Amaziah Reigns in Judah
1
In the second year of the reign of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz over Israel, Amaziah son of Joash became king… of Judah.
𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤌𐤑𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄
שְׁתַּ֔יִם בִּשְׁנַ֣ת מֶ֣לֶךְ לְיוֹאָ֥שׁ בֶּן־ יוֹאָחָ֖ז יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲמַצְיָ֥הוּ בֶן־ יוֹאָ֖שׁ מָלַ֛ךְ מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה׃ šə·ta·yim biš·naṯ me·leḵ lə·yō·w·’āš ben- yō·w·’ā·ḥāz yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·maṣ·yā·hū ḇen- yō·w·’āš mā·laḵ me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 1

He was twenty-five… years old… when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine… years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem.

And he did [what was] right in the eyes of the LORD, but not as his father David {had done}. He did everything as his father Joash had done.

Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away, and the people continued sacrificing and burning incense on the high places.

רַ֥ק הַבָּמ֖וֹת לֹא־ סָ֑רוּ הָעָ֛ם ע֥וֹד מְזַבְּחִ֥ים וּֽמְקַטְּרִ֖ים בַּבָּמֽוֹת׃ raq hab·bā·mō·wṯ lō- sā·rū hā·‘ām ‘ō·wḏ mə·zab·bə·ḥîm ū·mə·qaṭ·ṭə·rîm bab·bā·mō·wṯ — WLC · 4

- As soon as the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, Amaziah executed the servants who had murdered his father the king.

וַיְהִ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה חָזְקָ֥ה בְּיָד֑וֹ וַיַּךְ֙ אֶת־ עֲבָדָ֔יו הַמַּכִּ֖ים אֶת־ אָבִֽיו׃ הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ way·hî ka·’ă·šer ham·mam·lā·ḵāh ḥā·zə·qāh bə·yā·ḏōw way·yaḵ ’eṯ- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw ham·mak·kîm ’eṯ- ’ā·ḇîw ham·me·leḵ — WLC · 5

Yet he did not put the sons of the murderers to death, [but acted] according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, where the LORD… commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”

וְאֶת־ לֹ֣א בְּנֵ֥י הַמַּכִּ֖ים הֵמִ֑ית כַּכָּת֣וּב בְּסֵ֣פֶר תּֽוֹרַת־ מֹ֠שֶׁה אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֜ה לֵאמֹ֗ר צִוָּ֨ה אָב֤וֹת לֹא־ יוּמְת֨וּ עַל־ בָּנִים֙ וּבָנִים֙ לֹא־ יוּמְת֣וּ עַל־ אָב֔וֹת כִּ֛י אִם־ אִ֥ישׁ יָמוּת׃ בְּחֶטְא֖וֹ wə·’eṯ- lō bə·nê ham·mak·kîm hê·mîṯ kak·kā·ṯūḇ bə·sê·p̄er tō·w·raṯ- mō·šeh ’ă·šer- Yah·weh lê·mōr ṣiw·wāh ’ā·ḇō·wṯ lō- yū·mə·ṯū ‘al- bā·nîm ū·ḇā·nîm lō- yū·mə·ṯū ‘al- ’ā·ḇō·wṯ kî ’im- ’îš yå̄·mūṯ bə·ḥeṭ·’ōw — WLC · 6

Amaziah struck down 10,000 {}… Edomites in the Valley of Salt. He took Sela in battle and called it Joktheel, [which is] its name to this very day.

הוּא־ הִכָּ֨ה אֶת־ עֲשֶׂ֣רֶת אֲלָפִ֔ים אֱד֤וֹם בְּגֵיא־ הַמֶּלַח וְתָפַ֥שׂ אֶת־ הַסֶּ֖לַע בַּמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וַיִּקְרָ֤א אֶת־ יָקְתְאֵ֔ל שְׁמָהּ֙ עַ֖ד הַזֶּֽה׃פ הַיּ֥וֹם hū- hik·kāh ’eṯ- ‘ă·śe·reṯ ’ă·lā·p̄îm ’ĕ·ḏō·wm bə·ḡê- ham·mɛ·laḥ wə·ṯā·p̄aś ’eṯ- has·se·la‘ bam·mil·ḥā·māh way·yiq·rā ’eṯ- yā·qə·ṯə·’êl šə·māh ‘aḏ haz·zeh hay·yō·wm — WLC · 7
Jehoash Defeats Amaziah

Then Amaziah sent messengers to the king of Israel Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu. “Come, let us meet face to face,” he said.

אָ֣ז אֲמַצְיָה֙ שָׁלַ֤ח מַלְאָכִ֔ים אֶל־ מֶ֥לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יְהוֹאָ֨שׁ בֶּן־ יְהוֹאָחָ֧ז בֶּן־ יֵה֛וּא לְכָ֖ה נִתְרָאֶ֥ה פָנִֽים׃ לֵאמֹ֑ר ’āz ’ă·maṣ·yāh šā·laḥ mal·’ā·ḵîm ’el- me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êl yə·hō·w·’āš ben- yə·hō·w·’ā·ḥāz ben- yê·hū lə·ḵāh niṯ·rā·’eh p̄ā·nîm lê·mōr — WLC · 8

But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah -: “A thistle in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle.

יְהוֹאָ֣שׁ מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח אֶל־ אֲמַצְיָ֣הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְהוּדָה֮ לֵאמֹר֒ הַח֜וֹחַ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּלְּבָנ֗וֹן שָׁ֠לַח אֶל־ הָאֶ֜רֶז אֲשֶׁ֤ר בַּלְּבָנוֹן֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר תְּנָֽה־ אֶת־ בִּתְּךָ֥ לִבְנִ֖י לְאִשָּׁ֑ה הַשָּׂדֶה֙ חַיַּ֤ת אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּלְּבָנ֔וֹן וַֽתַּעֲבֹ֞ר וַתִּרְמֹ֖ס אֶת־ הַחֽוֹחַ׃ yə·hō·w·’āš me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl way·yiš·laḥ ’el- ’ă·maṣ·yā·hū me·leḵ- yə·hū·ḏāh lê·mōr ha·ḥō·w·aḥ ’ă·šer bal·lə·ḇā·nō·wn šā·laḥ ’el- hā·’e·rez ’ă·šer bal·lə·ḇā·nō·wn lê·mōr tə·nāh- ’eṯ- bit·tə·ḵā liḇ·nî lə·’iš·šāh haś·śā·ḏeh ḥay·yaṯ ’ă·šer bal·lə·ḇā·nō·wn wat·ta·‘ă·ḇōr wat·tir·mōs ’eṯ- ha·ḥō·w·aḥ — WLC · 9

You have indeed defeated… Edom, and your heart has become proud. Glory [in that] and stay at home. Why should you stir up trouble so that you fall— you and Judah with you?”

But Amaziah would not listen, so Jehoash king of Israel advanced. He and King Amaziah of Judah faced each other… vvv at Beth-shemesh in Judah.

אֲמַצְיָ֔הוּ וְלֹא־ שָׁמַ֣ע יְהוֹאָ֤שׁ מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיַּ֨עַל ה֖וּא מֶֽלֶךְ־ וַאֲמַצְיָ֣הוּ יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיִּתְרָא֣וּ פָנִ֔ים בְּבֵ֥ית שֶׁ֖מֶשׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לִיהוּדָֽה׃ ’ă·maṣ·yā·hū wə·lō- šā·ma‘ yə·hō·w·’āš me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl way·ya·‘al hū me·leḵ- wa·’ă·maṣ·yā·hū yə·hū·ḏāh way·yiṯ·rā·’ū p̄ā·nîm bə·ḇêṯ še·meš ’ă·šer lî·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 11

And Judah was routed before Israel, and every man fled to his home.

- vvv There at Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate— [a section of] four hundred cubits.

He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the house of the LORD and in the treasuries of the royal palace, as well as some hostages… Then he returned to Samaria.

And Jehoash rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. And his son Jeroboam reigned in his place.

Then all the people of Judah took Azariah, who [was] sixteen… years old…, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah.

[Azariah was the one] who rebuilt Elath and restored it to Judah after King [Amaziah] rested with his fathers.

[This Jeroboam] restored the boundary of Israel vvv from Lebo-hamath to the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word that the LORD, the God of Israel, had spoken through His servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet vvv from Gath-hepher.
