Chapter 10

Saul’s Overthrow and Death

1

Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them, and [many] fell slain on Mount Gilboa.

𐤅𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤋𐤅 𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤄𐤓 𐤂𐤋𐤁𐤏

The Philistines… followed hard after Saul… and his sons, and they killed… Saul’s sons Jonathan, Abinadab, vvv and Malchishua.

When the battle intensified against Saul, the archers overtook him… and wounded him…

𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤁𐤃 𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤒𐤔𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤋 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤌

הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ וַתִּכְבַּ֤ד עַל־ שָׁא֔וּל הַמּוֹרִ֣ים וַיִּמְצָאֻ֖הוּ בַּקָּ֑שֶׁת וַיָּ֖חֶל מִן־ הַיּוֹרִֽים׃ ham·mil·ḥā·māh wat·tiḵ·baḏ ‘al- šā·’ūl ham·mō·w·rîm way·yim·ṣā·’u·hū baq·qā·šeṯ way·yā·ḥel min- hay·yō·w·rîmWLC · 3

Then Saul said to his armor-bearer…, “Draw your sword and run me through with it, or these uncircumcised men will come and torture me!” But his armor-bearer… was terrified… and refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.

When his armor-bearer… saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his own sword and died.

𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤌𐤕 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤂𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤕𐤎

נֹשֵֽׂא־ כֵלָ֖יו וַיַּ֥רְא כִּ֣י שָׁא֑וּל מֵ֣ת ה֛וּא גַּם־ וַיִּפֹּ֥ל עַל־ הַחֶ֖רֶב וַיָּמֹֽת׃ס nō·śê- ḵê·lāw way·yar kî šā·’ūl mêṯ hū gam- way·yip·pōl ‘al- ha·ḥe·reḇ way·yā·mōṯWLC · 5

So Saul died together with his three sons and all his house.

שָׁאוּל֙ מֵֽתוּ׃ יַחְדָּ֥ו וּשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת בָּנָ֔יו וַיָּ֤מָת וְכָל־ בֵּית֖וֹ šā·’ūl mê·ṯū yaḥ·dāw ū·šə·lō·šeṯ bā·nāw way·yā·māṯ wə·ḵāl bê·ṯōwWLC · 6

The Philistines Possess the Towns

When all the Israelites… in the valley saw that [the army] had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied [their cities].

𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤒 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤎𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤅 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎𐤅 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤎

כָּל־ אִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל אֲשֶׁר־ בָּעֵ֙מֶק֙ וַ֠יִּרְאוּ כִּ֣י נָ֔סוּ וְכִי־ שָׁא֣וּל וּבָנָ֑יו מֵ֖תוּ וַיַּעַזְב֤וּ עָרֵיהֶם֙ וַיָּנֻ֔סוּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ בָּהֶֽם׃ס kāl- ’îš yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer- bā·‘ê·meq way·yir·’ū kî nā·sū wə·ḵî- šā·’ūl ū·ḇā·nāw mê·ṯū way·ya·‘az·ḇū ‘ā·rê·hem way·yā·nu·sū p̄ə·liš·tîm way·yā·ḇō·’ū way·yê·šə·ḇū bā·hemWLC · 7

  • The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤌𐤌𐤇𐤓𐤕 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤔𐤈 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤄𐤓 𐤂𐤋𐤁𐤏

וַיְהִי֙ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ לְפַשֵּׁ֖ט אֶת־ הַֽחֲלָלִ֑ים וַֽיִּמְצְא֤וּ אֶת־ שָׁאוּל֙ וְאֶת־ בָּנָ֔יו נֹפְלִ֖ים בְּהַ֥ר גִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃ way·hî mim·mā·ḥo·rāṯ p̄ə·liš·tîm way·yā·ḇō·’ū lə·p̄aš·šêṭ ’eṯ- ha·ḥă·lā·lîm way·yim·ṣə·’ū ’eṯ- šā·’ūl wə·’eṯ- bā·nāw nō·p̄ə·lîm bə·har gil·bō·a‘WLC · 8

They stripped Saul, cut off his head, took his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines… to proclaim the news [in the temple] of their idols and among their people.

𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤔𐤉𐤈𐤄𐤅 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤋𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤑𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌

וַיַּ֨פְשִׁיטֻ֔הוּ רֹאשׁ֖וֹ וְאֶת־ וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ אֶת־ כֵּלָ֑יו וַיְשַׁלְּח֨וּ בְאֶֽרֶץ־ פְלִשְׁתִּ֜ים סָבִ֗יב לְבַשֵּׂ֛ר אֶת־ עֲצַבֵּיהֶ֖ם וְאֶת־ הָעָֽם׃ way·yap̄·šî·ṭu·hū rō·šōw wə·’eṯ- way·yiś·’ū ’eṯ- kê·lāw way·šal·lə·ḥū ḇə·’e·reṣ- p̄ə·liš·tīm sā·ḇîḇ lə·ḇaś·śêr ’eṯ- ‘ă·ṣab·bê·hem wə·’eṯ- hā·‘āmWLC · 9

They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung his head in the temple of Dagon.

וַיָּשִׂ֙ימוּ֙ אֶת־ כֵּלָ֔יו בֵּ֖ית אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם וְאֶת־ תָקְע֖וּ גֻּלְגָּלְתּ֥וֹ בֵּ֥ית דָּגֽוֹן׃ס way·yā·śî·mū ’eṯ- kê·lāw bêṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê·hem wə·’eṯ- ṯā·qə·‘ū gul·gā·lə·tōw bêṯ dā·ḡō·wnWLC · 10

Jabesh-gilead’s Tribute to Saul

When all [the people of] Jabesh-gilead… heard about everything the Philistines had done to Saul,

𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤔 𐤂𐤋𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋

כֹּ֖ל יָבֵ֣ישׁ גִּלְעָ֑ד אֵ֛ת וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֔וּ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁר־ פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים עָשׂ֥וּ לְשָׁאֽוּל׃ kōl yā·ḇêš gil·‘āḏ ’êṯ way·yiš·mə·‘ū kāl- ’ă·šer- p̄ə·liš·tîm ‘ā·śū lə·šā·’ūlWLC · 11

all their men of valor set out and retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh and fasted seven days.

כָּל־ אִ֣ישׁ חַיִל֒ וַיָּקוּמוּ֮ וַיִּשְׂא֞וּ אֶת־ גּוּפַ֣ת שָׁא֗וּל וְאֵת֙ גּוּפֹ֣ת בָּנָ֔יו וַיְבִיא֖וּם יָבֵ֑ישָׁה וַיִּקְבְּר֨וּ אֶת־ עַצְמוֹתֵיהֶ֜ם תַּ֤חַת הָאֵלָה֙ בְּיָבֵ֔שׁ וַיָּצ֖וּמוּ שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִֽים׃ kāl- ’îš ḥa·yil way·yā·qū·mū way·yiś·’ū ’eṯ- gū·p̄aṯ šā·’ūl wə·’êṯ gū·p̄ōṯ bā·nāw way·ḇî·’ūm yā·ḇê·šāh way·yiq·bə·rū ’eṯ- ‘aṣ·mō·w·ṯê·hem ta·ḥaṯ hā·’ê·lāh bə·yā·ḇêš way·yā·ṣū·mū šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîmWLC · 12

So Saul died… for his unfaithfulness to the LORD,… because he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance,

𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤕 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤁 𐤋𐤃𐤓𐤅𐤔

שָׁא֗וּל וַיָּ֣מָת מָעַ֣ל בְּמַֽעֲלוֹ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּֽיהוָ֔ה עַל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹא־ שָׁמָ֑ר דְּבַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה וְגַם־ לִשְׁא֥וֹל בָּא֖וֹב לִדְרֽוֹשׁ׃ šā·’ūl way·yā·māṯ mā·‘al bə·ma·‘ă·lōw ’ă·šer Yah·weh ‘al- ’ă·šer lō- šā·mār də·ḇar Yah·weh wə·ḡam- liš·’ō·wl bā·’ō·wḇ liḏ·rō·wōšWLC · 13

and he failed to inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

וְלֹֽא־ דָרַ֥שׁ בַּֽיהוָ֖ה וַיְמִיתֵ֑הוּ הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה וַיַּסֵּב֙ אֶת־ לְדָוִ֖יד בֶּן־ יִשָֽׁי׃פ wə·lō- ḏā·raš Yah·weh way·mî·ṯê·hū ham·mə·lū·ḵāh way·yas·sêḇ ’eṯ- lə·ḏā·wîḏ ben- yi·šāyWLC · 14
