Chapter 22

Eliphaz: Can a Man Be of Use to God?

Then Eliphaz the Temanite… replied:

𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤐𐤆 𐤄𐤕𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍

אֱלִיפַ֥ז הַֽתֵּמָנִ֗י וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ וַ֭יַּעַן ’ĕ·lî·p̄az hat·tê·mā·nî way·yō·mar way·ya·‘anWLC · 1

“Can a man be of use to God? Can even a wise man benefit Him?

𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤎𐤊𐤍 𐤄𐤋𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤉𐤋 𐤉𐤎𐤊𐤍 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤌𐤅

גָּ֑בֶר יִסְכָּן־ הַלְאֵ֥ל כִּֽי־ מַשְׂכִּֽיל׃ יִסְכֹּ֖ן עָלֵ֣ימוֹ gā·ḇer yis·kān- hal·’êl kî- maś·kîl yis·kōn ‘ā·lê·mōwWLC · 2

Does it delight the Almighty that you are righteous?… Does He profit if your ways are blameless?

𐤄𐤇𐤐𐤑 𐤋𐤔𐤃𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤁𐤑𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤊 𐤕𐤕𐤌

הַחֵ֣פֶץ לְ֭שַׁדַּי כִּ֣י תִצְדָּ֑ק וְאִם־ בֶּ֝֗צַע כִּֽי־ דְּרָכֶֽיךָ׃ תַתֵּ֥ם ha·ḥê·p̄eṣ lə·šad·day kî ṯiṣ·dāq wə·’im- be·ṣa‘ kî- də·rā·ḵe·ḵā ṯat·têmWLC · 3

Is it for your reverence that He rebukes you and enters into judgment against you?

𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤉𐤊𐤉𐤇𐤊 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤏𐤌𐤊

הֲֽ֭מִיִּרְאָ֣תְךָ יֹכִיחֶ֑ךָ יָב֥וֹא בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃ עִ֝מְּךָ֗ hă·mî·yir·’ā·ṯə·ḵā yō·ḵî·ḥe·ḵā yā·ḇō·w bam·miš·pāṭ ‘im·mə·ḵāWLC · 4

Is not your wickedness great? Are not your iniquities endless…?

𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤏𐤕𐤊 𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤒𐤑

הֲלֹ֣א רָעָֽתְךָ֣ רַבָּ֑ה לַעֲוֺנֹתֶֽיךָ׃ וְאֵֽין־ קֵ֝֗ץ hă·lō rā·‘ā·ṯə·ḵā rab·bāh la·‘ă·wō·nō·ṯe·ḵā wə·’ên- qêṣWLC · 5

6

For {you} needlessly demanded security from your brothers and deprived the naked of their clothing.

𐤊𐤉 𐤇𐤍𐤌 𐤕𐤇𐤁𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 𐤕𐤐𐤔𐤉𐤈 𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤉

כִּֽי־ חִנָּ֑ם תַחְבֹּ֣ל אַחֶ֣יךָ תַּפְשִֽׁיט׃ עֲרוּמִּ֣ים וּבִגְדֵ֖י kî- ḥin·nām ṯaḥ·bōl ’a·ḥe·ḵā tap̄·šîṭ ‘ă·rūm·mîm ū·ḇiḡ·ḏêWLC · 6

7

You gave no water to the weary and withheld food from the famished,

𐤕𐤔𐤒𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤉𐤐 𐤕𐤌𐤍𐤏 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤏𐤁

תַּשְׁקֶ֑ה לֹא־ מַ֭יִם עָיֵ֣ף תִּֽמְנַֽע־ לָֽחֶם׃ וּ֝מֵרָעֵ֗ב taš·qeh lō- ma·yim ‘ā·yêp̄ tim·na‘- lā·ḥem ū·mê·rā·‘êḇWLC · 7

while the land belonged to a mighty man, and a man of honor lived on it.

𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤆𐤓𐤅𐤏 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤄

הָאָ֑רֶץ זְ֭רוֹעַ ל֣וֹ וְאִ֣ישׁ וּנְשׂ֥וּא פָ֝נִ֗ים יֵ֣שֶׁב בָּֽהּ׃ hā·’ā·reṣ zə·rō·w·a‘ lōw wə·’îš ū·nə·śū p̄ā·nîm yê·šeḇ bāhWLC · 8

9

You sent widows away empty-handed, and the strength of the fatherless was crushed.

𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤕 𐤓𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤅𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤊𐤀

אַ֭לְמָנוֹת שִׁלַּ֣חְתָּ רֵיקָ֑ם וּזְרֹע֖וֹת יְתֹמִ֣ים יְדֻכָּֽא׃ ’al·mā·nō·wṯ šil·laḥ·tā rê·qām ū·zə·rō·‘ō·wṯ yə·ṯō·mîm yə·ḏuk·kāWLC · 9

10

Therefore… snares surround you, and sudden peril terrifies you;

𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤐𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤐𐤕𐤀𐤌 𐤐𐤇𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤄𐤋𐤊

עַל־ כֵּ֭ן פַחִ֑ים סְבִיבוֹתֶ֣יךָ פִּתְאֹֽם׃ פַּ֣חַד וִֽ֝יבַהֶלְךָ ‘al- kên p̄a·ḥîm sə·ḇî·ḇō·w·ṯe·ḵā piṯ·’ōm pa·ḥaḏ wî·ḇa·hel·ḵāWLC · 10

  • it is so dark you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you.

𐤀𐤅 𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤐𐤏𐤕 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤊𐤎𐤊

אוֹ־ חֹ֥שֶׁךְ לֹֽא־ תִרְאֶ֑ה וְֽשִׁפְעַת־ מַ֥יִם תְּכַסֶּֽךָּ׃ ’ōw- ḥō·šeḵ lō- ṯir·’eh wə·šip̄·‘aṯ- ma·yim tə·ḵas·se·kāWLC · 11

12

Is not God as high as the heavens? Look at the highest stars, how lofty they are!

𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤄 𐤂𐤁𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤊𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤌𐤅

הֲ‍ֽלֹא־ אֱ֭לוֹהַּ גֹּ֣בַהּ שָׁמָ֑יִם וּרְאֵ֤ה רֹ֖אשׁ כּוֹכָבִ֣ים כִּי־ רָֽמּוּ׃ hălō- ’ĕ·lō·w·ah gō·ḇah šā·mā·yim ū·rə·’êh rōš kō·w·ḵā·ḇîm kî- rām·mūWLC · 12

Yet you say: ‘What does God know? Does He judge through thick darkness?

𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤉𐤔𐤐𐤅𐤈 𐤄𐤁𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤓𐤐𐤋

וְֽ֭אָמַרְתָּ מַה־ אֵ֑ל יָּ֣דַֽע יִשְׁפּֽוֹט׃ הַבְעַ֖ד עֲרָפֶ֣ל wə·’ā·mar·tā mah- ’êl yā·ḏa‘ yiš·pō·wṭ haḇ·‘aḏ ‘ă·rā·p̄elWLC · 13

14

Thick clouds veil Him so He does not see us as He traverses the vault of heaven.

𐤏𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤉𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤇𐤅𐤂 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌

עָבִ֣ים סֵֽתֶר־ ל֭וֹ וְלֹ֣א יִרְאֶ֑ה יִתְהַלָּֽךְ׃ וְח֥וּג שָׁ֝מַ֗יִם ‘ā·ḇîm sê·ṯer- lōw wə·lō yir·’eh yiṯ·hal·lāḵ wə·ḥūḡ šā·ma·yimWLC · 14

15

Will you stay on the ancient path that wicked men have trod?

𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤇 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤅

תִּשְׁמֹ֑ר עוֹלָ֣ם הַאֹ֣רַח אֲשֶׁ֖ר אָֽוֶן׃ מְתֵי־ דָּרְכ֣וּ tiš·mōr ‘ō·w·lām ha·’ō·raḥ ’ă·šer ’ā·wen mə·ṯê- dā·rə·ḵūWLC · 15

16

They were snatched away before their time, and their foundations were swept away by a flood.

𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤒𐤌𐤈𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤎𐤅𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤒 𐤍𐤄𐤓

אֲשֶֽׁר־ קֻמְּט֥וּ וְלֹא־ עֵ֑ת יְסוֹדָֽם׃ יוּצַ֥ק נָ֝הָ֗ר ’ă·šer- qum·mə·ṭū wə·lō- ‘êṯ yə·sō·w·ḏām yū·ṣaq nā·hārWLC · 16

17

They said to God, ‘Depart from us. What can the Almighty do to us?’

𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤋 𐤎𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤔𐤃𐤉 𐤉𐤐𐤏𐤋 𐤋𐤌𐤅

הָאֹמְרִ֣ים לָ֭אֵל ס֣וּר מִמֶּ֑נּוּ וּמַה־ שַׁדַּ֣י יִּפְעַ֖ל לָֽמוֹ׃ hā·’ō·mə·rîm lā·’êl sūr mim·men·nū ū·mah- šad·day yip̄·‘al lā·mōwWLC · 17

18

But it was He who filled their houses with good things; so I stay far… from the counsel of the wicked.

𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤓𐤇𐤒𐤄 𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤑𐤕 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌

וְה֤וּא מִלֵּ֣א בָתֵּיהֶ֣ם ט֑וֹב רָ֣חֲקָה מֶֽנִּי׃ וַעֲצַ֥ת רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים wə·hū mil·lê ḇāt·tê·hem ṭō·wḇ rā·ḥă·qāh men·nî wa·‘ă·ṣaṯ rə·šā·‘îmWLC · 18

19

The righteous see [it] and are glad; the innocent mock them:

𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤒𐤉 𐤉𐤋𐤏𐤂 𐤋𐤌𐤅

צַדִּיקִ֣ים יִרְא֣וּ וְיִשְׂמָ֑חוּ וְ֝נָקִ֗י יִלְעַג־ לָֽמוֹ׃ ṣad·dî·qîm yir·’ū wə·yiś·mā·ḥū wə·nā·qî yil·‘aḡ- lā·mōwWLC · 19

20

‘Surely… our foes are destroyed, and fire has consumed their excess.’

𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤒𐤉𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤍𐤊𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤔 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤓𐤌

אִם־ לֹ֣א קִימָ֑נוּ נִכְחַ֣ד אֵֽשׁ׃ אָ֣כְלָה וְ֝יִתְרָ֗ם ’im- lō qî·mā·nū niḵ·ḥaḏ ’êš ’ā·ḵə·lāh wə·yiṯ·rāmWLC · 20

21

Reconcile now and be at peace with Him; thereby good will come to you.

𐤄𐤎𐤊𐤍 𐤍𐤀 𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤁𐤄𐤌 𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤄 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤊

הַסְכֶּן־ נָ֣א וּשְׁלם עִמּ֑וֹ בָּ֝הֶ֗ם טוֹבָֽה׃ תְּֽבוֹאַתְךָ֥ has·ken- nā ū·šə·lm ‘im·mōw bā·hem ṭō·w·ḇāh tə·ḇō·w·’aṯ·ḵāWLC · 21

22

Receive… instruction from His mouth, and lay up His words in your heart.

𐤒𐤇 𐤍𐤀 𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤌𐤐𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤊

קַח־ נָ֣א תּוֹרָ֑ה מִפִּ֣יו וְשִׂ֥ים אֲ֝מָרָ֗יו בִּלְבָבֶֽךָ׃ qaḥ- nā tō·w·rāh mip·pîw wə·śîm ’ă·mā·rāw bil·ḇā·ḇe·ḵāWLC · 22

23

If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored. If you remove injustice from your tents

𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤏𐤃 𐤔𐤃𐤉 𐤕𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤕𐤓𐤇𐤉𐤒 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤊

אִם־ תָּשׁ֣וּב עַד־ שַׁ֭דַּי תִּבָּנֶ֑ה תַּרְחִ֥יק עַ֝וְלָ֗ה מֵאָהֳלֶֽךָ׃ ’im- tā·šūḇ ‘a·ḏō·ša- šad·dai tib·bā·neh tar·ḥîq ‘aw·lāh mê·’ā·ho·le·ḵāWLC · 23

24

and consign your gold to the dust and the gold of Ophir to the stones of the ravines,

𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤑𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤁𐤑𐤅𐤓 𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤉𐤌

וְשִׁית־ בָּ֑צֶר עַל־ עָפָ֥ר אוֹפִֽיר׃ וּבְצ֖וּר נְחָלִ֣ים wə·šîṯ- bā·ṣer ‘al- ‘ā·p̄ār ’ō·w·p̄îr ū·ḇə·ṣūr nə·ḥā·lîmWLC · 24

25

then the Almighty will be your gold and the finest silver for you.

𐤔𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤐𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤋𐤊

שַׁדַּ֣י וְהָיָ֣ה בְּצָרֶ֑יךָ תּוֹעָפ֣וֹת וְכֶ֖סֶף לָֽךְ׃ šad·day wə·hā·yāh bə·ṣā·re·ḵā tō·w·‘ā·p̄ō·wṯ wə·ḵe·sep̄ lāḵWLC · 25

26

Surely then you will delight in the Almighty and lift up your face to God.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤆 𐤕𐤕𐤏𐤍𐤂 𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤄

כִּי־ אָ֭ז תִּתְעַנָּ֑ג עַל־ שַׁדַּ֣י וְתִשָּׂ֖א פָּנֶֽיךָ׃ אֶל־ אֱל֣וֹהַּ kî- ’āz tiṯ·‘an·nāḡ ‘al- šad·day wə·ṯiś·śā pā·ne·ḵā ’el- ’ĕ·lō·w·ahWLC · 26

27

You will pray to Him, and He will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows.

𐤕𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤊 𐤕𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤃𐤓𐤉𐤊

תַּעְתִּ֣יר אֵ֭לָיו וְיִשְׁמָעֶ֑ךָּ תְשַׁלֵּֽם׃ וּנְדָרֶ֥יךָ ta‘·tîr ’ê·lāw wə·yiš·mā·‘e·kā ṯə·šal·lêm ū·nə·ḏā·re·ḵāWLC · 27

28

Your decisions… will be carried out and light will shine on your ways.

𐤅𐤕𐤂𐤆𐤓 𐤀𐤅𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤍𐤂𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤊

וְֽתִגְזַר־ א֭וֹמֶר וְיָ֣קָם לָ֑ךְ אֽוֹר׃ נָ֣גַֽהּ וְעַל־ דְּ֝רָכֶ֗יךָ wə·ṯiḡ·zar- ’ō·w·mer wə·yā·qām lāḵ ’ō·wr nā·ḡah wə·‘al- də·rā·ḵe·ḵāWLC · 28

29

When men are brought low and you say, ‘Lift them up!’ then He will save the lowly…

𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤐𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤂𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤔𐤇 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤌

כִּֽי־ הִ֭שְׁפִּילוּ וַתֹּ֣אמֶר גֵּוָ֑ה יוֹשִֽׁעַ׃ וְשַׁ֖ח עֵינַ֣יִם kî- hiš·pî·lū wat·tō·mer gê·wāh yō·wō·ši·a‘ wə·šaḥ ‘ê·na·yimWLC · 29

30

He will deliver [even] [one who is] not innocent, rescuing him through the cleanness of your hands.”

𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤈 𐤀𐤉 𐤍𐤒𐤉 𐤅𐤍𐤌𐤋𐤈 𐤁𐤁𐤓 𐤊𐤐𐤉𐤊𐤐

יְֽמַלֵּ֥ט אִֽי־ נָקִ֑י וְ֝נִמְלַ֗ט בְּבֹ֣ר כַּפֶּֽיךָ׃פ yə·mal·lēṭ ’î- nā·qî wə·nim·laṭ bə·ḇōr kap·pe·ḵāWLC · 30
