Chapter 21
Job: God Will Punish the Wicked

“Listen carefully… to my words; let this be your consolation [to me].
𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤏 𐤌𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤕𐤍𐤇𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌
שִׁמְע֣וּ שָׁ֭מוֹעַ מִלָּתִ֑י זֹ֝֗את וּתְהִי־ תַּנְח֥וּמֹֽתֵיכֶֽם׃ šim·‘ū šā·mô·aʿ mil·lā·ṯî zōṯ ū·ṯə·hî- tan·ḥū·mō·ṯê·ḵem — WLC · 2

Bear with me while I speak; then, after I have spoken, you may go on mocking.

שָׂ֭אוּנִי וְאָנֹכִ֣י אֲדַבֵּ֑ר וְאַחַ֖ר דַּבְּרִ֣י תַלְעִֽיג׃ śā·ʾû·nî wə·’ā·nō·ḵî ’ă·ḏab·bêr wə·’a·ḥar dab·bə·rî ṯal·‘îḡ — WLC · 3

Is my complaint… against a man? Then why should I not… be impatient?

הֶ֭אָנֹכִי שִׂיחִ֑י וְאִם־ לְאָדָ֣ם מַ֝דּ֗וּעַ לֹא־ רוּחִֽי׃ תִקְצַ֥ר he·’ā·nō·ḵî śî·ḥî wə·’im- lə·’ā·ḏām mad·dū·a‘ lō- rū·ḥî ṯiq·ṣar — WLC · 4

Look at me and be appalled; put your hand over your mouth.

When I remember, terror takes hold, and my body trembles in horror.

וְאִם־ זָכַ֥רְתִּי וְנִבְהָ֑לְתִּי וְאָחַ֥ז בְּ֝שָׂרִ֗י פַּלָּצֽוּת׃ wə·’im- zā·ḵar·tî wə·niḇ·hā·lə·tî wə·’ā·ḥaz bə·śā·rî pal·lā·ṣūṯ — WLC · 6

Why do the wicked live on, growing old and increasing in power?
𐤌𐤃𐤅𐤏 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤕𐤒𐤅 𐤂𐤌 𐤂𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤇𐤉𐤋
מַדּ֣וּעַ רְשָׁעִ֣ים יִחְי֑וּ עָ֝תְק֗וּ גַּם־ גָּ֥בְרוּ חָֽיִל׃ mad·dū·a‘ rə·šā·‘îm yiḥ·yū ‘ā·ṯə·qū gam- gā·ḇə·rū ḥā·yil — WLC · 7

Their descendants are established around them…, and their offspring before their eyes.
𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤌 𐤍𐤊𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤌𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤑𐤀𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌
זַרְעָ֤ם נָכ֣וֹן עִמָּ֑ם לִפְנֵיהֶ֣ם וְ֝צֶאֱצָאֵיהֶ֗ם לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃ zar·‘ām nā·ḵō·wn ‘im·mām lip̄·nê·hem wə·ṣe·’ĕ·ṣā·’ê·hem lə·‘ê·nê·hem — WLC · 8

Their homes are safe from fear; no rod of punishment from God [is] upon them.

בָּתֵּיהֶ֣ם שָׁל֣וֹם מִפָּ֑חַד וְלֹ֤א שֵׁ֖בֶט אֱל֣וֹהַּ עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ bāt·tê·hem šā·lō·wm mip·pā·ḥaḏ wə·lō šê·ḇeṭ ’ĕ·lō·w·ah ‘ă·lê·hem — WLC · 9

Their bulls breed without fail; their cows bear calves and do not miscarry.

שׁוֹר֣וֹ עִ֭בַּר וְלֹ֣א יַגְעִ֑ל פָּ֝רָת֗וֹ תְּפַלֵּ֥ט וְלֹ֣א תְשַׁכֵּֽל׃ šō·w·rōw ‘ib·bar wə·lō yaḡ·‘il pā·rā·ṯōw tə·p̄al·lêṭ wə·lō ṯə·šak·kêl — WLC · 10

They send forth their little ones like a flock; their children skip about,

יְשַׁלְּח֣וּ עֲוִילֵיהֶ֑ם כַ֭צֹּאן וְ֝יַלְדֵיהֶ֗ם יְרַקֵּדֽוּן׃ yə·šal·lə·ḥū ‘ă·wî·lê·hem ḵaṣ·ṣōn wə·yal·ḏê·hem yə·raq·qê·ḏūn — WLC · 11

singing to the tambourine and lyre and making merry at the sound of the flute.
𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤊𐤕𐤐 𐤅𐤊𐤍𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤅 𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤂𐤁
יִ֭שְׂאוּ כְּתֹ֣ף וְכִנּ֑וֹר וְ֝יִשְׂמְח֗וּ לְק֣וֹל עוּגָֽב׃ yiś·’ū kə·ṯōp̄ wə·ḵin·nō·wr wə·yiś·mə·ḥū lə·qō·wl ‘ū·ḡāḇ — WLC · 12

They spend their days in prosperity and go down to Sheol in peace.

יְבַלּוּ יְמֵיהֶ֑ם בַטּ֣וֹב יֵחָֽתּוּ׃ שְׁא֣וֹל וּ֝בְרֶ֗גַע yə·ḇal·lū yə·mê·hem ḇaṭ·ṭō·wḇ yê·ḥāt·tū šə·’ō·wl ū·ḇə·re·ḡa‘ — WLC · 13

Yet they say to God: ‘Leave us alone…! For we have no desire to know Your ways.

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לָ֭אֵל ס֣וּר מִמֶּ֑נּוּ לֹ֣א חָפָֽצְנוּ׃ וְדַ֥עַת דְּ֝רָכֶ֗יךָ way·yō·mə·rū lā·’êl sūr mim·men·nū lō ḥā·p̄ā·ṣə·nū wə·ḏa·‘aṯ də·rā·ḵe·ḵā — WLC · 14

Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him, and what would we gain if we pray to Him?’
𐤌𐤄 𐤔𐤃𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤍𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤐𐤂𐤏 𐤁𐤅
מַה־ שַׁדַּ֥י כִּֽי־ נַֽעַבְדֶ֑נּוּ וּמַה־ נּ֝וֹעִ֗יל כִּ֣י נִפְגַּע־ בּֽוֹ׃ mah- šad·day kî- na·‘aḇ·ḏen·nū ū·mah- nō·w·‘îl kî nip̄·ga‘- bōw — WLC · 15

Still, their prosperity [is] not in their own hands, so I stay far… from the counsel of the wicked.
𐤄𐤍 𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤓𐤇𐤒𐤄 𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤑𐤕 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌
הֵ֤ן טוּבָ֑ם לֹ֣א בְיָדָ֣ם רָ֣חֲקָה מֶֽנִּי׃ עֲצַ֥ת רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים hên ṭū·ḇām lō ḇə·yā·ḏām rā·ḥă·qāh men·nî ‘ă·ṣaṯ rə·šā·‘îm — WLC · 16

How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? Does disaster come upon them? Does [God,] in His anger, apportion destruction?
𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤍𐤓 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤊 𐤀𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤐𐤅 𐤉𐤇𐤋𐤒 𐤇𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤌
כַּמָּ֤ה׀ נֵר־ רְשָׁ֘עִ֤ים יִדְעָ֗ךְ אֵידָ֑ם וְיָבֹ֣א עָלֵ֣ימוֹ בְּאַפּֽוֹ׃ יְחַלֵּ֥ק חֲ֝בָלִ֗ים kam·māh nêr- rə·šā·‘îm yiḏ·‘āḵ ’ê·ḏām wə·yā·ḇō ‘ā·lê·mōw bə·’ap·pōw yə·ḥal·lêq ḥă·ḇā·lîm — WLC · 17

Are they like straw before the wind, like chaff swept away by a storm?
𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤕𐤁𐤍 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤊𐤌𐤑 𐤂𐤍𐤁𐤕𐤅 𐤎𐤅𐤐𐤄
יִהְי֗וּ כְּתֶ֥בֶן לִפְנֵי־ ר֑וּחַ וּ֝כְמֹ֗ץ גְּנָבַ֥תּוּ סוּפָֽה׃ yih·yū kə·ṯe·ḇen lip̄·nê- rū·aḥ ū·ḵə·mōṣ gə·nā·ḇat·tū sū·p̄āh — WLC · 18

[It is said that] God lays up one’s punishment for his children. Let God repay the man himself, so he will know it.

אֱל֗וֹהַּ יִצְפֹּן־ אוֹנ֑וֹ לְבָנָ֥יו יְשַׁלֵּ֖ם אֵלָ֣יו וְיֵדָֽע׃ ’ĕ·lō·w·ah yiṣ·pōn- ’ō·w·nōw lə·ḇā·nāw yə·šal·lêm ’ê·lāw wə·yê·ḏā‘ — WLC · 19
20
Let his eyes see his own destruction; let him drink [for himself] the wrath of the Almighty.
𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤊𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤇𐤌𐤕 𐤔𐤃𐤉
עֵינוֹ יִרְא֣וּ כִּיד֑וֹ יִשְׁתֶּֽה׃ וּמֵחֲמַ֖ת שַׁדַּ֣י ʿē·nō yir·’ū kî·ḏōw yiš·teh ū·mê·ḥă·maṯ šad·day — WLC · 20
21
For what does he care about his household after him, when the number of his months has run out?
𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤄 𐤇𐤐𐤑𐤅 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤉𐤅 𐤇𐤑𐤑𐤅
כִּ֤י מַה־ חֶפְצ֣וֹ בְּבֵית֣וֹ אַחֲרָ֑יו וּמִסְפַּ֖ר חֳדָשָׁ֣יו חֻצָּֽצוּ׃ kî mah- ḥep̄·ṣōw bə·ḇê·ṯōw ’a·ḥă·rāw ū·mis·par ḥo·ḏā·šāw ḥuṣ·ṣā·ṣū — WLC · 21

Can anyone teach knowledge to God, since He judges those on high?

יְלַמֶּד־ דָּ֑עַת הַלְאֵ֥ל וְ֝ה֗וּא יִשְׁפּֽוֹט׃ רָמִ֥ים yə·lam·meḏ- dā·‘aṯ hal·’êl wə·hū yiš·pō·wṭ rā·mîm — WLC · 22

One man dies full of vigor…, completely secure and at ease.
𐤆𐤄 𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤑𐤌 𐤕𐤌𐤅 𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤔𐤋𐤀𐤍𐤍 𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤅
זֶ֗ה יָ֭מוּת בְּעֶ֣צֶם תֻּמּ֑וֹ כֻּ֝לּ֗וֹ שַׁלְאֲנַ֥ן וְשָׁלֵֽיו׃ zeh yā·mūṯ bə·‘e·ṣem tum·mōw kul·lōw šal·’ă·nan wə·šā·lêw — WLC · 23
24
His body is well nourished…, and his bones [are] rich with marrow.
𐤏𐤈𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤅 𐤇𐤋𐤁 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤒𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤇
עֲ֭טִינָיו מָלְא֣וּ חָלָ֑ב עַצְמוֹתָ֣יו יְשֻׁקֶּֽה׃ וּמֹ֖חַ ‘ă·ṭî·nāw mā·lə·’ū ḥā·lāḇ ‘aṣ·mō·w·ṯāw yə·šuq·qeh ū·mō·aḥ — WLC · 24
25
Yet another man dies in the bitterness of his soul, having never tasted prosperity.
𐤅𐤆𐤄 𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤄
וְזֶ֗ה יָ֭מוּת מָרָ֑ה בְּנֶ֣פֶשׁ וְלֹֽא־ אָ֝כַ֗ל בַּטּוֹבָֽה׃ wə·zeh yā·mūṯ mā·rāh bə·ne·p̄eš wə·lō- ’ā·ḵal baṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh — WLC · 25
26
But together they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them [both].
𐤉𐤇𐤃 𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤁𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤓𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤊𐤎𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌
יַ֭חַד יִשְׁכָּ֑בוּ עַל־ עָפָ֣ר וְ֝רִמָּ֗ה תְּכַסֶּ֥ה עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ ya·ḥaḏ yiš·kā·ḇū ‘al- ‘ā·p̄ār wə·rim·māh tə·ḵas·seh ‘ă·lê·hem — WLC · 26
27
Behold, I know your thoughts full well, the schemes by which you would wrong me.

הֵ֣ן יָ֭דַעְתִּי מַחְשְׁבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם וּ֝מְזִמּ֗וֹת תַּחְמֹֽסוּ׃ עָלַ֥י hên yā·ḏa‘·tî maḥ·šə·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem ū·mə·zim·mō·wṯ taḥ·mō·sū ‘ā·lay — WLC · 27

For you say, ‘Where now is the nobleman’s house, and where are the tents in which the wicked dwell?’

כִּ֤י תֹֽאמְר֗וּ אַיֵּ֥ה נָדִ֑יב בֵית־ וְ֝אַיֵּ֗ה אֹ֤הֶל׀ רְשָׁעִֽים׃ מִשְׁכְּנ֬וֹת kî ṯō·mə·rū ’ay·yêh nā·ḏîḇ ḇêṯ- wə·’ay·yêh ’ō·hel rə·šā·‘îm miš·kə·nō·wṯ — WLC · 28

Have you never asked those who travel the roads? Do you not accept their reports?
𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤍𐤊𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤕𐤌
הֲלֹ֣א שְׁ֭אֶלְתֶּם ע֣וֹבְרֵי דָ֑רֶךְ לֹ֣א תְנַכֵּֽרוּ׃ וְ֝אֹתֹתָ֗ם hă·lō šə·ʾel·tem ‘ō·wḇ·rê ḏā·reḵ lō ṯə·nak·kê·rū wə·’ō·ṯō·ṯām — WLC · 29
30
Indeed, the evil man is spared from the day of calamity, delivered from the day of wrath.

כִּ֤י רָ֑ע יֵחָ֣שֶׂךְ לְי֣וֹם אֵ֭יד יוּבָֽלוּ׃ לְי֖וֹם עֲבָר֣וֹת kî rā‘ yê·ḥā·śeḵ lə·yō·wm ’êḏ yū·ḇā·lū lə·yō·wm ‘ă·ḇā·rō·wṯ — WLC · 30

Who denounces his behavior to his face? Who repays him for what he has done?
𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤂𐤉𐤃 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤏𐤔𐤄
מִֽי־ יַגִּ֣יד דַּרְכּ֑וֹ עַל־ פָּנָ֣יו מִ֣י יְשַׁלֶּם־ לֽוֹ׃ וְהֽוּא־ עָ֝שָׂ֗ה mî- yag·gîḏ dar·kōw ‘al- pā·nāw mî yə·šal·lem- lōw wə·hū- ‘ā·śāh — WLC · 31

He is carried to the grave, and watch is kept over his tomb.

וְ֭הוּא יוּבָ֑ל לִקְבָר֣וֹת יִשְׁקֽוֹד׃ וְֽעַל־ גָּדִ֥ישׁ wə·hū yū·ḇāl liq·ḇā·rō·wṯ yiš·qō·wḏ wə·‘al- gā·ḏîš — WLC · 32

The clods of the valley are sweet to him; everyone… follows behind him, and those before him are without number.

רִגְבֵ֫י נָ֥חַל מָֽתְקוּ־ ל֗וֹ כָּל־ אָדָ֣ם יִמְשׁ֑וֹךְ וְ֭אַחֲרָיו וּ֝לְפָנָ֗יו אֵ֣ין מִסְפָּֽר׃ riḡ·ḇê nā·ḥal mā·ṯə·qū- lōw kāl- ’ā·ḏām yim·šō·wḵ wə·’a·ḥă·rāw ū·lə·p̄ā·nāw ’ên mis·pār — WLC · 33

So how can you comfort me with empty words? For your answers remain [full of] falsehood.”
