Chapter 28
Ahaz Reigns in Judah
1
Ahaz was twenty years old… when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen… years. And unlike David his father, he did not do [what was] right in the eyes of the LORD.
𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤔 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
אָחָ֣ז עֶשְׂרִ֤ים בֶּן־ שָׁנָה֙ בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְשֵׁשׁ־ עֶשְׂרֵ֣ה שָׁנָ֔ה כְּדָוִ֥יד אָבִֽיו׃ וְלֹא־ עָשָׂ֧ה הַיָּשָׁ֛ר בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה ’ā·ḥāz ‘eś·rîm ben- šā·nāh bə·mā·lə·ḵōw mā·laḵ bî·rū·šā·lim wə·šêš- ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh kə·ḏā·wîḏ ’ā·ḇîw wə·lō- ‘ā·śāh hay·yā·šār bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh — WLC · 1

Instead, he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and even made cast images of the Baals.

Moreover, Ahaz burned incense in the Valley vvv of Ben-hinnom and sacrificed [his] sons in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites…

And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.

וַיְזַבֵּ֧חַ וַיְקַטֵּ֛ר בַּבָּמ֖וֹת וְעַל־ הַגְּבָע֑וֹת וְתַ֖חַת כָּל־ רַעֲנָֽן׃ עֵ֥ץ way·zab·bê·aḥ way·qaṭ·ṭêr bab·bā·mō·wṯ wə·‘al- hag·gə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ kāl- ra·‘ă·nān ‘êṣ — WLC · 4
Aram Defeats Judah

So the LORD his God delivered Ahaz into the hand of the king of Aram, who attacked him and took… many… captives to Damascus. Ahaz was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with great force.

יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָיו֮ וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֜הוּ בְּיַ֣ד מֶ֣לֶךְ אֲרָם֒ וַיַּ֨כּוּ־ ב֔וֹ וַיִּשְׁבּ֤וּ מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ גְדוֹלָ֔ה וַיָּבִ֖יאוּ שִׁבְיָ֣ה דַּרְמָ֑שֶׂק וְ֠גַם נִתָּ֔ן בְּיַד־ מֶ֤לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיַּךְ־ בּ֖וֹ גְדוֹלָֽה׃ס מַכָּ֥ה Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāw way·yit·tə·nê·hū bə·yaḏ me·leḵ ’ă·rām way·yak·kū- ḇōw way·yiš·bū mim·men·nū ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh way·yā·ḇî·’ū šiḇ·yāh dar·mā·śeq wə·ḡam nit·tān bə·yaḏ- me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êl way·yaḵ- bōw ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh mak·kāh — WLC · 5

For in one day Pekah son of Remaliah killed 120,000 {}… valiant men in Judah. [This happened] because they had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers.

Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, killed Maaseiah the son of the king, Azrikam the governor of the palace, and Elkanah the second to the king.

זִכְרִ֣י׀ אֶת־ גִּבּ֣וֹר אֶפְרַ֗יִם וַֽיַּהֲרֹ֞ג מַעֲשֵׂיָ֙הוּ֙ בֶּן־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְאֶת־ עַזְרִיקָ֖ם נְגִ֣יד הַבָּ֑יִת וְאֶת־ אֶלְקָנָ֖ה מִשְׁנֵ֥ה הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ס ziḵ·rî ’eṯ- gib·bō·wr ’ep̄·ra·yim way·ya·hă·rōḡ ma·‘ă·śê·yā·hū ben- ham·me·leḵ wə·’eṯ- ‘az·rî·qām nə·ḡîḏ hab·bā·yiṯ wə·’eṯ- ’el·qā·nāh miš·nêh ham·me·leḵ — WLC · 7

Then the Israelites… took 200,000… captives from their kinsmen— women, sons, and daughters. They also carried off a great deal of plunder and brought it to Samaria.

בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל מָאתַ֣יִם אֶ֗לֶף וַיִּשְׁבּוּ֩ מֵֽאֲחֵיהֶ֜ם נָשִׁים֙ בָּנִ֣ים וּבָנ֔וֹת וְגַם־ בָּזְז֣וּ מֵהֶ֑ם רָ֖ב שָׁלָ֥ל וַיָּבִ֥יאוּ אֶת־ הַשָּׁלָ֖ל לְשֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃ס ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl mā·ṯa·yim ’e·lep̄ way·yiš·bū mê·’ă·ḥê·hem nā·šîm bā·nîm ū·ḇā·nō·wṯ wə·ḡam- bā·zə·zū mê·hem rāḇ šā·lāl way·yā·ḇî·’ū ’eṯ- haš·šā·lāl lə·šō·mə·rō·wn — WLC · 8

But a prophet of the LORD named Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army that returned to Samaria. “Look,” he said to them, “because of His wrath against Judah, the LORD, the God of your fathers, has delivered them into your hand. But you have slaughtered them in a rage [that] reaches up to heaven.

And now you intend to reduce to slavery the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem. But are you… not also guilty before the LORD your God?

וְ֠עַתָּה אַתֶּ֣ם אֹמְרִ֔ים לִכְבֹּ֛שׁ לָכֶ֑ם לַעֲבָדִ֥ים וְלִשְׁפָח֖וֹת בְּנֵֽי־ יְהוּדָ֤ה וִֽירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ אַתֶּם֙ עִמָּכֶ֣ם הֲלֹ֤א רַק־ אֲשָׁמ֔וֹת לַיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ wə·‘at·tāh ’at·tem ’ō·mə·rîm liḵ·bōš lā·ḵem la·‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm wə·liš·p̄ā·ḥō·wṯ bə·nê- yə·hū·ḏāh wî·rū·šā·lim ’at·tem ‘im·mā·ḵem hă·lō raq- ’ă·šā·mō·wṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem — WLC · 10

Now therefore, listen to me and return the captives you took from your kinsmen, for the fierce anger… of the LORD is upon you.”

וְעַתָּ֣ה שְׁמָע֔וּנִי וְהָשִׁ֙יבוּ֙ הַשִּׁבְיָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר שְׁבִיתֶ֖ם מֵאֲחֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֛י חֲר֥וֹן אַף־ יְהוָ֖ה עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃ס wə·‘at·tāh šə·mā·‘ū·nî wə·hā·šî·ḇū haš·šiḇ·yāh ’ă·šer šə·ḇî·ṯem mê·’ă·ḥê·ḵem kî ḥă·rō·wn ’ap̄- Yah·weh ‘ă·lê·ḵem — WLC · 11

Then some of the leaders of the Ephraimites… Azariah son of Jehohanan, Berechiah son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai— stood in opposition to those arriving from the war.

אֲנָשִׁ֜ים מֵרָאשֵׁ֣י בְנֵֽי־ אֶפְרַ֗יִם עֲזַרְיָ֤הוּ בֶן־ יְהֽוֹחָנָן֙ בֶּרֶכְיָ֣הוּ בֶן־ מְשִׁלֵּמ֔וֹת וִֽיחִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ בֶּן־ שַׁלֻּ֔ם וַעֲמָשָׂ֖א בֶּן־ חַדְלָ֑י וַיָּקֻ֨מוּ עַל־ הַבָּאִ֖ים מִן־ הַצָּבָֽא׃ ’ă·nā·šîm mê·rā·šê ḇə·nê- ’ep̄·ra·yim ‘ă·zar·yā·hū ḇen- yə·hō·w·ḥā·nān be·reḵ·yā·hū ḇen- mə·šil·lê·mō·wṯ wî·ḥiz·qî·yā·hū ben- šal·lum wa·‘ă·mā·śā ben- ḥaḏ·lāy way·yā·qu·mū ‘al- hab·bā·’îm min- haṣ·ṣā·ḇā — WLC · 12

“You must not bring the captives here,” they said “for you are proposing to bring guilt upon us from the LORD and to add to our sins and our guilt. For our guilt is great, and fierce anger… is upon Israel.”

לֹא־ תָבִ֤יאוּ אֶת־ הַשִּׁבְיָה֙ הֵ֔נָּה וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לָהֶ֗ם כִּי֩ אַתֶּ֣ם אֹמְרִ֔ים לְאַשְׁמַ֨ת עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙ יְהוָ֤ה לְהֹסִ֥יף עַל־ חַטֹּאתֵ֖ינוּ וְעַל־ אַשְׁמָתֵ֑ינוּ כִּֽי־ לָ֔נוּ אַשְׁמָה֙ רַבָּ֤ה וַחֲר֥וֹן אָ֖ף עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס lō- ṯā·ḇî·’ū ’eṯ- haš·šiḇ·yāh hên·nāh way·yō·mə·rū lā·hem kî ’at·tem ’ō·mə·rîm lə·’aš·maṯ ‘ā·lê·nū Yah·weh lə·hō·sîp̄ ‘al- ḥaṭ·ṭō·ṯê·nū wə·‘al- ’aš·mā·ṯê·nū kî- lā·nū ’aš·māh rab·bāh wa·ḥă·rō·wn ’āp̄ ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 13

So the armed men left the captives and the plunder before the leaders and all the assembly.

הֶֽחָל֗וּץ אֶת־ וַיַּעֲזֹ֣ב הַשִּׁבְיָה֙ וְאֶת־ הַבִּזָּ֔ה לִפְנֵ֥י הַשָּׂרִ֖ים וְכָל־ הַקָּהָֽל׃ he·ḥā·lūṣ ’eṯ- way·ya·‘ă·zōḇ haš·šiḇ·yāh wə·’eṯ- hab·biz·zāh lip̄·nê haś·śā·rîm wə·ḵāl haq·qā·hāl — WLC · 14

Then the men who were designated by name arose, took charge of the captives, and provided from the plunder clothing for the naked. They clothed them, gave them sandals and food and drink, anointed [their wounds], and put all the feeble on donkeys. So they brought them to Jericho, the City of Palms, to their brothers. Then they returned to Samaria.

For the LORD humbled Judah because Ahaz king of Israel… had thrown off restraint in Judah and had been most unfaithful… to the LORD.

Although Ahaz had taken a portion from the house of the LORD, from the royal palace, and from the princes and had presented [it] to the king of Assyria, it did not help him.

In the time of his distress King Ahaz became even more unfaithful to the LORD.

He sacrificed to the gods of Damascus, who had defeated him, and he said, “Because the gods of the kings of Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.” But these [gods] were the downfall of [Ahaz] and of all Israel.

Then Ahaz gathered up the articles of the house of God, cut them… into pieces, shut the doors of the house of the LORD, and set up altars of his own on every street corner in Jerusalem.

In every city… of Judah he built high places to offer incense to other gods, and so he provoked the LORD, the God of his fathers.

And Ahaz rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of Jerusalem, but he was not placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel. And his son Hezekiah reigned in his place.
