Chapter 26

Uzziah Reigns in Judah

1

All the people of Judah took Uzziah, who [was] sixteen… years old…, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah.

𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤏𐤆𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤔𐤔 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤌𐤑𐤉𐤄𐤅

[Uzziah was the one] who rebuilt Eloth and restored it to Judah after King [Amaziah] rested with his fathers.

ה֚וּא בָּנָ֣ה אֶת־ אֵיל֔וֹת וַיְשִׁיבֶ֖הָ לִֽיהוּדָ֑ה אַחֲרֵ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ שְׁכַֽב־ עִם־ אֲבֹתָֽיו׃פ hū bā·nāh ’eṯ- ’ê·lō·wṯ way·šî·ḇe·hā lî·hū·ḏāh ’a·ḥă·rê ham·me·leḵ šə·ḵaḇ- ‘im- ’ă·ḇō·ṯāwWLC · 2

Uzziah was sixteen… years old… when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two… years. His mother’s name was Jecoliah; [she was] from Jerusalem.

עֻזִּיָּ֣הוּ שֵׁ֨שׁ עֶשְׂרֵ֤ה בֶּן־ שָׁנָה֙ בְמָלְכ֔וֹ מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וַחֲמִשִּׁ֤ים וּשְׁתַּ֙יִם֙ שָׁנָ֔ה אִמּ֔וֹ וְשֵׁ֣ם יְכִילְיָה מִן־ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ ‘uz·zî·yā·hū šêš ‘eś·rêh ben- šā·nāh ḇə·mā·lə·ḵōw mā·laḵ bî·rū·šā·lim wa·ḥă·miš·šîm ū·šə·ta·yim šā·nāh ’im·mōw wə·šêm yə·ḵī·lə·yå̄h min- yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 3

And he did [what was] right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Amaziah had done.

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ הַיָּשָׁ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־ אָבִֽיו׃ אֲמַצְיָ֥הוּ עָשָׂ֖ה way·ya·‘aś hay·yā·šār bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh kə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- ’ā·ḇîw ’ă·maṣ·yā·hū ‘ā·śāhWLC · 4

  • He sought God throughout the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. And as long as he sought the LORD, God gave him success.

וַיְהִי֙ לִדְרֹ֣שׁ אֱלֹהִ֔ים בִּימֵ֣י זְכַרְיָ֔הוּ הַמֵּבִ֖ין בִּרְאֹ֣ת הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וּבִימֵי֙ דָּרְשׁ֣וֹ אֶת־ יְהוָ֔ה הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ס הִצְלִיח֖וֹ way·hî liḏ·rōš ’ĕ·lō·hîm bî·mê zə·ḵar·yā·hū ham·mê·ḇîn bir·’ōṯ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ū·ḇî·mê dā·rə·šōw ’eṯ- Yah·weh hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm hiṣ·lî·ḥōwWLC · 5

Uzziah went out to wage war against the Philistines, and he tore down the walls of Gath, - Jabneh, and Ashdod. Then he built cities near Ashdod and among the Philistines.

וַיֵּצֵא֙ וַיִּלָּ֣חֶם בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיִּפְרֹ֞ץ אֶת־ ח֣וֹמַת גַּ֗ת וְאֵת֙ חוֹמַ֣ת יַבְנֵ֔ה וְאֵ֖ת חוֹמַ֣ת אַשְׁדּ֑וֹד וַיִּבְנֶ֣ה עָרִ֔ים בְּאַשְׁדּ֖וֹד וּבַפְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ way·yê·ṣê way·yil·lā·ḥem bap·pə·liš·tîm way·yip̄·rōṣ ’eṯ- ḥō·w·maṯ gaṯ wə·’êṯ ḥō·w·maṯ yaḇ·nêh wə·’êṯ ḥō·w·maṯ ’aš·dō·wḏ way·yiḇ·neh ‘ā·rîm bə·’aš·dō·wḏ ū·ḇap·pə·liš·tîmWLC · 6

God helped him against the Philistines, against the Arabs living vvv in Gur-baal, and against the Meunites.

הָֽאֱלֹהִ֜ים וַיַּעְזְרֵ֨הוּ עַל־ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֧ים וְעַל־ הָעַרְבִיִּים הַיֹּשְׁבִ֥ים בְּגוּר־ בָּ֖עַל וְהַמְּעוּנִֽים׃ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·ya‘·zə·rê·hū ‘al- pə·liš·tîm wə·‘al- hå̄·ʿar·ḇī·yīm hay·yō·šə·ḇîm bə·ḡūr- bā·‘al wə·ham·mə·‘ū·nîmWLC · 7

The Ammonites brought tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread as far as the border of Egypt, for he had become exceedingly powerful.

הָֽעַמּוֹנִ֛ים וַיִּתְּנ֧וּ מִנְחָ֖ה לְעֻזִּיָּ֑הוּ שְׁמוֹ֙ וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ עַד־ לְב֣וֹא מִצְרַ֔יִם כִּ֥י עַד־ לְמָֽעְלָה׃ הֶחֱזִ֖יק hā·‘am·mō·w·nîm way·yit·tə·nū min·ḥāh lə·‘uz·zî·yā·hū šə·mōw way·yê·leḵ ‘aḏ- lə·ḇō·w miṣ·ra·yim kî ‘aḏ- lə·mā·‘ə·lāh he·ḥĕ·zîqWLC · 8

Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner… Gate, the Valley… Gate, and the angle in the wall, and he fortified them.

עֻזִּיָּ֤הוּ וַיִּ֨בֶן מִגְדָּלִים֙ בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם עַל־ הַפִּנָּ֛ה וְעַל־ שַׁ֧עַר הַגַּ֖יְא וְעַל־ שַׁ֥עַר הַמִּקְצ֑וֹעַ וַֽיְחַזְּקֵֽם׃ ‘uz·zî·yā·hū way·yi·ḇen miḡ·dā·lîm bî·rū·šā·lim ‘al- hap·pin·nāh wə·‘al- ša·‘ar hag·gay wə·‘al- ša·‘ar ham·miq·ṣō·w·a‘ way·ḥaz·zə·qêmWLC · 9

Since he had much livestock in the foothills and in the plain, he built towers in the desert and dug many cisterns. And since he was a lover of the soil, he had farmers and vinedressers in the hill country and in the fertile fields.

כִּ֤י הָ֣יָה ל֔וֹ רַבִּ֔ים מִקְנֶה־ וּבַשְּׁפֵלָ֖ה וּבַמִּישׁ֑וֹר וַיִּ֨בֶן מִגְדָּלִ֜ים בַּמִּדְבָּ֗ר וַיַּחְצֹב֙ רַּב֙ בֹּר֣וֹת כִּֽי־ הָיָֽה׃ס אֹהֵ֥ב אֲדָמָ֖ה אִכָּרִ֣ים וְכֹֽרְמִ֗ים בֶּהָרִים֙ וּבַכַּרְמֶ֔ל kî hā·yāh lōw rab·bîm miq·neh- ū·ḇaš·šə·p̄ê·lāh ū·ḇam·mî·šō·wr way·yi·ḇen miḡ·dā·lîm bam·miḏ·bār way·yaḥ·ṣōḇ raḇ bō·rō·wṯ kî- hā·yāh ’ō·hêḇ ’ă·ḏā·māh ’ik·kā·rîm wə·ḵō·rə·mîm be·hā·rîm ū·ḇak·kar·melWLC · 10

Uzziah had an army ready for battle that went out to war by assigned divisions…, as recorded by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer under the direction of Hananiah, one of the royal officers.

The total number of family leaders of the mighty men of valor was 2,600…

כֹּ֠ל מִסְפַּ֞ר הָאָבוֹת֙ רָאשֵׁ֤י לְגִבּ֣וֹרֵי חָ֔יִל אַלְפַּ֖יִם וְשֵׁ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃ kōl mis·par hā·’ā·ḇō·wṯ rā·šê lə·ḡib·bō·w·rê ḥā·yil ’al·pa·yim wə·šêš mê·’ō·wṯWLC · 12

Under their authority was an army… of 307,500… trained for war, a powerful force to support the king against his enemies.

Uzziah supplied… the entire army with shields, spears, helmets, armor, bows, and slingstones…

𐤏𐤆𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤍 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤑𐤁𐤀 𐤌𐤂𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤌𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤒𐤔𐤕𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤒𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤌

עֻזִּיָּ֜הוּ וַיָּכֶן֩ לָהֶ֨ם לְכָל־ הַצָּבָ֗א מָגִנִּ֤ים וּרְמָחִים֙ וְכ֣וֹבָעִ֔ים וְשִׁרְיֹנ֖וֹת וּקְשָׁת֑וֹת וּלְאַבְנֵ֖י קְלָעִֽים׃ ‘uz·zî·yā·hū way·yā·ḵen lā·hem lə·ḵāl haṣ·ṣā·ḇā mā·ḡin·nîm ū·rə·mā·ḥîm wə·ḵō·w·ḇā·‘îm wə·šir·yō·nō·wṯ ū·qə·šā·ṯō·wṯ ū·lə·’aḇ·nê qə·lā·‘îmWLC · 14

And in Jerusalem he made skillfully designed devices to shoot arrows and catapult large stones [from] the towers and corners. So his fame spread far [and wide], for he was helped tremendously until… he became powerful.

בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֨ם וַיַּ֣עַשׂ׀ חוֹשֵׁ֗ב מַחֲשֶׁ֣בֶת חִשְּׁבֹנ֜וֹת לִירוֹא֙ בַּֽחִצִּ֔ים גְּדֹל֑וֹת וּבָאֲבָנִ֖ים לִהְי֤וֹת עַל־ הַמִּגְדָּלִים֙ וְעַל־ הַפִּנּ֔וֹת שְׁמוֹ֙ וַיֵּצֵ֤א עַד־ לְמֵ֣רָח֔וֹק כִּֽי־ לְהֵעָזֵ֖ר הִפְלִ֥יא עַ֥ד כִּֽי־ חָזָֽק׃ bî·rū·šā·lim way·ya·‘aś ḥō·wō·šêḇ ma·ḥă·še·ḇeṯ ḥiš·šə·ḇō·nō·wṯ lî·rō·w ba·ḥiṣ·ṣîm gə·ḏō·lō·wṯ ū·ḇā·’ă·ḇā·nîm lih·yō·wṯ ‘al- ham·miḡ·dā·lîm wə·‘al- hap·pin·nō·wṯ šə·mōw way·yê·ṣê ‘aḏ- lə·mê·rā·ḥō·wq kî- lə·hê·‘ā·zêr hip̄·lî ‘aḏ kî- ḥā·zāqWLC · 15

But when [Uzziah] became powerful, his arrogance… led to his own destruction. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God, for he entered… the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.

Then Azariah the priest, along with eighty… brave priests of the LORD, went in after him.

עֲזַרְיָ֣הוּ הַכֹּהֵ֑ן וְעִמּ֞וֹ שְׁמוֹנִ֖ים בְּנֵי־ חָֽיִל׃ כֹּהֲנִ֧ים׀ לַיהוָ֛ה וַיָּבֹ֥א אַחֲרָ֖יו ‘ă·zar·yā·hū hak·kō·hên wə·‘im·mōw šə·mō·w·nîm bə·nê- ḥā·yil kō·hă·nîm Yah·weh way·yā·ḇō ’a·ḥă·rāwWLC · 17

They took their stand against King Uzziah and said “Uzziah, you have no right to offer incense to the LORD. Only the priests, the descendants of Aaron, are consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have acted unfaithfully; you will not receive honor from the LORD God.”

Uzziah, with a censer in his hand to offer incense, was enraged. But while he raged against the priests in their presence… in the house of the LORD before the altar of incense, leprosy broke out on his forehead.

עֻזִּיָּ֔הוּ מִקְטֶ֖רֶת וּבְיָד֥וֹ לְהַקְטִ֑יר וַיִּזְעַף֙ וּבְזַעְפּ֣וֹ עִם־ הַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים לִפְנֵ֤י הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה מֵעַ֖ל לְמִזְבַּ֥ח הַקְּטֹֽרֶת׃ וְ֠הַצָּרַעַת זָרְחָ֨ה בְמִצְח֜וֹ ‘uz·zî·yā·hū miq·ṭe·reṯ ū·ḇə·yā·ḏōw lə·haq·ṭîr way·yiz·‘ap̄ ū·ḇə·za‘·pōw ‘im- hak·kō·hă·nîm lip̄·nê hak·kō·hă·nîm bə·ḇêṯ Yah·weh mê·‘al lə·miz·baḥ haq·qə·ṭō·reṯ wə·haṣ·ṣā·ra·‘aṯ zā·rə·ḥāh ḇə·miṣ·ḥōwWLC · 19

When Azariah the chief priest and all the priests turned to him and saw his leprous forehead, they rushed him out. Indeed, he himself hurried to get out, because the LORD had afflicted him.

So King Uzziah was a leper until the day of his death. He lived vvv in isolation, leprous and cut off from the house of the LORD, while his son Jotham had charge of the royal palace [and] governed the people of the land.

וְיֶ֙תֶר֙ דִּבְרֵ֣י עֻזִּיָּ֔הוּ הָרִאשֹׁנִ֖ים וְהָאֲחֲרֹנִ֑ים כָּתַ֛ב הַנָּבִֽיא׃ יְשַֽׁעְיָ֥הוּ בֶן־ אָמ֖וֹץ wə·ye·ṯer diḇ·rê ‘uz·zî·yā·hū hā·ri·šō·nîm wə·hå̄·ʾă·ḥă·rō·nīm kā·ṯaḇ han·nā·ḇî yə·ša‘·yā·hū ḇen- ’ā·mō·wṣWLC · 22

And Uzziah rested with his fathers and was buried near [them] in a field of burial that [belonged] to the kings, for [the people] said, “He [was] a leper.” And his son Jotham reigned in his place.
