Bildad: Man Cannot Be Righteous

Then Bildad the Shuhite… replied:

בִּלְדַּ֥ד הַשֻּׁחִ֗י וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ וַ֭יַּעַן bil·daḏ haš·šu·ḥî way·yō·mar way·ya·‘an — WLC · 1

“Dominion and awe belong to [God]; He establishes harmony in the heights of heaven.
𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤋 𐤅𐤐𐤇𐤃 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤅
הַמְשֵׁ֣ל וָפַ֣חַד עִמּ֑וֹ עֹשֶׂ֥ה שָׁ֝ל֗וֹם בִּמְרוֹמָֽיו׃ ham·šêl wā·p̄a·ḥaḏ ‘im·mōw ‘ō·śeh šā·lôm bim·rō·w·māw — WLC · 2

- Can His troops be numbered? On whom does His light not rise?

הֲיֵ֣שׁ לִגְדוּדָ֑יו מִ֭סְפָּר וְעַל־ מִ֝֗י אוֹרֵֽהוּ׃ לֹא־ יָק֥וּם hă·yêš liḡ·ḏū·ḏāw mis·pār wə·‘al- mî ’ō·w·rê·hū lō- yā·qūm — WLC · 3

How then can a man be just before God? How can one born of woman be pure?
𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤅𐤔 𐤉𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤋𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤆𐤊𐤄
וּמַה־ אֱנ֣וֹשׁ יִּצְדַּ֣ק עִם־ אֵ֑ל וּמַה־ יְל֣וּד אִשָּֽׁה׃ יִּ֝זְכֶּ֗ה ū·mah- ’ĕ·nō·wōš yiṣ·daq ‘im- ’êl ū·mah- yə·lūḏ ’iš·šāh yiz·keh — WLC · 4

If even the moon does not shine, and the stars are not pure in His sight,
𐤄𐤍 𐤏𐤃 𐤉𐤓𐤇 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤀𐤄𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤊𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤆𐤊𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅
הֵ֣ן עַד־ יָ֭רֵחַ וְלֹ֣א יַאֲהִ֑יל וְ֝כוֹכָבִ֗ים לֹא־ זַכּ֥וּ בְעֵינָֽיו׃ hên ‘aḏ- yā·rê·aḥ wə·lō ya·’ă·hîl wə·ḵō·w·ḵā·ḇîm lō- zak·kū ḇə·‘ê·nāw — WLC · 5

how much less… man, who is but a maggot, and the son of man, who is but a worm!”
