Chapter 14
David’s Family Grows

Now Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons…, and carpenters…, to build a palace for him.
𐤇𐤉𐤓𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤑𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤓𐤆𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤑𐤉 𐤅𐤇𐤓𐤔𐤉 𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤇𐤓𐤔𐤉 𐤏𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤅

And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and had highly exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.

And David took more wives in Jerusalem [and] became the father of more sons and daughters.

Two Victories over the Philistines

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they all went in search of [him]; but David learned [of this] and went out to face them.

Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley of Rephaim.

וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים בָּ֑אוּ וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֖וּ בְּעֵ֥מֶק רְפָאִֽים׃ ū·p̄ə·liš·tîm bā·’ū way·yip̄·šə·ṭū bə·‘ê·meq rə·p̄ā·’îm — WLC · 9

So David inquired of God “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go,” replied the LORD, “for I will deliver them into your hand.”

So [David and his men] went up vvv to Baal-perazim, where [he] defeated the Philistines [and] said, “Like a bursting flood, God has burst out against my enemies by my hand.” So… they called… that vvv place Baal-perazim.

וַיַּעֲל֥וּ בְּבַֽעַל־ פְּרָצִים֮ דָּוִיד֒ וַיַּכֵּ֣ם שָׁ֣ם דָּוִ֔יד וַיֹּ֣אמֶר כְּפֶ֣רֶץ מָ֑יִם הָֽאֱלֹהִ֧ים אֶת־ פָּרַ֨ץ אוֹיְבַ֛י בְּיָדִ֖י עַל־ כֵּ֗ן קָֽרְא֛וּ שֵֽׁם־ הַה֖וּא בַּ֥עַל הַמָּק֥וֹם פְּרָצִֽים׃ way·ya·‘ă·lū bə·ḇa·‘al- pə·rā·ṣîm dā·wîḏ way·yak·kêm šām dā·wîḏ way·yō·mer kə·p̄e·reṣ mā·yim hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- pā·raṣ ’ō·wy·ḇay bə·yā·ḏî ‘al- kên qā·rə·’ū šêm- ha·hū ba·‘al ham·mā·qō·wm pə·rā·ṣîm — WLC · 11

There the Philistines abandoned their gods, and David ordered that they be burned in the fire.

שָׁ֖ם וַיַּעַזְבוּ־ אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֑ם אֶת־ דָּוִ֔יד וַיֹּ֣אמֶר וַיִּשָּׂרְפ֖וּ בָּאֵֽשׁ׃פ šām way·ya·‘az·ḇū- ’ĕ·lō·hê·hem ’eṯ- dā·wîḏ way·yō·mer way·yiś·śā·rə·p̄ū bā·’êš — WLC · 12

Once again… the Philistines raided the valley.

וַיֹּסִ֤יפוּ עוֹד֙ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֖וּ בָּעֵֽמֶק׃ way·yō·sî·p̄ū ‘ō·wḏ pə·liš·tîm way·yip̄·šə·ṭū bā·‘ê·meq — WLC · 13

So David again inquired of God, who answered him, “Do not march up after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the balsam trees.

דָּוִיד֙ ע֤וֹד וַיִּשְׁאַ֨ל בֵּֽאלֹהִ֔ים הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ לֹ֥א תַֽעֲלֶ֖ה אַֽחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם הָסֵב֙ מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֔ם וּבָ֥אתָ לָהֶ֖ם מִמּ֥וּל הַבְּכָאִֽים׃ dā·wîḏ ‘ō·wḏ way·yiš·’al bê·lō·hîm hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer lōw lō ṯa·‘ă·leh ’a·ḥă·rê·hem hā·sêḇ mê·‘ă·lê·hem ū·ḇā·ṯā lā·hem mim·mūl hab·bə·ḵā·’îm — WLC · 14

As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, vvv move out to battle, because this will mean that God has gone out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”

וִ֠יהִי כְּֽשָׁמְעֲךָ֞ אֶת־ ק֤וֹל הַצְּעָדָה֙ בְּרָאשֵׁ֣י הַבְּכָאִ֔ים אָ֖ז תֵּצֵ֣א בַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה כִּֽי־ הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ יָצָ֤א לְפָנֶ֔יךָ לְהַכּ֖וֹת אֶת־ מַחֲנֵ֥ה פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ wî·hî kə·šā·mə·‘ă·ḵā ’eṯ- qō·wl haṣ·ṣə·‘ā·ḏāh bə·rā·šê hab·bə·ḵā·’îm ’āz tê·ṣê ḇam·mil·ḥā·māh kî- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm yā·ṣā lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā lə·hak·kō·wṯ ’eṯ- ma·ḥă·nêh p̄ə·liš·tîm — WLC · 15

So David did as God had commanded him, and they struck down the army of the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.

דָּוִ֔יד וַיַּ֣עַשׂ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים צִוָּ֖הוּ וַיַּכּוּ֙ אֶת־ מַחֲנֵ֣ה פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וְעַד־ מִגִּבְע֖וֹן גָּֽזְרָה׃ dā·wîḏ way·ya·‘aś ka·’ă·šer hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ṣiw·wā·hū way·yak·kū ’eṯ- ma·ḥă·nêh p̄ə·liš·tîm wə·‘aḏ- mig·giḇ·‘ō·wn gā·zə·rāh — WLC · 16

And David’s fame went out into every land, and the LORD caused all nations to fear him…
