Chapter 24

Joash Repairs the Temple

1

Joash was seven years old… when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years. His mother’s name was Zibiah; vvv she was from Beersheba.

יֹאָ֣שׁ שֶׁ֤בַע בֶּן־ שָׁנִים֙ בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ מָלַ֖ךְ בִּֽירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְאַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה אִמּ֔וֹ וְשֵׁ֣ם צִבְיָ֖ה מִבְּאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃ yō·’āš še·ḇa‘ ben- šā·nîm bə·mā·lə·ḵōw mā·laḵ bî·rū·šā·lim wə·’ar·bā·‘îm šā·nāh ’im·mōw wə·šêm ṣiḇ·yāh mib·bə·’êr šā·ḇa‘WLC · 1

And Joash did [what was] right in the eyes of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

יוֹאָ֛שׁ וַיַּ֧עַשׂ הַיָּשָׁ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כָּל־ יְמֵ֖י יְהוֹיָדָ֥ע הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ yō·w·’āš way·ya·‘aś hay·yā·šār bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh kāl- yə·mê yə·hō·w·yā·ḏā‘ hak·kō·hênWLC · 2

Jehoiada took for him two wives, and he had sons and daughters.

יְהוֹיָדָ֖ע וַיִּשָּׂא־ ל֥וֹ שְׁתָּ֑יִם נָשִׁ֣ים וַיּ֖וֹלֶד בָּנִ֥ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ yə·hō·w·yā·ḏā‘ way·yiś·śā- lōw šə·tā·yim nā·šîm way·yō·w·leḏ bā·nîm ū·ḇā·nō·wṯWLC · 3

Some time later…, Joash set his heart on repairing the house of the LORD.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤊𐤍 𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤁 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

וַיְהִ֖י אַחֲרֵיכֵ֑ן יוֹאָ֔שׁ הָיָה֙ עִם־ לֵ֣ב לְחַדֵּ֖שׁ אֶת־ בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ way·hî ’a·ḥă·rê·ḵên yō·w·’āš hā·yāh ‘im- lêḇ lə·ḥad·dêš ’eṯ- bêṯ Yah·wehWLC · 4

So he gathered the priests and Levites and said “Go out to the cities of Judah and collect the money due annually… from all Israel, to repair the house of your God… Do it quickly.” The Levites, however, did not make haste.

וַיִּקְבֹּץ֮ אֶת־ הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים וְהַלְוִיִּם֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֡ם צְא֣וּ לְעָרֵ֪י יְהוּדָ֟ה וְקִבְצוּ֩ כֶּ֜סֶף מִדֵּ֤י שָׁנָה֙ בְּשָׁנָ֔ה מִכָּל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל לְחַזֵּ֣ק׀ אֶת־ בֵּ֣ית אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֗ם וְאַתֶּ֖ם לַדָּבָ֑ר תְּמַהֲר֣וּ הַֽלְוִיִּֽם׃ וְלֹ֥א מִֽהֲר֖וּ way·yiq·bōṣ ’eṯ- hak·kō·hă·nîm wə·hal·wî·yim way·yō·mer lā·hem ṣə·’ū lə·‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh wə·qiḇ·ṣū ke·sep̄ mid·dê šā·nāh bə·šā·nāh mik·kāl yiś·rā·’êl lə·ḥaz·zêq ’eṯ- bêṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem wə·’at·tem lad·dā·ḇār tə·ma·hă·rū hal·wî·yim wə·lō mi·hă·rūWLC · 5

So the king called Jehoiada the high priest and said “Why have you not required… the Levites to bring from Judah and Jerusalem the tax imposed by Moses the servant of the LORD and by the assembly of Israel for the Tent of the Testimony?”

הַמֶּלֶךְ֮ וַיִּקְרָ֣א לִֽיהוֹיָדָ֣ע הָרֹאשׁ֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ מַדּ֙וּעַ֙ לֹֽא־ דָרַ֣שְׁתָּ עַל־ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם לְהָבִ֞יא מִֽיהוּדָ֣ה וּמִֽירוּשָׁלִַ֗ם אֶת־ מַשְׂאַת֙ מֹשֶׁ֣ה עֶֽבֶד־ יְהוָ֔ה וְהַקָּהָ֖ל לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לְאֹ֖הֶל הָעֵדֽוּת׃ ham·me·leḵ way·yiq·rā lî·hō·w·yā·ḏā‘ hā·rōš way·yō·mer lōw mad·dū·a‘ lō- ḏā·raš·tā ‘al- hal·wî·yim lə·hā·ḇî mî·hū·ḏāh ū·mî·rū·šā·lim ’eṯ- maś·’aṯ mō·šeh ‘e·ḇeḏ- Yah·weh wə·haq·qā·hāl lə·yiś·rā·’êl lə·’ō·hel hā·‘ê·ḏūṯWLC · 6

For the sons of that wicked woman Athaliah had broken into the house of God and had even… used the sacred objects of the house of the LORD for the Baals.

𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤕 𐤏𐤕𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤐𐤓𐤑𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤌

כִּ֤י בָּנֶ֥יהָ הַמִּרְשַׁ֔עַת עֲתַלְיָ֙הוּ֙ פָרְצ֖וּ אֶת־ בֵּ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְגַם֙ כָּל־ עָשׂ֖וּ קָדְשֵׁ֣י בֵית־ יְהוָ֔ה לַבְּעָלִֽים׃ kî bā·ne·hā ham·mir·ša·‘aṯ ‘ă·ṯal·yā·hū p̄ā·rə·ṣū ’eṯ- bêṯ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm wə·ḡam kāl- ‘ā·śū qā·ḏə·šê ḇêṯ- Yah·weh lab·bə·‘ā·lîmWLC · 7

At the king’s command a chest was made and placed outside, at the gate of the house of the LORD.

𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤄𐤅 𐤇𐤅𐤑𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶחָ֑ד אֲר֣וֹן וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֖וּ וַֽיִּתְּנֻ֛הוּ חֽוּצָה׃ בְּשַׁ֥עַר בֵּית־ יְהוָ֖ה ham·me·leḵ way·yō·mer ’e·ḥāḏ ’ă·rō·wn way·ya·‘ă·śū way·yit·tə·nu·hū ḥū·ṣāh bə·ša·‘ar bêṯ- Yah·wehWLC · 8

And a proclamation was issued in Judah and Jerusalem that they were to bring to the LORD the tax [imposed by] Moses the servant of God on Israel in the wilderness.

𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓

ק֞וֹל וַיִּתְּנוּ־ בִּֽיהוּדָ֣ה וּבִֽירוּשָׁלִַ֗ם לְהָבִ֤יא לַֽיהוָה֙ מַשְׂאַ֞ת מֹשֶׁ֧ה עֶֽבֶד־ הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ qō·wl way·yit·tə·nū- bî·hū·ḏāh ū·ḇî·rū·šā·lim lə·hā·ḇî Yah·weh maś·’aṯ mō·šeh ‘e·ḇeḏ- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl bam·miḏ·bārWLC · 9

All the officers and all the people rejoiced and brought their contributions, and they dropped them in the chest until it was full.

𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤃 𐤋𐤊𐤋𐤄

כָל־ הַשָּׂרִ֖ים וְכָל־ הָעָ֑ם וַיִּשְׂמְח֥וּ וַיָּבִ֛יאוּ וַיַּשְׁלִ֥יכוּ לָאָר֖וֹן עַד־ לְכַלֵּֽה׃ ḵāl haś·śā·rîm wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām way·yiś·mə·ḥū way·yā·ḇî·’ū way·yaš·lî·ḵū lā·’ā·rō·wn ‘aḏ- lə·ḵal·lêhWLC · 10

  • Whenever the chest was brought by the Levites to the king’s overseers and they saw that there was a large amount of money, the royal scribe and the officer of the high priest would come and empty the chest and carry it back to its place. They did this daily… and gathered the money in abundance.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤐𐤒𐤃𐤕 𐤅𐤊𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤎𐤅𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤐𐤒𐤉𐤃 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤊𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤋𐤓𐤁

וַיְהִ֡י בְּעֵת֩ הָֽאָר֜וֹן יָבִ֨יא אֶת־ בְּיַ֣ד הַלְוִיִּם֒ אֶל־ הַמֶּלֶךְ֮ פְּקֻדַּ֣ת וְכִרְאוֹתָ֞ם כִּי־ רַ֣ב הַכֶּ֗סֶף הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ סוֹפֵ֤ר וּפְקִיד֙ הָרֹ֔אשׁ כֹּהֵ֣ן וּבָ֨א וִיעָ֙רוּ֙ אֶת־ הָ֣אָר֔וֹן וְיִשָּׂאֻ֖הוּ וִֽישִׁיבֻ֣הוּ אֶל־ מְקֹמ֑וֹ עָשׂוּ֙ כֹּ֤ה לְי֣וֹם׀ בְּי֔וֹם וַיַּֽאַסְפוּ־ כֶ֖סֶף לָרֹֽב׃ way·hî bə·‘êṯ hā·’ā·rō·wn yā·ḇî ’eṯ- bə·yaḏ hal·wî·yim ’el- ham·me·leḵ pə·qud·daṯ wə·ḵir·’ō·w·ṯām kî- raḇ hak·ke·sep̄ ham·me·leḵ sō·w·p̄êr ū·p̄ə·qîḏ hā·rōš kō·hên ū·ḇā wî·‘ā·rū ’eṯ- hā·’ā·rō·wn wə·yiś·śā·’u·hū wî·šî·ḇu·hū ’el- mə·qō·mōw ‘ā·śū kōh lə·yō·wm bə·yō·wm way·ya·’as·p̄ū- ḵe·sep̄ lā·rōḇWLC · 11

Then the king and Jehoiada would give [the money] to those who supervised… the labor on the house of the LORD… to hire stonecutters and carpenters to restore the house of the LORD, as well as workers in iron and bronze to repair the house of the LORD.

𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤕 𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤑𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤓𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤆𐤋 𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤔𐤕 𐤋𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ וִֽיהוֹיָדָ֗ע וַיִּתְּנֵ֨הוּ אֶל־ עוֹשֵׂה֙ מְלֶ֙אכֶת֙ עֲבוֹדַ֣ת בֵּית־ יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּֽהְי֤וּ שֹׂכְרִים֙ חֹצְבִ֣ים וְחָרָשִׁ֔ים לְחַדֵּ֖שׁ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה וְ֠גַם לְחָרָשֵׁ֤י בַרְזֶל֙ וּנְחֹ֔שֶׁת לְחַזֵּ֖ק אֶת־ בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ ham·me·leḵ wî·hō·w·yā·ḏā‘ way·yit·tə·nê·hū ’el- ‘ō·w·śêh mə·le·ḵeṯ ‘ă·ḇō·w·ḏaṯ bêṯ- Yah·weh way·yih·yū śō·ḵə·rîm ḥō·ṣə·ḇîm wə·ḥā·rā·šîm lə·ḥad·dêš bêṯ Yah·weh wə·ḡam lə·ḥā·rā·šê ḇar·zel ū·nə·ḥō·šeṯ lə·ḥaz·zêq ’eṯ- bêṯ Yah·wehWLC · 12

So the workmen… labored, and in their hands the repair work progressed. They restored the house of God according to its specifications, and they reinforced it.

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤊𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤕𐤊𐤍𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤑𐤄𐤅

וַֽיַּעֲשׂוּ֙ הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה עֹשֵׂ֣י בְּיָדָ֑ם אֲרוּכָ֛ה לַמְּלָאכָ֖ה וַתַּ֧עַל וַֽיַּעֲמִ֜ידוּ אֶת־ בֵּ֧ית הָֽאֱלֹהִ֛ים עַל־ מַתְכֻּנְתּ֖וֹ וַֽיְאַמְּצֻֽהוּ׃ way·ya·‘ă·śū ham·mə·lā·ḵāh ‘ō·śê bə·yā·ḏām ’ă·rū·ḵāh lam·mə·lā·ḵāh wat·ta·‘al way·ya·‘ă·mî·ḏū ’eṯ- bêṯ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘al- maṯ·kun·tōw way·’am·mə·ṣu·hūWLC · 13

When they were finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and Jehoiada, and with it were made articles for the house of the LORD— utensils for the service and for the burnt offerings, dishes, and other objects of gold and silver. Throughout the days of Jehoiada, burnt offerings were presented regularly in the house of the LORD.

When Jehoiada was old and full of years, [he] died at the age of 130… -.

And [Jehoiada] was buried with the kings in the City of David, because he had done what was good in Israel for God and His temple.

After the death of Jehoiada, however, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and [he] listened to them.

They abandoned the house of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherah poles and idols. So wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs.

Nevertheless, [the LORD] sent prophets to bring [the people] back to [Him] and to testify against them, but they would not listen.

Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood up before the people and said to them, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you transgress the commandments of the LORD so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, He has forsaken you.’”

But they conspired against Zechariah, and by order of the king, they stoned him… in the courtyard of the house of the LORD.

Thus King Joash failed to remember the kindness that Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had extended to him. Instead, [Joash] killed [Jehoiada’s] son. As he lay dying, [Zechariah] said, “May the LORD see this and call you to account.”

The Death of Joash

  • In the spring…, the army of Aram went to war against Joash… They entered… Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the leaders of the people -, and they sent all the plunder to their king in Damascus.

Although the Aramean army had come with only a few men, the LORD delivered into their hand a very great army. Because Judah had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers, judgment was executed on Joash.

And when [the Arameans] had withdrawn… they left [Joash] severely wounded. His own servants conspired against him for shedding the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed. So he died and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.

Those who conspired against [Joash] were Zabad son of Shimeath the Ammonitess and Jehozabad son of Shimrith the Moabitess.

The accounts of the sons [of Joash] and the many pronouncements about him, and of the restoration of the house of God, [are] indeed written in the Treatise of the Book of the Kings. And his son Amaziah reigned in his place.
