Ahaz Reigns in Judah
1
In the seventeenth… year of Pekah son of Remaliah, Ahaz son of Jotham became king… of Judah.
𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤋𐤐𐤒𐤇 𐤁𐤍 𐤓𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄
שְׁבַֽע־ עֶשְׂרֵ֣ה שָׁנָ֔ה בִּשְׁנַת֙ לְפֶ֖קַח בֶּן־ רְמַלְיָ֑הוּ אָחָ֥ז בֶּן־ יוֹתָ֖ם מָלַ֛ךְ מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה׃ šə·ḇa‘- ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh biš·naṯ lə·p̄e·qaḥ ben- rə·mal·yā·hū ’ā·ḥāz ben- yō·w·ṯām mā·laḵ me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 1

Ahaz was twenty years old… when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen… years. And unlike David his father, he did not do [what was] right in the eyes of the LORD his God.

אָחָ֣ז עֶשְׂרִ֤ים בֶּן־ שָׁנָה֙ בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְשֵׁשׁ־ עֶשְׂרֵ֣ה שָׁנָ֔ה כְּדָוִ֥ד אָבִֽיו׃ וְלֹא־ עָשָׂ֣ה הַיָּשָׁ֗ר בְּעֵינֵ֛י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָ֖יו ’ā·ḥāz ‘eś·rîm ben- šā·nāh bə·mā·lə·ḵōw mā·laḵ bî·rū·šā·lim wə·šêš- ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh kə·ḏā·wiḏ ’ā·ḇîw wə·lō- ‘ā·śāh hay·yā·šār bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāw — WLC · 2

Instead, he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and even sacrificed his son in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites…

וַיֵּ֕לֶךְ בְּדֶ֖רֶךְ מַלְכֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְגַ֤ם אֶת־ הֶעֱבִ֣יר בְּנוֹ֙ בָּאֵ֔שׁ כְּתֹֽעֲבוֹת֙ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָה֙ אֹתָ֔ם הוֹרִ֤ישׁ מִפְּנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ way·yê·leḵ bə·ḏe·reḵ mal·ḵê yiś·rā·’êl wə·ḡam ’eṯ- he·‘ĕ·ḇîr bə·nōw bā·’êš kə·ṯō·‘ă·ḇō·wṯ hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ō·ṯām hō·w·rîš mip·pə·nê bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 3

And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.

וַיְזַבֵּ֧חַ וַיְקַטֵּ֛ר בַּבָּמ֖וֹת וְעַל־ הַגְּבָע֑וֹת וְתַ֖חַת כָּל־ רַעֲנָֽן׃ עֵ֥ץ way·zab·bê·aḥ way·qaṭ·ṭêr bab·bā·mō·wṯ wə·‘al- hag·gə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ kāl- ra·‘ă·nān ‘êṣ — WLC · 4

Then Rezin king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to wage war against Jerusalem. They besieged… Ahaz but could not overcome [him].

אָ֣ז רְצִ֣ין מֶֽלֶךְ־ אֲ֠רָם וּפֶ֨קַח בֶּן־ רְמַלְיָ֧הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל יַעֲלֶ֣ה לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וַיָּצֻ֙רוּ֙ עַל־ אָחָ֔ז יָכְל֖וּ וְלֹ֥א לְהִלָּחֵֽם׃ ’āz rə·ṣîn me·leḵ- ’ă·rām ū·p̄e·qaḥ ben- rə·mal·yā·hū me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl ya·‘ă·leh lam·mil·ḥā·māh yə·rū·šā·lim way·yā·ṣu·rū ‘al- ’ā·ḥāz yā·ḵə·lū wə·lō lə·hil·lā·ḥêm — WLC · 5

At that time Rezin king of Aram recovered Elath for Aram, drove out the men of Judah -, and sent the Edomites into Elath, where they live to this day.

הַהִ֗יא בָּעֵ֣ת רְצִ֨ין מֶֽלֶךְ־ אֲרָ֤ם אֶת־ הֵ֠שִׁיב אֵילַת֙ לַֽאֲרָ֔ם וַיְנַשֵּׁ֥ל אֶת־ הַיְהוּדִ֖ים מֵֽאֵיל֑וֹת בָּ֣אוּ וַאֲרַמִּים אֵילַ֔ת שָׁ֔ם וַיֵּ֣שְׁבוּ עַ֖ד הַזֶּֽה׃פ הַיּ֥וֹם ha·hî bā·‘êṯ rə·ṣîn me·leḵ- ’ă·rām ’eṯ- hê·šîḇ ’ê·laṯ la·’ă·rām way·naš·šêl ’eṯ- hay·hū·ḏîm mê·’ê·lō·wṯ bā·’ū wa·ʾă·ram·mīm ’ê·laṯ šām way·yê·šə·ḇū ‘aḏ haz·zeh hay·yō·wm — WLC · 6

So Ahaz sent messengers to vvv Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, saying, “I am your servant and your son. Come up and save me from the hands of the kings of Aram… [and] Israel, who are rising up against me.”

אָחָ֜ז וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח מַלְאָכִ֗ים אֶל־ תִּ֠גְלַת פְּלֶ֤סֶר מֶֽלֶךְ־ אַשּׁוּר֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אָ֑נִי עַבְדְּךָ֥ וּבִנְךָ֖ עֲלֵ֨ה וְהוֹשִׁעֵ֜נִי מִכַּ֣ף מֶֽלֶךְ־ אֲרָ֗ם וּמִכַּף֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַקּוֹמִ֖ים עָלָֽי׃ ’ā·ḥāz way·yiš·laḥ mal·’ā·ḵîm ’el- tiḡ·laṯ pə·le·ser me·leḵ- ’aš·šūr lê·mōr ’ā·nî ‘aḇ·də·ḵā ū·ḇin·ḵā ‘ă·lêh wə·hō·wō·ši·‘ê·nî mik·kap̄ me·leḵ- ’ă·rām ū·mik·kap̄ me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êl haq·qō·w·mîm ‘ā·lāy — WLC · 7

Ahaz also took the silver and gold found in the house of the LORD and in the treasuries of the king’s palace, and he sent it as a gift to the king of Assyria.

אָחָ֜ז אֶת־ וַיִּקַּ֨ח הַכֶּ֣סֶף וְאֶת־ הַזָּהָ֗ב הַנִּמְצָא֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה וּבְאֹֽצְר֖וֹת הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ בֵּ֣ית וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח שֹֽׁחַד׃ לְמֶֽלֶךְ־ אַשּׁ֖וּר ’ā·ḥāz ’eṯ- way·yiq·qaḥ hak·ke·sep̄ wə·’eṯ- haz·zā·hāḇ han·nim·ṣā bêṯ Yah·weh ū·ḇə·’ō·ṣə·rō·wṯ ham·me·leḵ bêṯ way·yiš·laḥ šō·ḥaḏ lə·me·leḵ- ’aš·šūr — WLC · 8

So the king of Assyria responded to him, marched up… to Damascus, and captured it. He took its people to Kir as captives and put Rezin to death.

The Idolatry of Ahaz

Then King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet vvv Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria. On seeing the altar in Damascus, King Ahaz sent… Uriah the priest a model of the altar and complete plans… for its construction.

And Uriah the priest built the altar according to all the instructions King Ahaz had sent from Damascus, [and] - he completed it before King Ahaz returned -.

אוּרִיָּ֥ה הַכֹּהֵ֖ן אֶת־ וַיִּ֛בֶן הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ כְּכֹ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ אָחָ֜ז שָׁלַח֩ מִדַּמֶּ֗שֶׂק כֵּ֤ן אוּרִיָּ֣ה הַכֹּהֵ֔ן עָשָׂה֙ עַד־ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ־ אָחָ֖ז בּ֥וֹא מִדַּמָּֽשֶׂק׃ ’ū·rî·yāh hak·kō·hên ’eṯ- way·yi·ḇen ham·miz·bê·aḥ kə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- ham·me·leḵ ’ā·ḥāz šā·laḥ mid·dam·me·śeq kên ’ū·rî·yāh hak·kō·hên ‘ā·śāh ‘aḏ- ham·me·leḵ- ’ā·ḥāz bō·w mid·dam·mā·śeq — WLC · 11

When the king came back from Damascus - and saw the altar, he… approached [it] and presented offerings on it.

הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ וַיָּבֹ֤א מִדַּמֶּ֔שֶׂק הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶת־ וַיַּ֥רְא הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ עַל־ וַיִּקְרַ֥ב הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ וַיַּ֥עַל עָלָֽיו׃ ham·me·leḵ way·yā·ḇō mid·dam·me·śeq ham·me·leḵ ’eṯ- way·yar ham·miz·bê·aḥ ham·me·leḵ ‘al- way·yiq·raḇ ham·miz·bê·aḥ way·ya·‘al ‘ā·lāw — WLC · 12

He offered his burnt offering and his grain offering, poured out his drink offering, and splattered the blood of his peace offerings on the altar.

וַיַּקְטֵ֤ר אֶת־ עֹֽלָתוֹ֙ וְאֶת־ מִנְחָת֔וֹ וַיַּסֵּ֖ךְ אֶת־ נִסְכּ֑וֹ וַיִּזְרֹ֛ק אֶת־ דַּֽם־ הַשְּׁלָמִ֥ים אֲשֶׁר־ ל֖וֹ עַל־ הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ way·yaq·ṭêr ’eṯ- ‘ō·lā·ṯōw wə·’eṯ- min·ḥā·ṯōw way·yas·sêḵ ’eṯ- nis·kōw way·yiz·rōq ’eṯ- dam- haš·šə·lā·mîm ’ă·šer- lōw ‘al- ham·miz·bê·aḥ — WLC · 13

- He also took… the bronze altar that stood before the LORD from the front of the temple (between the [new] altar and the house of the LORD) and he put it on the north side of the [new] altar.

Then King Ahaz commanded Uriah the priest,… “Offer on the great altar the morning burnt offering, the evening grain offering, and the king’s burnt offering and grain offering, as well as the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings of all the people of the land. Splatter on the altar all the blood of the burnt offerings [and]… sacrifices. But I will use… the bronze altar to seek guidance.”

King Ahaz also cut off the frames of the movable stands and removed the [bronze] basin from each of them. He took down the Sea from the bronze oxen that were under it and put it on a stone base.

And on account of the king of Assyria, he removed the Sabbath canopy they had built in the temple and closed the royal entryway outside the house of the LORD.
