Chapter 4

Mordecai Appeals to Esther

When Mordecai learned of all that had happened, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the middle of the city, wailing… loudly and bitterly.

𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤃𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤓𐤃𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤁𐤔 𐤔𐤒 𐤅𐤀𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤏𐤒 𐤆𐤏𐤒𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤄

וּמָרְדֳּכַ֗י יָדַע֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נַעֲשָׂ֔ה מָרְדֳּכַי֙ אֶת־ וַיִּקְרַ֤ע בְּגָדָ֔יו וַיִּלְבַּ֥שׁ שַׂ֖ק וָאֵ֑פֶר וַיֵּצֵא֙ בְּת֣וֹךְ הָעִ֔יר וַיִּזְעַ֛ק זְעָקָ֥ה גְדֹלָ֖ה וּמָרָֽה׃ ū·mā·rə·do·ḵay yā·ḏa‘ ’eṯ- kāl- ’ă·šer na·‘ă·śāh mā·rə·do·ḵay ’eṯ- way·yiq·ra‘ bə·ḡā·ḏāw way·yil·baš śaq wā·’ê·p̄er way·yê·ṣê bə·ṯō·wḵ hā·‘îr way·yiz·‘aq zə·‘ā·qāh ḡə·ḏō·lāh ū·mā·rāhWLC · 1

But he went only as… far as the king’s gate, because the law prohibited anyone wearing sackcloth from entering… [that] gate.

וַיָּב֕וֹא עַ֖ד לִפְנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ שַֽׁעַר־ כִּ֣י אֵ֥ין בִּלְב֥וּשׁ שָֽׂק׃ לָב֛וֹא אֶל־ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ שַׁ֥עַר way·yā·ḇō·w ‘aḏ lip̄·nê ham·me·leḵ ša·‘ar- kî ’ên bil·ḇūš śāq lā·ḇō·w ’el- ham·me·leḵ ša·‘arWLC · 2

In every province… to which the king’s command and edict came, there was great mourning among the Jews. They fasted, wept, and lamented, and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

וּבְכָל־ מְדִינָ֣ה וּמְדִינָ֗ה מְקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ דְּבַר־ וְדָתוֹ֙ מַגִּ֔יעַ גָּדוֹל֙ אֵ֤בֶל לַיְּהוּדִ֔ים וְצ֥וֹם וּבְכִ֖י וּמִסְפֵּ֑ד לָֽרַבִּֽים׃ יֻצַּ֖ע שַׂ֣ק וָאֵ֔פֶר ū·ḇə·ḵāl mə·ḏî·nāh ū·mə·ḏî·nāh mə·qō·wm ’ă·šer ham·me·leḵ də·ḇar- wə·ḏā·ṯōw mag·gî·a‘ gā·ḏō·wl ’ê·ḇel lay·yə·hū·ḏîm wə·ṣō·wm ū·ḇə·ḵî ū·mis·pêḏ lā·rab·bîm yuṣ·ṣa‘ śaq wā·’ê·p̄erWLC · 3

When Esther’s maidens and eunuchs came and told her [about Mordecai], the queen was overcome with distress… She sent clothes for Mordecai to wear instead of his sackcloth,… but he would not accept them.

Then Esther summoned Hathach, one of the king’s eunuchs appointed to her, and she dispatched him to Mordecai to learn what was troubling him… and why…

So Hathach went out to Mordecai in the city square in front of the king’s gate,

𐤄𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤓𐤃𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤓𐤇𐤅𐤁 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤔𐤏𐤓

הֲתָ֖ךְ וַיֵּצֵ֥א אֶֽל־ מָרְדֳּכָ֑י אֶל־ הָעִ֔יר אֲשֶׁ֖ר רְח֣וֹב לִפְנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ שַֽׁעַר־ hă·ṯāḵ way·yê·ṣê ’el- mā·rə·do·ḵāy ’el- hā·‘îr ’ă·šer rə·ḥō·wḇ lip̄·nê ham·me·leḵ ša·‘ar-WLC · 6

and Mordecai told him all that had happened to him, including the exact amount of money that Haman had promised to pay into the royal treasury in order to destroy the Jews.

𐤌𐤓𐤃𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤃 𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤒𐤓𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤓𐤔𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤍 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤔𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤂𐤍𐤆𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤉𐤌

מָרְדֳּכַ֔י אֵ֖ת וַיַּגֶּד־ ל֣וֹ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר קָרָ֑הוּ וְאֵ֣ת׀ פָּרָשַׁ֣ת הַכֶּ֗סֶף אֲשֶׁ֨ר הָמָן֙ אָמַ֤ר לִ֠שְׁקוֹל עַל־ הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ גִּנְזֵ֥י לְאַבְּדָֽם׃ בַּיְּהוּדִיִּים mā·rə·do·ḵay ’êṯ way·yag·geḏ- lōw kāl- ’ă·šer qā·rā·hū wə·’êṯ pā·rā·šaṯ hak·ke·sep̄ ’ă·šer hā·mān ’ā·mar liš·qō·wl ‘al- ham·me·leḵ gin·zê lə·’ab·bə·ḏām bay·yə·hū·ḏī·yīmWLC · 7

  • Mordecai also gave [Hathach] a copy of the written decree issued in Susa for the destruction [of the Jews], to show and explain to Esther urging her to approach… the king, implore his favor and plead before him for her people.

𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤐𐤕𐤔𐤂𐤍 𐤊𐤕𐤁 𐤄𐤃𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤅𐤔𐤍 𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤄𐤂𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤑𐤅𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤄𐤕𐤇𐤍𐤍 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤒𐤔 𐤌𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤌𐤄

וְאֶת־ נִתַּ֨ן פַּתְשֶׁ֣גֶן כְּתָֽב־ הַ֠דָּת אֲשֶׁר־ נָ֣תַן ל֔וֹ בְּשׁוּשָׁ֤ן לְהַשְׁמִידָם֙ לְהַרְא֥וֹת וּלְהַגִּ֣יד אֶת־ אֶסְתֵּ֖ר לָ֑הּ וּלְצַוּ֣וֹת עָלֶ֗יהָ לָב֨וֹא אֶל־ הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ לְהִֽתְחַנֶּן־ ל֛וֹ וּלְבַקֵּ֥שׁ מִלְּפָנָ֖יו עַל־ עַמָּֽהּ׃ wə·’eṯ- nit·tan paṯ·še·ḡen kə·ṯāḇ- had·dāṯ ’ă·šer- nā·ṯan lōw bə·šū·šān lə·haš·mî·ḏām lə·har·’ō·wṯ ū·lə·hag·gîḏ ’eṯ- ’es·têr lāh ū·lə·ṣaw·wō·wṯ ‘ā·le·hā lā·ḇō·w ’el- ham·me·leḵ lə·hiṯ·ḥan·nen- lōw ū·lə·ḇaq·qêš mil·lə·p̄ā·nāw ‘al- ‘am·māhWLC · 8

So Hathach went back and relayed Mordecai’s response to Esther -.

𐤄𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤃 𐤌𐤓𐤃𐤊𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤀𐤕

הֲתָ֑ךְ וַיָּב֖וֹא וַיַּגֵּ֣ד מָרְדֳּכָֽי׃ דִּבְרֵ֥י לְאֶסְתֵּ֔ר אֵ֖ת hă·ṯāḵ way·yā·ḇō·w way·yag·gêḏ mā·rə·do·ḵāy diḇ·rê lə·’es·têr ’êṯWLC · 9

Then Esther spoke to Hathach and instructed him to tell Mordecai,

𐤀𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤑𐤅𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤓𐤃𐤊𐤉

אֶסְתֵּר֙ וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לַהֲתָ֔ךְ וַתְּצַוֵּ֖הוּ אֶֽל־ מָרְדֳּכָֽי׃ ’es·têr wat·tō·mer la·hă·ṯāḵ wat·tə·ṣaw·wê·hū ’el- mā·rə·do·ḵāyWLC · 10

“All the royal officials and the people of the king’s provinces know that one law applies to every man or woman who approaches… the king in the inner court without… being summoned— that he be put to death. Only if the king extends the gold scepter may that person live. But I have not been summoned to appear before the king for the past thirty days.”

כָּל־ הַמֶּ֡לֶךְ עַבְדֵ֣י וְעַם־ הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ מְדִינ֨וֹת יֽוֹדְעִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר אַחַ֤ת דָּתוֹ֙ כָּל־ אִ֣ישׁ וְאִשָּׁ֡ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר יָבֽוֹא־ אֶל־ הַמֶּלֶךְ֩ אֶל־ הַפְּנִימִ֜ית הֶחָצֵ֨ר אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־ יִקָּרֵ֗א לְהָמִ֔ית לְ֠בַד מֵאֲשֶׁ֨ר הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ אֶת־ יֽוֹשִׁיט־ ל֥וֹ הַזָּהָ֖ב שַׁרְבִ֥יט וְחָיָ֑ה וַאֲנִ֗י לֹ֤א נִקְרֵ֙אתי֙ לָב֣וֹא אֶל־ זֶ֖ה הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ שְׁלוֹשִׁ֥ים יֽוֹם׃ kāl- ham·me·leḵ ‘aḇ·ḏê wə·‘am- ham·me·leḵ mə·ḏî·nō·wṯ yō·wḏ·‘îm ’ă·šer ’a·ḥaṯ dā·ṯōw kāl- ’îš wə·’iš·šāh ’ă·šer yā·ḇō·w- ’el- ham·me·leḵ ’el- hap·pə·nî·mîṯ he·ḥā·ṣêr ’ă·šer lō- yiq·qā·rê lə·hā·mîṯ lə·ḇaḏ mê·’ă·šer ham·me·leḵ ’eṯ- yō·wō·šîṭ- lōw haz·zā·hāḇ šar·ḇîṭ wə·ḥā·yāh wa·’ă·nî lō niq·rē·ṯ lā·ḇō·w ’el- zeh ham·me·leḵ šə·lō·wō·šîm yō·wmWLC · 11

When Esther’s words were relayed to Mordecai -,

𐤀𐤎𐤕𐤓𐤐 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤓𐤃𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕

אֶסְתֵּֽר׃פ דִּבְרֵ֥י וַיַּגִּ֣ידוּ לְמָרְדֳּכָ֔י אֵ֖ת ’es·têr diḇ·rê way·yag·gî·ḏū lə·mā·rə·do·ḵāy ’êṯWLC · 12

he sent back to [her] this reply: “Do not imagine that [because] you are in the king’s palace you alone will escape the fate of all the Jews.

𐤌𐤓𐤃𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤃𐤌𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤊 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤈 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤌

מָרְדֳּכַ֖י וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ אֶסְתֵּ֑ר לְהָשִׁ֣יב אַל־ תְּדַמִּ֣י בְנַפְשֵׁ֔ךְ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ בֵּית־ לְהִמָּלֵ֥ט מִכָּל־ הַיְּהוּדִֽים׃ mā·rə·do·ḵay way·yō·mer ’el- ’es·têr lə·hā·šîḇ ’al- tə·ḏam·mî ḇə·nap̄·šêḵ ham·me·leḵ bêṯ- lə·him·mā·lêṭ mik·kāl hay·yə·hū·ḏîmWLC · 13

For if you remain silent… at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows if perhaps you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤔 𐤕𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤌𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤕𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤃𐤏 𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤂𐤏𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤏𐤕 𐤊𐤆𐤀𐤕

כִּ֣י אִם־ הַחֲרֵ֣שׁ תַּחֲרִישִׁי֮ הַזֹּאת֒ בָּעֵ֣ת רֶ֣וַח וְהַצָּלָ֞ה לַיְּהוּדִים֙ יַעֲמ֤וֹד אַחֵ֔ר מִמָּק֣וֹם וְאַ֥תְּ אָבִ֖יךְ וּבֵית־ תֹּאבֵ֑דוּ וּמִ֣י יוֹדֵ֔עַ אִם־ הִגַּ֖עַתְּ לַמַּלְכֽוּת׃ לְעֵ֣ת כָּזֹ֔את kî ’im- ha·ḥă·rêš ta·ḥă·rî·šî haz·zōṯ bā·‘êṯ re·waḥ wə·haṣ·ṣā·lāh lay·yə·hū·ḏîm ya·‘ă·mō·wḏ ’a·ḥêr mim·mā·qō·wm wə·’at ’ā·ḇîḵ ū·ḇêṯ- tō·ḇê·ḏū ū·mî yō·w·ḏê·a‘ ’im- hig·ga·‘at lam·mal·ḵūṯ lə·‘êṯ kā·zōṯWLC · 14

Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai:

𐤀𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤓𐤃𐤊𐤉

אֶסְתֵּ֖ר לְהָשִׁ֥יב וַתֹּ֥אמֶר אֶֽל־ מָרְדֳּכָֽי׃ ’es·têr lə·hā·šîḇ wat·tō·mer ’el- mā·rə·do·ḵāyWLC · 15

“Go and assemble all the Jews who can be found in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat… or drink for three days, night or day, and I and my maidens will fast as you do. After that, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish!
