Chapter 15

Eliphaz: Job Does Not Fear God

Then Eliphaz the Temanite… replied:

אֱלִיפַ֥ז הַֽתֵּימָנִ֗י וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ וַ֭יַּעַן ’ĕ·lî·p̄az hat·tê·mā·nî way·yō·mar way·ya·‘anWLC · 1

“Does a wise man answer with empty counsel or fill his belly with the hot east wind?

𐤄𐤇𐤊𐤌 𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤈𐤍𐤅 𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌

הֶֽחָכָ֗ם יַעֲנֶ֥ה ר֑וּחַ דַֽעַת־ וִֽימַלֵּ֖א בִּטְנֽוֹ׃ קָדִ֣ים he·ḥā·ḵām ya·‘ă·neh rū·aḥ ḏa·‘aṯ- wî·mal·lê biṭ·nōw qā·ḏîmWLC · 2

Should he argue with useless… words or speeches that serve no purpose

𐤄𐤅𐤊𐤇 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤎𐤊𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤋 𐤁𐤌

הוֹכֵ֣חַ לֹ֣א יִסְכּ֑וֹן בְּ֭דָבָר וּ֝מִלִּ֗ים לֹא־ יוֹעִ֥יל בָּֽם׃ hō·w·ḵê·aḥ lō yis·kō·wn bə·ḏā·ḇār ū·mil·lîm lō- yō·w·‘îl bāmWLC · 3

But you even undermine the fear [of God] and hinder meditation before Him.

𐤀𐤐 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤕𐤐𐤓 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤂𐤓𐤏 𐤔𐤉𐤇𐤄 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋

אַף־ אַ֭תָּה תָּפֵ֣ר יִרְאָ֑ה וְתִגְרַ֥ע שִׂ֝יחָ֗ה לִפְנֵי־ אֵֽל׃ ’ap̄- ’at·tāh tā·p̄êr yir·’āh wə·ṯiḡ·ra‘ śî·ḥāh lip̄·nê- ’êlWLC · 4

For your iniquity instructs your mouth, and you choose the language of the crafty.

𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤊 𐤉𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤐𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤌

כִּ֤י עֲוֺנְךָ֣ יְאַלֵּ֣ף פִ֑יךָ וְ֝תִבְחַ֗ר לְשׁ֣וֹן עֲרוּמִֽים׃ kî ‘ă·wō·nə·ḵā yə·’al·lêp̄ p̄î·ḵā wə·ṯiḇ·ḥar lə·šō·wn ‘ă·rū·mîmWLC · 5

Your own mouth, not mine, condemns you; your own lips testify against you.

פִ֣יךָ וְלֹא־ אָ֑נִי יַרְשִֽׁיעֲךָ֣ וּ֝שְׂפָתֶ֗יךָ יַעֲנוּ־ בָֽךְ׃ p̄î·ḵā wə·lō- ’ā·nî yar·šî·‘ă·ḵā ū·śə·p̄ā·ṯe·ḵā ya·‘ă·nū- ḇāḵWLC · 6

Were you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills?

הֲרִאישׁ֣וֹן אָ֭דָם תִּוָּלֵ֑ד חוֹלָֽלְתָּ׃ וְלִפְנֵ֖י גְבָע֣וֹת hă·ri·yō·šō·wn ’ā·ḏām tiw·wā·lêḏ ḥō·w·lā·lə·tā wə·lip̄·nê ḡə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯWLC · 7

Do you listen in on the council of God or limit wisdom to yourself?

𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤄𐤁𐤎𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤂𐤓𐤏 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊

תִּשְׁמָ֑ע הַבְס֣וֹד אֱל֣וֹהַ וְתִגְרַ֖ע חָכְמָֽה׃ אֵלֶ֣יךָ tiš·mā‘ haḇ·sō·wḏ ’ĕ·lō·w·ha wə·ṯiḡ·ra‘ ḥāḵ·māh ’ê·le·ḵāWLC · 8

What do you know that we do not…? What do you understand that is not clear to us…?

𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤃𐤏 𐤕𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤅𐤀

מַה־ יָּ֭דַעְתָּ וְלֹ֣א נֵדָ֑ע תָּ֝בִ֗ין וְֽלֹא־ עִמָּ֥נוּ הֽוּא׃ mah- yā·ḏa‘·tā wə·lō nê·ḏā‘ tā·ḇîn wə·lō- ‘im·mā·nū hūWLC · 9

Both the gray-haired and the aged are on our side— men much older… than your father.

גַּם־ שָׂ֣ב גַּם־ יָשִׁ֣ישׁ בָּ֑נוּ כַּבִּ֖יר יָמִֽים׃ מֵאָבִ֣יךָ gam- śāḇ gam- yā·šîš bā·nū kab·bîr yā·mîm mê·’ā·ḇî·ḵāWLC · 10

Are the consolations of God not enough for you, even words [spoken] gently to you?

תַּנְחֻמ֣וֹת אֵ֑ל הַמְעַ֣ט מִ֭מְּךָ וְ֝דָבָ֗ר לָאַ֥ט עִמָּֽךְ׃ tan·ḥu·mō·wṯ ’êl ham·‘aṭ mim·mə·ḵā wə·ḏā·ḇār lā·’aṭ ‘im·māḵWLC · 11

Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash,

𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤊 𐤉𐤒𐤇𐤊 𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤓𐤆𐤌𐤅𐤍

מַה־ לִבֶּ֑ךָ יִּקָּחֲךָ֥ וּֽמַה־ עֵינֶֽיךָ׃ יִּרְזְמ֥וּן mah- lib·be·ḵā yiq·qā·ḥă·ḵā ū·mah- ‘ê·ne·ḵā yir·zə·mūnWLC · 12

so that you turn your spirit against God and pour such words from your mouth?

𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤐𐤉𐤊

כִּֽי־ תָשִׁ֣יב רוּחֶ֑ךָ אֶל־ אֵ֣ל מִלִּֽין׃ וְהֹצֵ֖אתָ מִפִּ֣יךָ kî- ṯā·šîḇ rū·ḥe·ḵā ’el- ’êl mil·lîn wə·hō·ṣê·ṯā mip·pî·ḵāWLC · 13

What is man, that he should be pure, or one born of woman, that he should be righteous?

𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤅𐤔 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤆𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤋𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤑𐤃𐤒

מָֽה־ אֱנ֥וֹשׁ כִּֽי־ יִזְכֶּ֑ה יְל֣וּד אִשָּֽׁה׃ וְכִֽי־ יִ֝צְדַּ֗ק māh- ’ĕ·nō·wōš kî- yiz·keh yə·lūḏ ’iš·šāh wə·ḵî- yiṣ·daqWLC · 14

If God puts no trust in His holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in His eyes,

𐤄𐤍 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤆𐤊𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅

הֵ֣ן לֹ֣א יַאֲמִ֑ין בִּקְדֹשׁוֹ וְ֝שָׁמַ֗יִם לֹא־ זַכּ֥וּ בְעֵינָֽיו׃ hên lō ya·’ă·mîn biq·ḏō·šō wə·šā·ma·yim lō- zak·kū ḇə·‘ê·nāwWLC · 15

how much less… man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks injustice like water?

𐤀𐤐 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤍𐤕𐤏𐤁 𐤅𐤍𐤀𐤋𐤇 𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤊𐤌𐤉𐤌

אַ֭ף כִּֽי־ אִישׁ־ נִתְעָ֥ב וְֽנֶאֱלָ֑ח שֹׁתֶ֖ה עַוְלָֽה׃ כַמַּ֣יִם ’ap̄ kî- ’îš- niṯ·‘āḇ wə·ne·’ĕ·lāḥ šō·ṯeh ‘aw·lāh ḵam·ma·yimWLC · 16

17

Listen to me and I will inform you. I will describe what I have seen,

𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤅𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤆𐤄 𐤇𐤆𐤉𐤕𐤉

שְֽׁמַֽע־ לִ֑י אֲחַוְךָ֥ וַאֲסַפֵּֽרָה׃ וְזֶֽה־ חָ֝זִ֗יתִי šə·ma‘- lî ’ă·ḥaw·ḵā wa·’ă·sap·pê·rāh wə·zeh- ḥā·zî·ṯîWLC · 17

what was declared by wise men and was not concealed from their fathers,

𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤂𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤇𐤃𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌

אֲשֶׁר־ יַגִּ֑ידוּ חֲכָמִ֥ים וְלֹ֥א כִֽ֝חֲד֗וּ מֵאֲבוֹתָֽם׃ ’ă·šer- yag·gî·ḏū ḥă·ḵā·mîm wə·lō ḵi·ḥă·ḏū mê·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯāmWLC · 18

to whom alone the land was given when no foreigner passed among them.

𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤆𐤓 𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤌

לָהֶ֣ם לְ֭בַדָּם הָאָ֑רֶץ נִתְּנָ֣ה וְלֹא־ זָ֣ר עָ֖בַר בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ lā·hem lə·ḇad·dām hā·’ā·reṣ nit·tə·nāh wə·lō- zār ‘ā·ḇar bə·ṯō·w·ḵāmWLC · 19

20

A wicked man writhes in pain all his days; only a few years are reserved for the ruthless.

𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤌𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤋𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤑𐤐𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤑

רָ֭שָׁע מִתְחוֹלֵ֑ל כָּל־ ה֣וּא יְמֵ֣י וּמִסְפַּ֥ר שָׁ֝נִ֗ים נִצְפְּנ֥וּ לֶעָרִֽיץ׃ rā·šā‘ miṯ·ḥō·w·lêl kāl- hū yə·mê ū·mis·par šā·nîm niṣ·pə·nū le·‘ā·rîṣWLC · 20

21

Sounds of terror fill his ears; in his prosperity the destroyer attacks him.

𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤐𐤇𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤃𐤃 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤅

קוֹל־ פְּחָדִ֥ים בְּאָזְנָ֑יו בַּ֝שָּׁל֗וֹם שׁוֹדֵ֥ד יְבוֹאֶֽנּוּ׃ qō·wl- pə·ḥā·ḏîm bə·’ā·zə·nāw baš·šā·lō·wm šō·w·ḏêḏ yə·ḇō·w·’en·nūWLC · 21

22

vvv He despairs of his return from darkness; he is marked for the sword.

𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤉𐤍 𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤑𐤐𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤇𐤓𐤁

לֹא־ יַאֲמִ֣ין שׁ֭וּב מִנִּי־ חֹ֑שֶׁךְ ה֣וּא וְצָפוּ אֱלֵי־ חָֽרֶב׃ lō- ya·’ă·mîn šûb̲ min·nî- ḥō·šeḵ hū wə·ṣå̄·p̄ū ’ĕ·lê- ḥā·reḇWLC · 22

23

He wanders about as food for vultures; he knows… the day of darkness is at hand.

𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤍𐤃𐤃 𐤋𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤊𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤅

ה֣וּא נֹ֘דֵ֤ד לַלֶּ֣חֶם אַיֵּ֑ה יָדַ֓ע׀ כִּֽי־ נָכ֖וֹן יֽוֹם־ חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ בְּיָד֣וֹ hū nō·ḏêḏ lal·le·ḥem ’ay·yêh yā·ḏa‘ kî- nā·ḵō·wn yō·wm- ḥō·šeḵ bə·yā·ḏōwWLC · 23

Distress and anguish terrify him, overwhelming him like a king poised to attack.

𐤑𐤓 𐤅𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤒𐤄 𐤉𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤄𐤅 𐤕𐤕𐤒𐤐𐤄𐤅 𐤊𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤃 𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤃𐤅𐤓

צַ֣ר וּמְצוּקָ֑ה יְֽ֭בַעֲתֻהוּ תִּ֝תְקְפֵ֗הוּ כְּמֶ֤לֶךְ׀ עָתִ֬יד לַכִּידֽוֹר׃ ṣar ū·mə·ṣū·qāh yə·ḇa·‘ă·ṯu·hū tiṯ·qə·p̄ê·hū kə·me·leḵ ‘ā·ṯîḏ lak·kî·ḏō·wrWLC · 24

25

For he has stretched out his hand against God and has vaunted himself against the Almighty,

𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤈𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤕𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤃𐤉

כִּֽי־ נָטָ֣ה יָד֑וֹ אֶל־ אֵ֣ל יִתְגַּבָּֽר׃ וְאֶל־ שַׁ֝דַּ֗י kî- nā·ṭāh yā·ḏōw ’el- ’êl yiṯ·gab·bār wə·’e·lō·ša- šad·daiWLC · 25

26

rushing headlong at Him with a thick, studded shield.

𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤑 𐤁𐤑𐤅𐤀𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤉 𐤂𐤁𐤉 𐤌𐤂𐤍𐤉𐤅

יָר֣וּץ בְּצַוָּ֑אר אֵלָ֣יו בַּ֝עֲבִ֗י גַּבֵּ֥י מָֽגִנָּֽיו׃ yā·rūṣ bə·ṣaw·wār ’ê·lāw ba·‘ă·ḇî gab·bê mā·ḡin·nāwWLC · 26

27

Though his face is covered with fat and his waistline bulges with flesh…,

𐤊𐤉 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤎𐤄 𐤁𐤇𐤋𐤁𐤅 𐤊𐤎𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤐𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉

כִּֽי־ פָנָ֣יו כִסָּ֣ה בְּחֶלְבּ֑וֹ כָֽסֶל׃ וַיַּ֖עַשׂ פִּימָ֣ה עֲלֵי־ kî- p̄ā·nāw ḵis·sāh bə·ḥel·bōw ḵā·sel way·ya·‘aś pî·māh ‘ă·lê-WLC · 27

28

he will dwell in ruined cities, in abandoned… houses destined to become rubble.

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤅𐤍 𐤍𐤊𐤇𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤕𐤏𐤕𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤌

וַיִּשְׁכּ֤וֹן׀ נִכְחָד֗וֹת עָ֘רִ֤ים לֹא־ יֵ֣שְׁבוּ לָ֑מוֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר בָּ֭תִּים הִתְעַתְּד֣וּ לְגַלִּֽים׃ way·yiš·kō·wn niḵ·ḥā·ḏō·wṯ ‘ā·rîm lō- yê·šə·ḇū lā·mōw ’ă·šer bāt·tîm hiṯ·‘at·tə·ḏū lə·ḡal·lîmWLC · 28

He will no longer be rich; his wealth will not endure. His possessions will not overspread the land.

𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤍𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤈𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤑

לֹֽא־ יֶ֭עְשַׁר חֵיל֑וֹ וְלֹא־ יָק֣וּם מִנְלָֽם׃ וְלֹֽא־ יִטֶּ֖ה לָאָ֣רֶץ lō- ye‘·šar ḥê·lōw wə·lō- yā·qūm min·lām wə·lō- yiṭ·ṭeh lā·’ā·reṣWLC · 29

30

He will not escape from the darkness; the flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.

𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤎𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤔𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤕 𐤕𐤉𐤁𐤔 𐤉𐤍𐤒𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤐𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤅𐤓

לֹֽא־ יָס֨וּר׀ מִנִּי־ חֹ֗שֶׁךְ שַׁלְהָ֑בֶת תְּיַבֵּ֣שׁ יֹֽ֭נַקְתּוֹ בְּר֣וּחַ פִּֽיו׃ וְ֝יָס֗וּר lō- yā·sūr min·nî- ḥō·šeḵ šal·hā·ḇeṯ tə·yab·bêš yō·naq·tōw bə·rū·aḥ pîw wə·yā·sūrWLC · 30

31

Let him not deceive himself with trust in emptiness, for emptiness will be his reward.

𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤕𐤏𐤄 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤍 𐤁𐤔𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤅

אַל־ נִתְעָ֑ה יַאֲמֵ֣ן בַּשּׁוֹ כִּי־ שָׁ֝֗וְא תִּהְיֶ֥ה תְמוּרָתֽוֹ׃ ’al- niṯ·‘āh ya·’ă·mên baš·šō kî·šā- šā·wəʾ tih·yeh ṯə·mū·rā·ṯōwWLC · 31

32

It will be paid in full before his time, and his branch will not flourish.

𐤕𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤐𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤏𐤍𐤍𐤄

תִּמָּלֵ֑א בְּֽלֹא־ י֭וֹמוֹ וְ֝כִפָּת֗וֹ לֹ֣א רַעֲנָֽנָה׃ tim·mā·lê bə·lō- yō·w·mōw wə·ḵip·pā·ṯōw lō ra·‘ă·nā·nāhWLC · 32

33

He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree that sheds its blossoms.

𐤊𐤂𐤐𐤍 𐤉𐤇𐤌𐤎 𐤁𐤎𐤓𐤅 𐤊𐤆𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤊 𐤍𐤑𐤕𐤅

כַּגֶּ֣פֶן יַחְמֹ֣ס בִּסְר֑וֹ כַּ֝זַּ֗יִת וְיַשְׁלֵ֥ךְ נִצָּתֽוֹ׃ kag·ge·p̄en yaḥ·mōs bis·rōw kaz·za·yiṯ wə·yaš·lêḵ niṣ·ṣā·ṯōwWLC · 33

34

For the company of the godless [will be] barren, and fire will consume the tents of bribery.

כִּֽי־ עֲדַ֣ת חָנֵ֣ף גַּלְמ֑וּד וְ֝אֵ֗שׁ אָכְלָ֥ה אָֽהֳלֵי־ שֹֽׁחַד׃ kî- ‘ă·ḏaṯ ḥā·nêp̄ gal·mūḏ wə·’êš ’ā·ḵə·lāh ’ā·ho·lê- šō·ḥaḏWLC · 34

They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb is pregnant with deceit.”
