Chapter 13
David Fetches the Ark
1
Then David conferred with all his leaders, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds.
𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤏𐤑 𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤍𐤂𐤉𐤃 𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕
דָּוִ֗יד וַיִּוָּעַ֣ץ עִם־ לְכָל־ נָגִֽיד׃ שָׂרֵ֧י הָאֲלָפִ֛ים וְהַמֵּא֖וֹת dā·wîḏ way·yiw·wā·‘aṣ ‘im- lə·ḵāl nā·ḡîḏ śā·rê hā·’ă·lā·p̄îm wə·ham·mê·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 1

And he said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if this is of the LORD our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our brothers in all the land of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites in their cities and pasturelands, so that they may join us.

דָּוִ֜יד וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לְכֹ֣ל׀ קְהַ֣ל יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אִם־ ט֜וֹב עֲלֵיכֶ֨ם וּמִן־ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ נִשְׁלְחָ֞ה נִפְרְצָה֙ עַל־ הַנִּשְׁאָרִ֗ים אַחֵ֣ינוּ בְּכֹל֙ אַרְצ֣וֹת יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְעִמָּהֶ֛ם הַכֹּהֲנִ֥ים וְהַלְוִיִּ֖ם בְּעָרֵ֣י מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶ֑ם וְיִקָּבְצ֖וּ אֵלֵֽינוּ׃ dā·wîḏ way·yō·mer lə·ḵōl qə·hal yiś·rā·’êl ’im- ṭō·wḇ ‘ă·lê·ḵem ū·min- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū niš·lə·ḥāh nip̄·rə·ṣāh ‘al- han·niš·’ā·rîm ’a·ḥê·nū bə·ḵōl ’ar·ṣō·wṯ yiś·rā·’êl wə·‘im·mā·hem hak·kō·hă·nîm wə·hal·wî·yim bə·‘ā·rê miḡ·rə·šê·hem wə·yiq·qā·ḇə·ṣū ’ê·lê·nū — WLC · 2

Then let us bring back the ark of our God…, for we did not inquire of Him in the days of Saul.”

וְנָסֵ֛בָּה אֶת־ אֲר֥וֹן אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ אֵלֵ֑ינוּ כִּי־ לֹ֥א דְרַשְׁנֻ֖הוּ בִּימֵ֥י שָׁאֽוּל׃ wə·nā·sêb·bāh ’eṯ- ’ă·rō·wn ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū ’ê·lê·nū kî- lō ḏə·raš·nu·hū bî·mê šā·’ūl — WLC · 3

And because this proposal seemed right to all the people, the whole assembly agreed to it…

וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ כִּֽי־ הַדָּבָ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֥י יָשַׁ֥ר כָל־ הָעָֽם׃ כָֽל־ הַקָּהָ֖ל לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת כֵּ֑ן way·yō·mə·rū kî- had·dā·ḇār bə·‘ê·nê yā·šar ḵāl hā·‘ām ḵāl haq·qā·hāl la·‘ă·śō·wṯ kên — WLC · 4

So David assembled all Israel, from the [River] Shihor in Egypt to Lebo-hamath…,… to bring the ark of God vvv from Kiriath-jearim.

David and all Israel went up to Baalah… of Judah (vvv that is, Kiriath-jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who is enthroned [between] the cherubim— [the ark] that is called by the Name.

דָּוִ֤יד וְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיַּ֨עַל בַּעֲלָ֔תָה אֶל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לִיהוּדָ֑ה קִרְיַ֥ת יְעָרִ֖ים לְהַעֲל֣וֹת מִשָּׁ֗ם אֵת֩ אֲר֨וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֧ים׀ יְהוָ֛ה יוֹשֵׁ֥ב הַכְּרוּבִ֖ים אֲשֶׁר־ נִקְרָ֥א שֵֽׁם׃ dā·wîḏ wə·ḵāl yiś·rā·’êl way·ya·‘al ba·‘ă·lā·ṯāh ’el- ’ă·šer lî·hū·ḏāh qir·yaṯ yə·‘ā·rîm lə·ha·‘ă·lō·wṯ miš·šām ’êṯ ’ă·rō·wn hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm Yah·weh yō·wō·šêḇ hak·kə·rū·ḇîm ’ă·šer- niq·rā šêm — WLC · 6

So they carried the ark of God from the house of Abinadab on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding the cart.

Uzzah Touches the Ark

David and all the Israelites were celebrating before God with all their might, with songs and on harps and lyres, with tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.

When they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah - reached out and took hold of the ark, because the oxen had stumbled.
𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤏𐤃 𐤂𐤓𐤍 𐤊𐤉𐤃𐤍 𐤏𐤆𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤈𐤅
וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ עַד־ גֹּ֣רֶן כִּידֹ֑ן עֻזָּ֜א אֶת־ יָד֗וֹ וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח לֶאֱחֹז֙ אֶת־ הָ֣אָר֔וֹן כִּ֥י הַבָּקָֽר׃ שָֽׁמְט֖וּ way·yā·ḇō·’ū ‘aḏ- gō·ren kî·ḏōn ‘uz·zā ’eṯ- yā·ḏōw way·yiš·laḥ le·’ĕ·ḥōz ’eṯ- hā·’ā·rō·wn kî hab·bā·qār šā·mə·ṭū — WLC · 9

And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and He struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.

אַ֤ף יְהוָה֙ וַיִּֽחַר־ בְּעֻזָּ֔א וַיַּכֵּ֕הוּ עַ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־ שָׁלַ֥ח יָד֖וֹ עַל־ הָאָר֑וֹן וַיָּ֥מָת שָׁ֖ם לִפְנֵ֥י אֱלֹהִֽים׃ ’ap̄ Yah·weh way·yi·ḥar- bə·‘uz·zā way·yak·kê·hū ‘al ’ă·šer- šā·laḥ yā·ḏōw ‘al- hā·’ā·rō·wn way·yā·māṯ šām lip̄·nê ’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 10

Then David became angry because the LORD had burst forth… against Uzzah. So he named that place vvv Perez-uzzah, as it is [called] to this day.

לְדָוִ֔יד וַיִּ֣חַר כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֛ה פָרַ֧ץ פֶּ֖רֶץ בְּעֻזָּ֑א וַיִּקְרָ֞א הַהוּא֙ לַמָּק֤וֹם פֶּ֣רֶץ עֻזָּ֔א עַ֖ד הַזֶּֽה׃ הַיּ֥וֹם lə·ḏā·wîḏ way·yi·ḥar kî- Yah·weh p̄ā·raṣ pe·reṣ bə·‘uz·zā way·yiq·rā ha·hū lam·mā·qō·wm pe·reṣ ‘uz·zā ‘aḏ haz·zeh hay·yō·wm — WLC · 11

That day David feared God and asked, “How can I ever bring the ark of God to me -?”

הַה֖וּא בַּיּ֥וֹם דָוִיד֙ אֶת־ וַיִּירָ֤א הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים לֵאמֹ֑ר הֵ֚יךְ אָבִ֣יא אֲר֥וֹן הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ אֵלַ֔י אֵ֖ת ha·hū bay·yō·wm ḏā·wîḏ ’eṯ- way·yî·rā hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm lê·mōr hêḵ ’ā·ḇî ’ă·rō·wn hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ê·lay ’êṯ — WLC · 12

So [he] did not move the ark with him to the City of David; instead, he took it aside to the house vvv of Obed-edom the Gittite.

דָּוִ֧יד אֶת־ וְלֹֽא־ הֵסִ֨יר הָאָר֛וֹן אֵלָ֖יו עִ֣יר דָּוִ֑יד וַיַּטֵּ֕הוּ אֶל־ אֶל־ בֵּ֥ית עֹבֵֽד־ אֱדֹ֖ם הַגִּתִּֽי׃ dā·wîḏ ’eṯ- wə·lō- hê·sîr hā·’ā·rō·wn ’ê·lāw ‘îr dā·wîḏ way·yaṭ·ṭê·hū ’el- ’el- bêṯ ‘ō·ḇêḏ- ’ĕ·ḏōm hag·git·tî — WLC · 13

Thus the ark of God remained with the family vvv of Obed-edom in his house for three months, and the LORD blessed vvv [his] household and everything he owned.
