bə·na·ḥal — WLC · 13

The high places were not removed, but Asa’s heart was fully devoted to the LORD all his days.

וְהַבָּמ֖וֹת לֹא־ סָ֑רוּ רַ֣ק אָסָ֗א לְבַב־ הָיָ֥ה שָׁלֵ֛ם עִם־ יְהוָ֖ה כָּל־ יָמָֽיו׃ wə·hab·bā·mō·wṯ lō- sā·rū raq ’ā·sā lə·ḇaḇ- hā·yāh šā·lêm ‘im- Yah·weh kāl- yā·māw — WLC · 14

And he brought into the house of the LORD the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated.

War between Asa and Baasha

Now there was war between Asa… and Baasha king of Israel throughout their days.
𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤌
הָיְתָ֜ה וּמִלְחָמָ֨ה בֵּ֣ין אָסָ֗א וּבֵ֛ין בַּעְשָׁ֥א מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כָּל־ יְמֵיהֶֽם׃ hā·yə·ṯāh ū·mil·ḥā·māh bên ’ā·sā ū·ḇên ba‘·šā me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl kāl- yə·mê·hem — WLC · 16

Baasha king of Israel went to war against Judah and fortified Ramah vvv to prevent [anyone] from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.
𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤕𐤕 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤅𐤁𐤀 𐤋𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄
בַּעְשָׁ֤א מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיַּ֨עַל עַל־ יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיִּ֖בֶן אֶת־ הָרָמָ֑ה לְבִלְתִּ֗י תֵּ֚ת יֹצֵ֣א וָבָ֔א לְאָסָ֖א מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה׃ ba‘·šā me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl way·ya·‘al ‘al- yə·hū·ḏāh way·yi·ḇen ’eṯ- hā·rā·māh lə·ḇil·tî têṯ yō·ṣê wā·ḇā lə·’ā·sā me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 17

So Asa withdrew all the silver and gold that remained in the treasuries of the house of the LORD and the royal palace. He entrusted it… to his servants - and sent them with this message to vvv Ben-hadad son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, the king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus:
𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤅𐤄𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤄𐤍𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤅𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍 𐤄𐤃𐤃 𐤁𐤍 𐤈𐤁𐤓𐤌𐤍 𐤁𐤍 𐤇𐤆𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤃𐤌𐤔𐤒
אָ֠סָא אֶת־ וַיִּקַּ֣ח כָּל־ הַכֶּ֨סֶף וְהַזָּהָ֜ב הַֽנּוֹתָרִ֣ים׀ בְּאוֹצְר֣וֹת בֵּית־ יְהוָ֗ה וְאֶת־ אֽוֹצְרוֹת֙ מֶלֶךְ בֵּ֣ית וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖ם בְּיַד־ עֲבָדָ֑יו הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ אָסָ֗א וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֞ם לֵאמֹֽר׃ אֶל־ בֶּן־ הֲ֠דַד בֶּן־ טַבְרִמֹּ֤ן בֶּן־ חֶזְיוֹן֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ אֲרָ֔ם הַיֹּשֵׁ֥ב בְּדַמֶּ֖שֶׂק ’ā·sā ’eṯ- way·yiq·qaḥ kāl- hak·ke·sep̄ wə·haz·zā·hāḇ han·nō·w·ṯā·rîm bə·’ō·wṣ·rō·wṯ bêṯ- Yah·weh wə·’eṯ- ’ō·wṣ·rō·wṯ mɛ·lɛḵ bêṯ way·yit·tə·nêm bə·yaḏ- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw ham·me·leḵ ’ā·sā way·yiš·lā·ḥêm lê·mōr ’el- ben- hă·ḏaḏ ben- ṭaḇ·rim·mōn ben- ḥez·yō·wn me·leḵ ’ă·rām hay·yō·šêḇ bə·ḏam·me·śeq — WLC · 18

“[Let there be] a treaty between me and you [as there was] between… my father… and your father. See, I have sent you a gift of silver and gold. Now go and break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me.”

When Baasha learned of this, he stopped fortifying Ramah and withdrew to Tirzah.

Then King Asa summoned all [the men] of Judah, with no exceptions, and they carried away the stones of Ramah and the timbers Baasha had used for building. And with [these materials] King Asa built up Geba of Benjamin, as well as Mizpah.

Now the rest… of the acts of Asa, along with all his might, all his accomplishments…, and the cities he built, [are] they not written in the Book of the Chronicles… of the Kings of Judah? vvv In his old age, however, he became diseased in his feet.

And Asa rested with his fathers and was buried with [them] in the city of his father David, and his son Jehoshaphat reigned in his place.

In the second year of Asa’s reign over Judah, Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel, and he reigned - two years.

Then Baasha son of Ahijah of the house of Issachar conspired against Nadab, and Baasha struck him down at Gibbethon of the Philistines while Nadab and all Israel were besieging… [the city].

As soon as Baasha became king, he struck down the entire household of Jeroboam. He did not leave to Jeroboam… anyone who breathed, but destroyed them all according to the word that the LORD had spoken through His servant Ahijah the Shilonite,

And [Baasha] did evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the way of Jeroboam and in his sin, which he had caused Israel to commit. -
