Chapter 19

Jehoshaphat Reproved by Jehu

1

When Jehoshaphat king of Judah had returned safely to his home in Jerusalem,

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌

יְהוֹשָׁפָ֨ט מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְהוּדָ֧ה וַ֠יָּשָׁב בְּשָׁל֖וֹם אֶל־ בֵּית֛וֹ לִֽירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ yə·hō·wō·šā·p̄āṭ me·leḵ- yə·hū·ḏāh way·yā·šāḇ bə·šā·lō·wm ’el- bê·ṯōw lî·rū·šā·limWLC · 1

Jehu son of Hanani the seer went out to confront him and said to King Jehoshaphat, “Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the LORD? Because of this, the wrath of the LORD [is] vvv upon you.

יֵה֣וּא בֶן־ חֲנָ֘נִי֮ הַחֹזֶה֒ וַיֵּצֵ֣א אֶל־ פָּנָ֗יו וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ יְהוֹשָׁפָ֔ט לַעְזֹ֔ר הֲלָרָשָׁ֣ע תֶּאֱהָ֑ב וּלְשֹׂנְאֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה וּבָזֹאת֙ קֶּ֔צֶף יְהוָֽה׃ מִלִּפְנֵ֖י עָלֶ֣יךָ yê·hū ḇen- ḥă·nā·nî ha·ḥō·zeh way·yê·ṣê ’el- pā·nāw way·yō·mer ’el- ham·me·leḵ yə·hō·wō·šā·p̄āṭ la‘·zōr hă·lā·rā·šā‘ te·’ĕ·hāḇ ū·lə·śō·nə·’ê Yah·weh ū·ḇā·zōṯ qe·ṣep̄ Yah·weh mil·lip̄·nê ‘ā·le·ḵāWLC · 2

However, some good is found in you, for you have removed the Asherah poles from the land and have set your heart on seeking God.”

אֲבָ֕ל דְּבָרִ֥ים טוֹבִ֖ים נִמְצְא֣וּ עִמָּ֑ךְ כִּֽי־ בִעַ֤רְתָּ הָאֲשֵׁרוֹת֙ מִן־ הָאָ֔רֶץ וַהֲכִינ֥וֹתָ לְבָבְךָ֖ לִדְרֹ֥שׁ הָֽאֱלֹהִֽים׃ ’ă·ḇāl də·ḇā·rîm ṭō·w·ḇîm nim·ṣə·’ū ‘im·māḵ kî- ḇi·‘ar·tā hā·’ă·šê·rō·wṯ min- hā·’ā·reṣ wa·hă·ḵî·nō·w·ṯā lə·ḇā·ḇə·ḵā liḏ·rōš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîmWLC · 3

Jehoshaphat’s Reforms

Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, and once again he went out among the people vvv from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim and turned them back to the LORD, the God of their fathers.

יְהוֹשָׁפָ֖ט וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑םס וַיָּ֜שָׁב וַיֵּצֵ֣א בָעָ֗ם מִבְּאֵ֥ר שֶׁ֙בַע֙ עַד־ הַ֣ר אֶפְרַ֔יִם וַיְשִׁיבֵ֕ם אֶל־ יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י אֲבוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ yə·hō·wō·šā·p̄āṭ way·yê·šeḇ bī·rū·šå̄·lå̄·ms way·yā·šāḇ way·yê·ṣê ḇā·‘ām mib·bə·’êr še·ḇa‘ ‘aḏ- har ’ep̄·ra·yim way·šî·ḇêm ’el- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·hemWLC · 4

He appointed judges in the land, in each of the fortified cities of Judah.

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤁𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄

וַיַּעֲמֵ֨ד שֹֽׁפְטִ֜ים בָּאָ֗רֶץ בְּכָל־ לְעִ֥יר וָעִֽיר׃ הַבְּצֻר֖וֹת עָרֵ֧י יְהוּדָ֛ה way·ya·‘ă·mêḏ šō·p̄ə·ṭîm bā·’ā·reṣ bə·ḵāl lə·‘îr wā·‘îr hab·bə·ṣu·rō·wṯ ‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāhWLC · 5

Then he said to the judges, “Consider carefully what you do, for you are not judging for man, but for the LORD, who is with you vvv when you render judgment.

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־ הַשֹּֽׁפְטִ֗ים רְאוּ֙ מָֽה־ אַתֶּ֣ם עֹשִׂ֔ים כִּ֣י לֹ֧א תִּשְׁפְּט֖וּ לְאָדָ֛ם כִּ֣י לַיהוָ֑ה וְעִמָּכֶ֖ם בִּדְבַ֥ר מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ way·yō·mer ’el- haš·šō·p̄ə·ṭîm rə·’ū māh- ’at·tem ‘ō·śîm kî lō tiš·pə·ṭū lə·’ā·ḏām kî Yah·weh wə·‘im·mā·ḵem biḏ·ḇar miš·pāṭWLC · 6

And now, may the fear of the LORD be upon you. Be careful what you do, for with the LORD our God there is no injustice or partiality… or bribery…”

𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤐𐤇𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤒𐤇 𐤔𐤇𐤃

וְעַתָּ֕ה פַֽחַד־ יְהוָ֖ה יְהִ֥י עֲלֵיכֶ֑ם שִׁמְר֣וּ וַעֲשׂ֔וּ כִּֽי־ עִם־ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ אֵ֞ין עַוְלָ֛ה וּמַשֹּׂ֥א פָנִ֖ים וּמִקַּח־ שֹֽׁחַד׃ wə·‘at·tāh p̄a·ḥaḏ- Yah·weh yə·hî ‘ă·lê·ḵem šim·rū wa·‘ă·śū kî- ‘im- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū ’ên ‘aw·lāh ū·maś·śō p̄ā·nîm ū·miq·qaḥ- šō·ḥaḏWLC · 7

Moreover, Jehoshaphat appointed in Jerusalem some of the Levites, priests, and heads of the Israelite families to judge on behalf of the LORD and to settle disputes. And they lived in Jerusalem.

𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉 𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌

וְגַ֣ם יְהוֹשָׁפָ֜ט הֶעֱמִ֨יד בִּ֠ירוּשָׁלִַם מִן־ הַלְוִיִּ֣ם וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים וּמֵרָאשֵׁ֤י לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הָאָבוֹת֙ לְמִשְׁפַּ֥ט יְהוָ֖ה וְלָרִ֑יב וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ wə·ḡam yə·hō·wō·šā·p̄āṭ he·‘ĕ·mîḏ bî·rū·šā·lim min- hal·wî·yim wə·hak·kō·hă·nîm ū·mê·rā·šê lə·yiś·rā·’êl hā·’ā·ḇō·wṯ lə·miš·paṭ Yah·weh wə·lā·rîḇ way·yā·šu·ḇū yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 8

He commanded them,… saying,… “You must serve faithfully and wholeheartedly… in the fear of the LORD.

𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤄 𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

וַיְצַ֥ו עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר כֹּ֤ה תַעֲשׂוּן֙ בֶּאֱמוּנָ֖ה שָׁלֵֽם׃ וּבְלֵבָ֥ב בְּיִרְאַ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה way·ṣaw ‘ă·lê·hem lê·mōr kōh ṯa·‘ă·śūn be·’ĕ·mū·nāh šā·lêm ū·ḇə·lê·ḇāḇ bə·yir·’aṯ Yah·wehWLC · 9

For every dispute that comes before you from your brothers who dwell in their cities— whether [it regards] bloodshed or some other violation of law, commandments, statutes, or ordinances— you are to warn them, so that they will not incur guilt before the LORD and wrath will not come upon you and your brothers. Do this, and you will not incur guilt.

וְכָל־ רִיב֩ אֲשֶׁר־ יָב֨וֹא עֲלֵיכֶ֜ם מֵאֲחֵיכֶ֣ם׀ הַיֹּשְׁבִ֣ים בְּעָרֵיהֶ֗ם בֵּֽין־ דָּ֣ם׀ לְדָם֮ בֵּין־ תּוֹרָ֣ה לְמִצְוָה֮ לְחֻקִּ֣ים וּלְמִשְׁפָּטִים֒ וְהִזְהַרְתֶּ֣ם אֹתָ֔ם וְלֹ֤א יֶאְשְׁמוּ֙ לַיהוָ֔ה קֶ֥צֶף וְהָֽיָה־ עֲלֵיכֶ֖ם וְעַל־ אֲחֵיכֶ֑ם תַעֲשׂ֖וּן כֹּ֥ה וְלֹ֥א תֶאְשָֽׁמוּ׃ wə·ḵāl rîḇ ’ă·šer- yā·ḇō·w ‘ă·lê·ḵem mê·’ă·ḥê·ḵem hay·yō·šə·ḇîm bə·‘ā·rê·hem bên- dām lə·ḏām bên- tō·w·rāh lə·miṣ·wāh lə·ḥuq·qîm ū·lə·miš·pā·ṭîm wə·hiz·har·tem ’ō·ṯām wə·lō ye’·šə·mū Yah·weh qe·ṣep̄ wə·hā·yāh- ‘ă·lê·ḵem wə·‘al- ’ă·ḥê·ḵem ṯa·‘ă·śūn kōh wə·lō ṯe’·šā·mūWLC · 10

Note that Amariah, the chief priest, will be over you in all that pertains to the LORD, and Zebadiah son of Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, in all that pertains to the king. And the Levites [will serve as] officers before you. Act resolutely; may the LORD be with the upright!”

וְהִנֵּ֡ה אֲמַרְיָ֣הוּ הָרֹ֨אשׁ כֹהֵן֩ עֲלֵיכֶ֜ם לְכֹ֣ל דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֗ה וּזְבַדְיָ֨הוּ בֶן־ יִשְׁמָעֵ֜אל הַנָּגִ֤יד לְבֵית־ יְהוּדָה֙ לְכֹ֣ל דְּבַר־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ הַלְוִיִּ֖ם וְשֹׁטְרִ֥ים לִפְנֵיכֶ֑ם וַעֲשׂ֔וּ חִזְק֣וּ יְהוָ֖ה וִיהִ֥י עִם־ הַטּֽוֹב׃פ wə·hin·nêh ’ă·mar·yā·hū hā·rōš ḵō·hên ‘ă·lê·ḵem lə·ḵōl də·ḇar- Yah·weh ū·zə·ḇaḏ·yā·hū ḇen- yiš·mā·‘êl han·nā·ḡîḏ lə·ḇêṯ- yə·hū·ḏāh lə·ḵōl də·ḇar- ham·me·leḵ hal·wî·yim wə·šō·ṭə·rîm lip̄·nê·ḵem wa·‘ă·śū ḥiz·qū Yah·weh wî·hî ‘im- haṭ·ṭō·wḇWLC · 11
