Chapter 20
Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery
1
In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said -, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”

Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD, saying,
𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
וַיַּסֵּ֥ב אֶת־ פָּנָ֖יו אֶל־ הַקִּ֑יר וַיִּ֨תְפַּלֵּ֔ל אֶל־ יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃ way·yas·sêḇ ’eṯ- pā·nāw ’el- haq·qîr way·yiṯ·pal·lêl ’el- Yah·weh lê·mōr — WLC · 2

“Please, O LORD, remember… how I have walked before You faithfully and with wholehearted devotion; I have done [what is] good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah… wept bitterly.

Before Isaiah had left the middle courtyard, the word of the LORD came to him, saying,
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤄𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
וַיְהִ֣י לֹ֣א יְשַׁעְיָ֔הוּ יָצָ֔א הַתִּֽיכֹנָ֑ה הָעִיר וּדְבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה הָיָ֥ה אֵלָ֖יו לֵאמֹֽר׃ way·hî lō yə·ša‘·yā·hū yā·ṣā hat·tî·ḵō·nāh hå̄·ʿīr ū·ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh ’ê·lāw lê·mōr — WLC · 4

“Go back and tell… Hezekiah the leader of My people that this is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. vvv I will surely heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the house of the LORD.

שׁ֣וּב וְאָמַרְתָּ֞ אֶל־ חִזְקִיָּ֣הוּ נְגִיד־ עַמִּ֗י כֹּֽה־ יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵי֙ אָבִ֔יךָ דָּוִ֣ד אָמַ֤ר שָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙ אֶת־ תְּפִלָּתֶ֔ךָ רָאִ֖יתִי אֶת־ דִּמְעָתֶ֑ךָ הִנְנִי֙ רֹ֣פֶא לָ֔ךְ הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י בַּיּוֹם֙ תַּעֲלֶ֖ה בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ šūḇ wə·’ā·mar·tā ’el- ḥiz·qî·yā·hū nə·ḡîḏ- ‘am·mî kōh- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê ’ā·ḇî·ḵā dā·wiḏ ’ā·mar šā·ma‘·tî ’eṯ- tə·p̄il·lā·ṯe·ḵā rā·’î·ṯî ’eṯ- dim·‘ā·ṯe·ḵā hin·nî rō·p̄e lāḵ haš·šə·lî·šî bay·yō·wm ta·‘ă·leh bêṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 5

I will add fifteen… years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend… this city for My sake and for the sake of My servant David.’”

וְהֹסַפְתִּ֣י חֲמֵ֤שׁ עֶשְׂרֵה֙ שָׁנָ֔ה עַל־ יָמֶ֗יךָ אַצִּ֣ילְךָ֔ וְאֵ֖ת הַזֹּ֑את הָעִ֣יר וּמִכַּ֤ף מֶֽלֶךְ־ אַשּׁוּר֙ וְגַנּוֹתִי֙ עַל־ הַזֹּ֔את הָעִ֣יר לְמַֽעֲנִ֔י וּלְמַ֖עַן עַבְדִּֽי׃ דָּוִ֥ד wə·hō·sap̄·tî ḥă·mêš ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh ‘al- yā·me·ḵā ’aṣ·ṣî·lə·ḵā wə·’êṯ haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr ū·mik·kap̄ me·leḵ- ’aš·šūr wə·ḡan·nō·w·ṯî ‘al- haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr lə·ma·‘ă·nî ū·lə·ma·‘an ‘aḇ·dî dā·wiḏ — WLC · 6

Then Isaiah said, “Prepare a poultice of figs.” So they brought it and applied it to the boil, and [Hezekiah] recovered.

יְשַֽׁעְיָ֔הוּ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר קְח֖וּ דְּבֶ֣לֶת תְּאֵנִ֑ים וַיִּקְח֛וּ וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ עַֽל־ הַשְּׁחִ֖ין וַיֶּֽחִי׃ yə·ša‘·yā·hū way·yō·mer qə·ḥū də·ḇe·leṯ tə·’ê·nîm way·yiq·ḥū way·yā·śî·mū ‘al- haš·šə·ḥîn way·ye·ḥî — WLC · 7

Now Hezekiah… had asked Isaiah, “What will be the sign that the LORD will heal me and that I will go up to the house of the LORD on the third day?”
𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤓𐤐𐤀 𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌
חִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ אֶֽל־ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְשַׁעְיָ֔הוּ מָ֣ה א֔וֹת כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֖ה יִרְפָּ֥א לִ֑י וְעָלִ֛יתִי בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֖י בַּיּ֥וֹם ḥiz·qî·yā·hū ’el- way·yō·mer yə·ša‘·yā·hū māh ’ō·wṯ kî- Yah·weh yir·pā lî wə·‘ā·lî·ṯî bêṯ Yah·weh haš·šə·lî·šî bay·yō·wm — WLC · 8

And Isaiah had replied, “This will be a sign to you from the LORD that He - will do what He has promised: [Would you like] the shadow to go forward ten steps, or back ten steps?”
𐤉𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤑𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕
יְשַׁעְיָ֗הוּ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר זֶה־ הָאוֹת֙ לְּךָ֤ מֵאֵ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֚י יְהוָ֔ה אֶת־ הַדָּבָ֖ר יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֵּ֑ר הַצֵּל֙ הָלַ֤ךְ עֶ֣שֶׂר מַֽעֲל֔וֹת אִם־ יָשׁ֖וּב עֶ֥שֶׂר מַעֲלֽוֹת׃ yə·ša‘·yā·hū way·yō·mer zeh- hā·’ō·wṯ lə·ḵā mê·’êṯ Yah·weh kî Yah·weh ’eṯ- had·dā·ḇār ya·‘ă·śeh ’ă·šer dib·bêr haṣ·ṣêl hā·laḵ ‘e·śer ma·‘ă·lō·wṯ ’im- yā·šūḇ ‘e·śer ma·‘ă·lō·wṯ — WLC · 9

“It is easy for the shadow to lengthen ten steps,” answered Hezekiah, “but not… for it to go back ten steps.”

נָקֵ֣ל לַצֵּ֔ל לִנְט֖וֹת עֶ֣שֶׂר מַעֲל֑וֹת וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יְחִזְקִיָּ֔הוּ לֹ֣א כִ֔י הַצֵּ֛ל יָשׁ֥וּב אֲחֹרַנִּ֖ית עֶ֥שֶׂר מַעֲלֽוֹת׃ nā·qêl laṣ·ṣêl lin·ṭō·wṯ ‘e·śer ma·‘ă·lō·wṯ way·yō·mer yə·ḥiz·qî·yā·hū lō ḵî haṣ·ṣêl yā·šūḇ ’ă·ḥō·ran·nîṯ ‘e·śer ma·‘ă·lō·wṯ — WLC · 10

So Isaiah the prophet called out to the LORD, and He brought the shadow… back the ten steps it had descended on the stairway of Ahaz.

Hezekiah Shows His Treasures

At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent vvv letters and a gift to Hezekiah, for he had heard about Hezekiah’s illness.

הַהִ֡יא בָּעֵ֣ת בַּ֠לְאֲדָן בֶּֽן־ בַּלְאֲדָ֧ן מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֛ל שָׁלַ֡ח בְּרֹאדַ֣ךְ סְפָרִ֥ים וּמִנְחָ֖ה אֶל־ חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ כִּ֣י שָׁמַ֔ע כִּ֥י חִזְקִיָּֽהוּ׃ חָלָ֖ה ha·hî bā·‘êṯ bal·’ă·ḏān ben- bal·’ă·ḏān me·leḵ- bā·ḇel šā·laḥ bə·rō·ḏaḵ sə·p̄ā·rîm ū·min·ḥāh ’el- ḥiz·qî·yā·hū kî šā·ma‘ kî ḥiz·qî·yā·hū ḥā·lāh — WLC · 12

And Hezekiah received [the envoys] and showed them all that was in his treasure house— the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil, as well as his armory…— all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing… in his palace or in all his dominion that Hezekiah did not show them.

חִזְקִיָּהוּ֒ וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע עֲלֵיהֶם֮ וַיַּרְאֵ֣ם אֶת־ כָּל־ נְכֹתֹ֡ה אֶת־ בֵּ֣ית הַכֶּסֶף֩ וְאֶת־ הַזָּהָ֨ב וְאֶת־ הַבְּשָׂמִ֜ים וְאֵ֣ת׀ הַטּ֗וֹב וְאֵת֙ שֶׁ֣מֶן בֵּ֣ית כֵּלָ֔יו וְאֵ֛ת כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִמְצָ֖א בְּאֽוֹצְרֹתָ֑יו הָיָ֣ה לֹֽא־ דָבָ֗ר בְּבֵית֖וֹ וּבְכָל־ מֶמְשַׁלְתּֽוֹ׃ אֲ֠שֶׁר חִזְקִיָּ֛הוּ לֹֽא־ הֶרְאָ֧ם ḥiz·qî·yā·hū way·yiš·ma‘ ‘ă·lê·hem way·yar·’êm ’eṯ- kāl- nə·ḵō·ṯōh ’eṯ- bêṯ hak·ke·sep̄ wə·’eṯ- haz·zā·hāḇ wə·’eṯ- hab·bə·śā·mîm wə·’êṯ haṭ·ṭō·wḇ wə·’êṯ še·men bêṯ kê·lāw wə·’êṯ kāl- ’ă·šer nim·ṣā bə·’ō·wṣ·rō·ṯāw hā·yāh lō- ḏā·ḇār bə·ḇê·ṯōw ū·ḇə·ḵāl mem·šal·tōw ’ă·šer ḥiz·qî·yā·hū lō- her·’ām — WLC · 13

Then the prophet Isaiah went to King Hezekiah and asked, “Where did those men come from…, and what did they say to you?” “They came from a distant land,” Hezekiah replied, “from Babylon.”

“What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked. “They have seen everything in my palace,” answered Hezekiah. “There is nothing… among my treasures that I did not show them.”

Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the LORD:

The time will surely come when everything in your palace and all that your fathers have stored up until this day will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing… will be left, says the LORD.

And some of - your descendants, your own flesh and blood, will be taken away to be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.”

But Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “Will there not at least be peace and security in my lifetime?”

As for the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, along with all his might and how he constructed the pool and the tunnel to bring water into the city,… are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles… of the Kings of Judah?
