Chapter 35

Josiah Restores the Passover

1

Then Josiah kept the Passover to the LORD in Jerusalem, and the Passover lamb was slaughtered on the fourteenth… day of the first month.

𐤉𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤐𐤎𐤇 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤄𐤐𐤎𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤇𐤈𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔

יֹאשִׁיָּ֧הוּ וַיַּ֨עַשׂ פֶּ֖סַח לַיהוָ֑ה בִֽירוּשָׁלִַ֛ם הַפֶּ֔סַח וַיִּשְׁחֲט֣וּ בְּאַרְבָּעָ֥ה עָשָׂ֖ר הָרִאשֽׁוֹן׃ לַחֹ֥דֶשׁ yō·šî·yā·hū way·ya·‘aś pe·saḥ Yah·weh ḇî·rū·šā·lim hap·pe·saḥ way·yiš·ḥă·ṭū bə·’ar·bā·‘āh ‘ā·śār hā·ri·šō·wn la·ḥō·ḏešWLC · 1

He appointed the priests to their duties and encouraged them in the service of the house of the LORD.

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

וַיַּעֲמֵ֥ד הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים עַל־ מִשְׁמְרוֹתָ֑ם וַֽיְחַזְּקֵ֔ם לַעֲבוֹדַ֖ת בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ way·ya·‘ă·mêḏ hak·kō·hă·nîm ‘al- miš·mə·rō·w·ṯām way·ḥaz·zə·qêm la·‘ă·ḇō·w·ḏaṯ bêṯ Yah·wehWLC · 2

To the Levites who taught all Israel and were holy to the LORD, [Josiah] said: “Put the holy ark in the temple built by Solomon son of David king of Israel. It is not to be carried around on your shoulders. Now serve the LORD your God and His people Israel.

Prepare [yourselves] by families… in your divisions, according to the instructions written by David king of Israel and Solomon his son.

𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤊𐤌𐤇𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤕𐤁 𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤌𐤊𐤕𐤁 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤅

וְהָכִ֥ונוּ לְבֵית־ אֲבוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם כְּמַחְלְקוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם בִּכְתָ֗ב דָּוִיד֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וּבְמִכְתַּ֖ב שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה בְנֽוֹ׃ wə·hå̄·ḵi·w·nū lə·ḇêṯ- ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem kə·maḥ·lə·qō·w·ṯê·ḵem biḵ·ṯāḇ dā·wîḏ me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êl ū·ḇə·miḵ·taḇ šə·lō·mōh ḇə·nōwWLC · 4

Moreover, stand in the Holy Place by the divisions of the families… of your kinsmen the lay people…, and by the divisions of the families… of the Levites.

𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤁𐤒𐤃𐤔 𐤋𐤐𐤋𐤂𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤋𐤒𐤕 𐤀𐤁 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌

וְעִמְד֣וּ בַקֹּ֗דֶשׁ לִפְלֻגּוֹת֙ הָֽאָב֔וֹת בֵּ֣ית לַאֲחֵיכֶ֖ם בְּנֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וַחֲלֻקַּ֥ת אָ֖ב בֵּֽית־ לַלְוִיִּֽם׃ wə·‘im·ḏū ḇaq·qō·ḏeš lip̄·lug·gō·wṯ hā·’ā·ḇō·wṯ bêṯ la·’ă·ḥê·ḵem bə·nê hā·‘ām wa·ḥă·luq·qaṯ ’āḇ bêṯ- lal·wî·yimWLC · 5

Slaughter the Passover lambs, consecrate yourselves, and make preparations for your fellow countrymen to carry out the word of the LORD [given] by Moses.”

𐤅𐤔𐤇𐤈𐤅 𐤄𐤐𐤎𐤇 𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤔𐤄𐤐

וְשַׁחֲט֖וּ הַפָּ֑סַח וְהִתְקַדְּשׁוּ֙ וְהָכִ֣ינוּ לַאֲחֵיכֶ֔ם לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת כִּדְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה בְּיַד־ מֹשֶֽׁה׃פ wə·ša·ḥă·ṭū hap·pā·saḥ wə·hiṯ·qad·də·šū wə·hā·ḵî·nū la·’ă·ḥê·ḵem la·‘ă·śō·wṯ kiḏ·ḇar- Yah·weh bə·yaḏ- mō·šehWLC · 6

From his own flocks [and herds] Josiah contributed 30,000 {}… lambs and goats plus 3,000… bulls for the Passover offerings for all the people who were present…

הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ס מֵרְכ֥וּשׁ צֹ֞אן יֹאשִׁיָּ֣הוּ וַיָּ֣רֶם לִבְנֵ֪י שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים אֶ֔לֶף כְּבָשִׂ֣ים וּבְנֵֽי־ עִזִּים֮ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֑ים אֵ֖לֶּה וּבָקָ֖ר הַכֹּ֣ל לַפְּסָחִים֒ לְכָל־ הָעָ֟ם הַנִּמְצָ֗א לְמִסְפַּר֙ ham·me·leḵ mê·rə·ḵūš ṣōn yō·šî·yā·hū way·yā·rem liḇ·nê šə·lō·šîm ’e·lep̄ kə·ḇā·śîm ū·ḇə·nê- ‘iz·zîm šə·lō·šeṯ ’ă·lā·p̄îm ’êl·leh ū·ḇā·qār hak·kōl lap·pə·sā·ḥîm lə·ḵāl hā·‘ām han·nim·ṣā lə·mis·parWLC · 7

His officials also contributed willingly to the people and priests and Levites. Hilkiah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, the chief officials of the house of God, gave the priests 2,600… Passover [offerings] and 300… bulls.

𐤅𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤃𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤋𐤒𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤂𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤔 𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤐𐤎𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤔 𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤒𐤓

וְשָׂרָ֞יו הֵרִ֑ימוּ לִנְדָבָ֥ה לָעָ֛ם לַכֹּהֲנִ֥ים וְלַלְוִיִּ֖ם חִלְקִיָּ֨ה וּזְכַרְיָ֜הוּ וִֽיחִיאֵ֗ל נְגִידֵי֙ בֵּ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים נָתְנ֣וּ לַכֹּהֲנִ֞ים אַלְפַּ֙יִם֙ וְשֵׁ֣שׁ מֵא֔וֹת לַפְּסָחִ֗ים שְׁלֹ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃ וּבָקָ֖ר wə·śā·rāw hê·rî·mū lin·ḏā·ḇāh lā·‘ām lak·kō·hă·nîm wə·lal·wî·yim ḥil·qî·yāh ū·zə·ḵar·yā·hū wî·ḥî·’êl nə·ḡî·ḏê bêṯ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm nā·ṯə·nū lak·kō·hă·nîm ’al·pa·yim wə·šêš mê·’ō·wṯ lap·pə·sā·ḥîm šə·lōš mê·’ō·wṯ ū·ḇā·qārWLC · 8

Additionally, Conaniah and his brothers Shemaiah and Nethanel, as well as Hashabiah, Jeiel, and Jozabad, officers of the Levites, contributed to the Levites 5,000 {}… Passover offerings and 500… bulls.

וְכָונַנְיָהוּ אֶחָ֗יו וּשְׁמַֽעְיָ֨הוּ וּנְתַנְאֵ֜ל וַחֲשַׁבְיָ֧הוּ וִיעִיאֵ֛ל וְיוֹזָבָ֖ד שָׂרֵ֣י הַלְוִיִּ֑ם הֵרִ֨ימוּ לַלְוִיִּ֤ם חֲמֵ֣שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֔ים לַפְּסָחִים֙ חֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃ וּבָקָ֖ר wə·ḵå̄·w·nan·yå̄·hū ’e·ḥāw ū·šə·ma‘·yā·hū ū·nə·ṯan·’êl wa·ḥă·šaḇ·yā·hū wî·‘î·’êl wə·yō·w·zā·ḇāḏ śā·rê hal·wî·yim hê·rî·mū lal·wî·yim ḥă·mê·šeṯ ’ă·lā·p̄îm lap·pə·sā·ḥîm ḥă·mêš mê·’ō·wṯ ū·ḇā·qārWLC · 9

So the service was prepared; the priests stood in their places and the Levites in their divisions according to the king’s command.

הָעֲבוֹדָ֑ה וַתִּכּ֖וֹן הַכֹּהֲנִ֧ים וַיַּֽעַמְד֨וּ עַל־ עָמְדָ֛ם וְהַלְוִיִּ֥ם עַל־ מַחְלְקוֹתָ֖ם הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ כְּמִצְוַ֥ת hā·‘ă·ḇō·w·ḏāh wat·tik·kō·wn hak·kō·hă·nîm way·ya·‘am·ḏū ‘al- ‘ā·mə·ḏām wə·hal·wî·yim ‘al- maḥ·lə·qō·w·ṯām ham·me·leḵ kə·miṣ·waṯWLC · 10

And they slaughtered the Passover lambs, while the priests splattered the blood handed to them and the Levites skinned [the animals].

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤇𐤈𐤅 𐤄𐤐𐤎𐤇 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤓𐤒𐤅 𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤐𐤔𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤌

וַֽיִּשְׁחֲט֖וּ הַפָּ֑סַח הַכֹּהֲנִים֙ וַיִּזְרְק֤וּ מִיָּדָ֔ם וְהַלְוִיִּ֖ם מַפְשִׁיטִֽים׃ way·yiš·ḥă·ṭū hap·pā·saḥ hak·kō·hă·nîm way·yiz·rə·qū mî·yā·ḏām wə·hal·wî·yim map̄·šî·ṭîmWLC · 11

They set aside the burnt offerings to be given to the divisions of the families… vvv of the people to offer to the LORD, as it is written in the Book of Moses. And they did the same with the bulls.

𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤕𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤐𐤋𐤂𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤊𐤕𐤅𐤁 𐤁𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤍 𐤋𐤁𐤒𐤓

וַיָּסִ֨ירוּ הָעֹלָ֜ה לְ֠תִתָּם לְמִפְלַגּ֤וֹת אָבוֹת֙ לְבֵית־ לִבְנֵ֣י הָעָ֔ם לְהַקְרִיב֙ לַיהוָ֔ה כַּכָּת֖וּב בְּסֵ֣פֶר מֹשֶׁ֑ה וְכֵ֖ן לַבָּקָֽר׃ way·yā·sî·rū hā·‘ō·lāh lə·ṯit·tām lə·mip̄·lag·gō·wṯ ’ā·ḇō·wṯ lə·ḇêṯ- liḇ·nê hā·‘ām lə·haq·rîḇ Yah·weh kak·kā·ṯūḇ bə·sê·p̄er mō·šeh wə·ḵên lab·bā·qārWLC · 12

They roasted the Passover [animals] on the fire according to the regulation, and they boiled the [other] holy [offerings] in pots, kettles, and bowls and quickly brought them to all vvv the people.

𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅 𐤄𐤐𐤎𐤇 𐤁𐤀𐤔 𐤊𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤎𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤃𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤑𐤋𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤉𐤑𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤌

וַֽיְבַשְּׁל֥וּ הַפֶּ֛סַח בָּאֵ֖שׁ כַּמִּשְׁפָּ֑ט בִּשְּׁל֗וּ וְהַקֳּדָשִׁ֣ים בַּסִּיר֤וֹת וּבַדְּוָדִים֙ וּבַצֵּ֣לָח֔וֹת וַיָּרִ֖יצוּ לְכָל־ בְּנֵ֥י הָעָֽם׃ way·ḇaš·šə·lū hap·pe·saḥ bā·’êš kam·miš·pāṭ biš·šə·lū wə·haq·qo·ḏā·šîm bas·sî·rō·wṯ ū·ḇad·də·wā·ḏîm ū·ḇaṣ·ṣê·lā·ḥō·wṯ way·yā·rî·ṣū lə·ḵāl bə·nê hā·‘āmWLC · 13

Afterward, they made preparations for themselves and for the priests, since the priests, the descendants of Aaron, [were] offering up burnt offerings and fat until nightfall. So the Levites made preparations for themselves and for the priests, the descendants of Aaron.

𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤁𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤇𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍

וְאַחַ֗ר הֵכִ֤ינוּ לָהֶם֙ וְלַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים כִּ֤י הַכֹּהֲנִים֙ בְּנֵ֣י אַהֲרֹ֔ן בְּהַֽעֲל֛וֹת הָעוֹלָ֥ה וְהַחֲלָבִ֖ים עַד־ לָ֑יְלָה וְהַלְוִיִּם֙ הֵכִ֣ינוּ לָהֶ֔ם וְלַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים בְּנֵ֥י אַהֲרֹֽן׃ wə·’a·ḥar hê·ḵî·nū lā·hem wə·lak·kō·hă·nîm kî hak·kō·hă·nîm bə·nê ’a·hă·rōn bə·ha·‘ă·lō·wṯ hā·‘ō·w·lāh wə·ha·ḥă·lā·ḇîm ‘aḏ- lā·yə·lāh wə·hal·wî·yim hê·ḵî·nū lā·hem wə·lak·kō·hă·nîm bə·nê ’a·hă·rōnWLC · 14

The singers, the descendants of Asaph, were at their stations according to the command of David, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun the king’s seer. And the gatekeepers at each gate… did not need to leave… their posts, because their fellow Levites made preparations for them.

So on that day the entire service of the LORD was carried out for celebrating the Passover and offering burnt offerings on the altar of the LORD, according to the command of King Josiah.

The Israelites… who were present also observed the Passover at that time, as well as the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days.

No such Passover had been observed in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet. None… of the kings of Israel ever observed a Passover like the one that Josiah observed with the priests, the Levites, all Judah, the Israelites who were present, and the people of Jerusalem.

The Death of Josiah

After all this, when Josiah had set the temple {in order}, Neco king of Egypt marched up to fight at Carchemish by the Euphrates, and Josiah went out to confront him.

But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue between you and me…, O king of Judah? I have not come against you today, but… I am fighting another dynasty, and God has told me to hurry. So stop opposing God, who is with me, or He will destroy you!”

Josiah, however,… did not turn away from him; instead, in order to engage him in battle he disguised himself. He did not listen to Neco’s words from the mouth of God, but went to fight him on the Plain of Megiddo.

There the archers shot King Josiah, who said to his servants, “Take me away, for I am badly wounded!”

So his servants took him out of his chariot, put him in his second chariot, and brought him to Jerusalem, where he died. And [Josiah] was buried in the tomb of his fathers, and all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for [him].

Laments over Josiah

Then Jeremiah lamented over Josiah, and to this day all the male and female singers recite laments over Josiah. They established them as a statute for Israel, and indeed they are written in the Book of Laments.
