Chapter 28
David Commissions Solomon
1
Now David summoned all the leaders of Israel to Jerusalem: the leaders of the tribes, the leaders of the divisions in the king’s service, the commanders of thousands [and] of hundreds, and the officials in charge of all the property and cattle of the king and his sons, along with the court officials and mighty men— every mighty man of valor.

Then King David rose to his feet and said, “Listen to me, my brothers and my people… It was in my heart to build a house as a resting place for the ark of the covenant of the LORD and as a footstool… for our God. I had made preparations to build it,

הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ דָּוִ֤יד וַיָּ֨קָם עַל־ רַגְלָ֔יו וַיֹּ֕אמֶר שְׁמָע֖וּנִי אַחַ֣י וְעַמִּ֑י אֲנִ֣י עִם־ לְבָבִ֡י לִבְנוֹת֩ בֵּ֨ית מְנוּחָ֜ה לַאֲר֣וֹן בְּרִית־ יְהוָ֗ה וְלַהֲדֹם֙ רַגְלֵ֣י אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ וַהֲכִינ֖וֹתִי לִבְנֽוֹת׃ ham·me·leḵ dā·wîḏ way·yā·qām ‘al- raḡ·lāw way·yō·mer šə·mā·‘ū·nî ’a·ḥay wə·‘am·mî ’ă·nî ‘im- lə·ḇā·ḇî liḇ·nō·wṯ bêṯ mə·nū·ḥāh la·’ă·rō·wn bə·rîṯ- Yah·weh wə·la·hă·ḏōm raḡ·lê ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū wa·hă·ḵî·nō·w·ṯî liḇ·nō·wṯ — WLC · 2

but God said to me, ‘You are not to build a house for My Name, because you are a man of war who has shed blood.’

וְהָאֱלֹהִים֙ אָ֣מַר לִ֔י לֹא־ תִבְנֶ֥ה בַ֖יִת לִשְׁמִ֑י כִּ֣י אַ֖תָּה אִ֧ישׁ מִלְחָמ֛וֹת שָׁפָֽכְתָּ׃ וְדָמִ֥ים wə·hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ā·mar lî lō- ṯiḇ·neh ḇa·yiṯ liš·mî kî ’at·tāh ’îš mil·ḥā·mō·wṯ šā·p̄ā·ḵə·tā wə·ḏā·mîm — WLC · 3

Yet the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me out of all my father’s house to be king over Israel forever. For He chose Judah as leader, and from the house of Judah [He chose] my father’s household, and from my father’s… sons He was pleased to make me king over all Israel.

And of all my sons— for the LORD has given me many sons— He has chosen Solomon my son to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel.
𐤅𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤉 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤎𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
וּמִכָּ֨ל־ בָּנַ֔י כִּ֚י יְהוָ֑ה נָ֥תַן לִ֖י רַבִּ֣ים בָּנִ֔ים וַיִּבְחַר֙ בִּשְׁלֹמֹ֣ה בְנִ֔י לָשֶׁ֗בֶת עַל־ כִּסֵּ֛א מַלְכ֥וּת יְהוָ֖ה עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ū·mik·kāl- bā·nay kî Yah·weh nā·ṯan lî rab·bîm bā·nîm way·yiḇ·ḥar biš·lō·mōh ḇə·nî lā·še·ḇeṯ ‘al- kis·sê mal·ḵūṯ Yah·weh ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 5

And He said to me, ‘Solomon your son is the one who will build My house and My courts, for I have chosen him [as] My son, and I will be his Father.
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤊 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤇𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤁
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לִ֔י שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה בִנְךָ֔ הֽוּא־ יִבְנֶ֥ה בֵיתִ֖י וַחֲצֵרוֹתָ֑י כִּי־ בָחַ֨רְתִּי ב֥וֹ לִי֙ לְבֵ֔ן וַאֲנִ֖י אֶֽהְיֶה־ לּ֥וֹ לְאָֽב׃ way·yō·mer lî šə·lō·mōh ḇin·ḵā hū- yiḇ·neh ḇê·ṯî wa·ḥă·ṣê·rō·w·ṯāy kî- ḇā·ḥar·tî ḇōw lî lə·ḇên wa·’ă·nî ’eh·yeh- lōw lə·’āḇ — WLC · 6

I will establish his kingdom forever…, if he resolutely carries out My commandments and ordinances, as is being done this day.’

וַהֲכִינוֹתִ֥י אֶת־ מַלְכוּת֖וֹ עַד־ לְעוֹלָ֑ם אִם־ יֶחֱזַ֗ק לַעֲשׂ֛וֹת מִצְוֺתַ֥י וּמִשְׁפָּטַ֖י כַּיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ wa·hă·ḵî·nō·w·ṯî ’eṯ- mal·ḵū·ṯōw ‘aḏ- lə·‘ō·w·lām ’im- ye·ḥĕ·zaq la·‘ă·śō·wṯ miṣ·wō·ṯay ū·miš·pā·ṭay kay·yō·wm haz·zeh — WLC · 7

So now in the sight of all Israel, the assembly of the LORD, and in the hearing of our God, keep and seek out all the commandments of the LORD your God, so that you may possess this good land and leave it as an inheritance to your descendants… forever…

וְ֠עַתָּה לְעֵינֵ֨י כָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל קְהַל־ יְהוָה֙ וּבְאָזְנֵ֣י אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ שִׁמְר֣וּ וְדִרְשׁ֔וּ כָּל־ מִצְוֺ֖ת יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם לְמַ֤עַן תִּֽירְשׁוּ֙ אֶת־ הַטּוֹבָ֔ה הָאָ֣רֶץ וְהִנְחַלְתֶּ֛ם לִבְנֵיכֶ֥ם אַחֲרֵיכֶ֖ם עַד־ עוֹלָֽם׃פ wə·‘at·tāh lə·‘ê·nê ḵāl yiś·rā·’êl qə·hal- Yah·weh ū·ḇə·’ā·zə·nê ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū šim·rū wə·ḏir·šū kāl- miṣ·wōṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem lə·ma·‘an tî·rə·šū ’eṯ- haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh hā·’ā·reṣ wə·hin·ḥal·tem liḇ·nê·ḵem ’a·ḥă·rê·ḵem ‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lām — WLC · 8

As for you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve Him wholeheartedly… and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands the intent of every thought. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.

וְאַתָּ֣ה שְׁלֹמֹֽה־ בְנִ֡י דַּע֩ אֶת־ אֱלֹהֵ֨י אָבִ֜יךָ וְעָבְדֵ֗הוּ בְּלֵ֤ב שָׁלֵם֙ חֲפֵצָ֔ה וּבְנֶ֣פֶשׁ כִּ֤י יְהוָ֔ה דּוֹרֵ֣שׁ כָל־ לְבָבוֹת֙ מֵבִ֑ין יֵ֥צֶר וְכָל־ מַחֲשָׁב֖וֹת אִֽם־ תִּדְרְשֶׁ֙נּוּ֙ יִמָּ֣צֵא לָ֔ךְ וְאִם־ תַּֽעַזְבֶ֖נּוּ יַזְנִיחֲךָ֥ לָעַֽד׃ wə·’at·tāh šə·lō·mōh- ḇə·nî da‘ ’eṯ- ’ĕ·lō·hê ’ā·ḇî·ḵā wə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏê·hū bə·lêḇ šā·lêm ḥă·p̄ê·ṣāh ū·ḇə·ne·p̄eš kî Yah·weh dō·w·rêš ḵāl lə·ḇā·ḇō·wṯ mê·ḇîn yê·ṣer wə·ḵāl ma·ḥă·šā·ḇō·wṯ ’im- tiḏ·rə·šen·nū yim·mā·ṣê lāḵ wə·’im- ta·‘az·ḇen·nū yaz·nî·ḥă·ḵā lā·‘aḏ — WLC · 9

Consider now that the LORD has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary. Be strong and do it.”

The Plans for the Temple

Then David gave his son Solomon the plans for the portico [of the temple], its buildings, storehouses, upper rooms, inner rooms, and the room for the mercy seat.

The plans contained everything [David] had in mind for the courts of the house of the LORD, for all the surrounding rooms, for the treasuries of the house of God [and] of the dedicated things,

for the divisions of the priests and Levites, for all the work of service in the house of the LORD, and for all the articles of service in the house of the LORD:
