Chapter 15

The Prophecy of Azariah

1

Now the Spirit of God came upon Azariah son of Oded.

𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤏𐤅𐤃𐤃

ר֥וּחַ אֱלֹהִֽים׃ הָיְתָ֥ה עָלָ֖יו וַעֲזַרְיָ֙הוּ֙ בֶּן־ עוֹדֵ֔ד rū·aḥ ’ĕ·lō·hîm hā·yə·ṯāh ‘ā·lāw wa·‘ă·zar·yā·hū ben- ‘ō·w·ḏêḏWLC · 1

So he went out to meet Asa and said to him, “Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The LORD is with you when you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you, but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.

וַיֵּצֵא֮ לִפְנֵ֣י אָסָא֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ שְׁמָע֕וּנִי אָסָ֖א וְכָל־ יְהוּדָ֣ה וּבִנְיָמִ֑ן יְהוָ֤ה עִמָּכֶם֙ בִּֽהְיֽוֹתְכֶ֣ם עִמּ֔וֹ וְאִֽם־ תִּדְרְשֻׁ֙הוּ֙ יִמָּצֵ֣א לָכֶ֔ם וְאִם־ תַּעַזְבֻ֖הוּ יַעֲזֹ֥ב אֶתְכֶֽם׃ס way·yê·ṣê lip̄·nê ’ā·sā way·yō·mer lōw šə·mā·‘ū·nî ’ā·sā wə·ḵāl yə·hū·ḏāh ū·ḇin·yā·min Yah·weh ‘im·mā·ḵem bih·yō·wṯ·ḵem ‘im·mōw wə·’im- tiḏ·rə·šu·hū yim·mā·ṣê lā·ḵem wə·’im- ta·‘az·ḇu·hū ya·‘ă·zōḇ ’eṯ·ḵemWLC · 2

For many years Israel has been without the true God, without a priest to instruct them, and without the law.

𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤌𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤌𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤄

רַבִּ֖ים וְיָמִ֥ים לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לְלֹ֣א׀ אֱמֶ֗ת אֱלֹהֵ֣י וּלְלֹ֛א כֹּהֵ֥ן מוֹרֶ֖ה וּלְלֹ֥א תוֹרָֽה׃ rab·bîm wə·yā·mîm lə·yiś·rā·’êl lə·lō ’ĕ·meṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê ū·lə·lō kō·hên mō·w·reh ū·lə·lō ṯō·w·rāhWLC · 3

But in their distress… they turned to the LORD, the God of Israel, and sought Him, and He was found by them.

𐤁𐤑𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤒𐤔𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤋𐤄𐤌

בַּצַּר־ ל֔וֹ וַיָּ֙שָׁב֙ עַל־ יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיְבַקְשֻׁ֖הוּ וַיִּמָּצֵ֥א לָהֶֽם׃ baṣ·ṣar- lōw way·yā·šāḇ ‘al- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl way·ḇaq·šu·hū way·yim·mā·ṣê lā·hemWLC · 4

In those days there was no safety for travelers…, because the residents of the lands had… many conflicts.

𐤄𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤄𐤅𐤌𐤕

הָהֵ֔ם וּבָעִתִּ֣ים אֵ֥ין שָׁל֖וֹם לַיּוֹצֵ֣א וְלַבָּ֑א כִּ֚י יוֹשְׁבֵ֖י הָאֲרָצֽוֹת׃ עַ֥ל כָּל־ רַבּ֔וֹת מְהוּמֹ֣ת hā·hêm ū·ḇā·‘it·tîm ’ên šā·lō·wm lay·yō·w·ṣê wə·lab·bā kî yō·wō·šə·ḇê hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ ‘al kāl- rab·bō·wṯ mə·hū·mōṯWLC · 5

Nation was crushed by nation, and city by city, for God afflicted them with all kinds of adversity.

𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤅𐤊𐤕𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤌𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤑𐤓𐤄

גוֹי־ וְכֻתְּת֥וּ בְּג֖וֹי וְעִ֣יר בְּעִ֑יר כִּֽי־ אֱלֹהִ֥ים הֲמָמָ֖ם בְּכָל־ צָרָֽה׃ ḡō·w- wə·ḵut·tə·ṯū bə·ḡō·w wə·‘îr bə·‘îr kî- ’ĕ·lō·hîm hă·mā·mām bə·ḵāl ṣā·rāhWLC · 6

But as for you, be strong; do not be discouraged…, for your work will be rewarded.”

וְאַתֶּ֣ם חִזְק֔וּ וְאַל־ יִרְפּ֖וּ יְדֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֛י לִפְעֻלַּתְכֶֽם׃ס יֵ֥שׁ שָׂכָ֖ר wə·’at·tem ḥiz·qū wə·’al- yir·pū yə·ḏê·ḵem kî lip̄·‘ul·laṯ·ḵem yêš śā·ḵārWLC · 7

Asa’s Reforms

When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of [Azariah son of] Oded the prophet, he took courage and removed the detestable idols from the whole land of Judah and Benjamin and from the cities he had captured in the hill country of Ephraim. He then restored the altar of the LORD that was in front of the portico of the LORD’s {temple}.

אָסָ֜א וְכִשְׁמֹ֨עַ הָאֵ֗לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֣ים וְהַנְּבוּאָה֮ עֹדֵ֣ד הַנָּבִיא֒ הִתְחַזַּ֗ק וַיַּעֲבֵ֤ר הַשִּׁקּוּצִים֙ וּמִן־ מִכָּל־ אֶ֤רֶץ יְהוּדָה֙ וּבִנְיָמִ֔ן הֶ֣עָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר לָכַ֖ד מֵהַ֣ר אֶפְרָ֑יִם וַיְחַדֵּשׁ֙ אֶת־ מִזְבַּ֣ח יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֕ר לִפְנֵ֖י אוּלָ֥ם יְהוָֽה׃ ’ā·sā wə·ḵiš·mō·a‘ hā·’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm wə·han·nə·ḇū·’āh ‘ō·ḏêḏ han·nā·ḇî hiṯ·ḥaz·zaq way·ya·‘ă·ḇêr haš·šiq·qū·ṣîm ū·min- mik·kāl ’e·reṣ yə·hū·ḏāh ū·ḇin·yā·min he·‘ā·rîm ’ă·šer lā·ḵaḏ mê·har ’ep̄·rā·yim way·ḥad·dêš ’eṯ- miz·baḥ Yah·weh ’ă·šer lip̄·nê ’ū·lām Yah·wehWLC · 8

And he assembled all Judah and Benjamin, along with those from the tribes of Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simeon who had settled among them, for great numbers had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the LORD his God was with him.

𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤁𐤑 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌𐤍 𐤌𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤍𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤂𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤓𐤁 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤐

וַיִּקְבֹּ֗ץ אֶת־ כָּל־ יְהוּדָה֙ וּבִנְיָמִ֔ן מֵאֶפְרַ֥יִם וּמְנַשֶּׁ֖ה וּמִשִּׁמְע֑וֹן וְהַגָּרִים֙ עִמָּהֶ֔ם כִּֽי־ לָרֹ֔ב נָפְל֨וּ עָלָ֤יו מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל֙ בִּרְאֹתָ֕ם כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָ֖יו עִמּֽוֹ׃פ way·yiq·bōṣ ’eṯ- kāl- yə·hū·ḏāh ū·ḇin·yā·min mê·’ep̄·ra·yim ū·mə·naš·šeh ū·miš·šim·‘ō·wn wə·hag·gā·rîm ‘im·mā·hem kî- lā·rōḇ nā·p̄ə·lū ‘ā·lāw mî·yiś·rā·’êl bir·’ō·ṯām kî- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāw ‘im·mōwWLC · 9

So they gathered together in Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth… year of Asa’s reign.

𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤁𐤑𐤅 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤇𐤌𐤔 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕

וַיִּקָּבְצ֥וּ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ חֲמֵשׁ־ עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה לִשְׁנַ֥ת אָסָֽא׃ לְמַלְכ֥וּת way·yiq·qā·ḇə·ṣū yə·rū·šā·lim haš·šə·lî·šî ba·ḥō·ḏeš ḥă·mêš- ‘eś·rêh liš·naṯ ’ā·sā lə·mal·ḵūṯWLC · 10

At that time they sacrificed to the LORD seven hundred oxen and seven thousand sheep from all the plunder they had brought back.

𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤅 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤅

הַה֔וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם וַיִּזְבְּח֤וּ לַיהוָה֙ שְׁבַ֣ע מֵא֔וֹת בָּקָר֙ שִׁבְעַ֥ת אֲלָפִֽים׃ וְצֹ֖אן מִן־ הַשָּׁלָ֖ל הֵבִ֑יאוּ ha·hū bay·yō·wm way·yiz·bə·ḥū Yah·weh šə·ḇa‘ mê·’ō·wṯ bā·qār šiḇ·‘aṯ ’ă·lā·p̄îm wə·ṣōn min- haš·šā·lāl hê·ḇî·’ūWLC · 11

Then they entered into a covenant to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul.

𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤃𐤓𐤅𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤌

וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ בַבְּרִ֔ית לִדְר֕וֹשׁ אֶת־ יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם בְּכָל־ לְבָבָ֖ם וּבְכָל־ נַפְשָֽׁם׃ way·yā·ḇō·’ū ḇab·bə·rîṯ liḏ·rō·wōš ’eṯ- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·hem bə·ḵāl lə·ḇā·ḇām ū·ḇə·ḵāl nap̄·šāmWLC · 12

And whoever would not seek the LORD, the God of Israel, would be put to death, whether young or old, man or woman.

𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤓𐤔 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤍 𐤒𐤈𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤋𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤔𐤄

וְכֹ֨ל אֲשֶׁ֧ר לֹֽא־ יִדְרֹ֛שׁ לַיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יוּמָ֑ת לְמִן־ קָטֹן֙ וְעַד־ גָּד֔וֹל לְמֵאִ֖ישׁ וְעַד־ אִשָּֽׁה׃ wə·ḵōl ’ă·šer lō- yiḏ·rōš Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê- yiś·rā·’êl yū·māṯ lə·min- qā·ṭōn wə·‘aḏ- gā·ḏō·wl lə·mê·’îš wə·‘aḏ- ’iš·šāhWLC · 13

They took an oath to the LORD with a loud voice, with shouting, trumpets, and rams’ horns.

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤅 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤕𐤓𐤅𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤇𐤑𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤅𐤕

וַיִּשָּֽׁבְעוּ֙ לַיהוָ֔ה גָּד֖וֹל בְּק֥וֹל וּבִתְרוּעָ֑ה וּבַחֲצֹצְר֖וֹת וּבְשׁוֹפָרֽוֹת׃ way·yiš·šā·ḇə·‘ū Yah·weh gā·ḏō·wl bə·qō·wl ū·ḇiṯ·rū·‘āh ū·ḇa·ḥă·ṣō·ṣə·rō·wṯ ū·ḇə·šō·w·p̄ā·rō·wṯWLC · 14

And all Judah rejoiced over the oath, for they had sworn it with all their heart. They had sought Him earnestly…, and He was found by them. So the LORD gave them rest on every side.

𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤅𐤏𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤅 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤌 𐤁𐤒𐤔𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤍𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤇 𐤌𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁

כָל־ יְהוּדָ֜ה וַיִּשְׂמְח֨וּ עַל־ הַשְּׁבוּעָ֗ה כִּ֤י נִשְׁבָּ֔עוּ בְכָל־ לְבָבָם֙ בִּקְשֻׁ֔הוּ וּבְכָל־ רְצוֹנָ֣ם וַיִּמָּצֵ֖א לָהֶ֑ם יְהוָ֛ה לָהֶ֖ם וַיָּ֧נַח מִסָּבִֽיב׃ ḵāl yə·hū·ḏāh way·yiś·mə·ḥū ‘al- haš·šə·ḇū·‘āh kî niš·bā·‘ū ḇə·ḵāl- lə·ḇā·ḇām biq·šu·hū ū·ḇə·ḵāl rə·ṣō·w·nām way·yim·mā·ṣê lā·hem Yah·weh lā·hem way·yā·naḥ mis·sā·ḇîḇWLC · 15

King Asa also removed his grandmother Maacah from [her position as] queen mother because she had made a detestable Asherah pole. Asa chopped down the pole, crushed it, and burned it in the Kidron Valley.

𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤄𐤎𐤉𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤊𐤄 𐤌𐤂𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤐𐤋𐤑𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤓𐤕 𐤌𐤐𐤋𐤑𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤒 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤐 𐤒𐤃𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤇𐤋

הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ אָסָ֣א וְגַֽם־ הֱסִירָהּ֙ אֵ֣ם׀ מַעֲכָ֞ה מִגְּבִירָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ עָשְׂתָ֥ה מִפְלָ֑צֶת לַאֲשֵׁרָ֖ה אָסָא֙ אֶת־ וַיִּכְרֹ֤ת מִפְלַצְתָּ֔הּ וַיָּ֕דֶק וַיִּשְׂרֹ֖ף קִדְרֽוֹן׃ בְּנַ֥חַל ham·me·leḵ ’ā·sā wə·ḡam- hĕ·sî·rāh ’êm ma·‘ă·ḵāh mig·gə·ḇî·rāh ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śə·ṯāh mip̄·lā·ṣeṯ la·’ă·šê·rāh ’ā·sā ’eṯ- way·yiḵ·rōṯ mip̄·laṣ·tāh way·yā·ḏeq way·yiś·rōp̄ qiḏ·rō·wn bə·na·ḥalWLC · 16

The high places were not removed from Israel, but Asa’s heart was fully devoted all his days.

𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤎𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤓𐤒 𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤅

וְהַ֨בָּמ֔וֹת לֹא־ סָ֖רוּ מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל רַ֧ק אָסָ֛א לְבַב־ הָיָ֥ה שָׁלֵ֖ם כָּל־ יָמָֽיו׃ wə·hab·bā·mō·wṯ lō- sā·rū mî·yiś·rā·’êl raq ’ā·sā lə·ḇaḇ- hā·yāh šā·lêm kāl- yā·māwWLC · 17

And he brought into the house of God the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated.
