Chapter 13

Jehoahaz Reigns in Israel

1

In the twenty-third… year… of the reign of Joash son of Ahaziah over Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king of Israel, [and he reigned] in Samaria seventeen… years.

𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤔 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤆𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤄

עֶשְׂרִ֤ים וְשָׁלֹשׁ֙ בִּשְׁנַ֨ת שָׁנָ֔ה מֶ֣לֶךְ לְיוֹאָ֥שׁ בֶּן־ אֲחַזְיָ֖הוּ יְהוּדָ֑ה יְהוֹאָחָ֨ז בֶּן־ יֵה֤וּא מָ֠לַךְ עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן שְׁבַ֥ע עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה שָׁנָֽה׃ ‘eś·rîm wə·šā·lōš biš·naṯ šā·nāh me·leḵ lə·yō·w·’āš ben- ’ă·ḥaz·yā·hū yə·hū·ḏāh yə·hō·w·’ā·ḥāz ben- yê·hū mā·laḵ ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl bə·šō·mə·rō·wn šə·ḇa‘ ‘eś·rêh šā·nāhWLC · 1

And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and followed… the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤁𐤍 𐤍𐤁𐤈 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤈𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤎𐤓 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤄

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַ֠יֵּלֶךְ אַחַ֨ר חַטֹּ֜את אֲשֶׁר־ יָרָבְעָ֧ם בֶּן־ נְבָ֛ט יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הֶחֱטִ֥יא אֶת־ לֹא־ סָ֥ר מִמֶּֽנָּה׃ way·ya·‘aś hā·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh way·yê·leḵ ’a·ḥar ḥaṭ·ṭōṯ ’ă·šer- yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām ben- nə·ḇāṭ yiś·rā·’êl he·ḥĕ·ṭî ’eṯ- lō- sār mim·men·nāhWLC · 2

So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He delivered them continually… into the hands of Hazael king of Aram… and his son Ben-hadad.

𐤀𐤐 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤇𐤆𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤁𐤍 𐤇𐤆𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍 𐤄𐤃𐤃

אַ֥ף יְהוָ֖ה וַיִּֽחַר־ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֞ם כָּל־ הַיָּמִֽים׃ בְּיַ֣ד׀ חֲזָאֵ֣ל מֶֽלֶךְ־ אֲרָ֗ם וּבְיַ֛ד בֶּן־ חֲזָאֵ֖ל בֶּן־ הֲדַ֥ד ’ap̄ Yah·weh way·yi·ḥar- bə·yiś·rā·’êl way·yit·tə·nêm kāl- hay·yā·mîm bə·yaḏ ḥă·zā·’êl me·leḵ- ’ă·rām ū·ḇə·yaḏ ben- ḥă·zā·’êl ben- hă·ḏaḏWLC · 3

Then Jehoahaz sought the favor of the LORD, and the LORD listened to him because He saw the oppression that the king of Aram had inflicted on Israel…

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤇𐤑 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤑 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤉

יְהוֹאָחָ֖ז אֶת־ וַיְחַ֥ל פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע אֵלָיו֙ כִּ֤י רָאָה֙ אֶת־ לַ֣חַץ מֶ֥לֶךְ אֲרָֽם׃ לָחַ֥ץ אֹתָ֖ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּֽי־ yə·hō·w·’ā·ḥāz ’eṯ- way·ḥal pə·nê Yah·weh Yah·weh way·yiš·ma‘ ’ê·lāw kî rā·’āh ’eṯ- la·ḥaṣ me·leḵ ’ă·rām lā·ḥaṣ ’ō·ṯām yiś·rā·’êl kî-WLC · 4

So the LORD gave Israel a deliverer, and they escaped… the power of the Arameans. Then the people of Israel lived in their own homes as they had before…

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤋 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤌

יְהוָ֤ה וַיִּתֵּ֨ן לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מוֹשִׁ֔יעַ וַיֵּ֣צְא֔וּ מִתַּ֖חַת יַד־ אֲרָ֑ם בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וַיֵּשְׁב֧וּ בְּאָהֳלֵיהֶ֖ם כִּתְמ֥וֹל שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃ Yah·weh way·yit·tên lə·yiś·rā·’êl mō·wō·šî·a‘ way·yê·ṣə·’ū mit·ta·ḥaṯ yaḏ- ’ă·rām ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·yê·šə·ḇū bə·’ā·ho·lê·hem kiṯ·mō·wl šil·šō·wmWLC · 5

Nevertheless, they did not turn away from the sins that the house of Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit, [but] they continued to walk in them. The Asherah [pole] even remained standing in Samaria.

𐤀𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤎𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤄 𐤄𐤇𐤈𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍

אַ֠ךְ לֹֽא־ סָ֜רוּ מֵחַטֹּ֧אות אֲשֶׁר־ בֵּית־ יָרָבְעָ֛ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בָּ֣הּ הֶחֱטִי אֶת־ הָלָ֑ךְ הָאֲשֵׁרָ֔ה וְגַם֙ עָמְדָ֖ה בְּשֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃ ’aḵ lō- sā·rū mê·ḥaṭ·ṭō·wṯ ’ă·šer- bêṯ- yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām yiś·rā·’êl bāh hɛ·ḥɛ̆·ṭī ’eṯ- hā·lāḵ hā·’ă·šê·rāh wə·ḡam ‘ā·mə·ḏāh bə·šō·mə·rō·wnWLC · 6

Jehoahaz had no army left, except… fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand foot soldiers, because the king of Aram had destroyed them and made them like the dust at threshing.

𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤀𐤉𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤌 𐤊𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤋𐤃𐤔

לִיהוֹאָחָ֜ז לֹא֩ עָ֗ם הִשְׁאִ֨יר כִּ֣י כִּ֣י אִם־ חֲמִשִּׁ֤ים פָּֽרָשִׁים֙ וַעֲשָׂ֣רָה רֶ֔כֶב וַעֲשֶׂ֥רֶת אֲלָפִ֖ים רַגְלִ֑י כִּ֤י מֶ֣לֶךְ אֲרָ֔ם אִבְּדָם֙ וַיְשִׂמֵ֥ם כֶּֽעָפָ֖ר לָדֻֽשׁ׃ lî·hō·w·’ā·ḥāz lō ‘ām hiš·’îr kî kî ’im- ḥă·miš·šîm pā·rā·šîm wa·‘ă·śā·rāh re·ḵeḇ wa·‘ă·śe·reṯ ’ă·lā·p̄îm raḡ·lî kî me·leḵ ’ă·rām ’ib·bə·ḏām way·śi·mêm ke·‘ā·p̄ār lā·ḏušWLC · 7

As for the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, along with all his accomplishments… and his might,… are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles… of the Kings of Israel?

𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤅 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤕𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

וְיֶ֨תֶר דִּבְרֵ֧י יְהוֹאָחָ֛ז וְכָל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֖ה וּגְבוּרָת֑וֹ הֲלוֹא־ הֵ֣ם כְּתוּבִ֗ים עַל־ סֵ֛פֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י הַיָּמִ֖ים לְמַלְכֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ wə·ye·ṯer diḇ·rê yə·hō·w·’ā·ḥāz wə·ḵāl ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh ū·ḡə·ḇū·rā·ṯōw hă·lō·w- hêm kə·ṯū·ḇîm ‘al- sê·p̄er diḇ·rê hay·yā·mîm lə·mal·ḵê yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 8

And Jehoahaz rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria. And his son Jehoash reigned in his place.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤁 𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤅𐤐

יְהֽוֹאָחָז֙ וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב עִם־ אֲבֹתָ֔יו וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֖הוּ בְּשֹׁמְר֑וֹן בְּנ֖וֹ יוֹאָ֥שׁ וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ yə·hō·w·’ā·ḥāz way·yiš·kaḇ ‘im- ’ă·ḇō·ṯāw way·yiq·bə·ru·hū bə·šō·mə·rō·wn bə·nōw yō·w·’āš way·yim·lōḵ taḥ·tāwWLC · 9

Jehoash Reigns in Israel

In the thirty-seventh… year of the reign of Joash over Judah, Jehoash son of Jehoahaz became king of Israel in Samaria, [and he reigned] sixteen… years.

𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤔𐤔 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤄

שְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים וָשֶׁ֙בַע֙ בִּשְׁנַ֨ת שָׁנָ֔ה מֶ֣לֶךְ לְיוֹאָ֖שׁ יְהוּדָ֑ה יְהוֹאָ֨שׁ בֶּן־ יְהוֹאָחָ֤ז מָ֠לַךְ עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן שֵׁ֥שׁ עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה שָׁנָֽה׃ šə·lō·šîm wā·še·ḇa‘ biš·naṯ šā·nāh me·leḵ lə·yō·w·’āš yə·hū·ḏāh yə·hō·w·’āš ben- yə·hō·w·’ā·ḥāz mā·laḵ ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl bə·šō·mə·rō·wn šêš ‘eś·rêh šā·nāhWLC · 10

וַיַּֽעֲשֶׂ֥ה הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה לֹ֣א סָ֗ר מִכָּל־ חַטֹּ֞אות אֲשֶׁר־ יָרָבְעָ֧ם בֶּן־ נְבָ֛ט יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בָּ֥הּ הֶחֱטִ֥יא אֶת־ הָלָֽךְ׃ way·ya·‘ă·śeh hā·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh lō sār mik·kāl ḥaṭ·ṭō·wṯ ’ă·šer- yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām ben- nə·ḇāṭ yiś·rā·’êl bāh he·ḥĕ·ṭî ’eṯ- hā·lāḵWLC · 11

As for the rest of the acts of Jehoash, along with all his accomplishments… and his might, including his war against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles… of the Kings of Israel?

𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤑𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤊𐤕𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

וְיֶ֨תֶר דִּבְרֵ֤י יוֹאָשׁ֙ וְכָל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֔ה וּגְב֣וּרָת֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִלְחַ֔ם עִ֖ם אֲמַצְיָ֣ה מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְהוּדָ֑ה הֵ֣ם הֲלֽוֹא־ כְּתוּבִ֗ים עַל־ סֵ֛פֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י הַיָּמִ֖ים לְמַלְכֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ wə·ye·ṯer diḇ·rê yō·w·’āš wə·ḵāl ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh ū·ḡə·ḇū·rā·ṯōw ’ă·šer nil·ḥam ‘im ’ă·maṣ·yāh me·leḵ- yə·hū·ḏāh hêm hă·lō·w- kə·ṯū·ḇîm ‘al- sê·p̄er diḇ·rê hay·yā·mîm lə·mal·ḵê yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 12

And Jehoash rested with his fathers, and Jeroboam succeeded him on the throne. Jehoash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.

יוֹאָשׁ֙ וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב עִם־ אֲבֹתָ֔יו וְיָרָבְעָ֖ם יָשַׁ֣ב עַל־ כִּסְא֑וֹ יוֹאָשׁ֙ וַיִּקָּבֵ֤ר בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן עִ֖ם מַלְכֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ yō·w·’āš way·yiš·kaḇ ‘im- ’ă·ḇō·ṯāw wə·yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām yā·šaḇ ‘al- kis·’ōw yō·w·’āš way·yiq·qā·ḇêr bə·šō·mə·rō·wn ‘im mal·ḵê yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 13

Elisha’s Final Prophecy

When Elisha had fallen sick with the illness from which he would die Jehoash king of Israel came down to him and wept over him, saying, “My father, my father, the chariots and horsemen of Israel!”

𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤇𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤅 𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤉 𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

וֶֽאֱלִישָׁע֙ חָלָ֣ה אֶת־ חָלְי֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָמ֖וּת בּ֑וֹ יוֹאָ֣שׁ מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַיֵּ֨רֶד אֵלָ֜יו וַיֵּ֤בְךְּ עַל־ פָּנָיו֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר אָבִ֣י׀ אָבִ֔י רֶ֥כֶב וּפָרָשָֽׁיו׃ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל we·’ĕ·lî·šā‘ ḥā·lāh ’eṯ- ḥā·lə·yōw ’ă·šer yā·mūṯ bōw yō·w·’āš me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl way·yê·reḏ ’ê·lāw way·yê·ḇək ‘al- pā·nāw way·yō·mar ’ā·ḇî ’ā·ḇî re·ḵeḇ ū·p̄ā·rā·šāw yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 14

Elisha told him, “Take a bow and some arrows.” So [Jehoash] took… a bow and some arrows.

Then Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” So the king put his hand on [the bow], and Elisha put his hands on the king’s hands.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ לְמֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הַרְכֵּ֤ב יָֽדְךָ֙ עַל־ הַקֶּ֔שֶׁת וַיַּרְכֵּ֖ב יָד֑וֹ אֱלִישָׁ֛ע וַיָּ֧שֶׂם יָדָ֖יו עַל־ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ יְדֵ֥י way·yō·mer lə·me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êl har·kêḇ yā·ḏə·ḵā ‘al- haq·qe·šeṯ way·yar·kêḇ yā·ḏōw ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ way·yā·śem yā·ḏāw ‘al- ham·me·leḵ yə·ḏêWLC · 16

“Open the east window,” said Elisha. So he opened [it] and Elisha said, “Shoot!” So he shot. And Elisha declared: “This is the LORD’s arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Aram, for you shall strike the Arameans in Aphek until you have put an end to them.”

פְּתַ֧ח קֵ֖דְמָה הַחַלּ֛וֹן וַיֹּ֗אמֶר וַיִּפְתָּ֑ח אֱלִישָׁ֤ע וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְרֵה֙ וַיּ֔וֹר וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לַֽיהוָה֙ חֵץ־ תְּשׁוּעָ֤ה וְחֵ֣ץ תְּשׁוּעָ֣ה בַֽאֲרָ֔ם וְהִכִּיתָ֧ אֶת־ אֲרָ֛ם בַּאֲפֵ֖ק עַד־ כַּלֵּֽה׃ pə·ṯaḥ qê·ḏə·māh ha·ḥal·lō·wn way·yō·mer way·yip̄·tāḥ ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ way·yō·mer yə·rêh way·yō·wr way·yō·mer Yah·weh ḥêṣ- tə·šū·‘āh wə·ḥêṣ tə·šū·‘āh ḇa·’ă·rām wə·hik·kî·ṯā ’eṯ- ’ă·rām ba·’ă·p̄êq ‘aḏ- kal·lêhWLC · 17

Then Elisha said, “Take the arrows!” So he took [them], and Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground!” So he struck the ground three times and stopped.

וַיֹּ֛אמֶר קַ֥ח הַחִצִּ֖ים וַיִּקָּ֑ח וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לְמֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ הַךְ־ אַ֔רְצָה וַיַּ֥ךְ שָֽׁלֹשׁ־ פְּעָמִ֖ים וַֽיַּעֲמֹֽד׃ way·yō·mer qaḥ ha·ḥiṣ·ṣîm way·yiq·qāḥ way·yō·mer lə·me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl haḵ- ’ar·ṣāh way·yaḵ šā·lōš- pə·‘ā·mîm way·ya·‘ă·mōḏWLC · 18

But the man of God was angry with him and said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times. Then you would have struck down Aram until you had put an end to it. But now you will strike down Aram [only] three times.”

אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים וַיִּקְצֹ֨ף עָלָ֜יו וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לְהַכּ֨וֹת חָמֵ֤שׁ אוֹ־ שֵׁשׁ֙ פְּעָמִ֔ים אָ֛ז הִכִּ֥יתָ אֶת־ אֲרָ֖ם עַד־ כַּלֵּ֑ה וְעַתָּ֕ה תַּכֶּ֥ה אֶת־ אֲרָֽם׃ס שָׁלֹ֥שׁ פְּעָמִ֖ים ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yiq·ṣōp̄ ‘ā·lāw way·yō·mer lə·hak·kō·wṯ ḥā·mêš ’ōw- šêš pə·‘ā·mîm ’āz hik·kî·ṯā ’eṯ- ’ă·rām ‘aḏ- kal·lêh wə·‘at·tāh tak·keh ’eṯ- ’ă·rām šā·lōš pə·‘ā·mîmWLC · 19

And Elisha died and was buried. Now the Moabite raiders used to come into the land every spring…

אֱלִישָׁ֖ע וַיָּ֥מָת וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֑הוּ מוֹאָ֛ב וּגְדוּדֵ֥י יָבֹ֥אוּ בָאָ֖רֶץ בָּ֥א שָׁנָֽה׃ ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ way·yā·māṯ way·yiq·bə·ru·hū mō·w·’āḇ ū·ḡə·ḏū·ḏê yā·ḇō·’ū ḇā·’ā·reṣ bā šā·nāhWLC · 20

Once, as the Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band [of raiders], so they threw the man’s body into Elisha’s… tomb. And as soon as [his body] touched the bones of Elisha, the man was revived and stood up on his feet.

And Hazael king of Aram oppressed Israel throughout the reign of Jehoahaz.

𐤅𐤇𐤆𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤑 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤆

וַֽחֲזָאֵל֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ אֲרָ֔ם לָחַ֖ץ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כֹּ֖ל יְמֵ֥י יְהוֹאָחָֽז׃ wa·ḥă·zā·’êl me·leḵ ’ă·rām lā·ḥaṣ ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl kōl yə·mê yə·hō·w·’ā·ḥāzWLC · 22

But the LORD was gracious to [Israel] and had compassion on them, and He turned toward them because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And to this day, vvv [the LORD] has been unwilling to destroy them or cast them from His presence.

יְהוָ֨ה וַיָּחָן֩ אֹתָ֤ם וַֽיְרַחֲמֵם֙ וַיִּ֣פֶן אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם לְמַ֣עַן בְּרִית֔וֹ אֶת־ אַבְרָהָ֖ם יִצְחָ֣ק וְיַֽעֲקֹ֑ב עַד־ עָֽתָּה׃ וְלֹ֤א אָבָה֙ הַשְׁחִיתָ֔ם וְלֹֽא־ הִשְׁלִיכָ֥ם מֵֽעַל־ פָּנָ֖יו Yah·weh way·yā·ḥān ’ō·ṯām way·ra·ḥă·mêm way·yi·p̄en ’ă·lê·hem lə·ma·‘an bə·rî·ṯōw ’eṯ- ’aḇ·rā·hām yiṣ·ḥāq wə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ ‘aḏ- ‘āt·tāh wə·lō ’ā·ḇāh haš·ḥî·ṯām wə·lō- hiš·lî·ḵām mê·‘al- pā·nāwWLC · 23

When Hazael king of Aram died, his son vvv Ben-hadad reigned in his place.

𐤇𐤆𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤄𐤃𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤅

חֲזָאֵ֣ל מֶֽלֶךְ־ אֲרָ֑ם וַיָּ֖מָת בְּנ֖וֹ בֶּן־ הֲדַ֥ד וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ ḥă·zā·’êl me·leḵ- ’ă·rām way·yā·māṯ bə·nōw ben- hă·ḏaḏ way·yim·lōḵ taḥ·tāwWLC · 24

Then Jehoash son of Jehoahaz took back from vvv Ben-hadad son of Hazael the cities that Hazael had taken in battle from his father Jehoahaz. Jehoash defeated Ben-hadad three times, and so recovered the cities of Israel.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤁𐤍 𐤄𐤃𐤃 𐤁𐤍 𐤇𐤆𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤅 𐤔𐤋𐤔 𐤐𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋𐤐

יְהוֹאָ֣שׁ בֶּן־ יְהוֹאָחָ֗ז וַיִּקַּ֤ח אֶת־ וַיָּ֜שָׁב מִיַּד֙ בֶּן־ הֲדַ֣ד בֶּן־ חֲזָאֵ֔ל הֶֽעָרִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָקַ֗ח בַּמִּלְחָמָ֑ה מִיַּ֛ד אָבִ֖יו יְהוֹאָחָ֥ז יוֹאָ֔שׁ הִכָּ֣הוּ שָׁלֹ֤שׁ פְּעָמִים֙ וַיָּ֖שֶׁב אֶת־ עָרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ yə·hō·w·’āš ben- yə·hō·w·’ā·ḥāz way·yiq·qaḥ ’eṯ- way·yā·šāḇ mî·yaḏ ben- hă·ḏaḏ ben- ḥă·zā·’êl he·‘ā·rîm ’ă·šer lā·qaḥ bam·mil·ḥā·māh mî·yaḏ ’ā·ḇîw yə·hō·w·’ā·ḥāz yō·w·’āš hik·kā·hū šā·lōš pə·‘ā·mîm way·yā·šeḇ ’eṯ- ‘ā·rê yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 25
