Chapter 4

The Work Ridiculed

Now when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he was furious and filled with indignation… He ridiculed… the Jews

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤎𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤈 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤏𐤎 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤏𐤂 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤌

וַיְהִ֞י כַּאֲשֶׁ֧ר סַנְבַלַּ֗ט שָׁמַ֣ע כִּֽי־ אֲנַ֤חְנוּ בוֹנִים֙ אֶת־ הַ֣חוֹמָ֔ה וַיִּ֣חַר ל֔וֹ וַיִּכְעַ֖ס הַרְבֵּ֑ה וַיַּלְעֵ֖ג עַל־ הַיְּהוּדִֽים׃ yə·hî ka·’ă·šer san·ḇal·laṭ šā·ma‘ kî- ’ă·naḥ·nū ḇō·w·nîm ’eṯ- ha·ḥō·w·māh way·yi·ḥar lōw way·yiḵ·‘as har·bêh way·yal·‘êḡ ‘al- hay·yə·hū·ḏîmWLC · 1

before his associates and the army of Samaria,… saying, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Can they restore [the wall] by themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? {Can they bring} these burnt stones back to life from the mounds of rubble?”

𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤔𐤓𐤅𐤐𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤏𐤓𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤐𐤓

לִפְנֵ֣י אֶחָ֗יו וְחֵיל֙ שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן וַיֹּ֕אמֶר וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ מָ֛ה הָאֲמֵלָלִ֖ים הַיְּהוּדִ֥ים עֹשִׂ֑ים הֲיַעַזְב֨וּ לָהֶ֤ם הֲיִזְבָּ֙חוּ֙ הַיְכַלּ֣וּ בַיּ֔וֹם וְהֵ֥מָּה שְׂרוּפֽוֹת׃ הָאֲבָנִ֛ים הַיְחַיּ֧וּ אֶת־ מֵעֲרֵמ֥וֹת הֶעָפָ֖ר lip̄·nê ’e·ḥāw wə·ḥêl šō·mə·rō·wn way·yō·mer way·yō·mer māh hā·’ă·mê·lā·lîm hay·yə·hū·ḏîm ‘ō·śîm hă·ya·‘az·ḇū lā·hem hă·yiz·bā·ḥū hay·ḵal·lū ḇay·yō·wm wə·hêm·māh śə·rū·p̄ō·wṯ hā·’ă·ḇā·nîm hay·ḥay·yū ’eṯ- mê·‘ă·rê·mō·wṯ he·‘ā·p̄ārWLC · 2

Then Tobiah the Ammonite, who was beside him, said, “If even a fox were to climb up on what they are building, it would break down their wall of stones!”

𐤅𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤑𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤂𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤑 𐤇𐤅𐤌𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌𐤐

וְטוֹבִיָּ֥ה הָעַמֹּנִ֖י אֶצְל֑וֹ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אִם־ גַּ֚ם שׁוּעָ֔ל יַעֲלֶ֣ה אֲשֶׁר־ הֵ֣ם בּוֹנִ֔ים וּפָרַ֖ץ חוֹמַ֥ת אַבְנֵיהֶֽם׃פ wə·ṭō·w·ḇî·yāh hā·‘am·mō·nî ’eṣ·lōw way·yō·mer ’im- gam šū·‘āl ya·‘ă·leh ’ă·šer- hêm bō·w·nîm ū·p̄ā·raṣ ḥō·w·maṯ ’aḇ·nê·hemWLC · 3

Hear us, O God, for we are despised. Turn their scorn back upon their own heads, and let them be taken as plunder to a land of captivity.

𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤅𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤁 𐤇𐤓𐤐𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤍𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤆𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤄

שְׁמַ֤ע אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ כִּֽי־ הָיִ֣ינוּ בוּזָ֔ה וְהָשֵׁ֥ב חֶרְפָּתָ֖ם אֶל־ רֹאשָׁ֑ם וּתְנֵ֥ם לְבִזָּ֖ה בְּאֶ֥רֶץ שִׁבְיָֽה׃ šə·ma‘ ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū kî- hā·yî·nū ḇū·zāh wə·hā·šêḇ ḥer·pā·ṯām ’el- rō·šām ū·ṯə·nêm lə·ḇiz·zāh bə·’e·reṣ šiḇ·yāhWLC · 4

Do not cover up… their iniquity or let their sin be blotted out from Your sight,… for they have provoked… the builders.

𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤊𐤎 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤕𐤌𐤇𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤏𐤉𐤎𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤂𐤃 𐤄𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤉𐤌

וְאַל־ תְּכַס֙ עַל־ עֲוֺנָ֔ם וְחַטָּאתָ֖ם תִּמָּחֶ֑ה מִלְּפָנֶ֣יךָ אַל־ כִּ֥י הִכְעִ֖יסוּ לְנֶ֥גֶד הַבּוֹנִֽים׃ wə·’al- tə·ḵas ‘al- ‘ă·wō·nām wə·ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯām tim·mā·ḥeh mil·lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā ’al- kî hiḵ·‘î·sū lə·ne·ḡeḏ hab·bō·w·nîmWLC · 5

So we rebuilt the wall until all [of it] was joined together up to half its [height], for the people had a mind to work.

𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤃 𐤇𐤑𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤁 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕𐤐

וַנִּבְנֶה֙ אֶת־ הַ֣חוֹמָ֔ה כָּל־ הַחוֹמָ֖ה וַתִּקָּשֵׁ֥ר עַד־ חֶצְיָ֑הּ לָעָ֖ם וַיְהִ֧י לֵ֦ב לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃פ wan·niḇ·neh ’eṯ- ha·ḥō·w·māh kāl- ha·ḥō·w·māh wat·tiq·qā·šêr ‘aḏ- ḥeṣ·yāh lā·‘ām way·hî lêḇ la·‘ă·śō·wṯWLC · 6

  • When Sanballat and Tobiah, together with the Arabs, Ammonites, and Ashdodites, heard that the repair to the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that… the gaps were being closed, they were furious -,

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤎𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤈 𐤅𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤃𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤊𐤄 𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤕𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤋𐤅 𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤎𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤃

וַיְהִ֣י כַאֲשֶׁ֣ר סַנְבַלַּ֡ט וְ֠טוֹבִיָּה וְהָעַרְבִ֨ים וְהָעַמֹּנִ֜ים וְהָאַשְׁדּוֹדִ֗ים שָׁמַ֣ע כִּֽי־ אֲרוּכָה֙ לְחֹמ֣וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם עָלְתָ֤ה כִּי־ הֵחֵ֥לּוּ הַפְּרֻצִ֖ים לְהִסָּתֵ֑ם וַיִּ֥חַר לָהֶ֖ם מְאֹֽד׃ way·hî ḵa·’ă·šer san·ḇal·laṭ wə·ṭō·w·ḇî·yāh wə·hā·‘ar·ḇîm wə·hā·‘am·mō·nîm wə·hā·’aš·dō·w·ḏîm šā·ma‘ kî- ’ă·rū·ḵāh lə·ḥō·mō·wṯ yə·rū·šā·lim ‘ā·lə·ṯāh kî- hê·ḥêl·lū hap·pə·ru·ṣîm lə·his·sā·ṯêm way·yi·ḥar lā·hem mə·’ōḏWLC · 7

and all of them conspired… to come and fight against Jerusalem and create a hindrance.

𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤔𐤓𐤅 𐤉𐤇𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤅 𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤄

כֻלָּם֙ וַיִּקְשְׁר֤וּ יַחְדָּ֔ו לָב֖וֹא לְהִלָּחֵ֣ם בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְלַעֲשׂ֥וֹת ל֖וֹ תּוֹעָֽה׃ ḵul·lām way·yiq·šə·rū yaḥ·dāw lā·ḇō·w lə·hil·lā·ḥêm bî·rū·šā·lim wə·la·‘ă·śō·wṯ lōw tō·w·‘āhWLC · 8

Discouragement Overcome

So we prayed to our God and posted a guard against them… day and night.

𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄

וַנִּתְפַּלֵּ֖ל אֶל־ אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ וַנַּעֲמִ֨יד מִשְׁמָ֧ר עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם מִפְּנֵיהֶֽם׃ יוֹמָ֥ם וָלַ֖יְלָה wan·niṯ·pal·lêl ’el- ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū wan·na·‘ă·mîḏ miš·mār ‘ă·lê·hem mip·pə·nê·hem yō·w·mām wā·lay·lāhWLC · 9

Meanwhile, the people of Judah said: “The strength of the laborer fails, and there is so much rubble that we will never be able to rebuild the wall.”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤇 𐤄𐤎𐤁𐤋 𐤊𐤔𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤌𐤄

יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר כֹּ֣חַ הַסַּבָּ֔ל כָּשַׁל֙ הַרְבֵּ֑ה וְהֶעָפָ֖ר וַאֲנַ֙חְנוּ֙ לֹ֣א נוּכַ֔ל לִבְנ֖וֹת בַּחוֹמָֽה׃ yə·hū·ḏāh way·yō·mer kō·aḥ has·sab·bāl kā·šal har·bêh wə·he·‘ā·p̄ār wa·’ă·naḥ·nū lō nū·ḵal liḇ·nō·wṯ ba·ḥō·w·māhWLC · 10

And our enemies said, “Before they know [or] see [a thing], we will come into their midst, kill them, and put an end to the work.”

𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤍𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤄

צָרֵ֗ינוּ וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ עַ֛ד אֲשֶׁר־ יֵדְעוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א יִרְא֔וּ לֹ֤א נָב֥וֹא אֶל־ תּוֹכָ֖ם וַהֲרַגְנ֑וּם וְהִשְׁבַּ֖תְנוּ אֶת־ הַמְּלָאכָֽה׃ ṣā·rê·nū way·yō·mə·rū ‘aḏ ’ă·šer- yê·ḏə·‘ū wə·lō yir·’ū lō nā·ḇō·w ’el- tō·w·ḵām wa·hă·raḡ·nūm wə·hiš·baṯ·nū ’eṯ- ham·mə·lā·ḵāhWLC · 11

At that time the Jews who lived nearby came and told us ten times [over], “Wherever… you turn, they will attack us.”

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤑𐤋𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤐𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅

וַֽיְהִי֙ כַּאֲשֶׁר־ הַיְּהוּדִ֔ים הַיֹּשְׁבִ֖ים אֶצְלָ֑ם בָּ֣אוּ וַיֹּ֤אמְרוּ לָ֙נוּ֙ עֶ֣שֶׂר פְּעָמִ֔ים מִכָּל־ הַמְּקֹמ֖וֹת אֲשֶׁר־ תָּשׁ֥וּבוּ עָלֵֽינוּ׃ way·hî ka·’ă·šer- hay·yə·hū·ḏîm hay·yō·šə·ḇîm ’eṣ·lām bā·’ū way·yō·mə·rū lā·nū ‘e·śer pə·‘ā·mîm mik·kāl ham·mə·qō·mō·wṯ ’ă·šer- tā·šū·ḇū ‘ā·lê·nūWLC · 12

So I stationed [men] behind the lowest sections of the wall, at the vulnerable areas. I stationed them by families with their swords, spears, and bows.

𐤅𐤀𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤑𐤇𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤓𐤌𐤇𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤒𐤔𐤕𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌

וָֽאַעֲמִ֞יד מֵאַחֲרֵ֥י מִֽתַּחְתִּיּ֧וֹת לַמָּק֛וֹם לַחוֹמָ֖ה בַּצְּחִחִיִּים וָֽאַעֲמִ֤יד אֶת־ הָעָם֙ לְמִשְׁפָּח֔וֹת עִם־ חַרְבֹתֵיהֶ֛ם רָמְחֵיהֶ֖ם וְקַשְּׁתֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ wā·’a·‘ă·mîḏ mê·’a·ḥă·rê mit·taḥ·tî·yō·wṯ lam·mā·qō·wm la·ḥō·w·māh baṣ·ṣə·ḥi·ḥī·yīm wā·’a·‘ă·mîḏ ’eṯ- hā·‘ām lə·miš·pā·ḥō·wṯ ‘im- ḥar·ḇō·ṯê·hem rā·mə·ḥê·hem wə·qaš·šə·ṯō·ṯê·hemWLC · 13

After I had made an inspection, I stood up and said to the nobles,… the officials,… and the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”

𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤎𐤂𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤕𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤅𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌𐤐

וָאֵ֣רֶא וָאָק֗וּם וָאֹמַ֞ר אֶל־ הַחֹרִ֤ים וְאֶל־ הַסְּגָנִים֙ וְאֶל־ יֶ֣תֶר הָעָ֔ם אַל־ תִּֽירְא֖וּ מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם אֶת־ זְכֹ֔רוּ אֲדֹנָ֞י הַגָּד֤וֹל וְהַנּוֹרָא֙ וְהִֽלָּחֲמ֗וּ עַל־ אֲחֵיכֶם֙ בְּנֵיכֶ֣ם וּבְנֹתֵיכֶ֔ם נְשֵׁיכֶ֖ם וּבָתֵּיכֶֽם׃פ wā·’ê·re wā·’ā·qūm wā·’ō·mar ’el- ha·ḥō·rîm wə·’el- has·sə·ḡā·nîm wə·’el- ye·ṯer hā·‘ām ’al- tî·rə·’ū mip·pə·nê·hem ’eṯ- zə·ḵō·rū ’ă·ḏō·nāy hag·gā·ḏō·wl wə·han·nō·w·rā wə·hil·lā·ḥă·mū ‘al- ’ă·ḥê·ḵem bə·nê·ḵem ū·ḇə·nō·ṯê·ḵem nə·šê·ḵem ū·ḇāt·tê·ḵemWLC · 14

  • When our enemies heard that we were aware of their scheme and that God had frustrated it, each of us returned to his own work on the wall.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤅𐤃𐤏 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤑𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤓 𐤊𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤌𐤄

וַיְהִ֞י כַּֽאֲשֶׁר־ אוֹיְבֵ֙ינוּ֙ שָׁמְע֤וּ כִּי־ נ֣וֹדַֽע לָ֔נוּ עֲצָתָ֑ם הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־ וַיָּ֥פֶר כֻּלָּ֙נוּ֙ וַנָּשׁוּב אֶל־ אִ֖ישׁ מְלַאכְתּֽוֹ׃ אֶל־ הַ֣חוֹמָ֔ה way·hî ka·’ă·šer- ’ō·wy·ḇê·nū šā·mə·‘ū kî- nō·w·ḏa‘ lā·nū ‘ă·ṣā·ṯām hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·yā·p̄er kul·lā·nū wan·nå̄·šūḇ ’el- ’îš mə·laḵ·tōw ’el- ha·ḥō·w·māhWLC · 15

And from that day on, half of my servants did the work while the other half held spears, shields, bows, and armor. The officers [stationed themselves] behind all the people of Judah

וַיְהִ֣י׀ מִן־ הַה֗וּא הַיּ֣וֹם חֲצִ֣י נְעָרַי֮ עֹשִׂ֣ים בַּמְּלָאכָה֒ וְחֶצְיָ֗ם מַחֲזִיקִים֙ וְהָרְמָחִ֣ים הַמָּגִנִּ֔ים וְהַקְּשָׁת֖וֹת וְהַשִּׁרְיֹנִ֑ים וְהַ֨שָּׂרִ֔ים אַחֲרֵ֖י כָּל־ בֵּ֥ית יְהוּדָֽה׃ way·hî min- ha·hū hay·yō·wm ḥă·ṣî nə·‘ā·ray ‘ō·śîm bam·mə·lā·ḵāh wə·ḥeṣ·yām ma·ḥă·zî·qîm wə·hā·rə·mā·ḥîm ham·mā·ḡin·nîm wə·haq·qə·šā·ṯō·wṯ wə·haš·šir·yō·nîm wə·haś·śā·rîm ’a·ḥă·rê kāl- bêṯ yə·hū·ḏāhWLC · 16

who were rebuilding the wall. The laborers who carried materials… worked… with one hand and held a weapon with the other.

הַבּוֹנִ֧ים בַּחוֹמָ֛ה וְהַנֹּשְׂאִ֥ים בַּסֶּ֖בֶל עֹמְשִׂ֑ים עֹשֶׂ֣ה בַמְּלָאכָ֔ה בְּאַחַ֤ת יָדוֹ֙ מַחֲזֶ֥קֶת הַשָּֽׁלַח׃ וְאַחַ֖ת hab·bō·w·nîm ba·ḥō·w·māh wə·han·nō·śə·’îm bas·se·ḇel ‘ō·mə·śîm ‘ō·śeh ḇam·mə·lā·ḵāh bə·’a·ḥaṯ yā·ḏōw ma·ḥă·ze·qeṯ haš·šā·laḥ wə·’a·ḥaṯWLC · 17

And each of the builders worked with his sword strapped at his side. But the trumpeter… stayed beside me.

אִ֥ישׁ וְהַ֨בּוֹנִ֔ים וּבוֹנִ֑ים חַרְבּ֛וֹ אֲסוּרִ֥ים עַל־ מָתְנָ֖יו וְהַתּוֹקֵ֥עַ בַּשּׁוֹפָ֖ר אֶצְלִֽי׃ ’îš wə·hab·bō·w·nîm ū·ḇō·w·nîm ḥar·bōw ’ă·sū·rîm ‘al- mā·ṯə·nāw wə·hat·tō·w·qê·a‘ baš·šō·w·p̄ār ’eṣ·lîWLC · 18

Then I said to the nobles,… the officials,… and the rest of the people: “The work [is] great and extensive, and we are spread out far from one another along the wall.

וָאֹמַ֞ר אֶל־ הַחֹרִ֤ים וְאֶל־ הַסְּגָנִים֙ וְאֶל־ יֶ֣תֶר הָעָ֔ם הַמְּלָאכָ֥ה הַרְבֵּ֖ה וּרְחָבָ֑ה וַאֲנַ֗חְנוּ נִפְרָדִים֙ רְחוֹקִ֖ים אִ֥ישׁ מֵאָחִֽיו׃ עַל־ הַ֣חוֹמָ֔ה wā·’ō·mar ’el- ha·ḥō·rîm wə·’el- has·sə·ḡā·nîm wə·’el- ye·ṯer hā·‘ām ham·mə·lā·ḵāh har·bêh ū·rə·ḥā·ḇāh wa·’ă·naḥ·nū nip̄·rā·ḏîm rə·ḥō·w·qîm ’îš mê·’ā·ḥîw ‘al- ha·ḥō·w·māhWLC · 19

Wherever you hear the sound of the horn, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us!”

בִּמְק֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֤ר תִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ אֶת־ ק֣וֹל הַשּׁוֹפָ֔ר תִּקָּבְצ֣וּ אֵלֵ֑ינוּ שָׁ֖מָּה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ יִלָּ֥חֶם לָֽנוּ׃ bim·qō·wm ’ă·šer tiš·mə·‘ū ’eṯ- qō·wl haš·šō·w·p̄ār tiq·qā·ḇə·ṣū ’ê·lê·nū šām·māh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū yil·lā·ḥem lā·nūWLC · 20

So we continued the work, while half of [the men] held spears from the break of dawn until the stars came out.

וַאֲנַ֖חְנוּ עֹשִׂ֣ים בַּמְּלָאכָ֑ה וְחֶצְיָ֗ם מַחֲזִיקִים֙ בָּֽרְמָחִ֔ים מֵעֲל֣וֹת הַשַּׁ֔חַר עַ֖ד הַכּוֹכָבִֽים׃ צֵ֥את wa·’ă·naḥ·nū ‘ō·śîm bam·mə·lā·ḵāh wə·ḥeṣ·yām ma·ḥă·zî·qîm bā·rə·mā·ḥîm mê·‘ă·lō·wṯ haš·ša·ḥar ‘aḏ hak·kō·w·ḵā·ḇîm ṣêṯWLC · 21

At that time I also said to the people, “Let every man and his servant spend the night inside Jerusalem, so that they can stand guard by night and work by day.”

הַהִיא֙ בָּעֵ֤ת גַּ֣ם אָמַ֣רְתִּי לָעָ֔ם אִ֣ישׁ וְנַעֲר֔וֹ יָלִ֖ינוּ בְּת֣וֹךְ יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְהָֽיוּ־ לָ֧נוּ מִשְׁמָ֖ר הַלַּ֛יְלָה מְלָאכָֽה׃ וְהַיּ֥וֹם ha·hî bā·‘êṯ gam ’ā·mar·tî lā·‘ām ’îš wə·na·‘ă·rōw yā·lî·nū bə·ṯō·wḵ yə·rū·šā·lim wə·hā·yū- lā·nū miš·mār hal·lay·lāh mə·lā·ḵāh wə·hay·yō·wmWLC · 22

So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants… nor the guards with me… changed out of our clothes; each carried his weapon, [even to go] for water.
