Chapter 14
Asa Reigns in Judah
1
Then Abijah rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David. And his son Asa reigned in his place, and in his days the land was at peace [for] ten years.

אֲבִיָּ֜ה וַיִּשְׁכַּ֨ב עִם־ אֲבֹתָ֗יו וַיִּקְבְּר֤וּ אֹתוֹ֙ בְּעִ֣יר דָּוִ֔יד בְנ֖וֹ אָסָ֥א וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ תַּחְתָּ֑יו בְּיָמָ֛יו הָאָ֖רֶץ שָׁקְטָ֥ה עֶ֥שֶׂר שָׁנִֽים׃פ ’ă·ḇî·yāh way·yiš·kaḇ ‘im- ’ă·ḇō·ṯāw way·yiq·bə·rū ’ō·ṯōw bə·‘îr dā·wîḏ ḇə·nōw ’ā·sā way·yim·lōḵ taḥ·tāw bə·yā·māw hā·’ā·reṣ šā·qə·ṭāh ‘e·śer šā·nîm — WLC · 1

And Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God.
𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤄𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅
אָסָא֙ וַיַּ֤עַשׂ הַטּ֣וֹב וְהַיָּשָׁ֔ר בְּעֵינֵ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָֽיו׃ ’ā·sā way·ya·‘aś haṭ·ṭō·wḇ wə·hay·yā·šār bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāw — WLC · 2

He removed the foreign altars and high places, shattered the sacred pillars, and chopped down the Asherah poles.
𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤍𐤊𐤓 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤑𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤃𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌
וַיָּ֛סַר אֶת־ הַנֵּכָ֖ר מִזְבְּח֥וֹת וְהַבָּמ֑וֹת וַיְשַׁבֵּר֙ אֶת־ הַמַּצֵּב֔וֹת וַיְגַדַּ֖ע אֶת־ הָאֲשֵׁרִֽים׃ way·yā·sar ’eṯ- han·nê·ḵār miz·bə·ḥō·wṯ wə·hab·bā·mō·wṯ way·šab·bêr ’eṯ- ham·maṣ·ṣê·ḇō·wṯ way·ḡad·da‘ ’eṯ- hā·’ă·šê·rîm — WLC · 3

He commanded the people of Judah to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, and to observe the law and the commandments.
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤃𐤓𐤅𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤄
וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לִֽיהוּדָ֔ה לִדְר֕וֹשׁ אֶת־ יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם וְלַעֲשׂ֖וֹת הַתּוֹרָ֥ה וְהַמִּצְוָֽה׃ way·yō·mer lî·hū·ḏāh liḏ·rō·wōš ’eṯ- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·hem wə·la·‘ă·śō·wṯ hat·tō·w·rāh wə·ham·miṣ·wāh — WLC · 4

He also removed the high places and incense altars from all the cities of Judah, and under him the kingdom was at peace.

וַיָּ֙סַר֙ הַבָּמ֖וֹת וְאֶת־ הַֽחַמָּנִ֑ים מִכָּל־ עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה אֶת־ לְפָנָֽיו׃ הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה וַתִּשְׁקֹ֥ט way·yā·sar hab·bā·mō·wṯ wə·’eṯ- ha·ḥam·mā·nîm mik·kāl ‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh ’eṯ- lə·p̄ā·nāw ham·mam·lā·ḵāh wat·tiš·qōṭ — WLC · 5

Because the land was at peace, Asa built fortified cities in Judah. In those days no one made war with him, because the LORD had given him rest.

כִּֽי־ הָאָ֗רֶץ שָׁקְטָ֣ה וַיִּ֛בֶן מְצוּרָ֖ה עָרֵ֥י בִּיהוּדָ֑ה הָאֵ֔לֶּה בַּשָּׁנִ֣ים וְאֵין־ מִלְחָמָה֙ עִמּ֤וֹ כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֖ה לֽוֹ׃ הֵנִ֥יחַ kî- hā·’ā·reṣ šā·qə·ṭāh way·yi·ḇen mə·ṣū·rāh ‘ā·rê bî·hū·ḏāh hā·’êl·leh baš·šā·nîm wə·’ên- mil·ḥā·māh ‘im·mōw kî- Yah·weh lōw hê·nî·aḥ — WLC · 6

So he said to the people of Judah, “Let us build these cities and surround them with walls and towers, with doors and bars. The land is still ours because we have sought the LORD our God. We have sought [Him], and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and prospered.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לִֽיהוּדָ֜ה נִבְנֶ֣ה׀ אֶת־ הָאֵ֗לֶּה הֶעָרִ֣ים וְנָסֵ֨ב חוֹמָ֣ה וּמִגְדָּלִים֮ דְּלָתַ֣יִם וּבְרִיחִים֒ הָאָ֜רֶץ עוֹדֶ֨נּוּ לְפָנֵ֗ינוּ כִּ֤י דָרַ֙שְׁנוּ֙ אֶת־ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ דָּרַ֕שְׁנוּ וַיָּ֥נַֽח לָ֖נוּ מִסָּבִ֑יב וַיִּבְנ֖וּ וַיַּצְלִֽיחוּ׃פ way·yō·mer lî·hū·ḏāh niḇ·neh ’eṯ- hā·’êl·leh he·‘ā·rîm wə·nā·sêḇ ḥō·w·māh ū·miḡ·dā·lîm də·lā·ṯa·yim ū·ḇə·rî·ḥîm hā·’ā·reṣ ‘ō·w·ḏen·nū lə·p̄ā·nê·nū kî ḏā·raš·nū ’eṯ- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū dā·raš·nū way·yā·naḥ lā·nū mis·sā·ḇîḇ way·yiḇ·nū way·yaṣ·lî·ḥū — WLC · 7

Asa had an army of 300,000 men… from Judah bearing large shields and spears, and 280,000 men… from Benjamin bearing small shields and drawing the bow. All these [were] mighty men of valor.
𐤋𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤔𐤋𐤔 𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤎 𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤑𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤓𐤌𐤇 𐤌𐤀𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤅𐤌𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌𐤍 𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤉 𐤌𐤂𐤍 𐤅𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉 𐤒𐤔𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤉 𐤇𐤉𐤋
לְאָסָ֗א וַיְהִ֣י חַיִל֮ שְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֣וֹת אֶ֔לֶףס מִֽיהוּדָה֙ נֹשֵׂ֣א צִנָּ֣ה וָרֹמַח֒ מָאתַ֥יִם וּשְׁמוֹנִ֖ים אָ֑לֶף וּמִבִּנְיָמִ֗ן נֹשְׂאֵ֤י מָגֵן֙ וְדֹ֣רְכֵי קֶ֔שֶׁת כָּל־ אֵ֖לֶּה גִּבּ֥וֹרֵי חָֽיִל׃ lə·’ā·sā way·hî ḥa·yil šə·lōš mê·’ō·wṯ ʾɛ·lɛ·p̄s mî·hū·ḏāh nō·śê ṣin·nāh wā·rō·maḥ mā·ṯa·yim ū·šə·mō·w·nîm ’ā·lep̄ ū·mib·bin·yā·min nō·śə·’ê mā·ḡên wə·ḏō·rə·ḵê qe·šeṯ kāl- ’êl·leh gib·bō·w·rê ḥā·yil — WLC · 8

Then Zerah the Cushite came against them with an army of 1,000,000 men… [and] 300… chariots, and they advanced as far as Mareshah.
𐤆𐤓𐤇 𐤄𐤊𐤅𐤔𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤔 𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤃 𐤌𐤓𐤔𐤄
זֶ֣רַח הַכּוּשִׁ֗י וַיֵּצֵ֨א אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם בְּחַ֙יִל֙ אֶ֣לֶף אֲלָפִ֔ים שְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֑וֹת וּמַרְכָּב֖וֹת וַיָּבֹ֖א עַד־ מָרֵשָֽׁה׃ ze·raḥ hak·kū·šî way·yê·ṣê ’ă·lê·hem bə·ḥa·yil ’e·lep̄ ’ă·lā·p̄îm šə·lōš mê·’ō·wṯ ū·mar·kā·ḇō·wṯ way·yā·ḇō ‘aḏ- mā·rê·šāh — WLC · 9

So Asa marched out against him and lined up in battle formation in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.

אָסָ֖א וַיֵּצֵ֥א לְפָנָ֑יו וַיַּֽעַרְכוּ֙ מִלְחָמָ֔ה בְּגֵ֥יא צְפַ֖תָה לְמָרֵשָֽׁה׃ ’ā·sā way·yê·ṣê lə·p̄ā·nāw way·ya·‘ar·ḵū mil·ḥā·māh bə·ḡê ṣə·p̄a·ṯāh lə·mā·rê·šāh — WLC · 10

Then Asa cried out to the LORD his God…: “O LORD, there is no one besides You to help… the powerless… against the mighty. Help us, O LORD our God, for we rely on You, and in Your name we have come against this multitude. O LORD, You are our God. Do not let a mere mortal prevail against You.”

אָסָ֜א וַיִּקְרָ֨א אֶל־ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָיו֮ וַיֹּאמַר֒ יְהוָ֗ה אֵֽין־ עִמְּךָ֤ לַעְזוֹר֙ בֵּ֥ין לְאֵ֣ין כֹּ֔חַ רַב֙ עָזְרֵ֜נוּ יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ כִּֽי־ נִשְׁעַ֔נּוּ עָלֶ֣יךָ וּבְשִׁמְךָ֣ בָ֔אנוּ עַל־ הַזֶּ֑ה הֶהָמ֖וֹן יְהוָ֤ה אַ֔תָּה אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ אַל־ אֱנֽוֹשׁ׃ס יַעְצֹ֥ר עִמְּךָ֖ ’ā·sā way·yiq·rā ’el- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāw way·yō·mar Yah·weh ’ên- ‘im·mə·ḵā la‘·zō·wr bên lə·’ên kō·aḥ raḇ ‘ā·zə·rê·nū Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū kî- niš·‘an·nū ‘ā·le·ḵā ū·ḇə·šim·ḵā ḇā·nū ‘al- haz·zeh he·hā·mō·wn Yah·weh ’at·tāh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū ’al- ’ĕ·nō·wōš ya‘·ṣōr ‘im·mə·ḵā — WLC · 11

So the LORD struck down the Cushites before Asa and Judah, and the Cushites fled.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤐 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤅𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤊𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎𐤅
יְהוָה֙ וַיִּגֹּ֤ף אֶת־ הַכּוּשִׁ֔ים לִפְנֵ֥י אָסָ֖א וְלִפְנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה הַכּוּשִֽׁים׃ וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ Yah·weh way·yig·gōp̄ ’eṯ- hak·kū·šîm lip̄·nê ’ā·sā wə·lip̄·nê yə·hū·ḏāh hak·kū·šîm way·yā·nu·sū — WLC · 12

Then Asa and his army - pursued them as far as Gerar. The Cushites fell and could not… recover, for they were crushed before the LORD… and His army. So the people of Judah carried off a great amount of… plunder

אָסָ֜א וְהָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־ עִמּוֹ֮ וַיִּרְדְּפֵ֨ם עַד־ לִגְרָר֒ מִכּוּשִׁים֙ וַיִּפֹּ֤ל לְאֵ֣ין לָהֶ֣ם מִֽחְיָ֔ה כִּֽי־ נִשְׁבְּר֥וּ לִפְנֵֽי־ יְהוָ֖ה וְלִפְנֵ֣י מַחֲנֵ֑הוּ וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃ שָׁלָ֖ל ’ā·sā wə·hā·‘ām ’ă·šer- ‘im·mōw way·yir·də·p̄êm ‘aḏ- liḡ·rār mik·kū·šîm way·yip·pōl lə·’ên lā·hem miḥ·yāh kî- niš·bə·rū lip̄·nê- Yah·weh wə·lip̄·nê ma·ḥă·nê·hū way·yiś·’ū har·bêh mə·’ōḏ šā·lāl — WLC · 13

and attacked all the cities around Gerar, because the terror of the LORD had fallen upon them. They plundered all the cities, since there was much plunder there.
𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤂𐤓𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤐𐤇𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤆𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤁𐤆𐤄 𐤁𐤄𐤌
וַיַּכּ֗וּ אֵ֤ת כָּל־ הֶֽעָרִים֙ סְבִיב֣וֹת גְּרָ֔ר כִּי־ פַֽחַד־ יְהוָ֖ה הָיָ֥ה עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וַיָּבֹ֙זּוּ֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ הֶ֣עָרִ֔ים כִּֽי־ הָיְתָ֥ה רַבָּ֖ה בִזָּ֥ה בָהֶֽם׃ way·yak·kū ’êṯ kāl- he·‘ā·rîm sə·ḇî·ḇō·wṯ gə·rār kî- p̄a·ḥaḏ- Yah·weh hā·yāh ‘ă·lê·hem way·yā·ḇōz·zū ’eṯ- kāl- he·‘ā·rîm kî- hā·yə·ṯāh rab·bāh ḇiz·zāh ḇā·hem — WLC · 14

They also attacked the tents of the herdsmen and carried off many sheep and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.

וְגַם־ הִכּ֑וּ אָהֳלֵ֥י מִקְנֶ֖ה וַיִּשְׁבּ֨וּ לָרֹב֙ צֹ֤אן וּגְמַלִּ֔ים וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ס wə·ḡam- hik·kū ’ā·ho·lê miq·neh way·yiš·bū lā·rōḇ ṣōn ū·ḡə·mal·lîm way·yā·šu·ḇū yə·rū·šā·lim — WLC · 15
