Chapter 10

Shecaniah’s Encouragement

1

While Ezra prayed and made this confession, weeping and falling facedown before the house of God, a very large assembly of Israelites— men, women, and children— gathered around him, and the people wept bitterly… as well.

𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤊𐤄𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤋 𐤅𐤊𐤄𐤕𐤅𐤃𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤍𐤐𐤋 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤓𐤁 𐤒𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤒𐤁𐤑𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤄𐤎 𐤊𐤉

עֶזְרָא֙ וּכְהִתְפַּלֵּ֤ל וּכְ֨הִתְוַדֹּת֔וֹ בֹּכֶה֙ וּמִתְנַפֵּ֔ל לִפְנֵ֖י בֵּ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים מְאֹ֗ד רַב־ קָהָ֣ל מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֲנָשִׁ֤ים וְנָשִׁים֙ וִֽילָדִ֔ים נִקְבְּצוּ֩ אֵלָ֨יו הָעָ֖ם בָכ֥וּ הַרְבֵּה־ בֶֽכֶה׃ס כִּֽי־ ‘ez·rā ū·ḵə·hiṯ·pal·lêl ū·ḵə·hiṯ·wad·dō·ṯō bō·ḵeh ū·miṯ·nap·pêl lip̄·nê bêṯ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm mə·’ōḏ raḇ- qā·hāl mî·yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·nā·šîm wə·nā·šîm wî·lā·ḏîm niq·bə·ṣū ’ê·lāw hā·‘ām ḇā·ḵū har·bêh- ḇe·ḵeh kî-WLC · 1

Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, an Elamite…, said to Ezra: “We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the people of the land, yet in spite of this, there is hope for Israel.

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤔𐤊𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤁 𐤍𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

וַיַּעַן֩ שְׁכַנְיָ֨ה בֶן־ יְחִיאֵ֜ל מִבְּנֵ֤י עוֹלָם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְעֶזְרָ֔א אֲנַ֙חְנוּ֙ מָעַ֣לְנוּ בֵאלֹהֵ֔ינוּ וַנֹּ֛שֶׁב נָכְרִיּ֖וֹת נָשִׁ֥ים מֵעַמֵּ֣י הָאָ֑רֶץ וְעַתָּ֛ה עַל־ זֹֽאת׃ יֵשׁ־ מִקְוֶ֥ה לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל way·ya·‘an šə·ḵan·yāh ḇen- yə·ḥî·’êl mib·bə·nê ʿō·lå̄m way·yō·mer lə·‘ez·rā ’ă·naḥ·nū mā·‘al·nū ḇê·lō·hê·nū wan·nō·šeḇ nā·ḵə·rî·yō·wṯ nā·šîm mê·‘am·mê hā·’ā·reṣ wə·‘at·tāh ‘al- zōṯ yêš- miq·weh lə·yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 2

So now let us make a covenant before our God to send away all the foreign wives and their children,… according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the command of our God. Let it be done according to the Law.

וְעַתָּ֣ה נִֽכְרָת־ בְּרִ֣ית לֵ֠אלֹהֵינוּ לְהוֹצִ֨יא כָל־ נָשִׁ֜ים וְהַנּוֹלָ֤ד מֵהֶם֙ בַּעֲצַ֣ת אֲדֹנָ֔י וְהַחֲרֵדִ֖ים בְּמִצְוַ֣ת אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ יֵעָשֶֽׂה׃ וְכַתּוֹרָ֖ה wə·‘at·tāh niḵ·rāṯ- bə·rîṯ lê·lō·hê·nū lə·hō·w·ṣî ḵāl nā·šîm wə·han·nō·w·lāḏ mê·hem ba·‘ă·ṣaṯ ’ă·ḏō·nāy wə·ha·ḥă·rê·ḏîm bə·miṣ·waṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū yê·‘ā·śeh wə·ḵat·tō·w·rāhWLC · 3

Get up, for [this] matter [is] your [responsibility], and we will support you. Be strong and take action!”

𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤄𐤐

ק֛וּם כִּֽי־ הַדָּבָ֖ר עָלֶ֥יךָ וַאֲנַ֣חְנוּ עִמָּ֑ךְ חֲזַ֖ק וַעֲשֵֽׂה׃פ qūm kî- had·dā·ḇār ‘ā·le·ḵā wa·’ă·naḥ·nū ‘im·māḵ ḥă·zaq wa·‘ă·śêhWLC · 4

So Ezra got up and made the leading priests, Levites, and all Israel take an oath to do what had been said… And they took the oath.

The People’s Confession of Sin

Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and walked to the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. And while he stayed there, he ate no food and drank no water, because he was mourning over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.

עֶזְרָ֗א וַיָּ֣קָם מִלִּפְנֵי֙ בֵּ֣ית הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיֵּ֕לֶךְ אֶל־ לִשְׁכַּ֖ת יְהוֹחָנָ֣ן בֶּן־ אֶלְיָשִׁ֑יב וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ שָׁ֗ם אָכַל֙ לֹֽא־ לֶ֤חֶם שָׁתָ֔ה לֹֽא־ וּמַ֣יִם כִּ֥י מִתְאַבֵּ֖ל עַל־ מַ֥עַל הַגּוֹלָֽה׃ס ‘ez·rā way·yā·qām mil·lip̄·nê bêṯ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yê·leḵ ’el- liš·kaṯ yə·hō·w·ḥā·nān ben- ’el·yā·šîḇ way·yê·leḵ šām ’ā·ḵal lō- le·ḥem šā·ṯāh lō- ū·ma·yim kî miṯ·’ab·bêl ‘al- ma·‘al hag·gō·w·lāhWLC · 6

And a proclamation was issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem that all the exiles… should gather at Jerusalem.

ק֜וֹל וַיַּעֲבִ֨ירוּ בִּיהוּדָ֣ה וִירֽוּשָׁלִַ֗ם לְכֹל֙ בְּנֵ֣י הַגּוֹלָ֔ה לְהִקָּבֵ֖ץ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ qō·wl way·ya·‘ă·ḇî·rū bî·hū·ḏāh wî·rū·šā·lim lə·ḵōl bə·nê hag·gō·w·lāh lə·hiq·qā·ḇêṣ yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 7

Whoever failed to appear within three days would forfeit all his property,… according to the counsel of the leaders and elders, and would himself be expelled from the assembly of the exiles.

𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤓𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤊𐤅𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤊𐤏𐤑𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤁𐤃𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤄𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤋𐤄𐤎

וְכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹֽא־ יָב֜וֹא לִשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת הַיָּמִ֗ים יָחֳרַ֖ם כָּל־ רְכוּשׁ֑וֹ וְה֥וּא כַּעֲצַ֤ת הַשָּׂרִים֙ וְהַזְּקֵנִ֔ים יִבָּדֵ֖ל מִקְּהַ֥ל הַגּוֹלָֽה׃ס wə·ḵōl ’ă·šer lō- yā·ḇō·w liš·lō·šeṯ hay·yā·mîm yā·ḥo·ram kāl- rə·ḵū·šōw wə·hū ka·‘ă·ṣaṯ haś·śā·rîm wə·haz·zə·qê·nîm yib·bā·ḏêl miq·qə·hal hag·gō·w·lāhWLC · 8

So within the three days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled in Jerusalem,… and on the twentieth day… of the ninth month, all the people sat in the square at the house of God, trembling regarding this matter and because of the heavy rain.

Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have been unfaithful by marrying foreign women, adding to the guilt of Israel.

𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤀 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤍𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤐 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

עֶזְרָ֤א הַכֹּהֵן֙ וַיָּ֨קָם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם אַתֶּ֣ם מְעַלְתֶּ֔ם וַתֹּשִׁ֖יבוּ נָכְרִיּ֑וֹת נָשִׁ֣ים לְהוֹסִ֖יף עַל־ אַשְׁמַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ‘ez·rā hak·kō·hên way·yā·qām way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem ’at·tem mə·‘al·tem wat·tō·šî·ḇū nā·ḵə·rî·yō·wṯ nā·šîm lə·hō·w·sîp̄ ‘al- ’aš·maṯ yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 10

Now, therefore, make a confession to the LORD, the God of your fathers, and do His will. Separate yourselves from the people of the land and from your foreign wives.”

𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤕𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤃𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤄𐤍𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌

וְעַתָּ֗ה תְּנ֥וּ תוֹדָ֛ה לַיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽי־ אֲבֹתֵיכֶ֖ם וַעֲשׂ֣וּ רְצוֹנ֑וֹ וְהִבָּֽדְלוּ֙ וּמִן־ מֵעַמֵּ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ הַנָּכְרִיּֽוֹת׃ הַנָּשִׁ֖ים wə·‘at·tāh tə·nū ṯō·w·ḏāh Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê- ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem wa·‘ă·śū rə·ṣō·w·nōw wə·hib·bā·ḏə·lū ū·min- mê·‘am·mê hā·’ā·reṣ han·nā·ḵə·rî·yō·wṯ han·nā·šîmWLC · 11

And the whole assembly… responded in a loud voice: “Truly we must do as you say…!

𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤒𐤄𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅

כָֽל־ הַקָּהָ֛ל וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ וַיַּֽעְנ֧וּ גָּד֑וֹל ק֣וֹל כֵּ֛ן לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃ כְּדִבְרֶיךָ עָלֵ֖ינוּ ḵāl haq·qā·hāl way·yō·mə·rū way·ya‘·nū gā·ḏō·wl qō·wl kên la·‘ă·śō·wṯ kə·ḏiḇ·rɛ·ḵå̄ ‘ā·lê·nūWLC · 12

But there are many people here, and it is the rainy season. We are not able to stay out in the open. Nor [is this] the work of one or two days, for we have transgressed greatly in this matter.

𐤀𐤁𐤋 𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤂𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤊𐤇 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤃 𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤑 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤋𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤐𐤔𐤏 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓

אֲבָ֞ל רָב֙ הָעָ֥ם גְּשָׁמִ֔ים וְהָעֵ֣ת וְאֵ֥ין כֹּ֖חַ לַעֲמ֣וֹד בַּח֑וּץ לֹֽא־ וְהַמְּלָאכָ֗ה אֶחָד֙ וְלֹ֣א לִשְׁנַ֔יִם לְי֤וֹם כִּֽי־ לִפְשֹׁ֖עַ הִרְבִּ֥ינוּ הַזֶּֽה׃ בַּדָּבָ֥ר ’ă·ḇāl rāḇ hā·‘ām gə·šā·mîm wə·hā·‘êṯ wə·’ên kō·aḥ la·‘ă·mō·wḏ ba·ḥūṣ lō- wə·ham·mə·lā·ḵāh ’e·ḥāḏ wə·lō liš·na·yim lə·yō·wm kî- lip̄·šō·a‘ hir·bî·nū haz·zeh bad·dā·ḇārWLC · 13

Let our leaders represent… the whole assembly. Then let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at an appointed time, together with the elders and judges… of each town…, until the fierce anger… of our God in this matter is turned away from us.”

שַׁלּ֥וּם אֲמַרְיָ֖ה יוֹסֵֽף׃ס šal·lūm ’ă·mar·yāh yō·w·sêp̄WLC · 42

[And] from the descendants of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel, and Benaiah.

מִבְּנֵ֖י נְב֑וֹ יְעִיאֵ֤ל מַתִּתְיָה֙ זָבָ֣ד זְבִינָ֔א יַדּוֹ וְיוֹאֵ֖ל בְּנָיָֽה׃ mib·bə·nê nə·ḇōw yə·‘î·’êl mat·tiṯ·yāh zā·ḇāḏ zə·ḇî·nā yad·dō wə·yō·w·’êl bə·nā·yāhWLC · 43

All these [men] had married foreign… women, and [some] of them had children by these wives.
