Chapter 20

Ben-hadad Attacks Samaria

vvv Now Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two… kings with their horses and chariots, he marched up, besieged… Samaria, and waged war against it.

𐤅𐤁𐤍 𐤄𐤃𐤃 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤒𐤁𐤑 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤎𐤅𐤎 𐤅𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤁𐤄

וּבֶן־ הֲדַ֣ד מֶֽלֶךְ־ אֲרָ֗ם קָבַץ֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ חֵיל֔וֹ אִתּ֖וֹ וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים וּשְׁנַ֥יִם מֶ֛לֶךְ וְס֣וּס וָרָ֑כֶב וַיַּ֗עַל וַיָּ֙צַר֙ עַל־ שֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם בָּֽהּ׃ ū·ḇen- hă·ḏaḏ me·leḵ- ’ă·rām qā·ḇaṣ ’eṯ- kāl- ḥê·lōw ’it·tōw ū·šə·lō·šîm ū·šə·na·yim me·leḵ wə·sūs wā·rā·ḵeḇ way·ya·‘al way·yā·ṣar ‘al- šō·mə·rō·wn way·yil·lā·ḥem bāhWLC · 1

Then he sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel,

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤀𐤁 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח מַלְאָכִ֛ים הָעִֽירָה׃ אֶל־ אַחְאָ֥ב מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל way·yiš·laḥ mal·’ā·ḵîm hā·‘î·rāh ’el- ’aḥ·’āḇ me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 2

saying “This is what vvv Ben-hadad says: ‘Your silver and gold are mine, and your best wives and children are mine!’”

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤄𐤃𐤃 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤎𐤐𐤊 𐤅𐤆𐤄𐤁𐤊 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤉

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ כֹּ֚ה בֶּן־ הֲדַ֔ד אָמַ֣ר כַּסְפְּךָ֥ וּֽזְהָבְךָ֖ ה֑וּא לִֽי־ הַטּוֹבִ֖ים וְנָשֶׁ֧יךָ וּבָנֶ֛יךָ הֵֽם׃ לִי־ way·yō·mer lōw kōh ben- hă·ḏaḏ ’ā·mar kas·pə·ḵā ū·zə·hā·ḇə·ḵā hū lî- haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇîm wə·nā·še·ḵā ū·ḇā·ne·ḵā hêm lî-WLC · 3

And the king of Israel… replied, “Just as you say, my lord the king: vvv I am yours, along with all that I have.”

𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤉

מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיֹּ֔אמֶר וַיַּ֤עַן כִּדְבָרְךָ֖ אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ לְךָ֥ אֲנִ֖י וְכָל־ אֲשֶׁר־ לִֽי׃ me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl way·yō·mer way·ya·‘an kiḏ·ḇā·rə·ḵā ’ă·ḏō·nî ham·me·leḵ lə·ḵā ’ă·nî wə·ḵāl ’ă·šer- lîWLC · 4

The messengers came back and said, “This is what Ben-hadad says ‘I have sent to you… to demand… - your silver, your gold, your wives, and your children.

הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים וַיָּשֻׁ֙בוּ֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ כֹּֽה־ הֲדַ֖ד אָמַ֥ר בֶּן־ שָׁלַ֤חְתִּי אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לֵאמֹ֑ר כִּֽי־ תִתֵּֽן׃ לִ֥י כַּסְפְּךָ֧ וּזְהָבְךָ֛ וְנָשֶׁ֥יךָ וּבָנֶ֖יךָ ham·mal·’ā·ḵîm way·yā·šu·ḇū way·yō·mə·rū kōh- hă·ḏaḏ ’ā·mar ben- šā·laḥ·tî ’ê·le·ḵā lê·mōr lê·mōr kî- ṯit·tên lî kas·pə·ḵā ū·zə·hā·ḇə·ḵā wə·nā·še·ḵā ū·ḇā·ne·ḵāWLC · 5

But about this time tomorrow I will send my servants to search your palace and the houses of your servants. They will seize… and carry away all that is precious to you.’”

כִּ֣י׀ אִם־ כָּעֵ֣ת מָחָ֗ר אֶשְׁלַ֤ח אֶת־ עֲבָדַי֙ אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְחִפְּשׂוּ֙ אֶת־ בֵּ֣יתְךָ֔ וְאֵ֖ת בָּתֵּ֣י עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ יָשִׂ֥ימוּ בְיָדָ֖ם וְלָקָֽחוּ׃ כָּל־ וְהָיָה֙ מַחְמַ֣ד עֵינֶ֔יךָ kî ’im- kā·‘êṯ mā·ḥār ’eš·laḥ ’eṯ- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏay ’ê·le·ḵā wə·ḥip·pə·śū ’eṯ- bê·ṯə·ḵā wə·’êṯ bāt·tê ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā yā·śî·mū ḇə·yā·ḏām wə·lā·qā·ḥū kāl- wə·hā·yāh maḥ·maḏ ‘ê·ne·ḵāWLC · 6

Then the king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said, “Please take note and see that this [man] is looking for trouble, for when he demanded… my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold, I did not deny him.”

מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיִּקְרָ֤א לְכָל־ זִקְנֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ נָ֣א דְּעֽוּ־ וּרְא֔וּ כִּ֥י זֶ֣ה מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ רָעָ֖ה כִּֽי־ שָׁלַ֨ח אֵלַ֜י לְנָשַׁ֤י וּלְבָנַי֙ וּלְכַסְפִּ֣י וְלִזְהָבִ֔י וְלֹ֥א מָנַ֖עְתִּי מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl way·yiq·rā lə·ḵāl ziq·nê hā·’ā·reṣ way·yō·mer nā də·‘ū- ū·rə·’ū kî zeh mə·ḇaq·qêš rā·‘āh kî- šā·laḥ ’ê·lay lə·nā·šay ū·lə·ḇā·nay ū·lə·ḵas·pî wə·liz·hā·ḇî wə·lō mā·na‘·tî mim·men·nūWLC · 7

And the elders and the people all said -, “Do not listen to him or consent to his terms.”

𐤄𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤅𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤕𐤀𐤁𐤄

הַזְּקֵנִ֖ים וְכָל־ הָעָ֑ם כָּל־ וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֵלָ֛יו אַל־ תִּשְׁמַ֖ע וְל֥וֹא תֹאבֶֽה׃ haz·zə·qê·nîm wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām kāl- way·yō·mə·rū ’ê·lāw ’al- tiš·ma‘ wə·lō·w ṯō·ḇehWLC · 8

So [Ahab] answered the messengers vvv of Ben-hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you demanded of your servant the first time I will do, but this thing I cannot… do.’” So the messengers departed and relayed the message to [Ben-hadad]…

וַיֹּ֜אמֶר לְמַלְאֲכֵ֣י בֶן־ הֲדַ֗ד אִמְר֞וּ לַֽאדֹנִ֤י הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ כֹּל֩ אֲשֶׁר־ שָׁלַ֨חְתָּ אֶל־ עַבְדְּךָ֤ בָרִֽאשֹׁנָה֙ אֶעֱשֶׂ֔ה הַזֶּ֔ה וְהַדָּבָ֣ר לֹ֥א אוּכַ֖ל לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ דָּבָֽר׃ וַיְשִׁבֻ֖הוּ way·yō·mer lə·mal·’ă·ḵê ḇen- hă·ḏaḏ ’im·rū la·ḏō·nî ham·me·leḵ kōl ’ă·šer- šā·laḥ·tā ’el- ‘aḇ·də·ḵā ḇā·ri·šō·nāh ’e·‘ĕ·śeh haz·zeh wə·had·dā·ḇār lō ’ū·ḵal la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ham·mal·’ā·ḵîm way·yê·lə·ḵū dā·ḇār way·ši·ḇu·hūWLC · 9

Then Ben-hadad sent another message to [Ahab]: “May the gods deal with me, and ever so severely, if [enough] dust remains of Samaria for each of my men - [to have] a handful.”

הֲדַ֔ד וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח בֶּן־ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ אֱלֹהִ֖ים כֹּֽה־ יַעֲשׂ֥וּן לִ֛י וְכֹ֣ה יוֹסִ֑פוּ אִם־ עֲפַ֣ר יִשְׂפֹּק֙ שֹׁמְר֔וֹן לְכָל־ הָעָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּרַגְלָֽי׃ לִשְׁעָלִ֕ים hă·ḏaḏ way·yiš·laḥ ben- way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw ’ĕ·lō·hîm kōh- ya·‘ă·śūn lî wə·ḵōh yō·w·si·p̄ū ’im- ‘ă·p̄ar yiś·pōq šō·mə·rō·wn lə·ḵāl hā·‘ām ’ă·šer bə·raḡ·lāy liš·‘ā·lîmWLC · 10

And the king of Israel… replied, “Tell him: ‘The one putting on [his armor] should not boast like one taking [it off].’”

מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר וַיַּ֤עַן דַּבְּר֔וּ חֹגֵ֖ר אַל־ יִתְהַלֵּ֥ל כִּמְפַתֵּֽחַ׃ me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl way·yō·mer way·ya·‘an dab·bə·rū ḥō·ḡêr ’al- yiṯ·hal·lêl kim·p̄at·tê·aḥWLC · 11

  • Ben-hadad received this message while he and the kings were drinking… in their tents, and he said to his servants, “Take your positions.” So they stationed themselves against the city.

Ahab Defeats Ben-hadad

Meanwhile a prophet approached… Ahab king of Israel and declared, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Do you see this entire great army? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand this very day, and you will know that I am the LORD.’”

וְהִנֵּ֣ה׀ אֶחָ֗ד נָבִ֣יא נִגַּשׁ֮ אֶל־ אַחְאָ֣ב מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר הְֽרָאִ֔יתָ אֵ֛ת הַזֶּ֑ה כָּל־ הַגָּד֖וֹל הֶהָמ֥וֹן הִנְנִ֨י נֹתְנ֤וֹ בְיָֽדְךָ֙ הַיּ֔וֹם וְיָדַעְתָּ֖ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ wə·hin·nêh ’e·ḥāḏ nā·ḇî nig·gaš ’el- ’aḥ·’āḇ me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl way·yō·mer kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar hə·rā·’î·ṯā ’êṯ haz·zeh kāl- hag·gā·ḏō·wl he·hā·mō·wn hin·nî nō·ṯə·nōw ḇə·yā·ḏə·ḵā hay·yō·wm wə·yā·ḏa‘·tā kî- ’ă·nî Yah·wehWLC · 13

“By whom?” Ahab asked. And the prophet replied, “This is what the LORD says: ‘By the young officers of the district governors.’” “Who will start the battle?” asked [Ahab]. “You [will],” answered the prophet.

בְּמִ֔י אַחְאָב֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר בְּנַעֲרֵ֖י הַמְּדִינ֑וֹת שָׂרֵ֣י מִֽי־ יֶאְסֹ֥ר הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה וַיֹּ֛אמֶר אָֽתָּה׃ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר bə·mî ’aḥ·’āḇ way·yō·mer way·yō·mer kōh- Yah·weh ’ā·mar bə·na·‘ă·rê ham·mə·ḏî·nō·wṯ śā·rê mî- ye’·sōr ham·mil·ḥā·māh way·yō·mer ’āt·tāh way·yō·merWLC · 14

So Ahab assembled the young officers of the district governors, and there were 232 men… And after them, he assembled [the rest of] the Israelite… troops, 7,000 {}… in all.

And the young officers of the district governors marched out first… Now Ben-hadad had sent out scouts who reported to him “Men are marching out of Samaria.”

“If they have marched out in peace,” he said, “take them alive. Even if they have marched out for war, take them alive.”

Meanwhile, these young officers of the district governors marched out of the city, with the army behind them,

and each one struck down his opponent. So the Arameans fled, with the Israelites in pursuit. But Ben-hadad king of Aram escaped on horseback with the cavalry.

Then the king of Israel marched out and attacked the horses and chariots, inflicting a great slaughter on the Arameans.

Afterward, the prophet… approached the king of Israel and said “Go and strengthen [your position], and take note… what you must do, for in the spring… the king of Aram will come up against you.”

Meanwhile, the servants of the king of Aram said to him, “Their gods [are] gods of the hills. That is why… they prevailed over us. Instead, we should fight them on the plains; surely then we will prevail

So do this: Dismiss all the kings from their positions and replace them… with other officers.

And you must raise an army like the [one] you have lost— horse for horse and chariot for chariot— so we can fight [the Israelites] on the plain, where we will surely… prevail…” And [the king] approved their plan and acted accordingly.

The Israelites… also mobilized, gathered supplies, and marched out to meet them. The Israelites… camped before them like two small flocks of goats, while the Arameans covered the countryside.

Then the man of God approached the king of Israel and said “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because the Arameans have said that the LORD is a god of the hills and not of the valleys…, I will deliver all this great army into your hand. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”

For seven days [the armies] camped opposite each other…, and on the seventh day the battle ensued, and the Israelites… struck down the Arameans— a hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day.

Ahab Spares Ben-hadad

Then the servants of [Ben-hadad] said to him, “Look now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel… are merciful… -. Let us go out to the king of Israel [with]… sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will spare your life.”

עֲבָדָיו֒ וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָיו֮ הִנֵּֽה־ נָ֣א שָׁמַ֔עְנוּ כִּ֗י מַלְכֵי֙ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּֽי־ חֶ֖סֶד הֵ֑ם מַלְכֵ֥י וְנֵצֵא֙ אֶל־ מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל נָשִׂ֣ימָה נָּא֩ שַׂקִּ֨ים בְּמָתְנֵ֜ינוּ וַחֲבָלִ֣ים בְּרֹאשֵׁ֗נוּ אוּלַ֖י יְחַיֶּ֥ה אֶת־ נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃ ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw way·yō·mə·rū ’ê·lāw hin·nêh- nā šā·ma‘·nū kî mal·ḵê bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl kî- ḥe·seḏ hêm mal·ḵê wə·nê·ṣê ’el- me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êl nā·śî·māh nā śaq·qîm bə·mā·ṯə·nê·nū wa·ḥă·ḇā·lîm bə·rō·šê·nū ’ū·lay yə·ḥay·yeh ’eṯ- nap̄·še·ḵāWLC · 31

So [with] sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant vvv Ben-hadad says, ‘Please spare my life.’” And [the king] answered, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”

וַיַּחְגְּרוּ֩ שַׂקִּ֨ים בְּמָתְנֵיהֶ֜ם וַחֲבָלִ֣ים בְּרָאשֵׁיהֶ֗ם וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ אֶל־ מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ עַבְדְּךָ֧ בֶן־ הֲדַ֛ד אָמַ֖ר נָ֣א תְּחִֽי־ נַפְשִׁ֑י וַיֹּ֛אמֶר הַעוֹדֶ֥נּוּ חַ֖י הֽוּא׃ אָחִ֥י way·yaḥ·gə·rū śaq·qîm bə·mā·ṯə·nê·hem wa·ḥă·ḇā·lîm bə·rā·šê·hem way·yā·ḇō·’ū ’el- me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êl way·yō·mə·rū ‘aḇ·də·ḵā ḇen- hă·ḏaḏ ’ā·mar nā tə·ḥî- nap̄·šî way·yō·mer ha·‘ō·w·ḏen·nū ḥay hū ’ā·ḥîWLC · 32

Now the men were looking for a sign of hope, and they quickly grasped [at this word]… and replied, “Yes, your brother vvv Ben-hadad.” “Go and get him!” said [the king]. vvv Then Ben-hadad came out -, and Ahab had him come up into his chariot.

Ben-hadad said to him, “I will restore the cities my father took from your father; you may set up your own marketplaces in Damascus, as my father [did] in Samaria.” “By this treaty I release you,” [Ahab replied]. So he made a treaty with him and sent him away.

A Prophet Reproves Ahab

Meanwhile, by the word of the LORD, vvv one of the sons of the prophets said to his companion, “Strike me, please!” But [the man] refused… to strike him.

𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤌𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤍𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤀𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤋𐤄𐤊𐤕𐤅

בִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה וְאִ֨ישׁ אֶחָ֜ד מִבְּנֵ֣י הַנְּבִיאִ֗ים אָמַ֧ר אֶל־ רֵעֵ֛הוּ הַכֵּ֣ינִי נָ֑א וַיְמָאֵ֥ן הָאִ֖ישׁ לְהַכֹּתֽוֹ׃ biḏ·ḇar Yah·weh wə·’îš ’e·ḥāḏ mib·bə·nê han·nə·ḇî·’îm ’ā·mar ’el- rê·‘ê·hū hak·kê·nî nā way·mā·’ên hā·’îš lə·hak·kō·ṯōwWLC · 35

Then [the prophet] said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, as soon as you depart from me a lion will kill you.” And when he left…, a lion found him and killed him.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ יַ֚עַן אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ שָׁמַ֙עְתָּ֙ בְּק֣וֹל יְהוָ֔ה הִנְּךָ֤ הוֹלֵךְ֙ מֵֽאִתִּ֔י הָאַרְיֵ֑ה וְהִכְּךָ֖ וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ מֵֽאֶצְל֔וֹ הָאַרְיֵ֖ה וַיִּמְצָאֵ֥הוּ וַיַּכֵּֽהוּ׃ way·yō·mer lōw ya·‘an ’ă·šer lō- šā·ma‘·tā bə·qō·wl Yah·weh hin·nə·ḵā hō·w·lêḵ mê·’it·tî hā·’ar·yêh wə·hik·kə·ḵā way·yê·leḵ mê·’eṣ·lōw hā·’ar·yêh way·yim·ṣā·’ê·hū way·yak·kê·hūWLC · 36

Then the prophet found another man and said, “Strike me, please!” So the man struck him and wounded him…,

וַיִּמְצָא֙ אַחֵ֔ר אִ֣ישׁ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הַכֵּ֣ינִי נָ֑א הָאִ֖ישׁ וַיַּכֵּ֥הוּ הַכֵּ֥ה וּפָצֹֽעַ׃ way·yim·ṣā ’a·ḥêr ’îš way·yō·mer hak·kê·nî nā hā·’îš way·yak·kê·hū hak·kêh ū·p̄ā·ṣō·a‘WLC · 37

and the prophet went and waited on the road for the king, disguising himself with a bandage over his eyes.

הַנָּבִ֔יא וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד עַל־ הַדָּ֑רֶךְ לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ וַיִּתְחַפֵּ֥שׂ בָּאֲפֵ֖ר עַל־ עֵינָֽיו׃ han·nā·ḇî way·yê·leḵ way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ ‘al- had·dā·reḵ lam·me·leḵ way·yiṯ·ḥap·pêś bā·’ă·p̄êr ‘al- ‘ê·nāwWLC · 38

  • As the king passed by, he cried out to the king -: “Your servant had marched out into the middle of the battle, when suddenly a man came over with a captive and told me, ‘Guard this man! If he goes missing for any reason, your life will be exchanged for his life, or you will weigh out a talent of silver.

וַיְהִ֤י הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ עֹבֵ֔ר וְה֖וּא צָעַ֣ק אֶל־ הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּ֜אמֶר עַבְדְּךָ֣׀ יָצָ֣א בְקֶֽרֶב־ הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה וְהִנֵּֽה־ אִ֨ישׁ סָ֜ר וַיָּבֵ֧א אִ֗ישׁ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֵלַ֣י שְׁמֹר֙ אֶת־ הַזֶּ֔ה הָאִ֣ישׁ אִם־ יִפָּקֵ֔ד הִפָּקֵד֙ נַפְשְׁךָ֙ וְהָיְתָ֤ה תַּ֣חַת נַפְשׁ֔וֹ א֥וֹ תִּשְׁקֽוֹל׃ כִכַּר־ כֶּ֖סֶף way·hî ham·me·leḵ ‘ō·ḇêr wə·hū ṣā·‘aq ’el- ham·me·leḵ way·yō·mer ‘aḇ·də·ḵā yā·ṣā ḇə·qe·reḇ- ham·mil·ḥā·māh wə·hin·nêh- ’îš sār way·yā·ḇê ’îš way·yō·mer ’ê·lay šə·mōr ’eṯ- haz·zeh hā·’îš ’im- yip·pā·qêḏ hip·pā·qêḏ nap̄·šə·ḵā wə·hā·yə·ṯāh ta·ḥaṯ nap̄·šōw ’ōw tiš·qō·wl ḵik·kar- ke·sep̄WLC · 39

But while your servant was busy here and there, [the man] disappeared.” And the king of Israel said to him, “So [shall] your judgment [be]; you have pronounced it on yourself.”

עַבְדְּךָ֗ וַיְהִ֣י עֹשֵׂ֥ה הֵ֛נָּה וָהֵ֖נָּה וְה֣וּא אֵינֶ֑נּוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֧יו כֵּ֥ן מִשְׁפָּטֶ֖ךָ חָרָֽצְתָּ׃ אַתָּ֥ה ‘aḇ·də·ḵā way·hî ‘ō·śêh hên·nāh wā·hên·nāh wə·hū ’ê·nen·nū me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw kên miš·pā·ṭe·ḵā ḥā·rā·ṣə·tā ’at·tāhWLC · 40

Then [the prophet] quickly removed the bandage from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets.

וַיְמַהֵ֕ר וַיָּ֙סַר֙ אֶת־ הָ֣אֲפֵ֔ר מֵעַל עֵינָ֑יו מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיַּכֵּ֤ר אֹתוֹ֙ כִּ֥י הֽוּא׃ מֵֽהַנְּבִאִ֖ים way·ma·hêr way·yā·sar ’eṯ- hā·’ă·p̄êr mē·ʿal ‘ê·nāw me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êl way·yak·kêr ’ō·ṯōw kî hū mê·han·nə·ḇi·’îmWLC · 41

And [the prophet] said to [the king], “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you have let slip from your hand the man I had devoted to destruction, your life will be exchanged for his life, and your people for his people.’”

Sullen and angry, the king of Israel went home to Samaria.
