Job: Who Can Understand God’s Majesty?

Then Job… answered:

אִיּ֗וֹב וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ וַיַּ֥עַן ’î·yō·wḇ way·yō·mar way·ya·‘an — WLC · 1

“How you have helped the powerless… [and] saved the arm that is feeble…!
𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤇 𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏𐤕 𐤆𐤓𐤅𐤏 𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤆
מֶה־ עָזַ֥רְתָּ לְלֹא־ כֹ֑חַ ה֝וֹשַׁ֗עְתָּ זְר֣וֹעַ לֹא־ עֹֽז׃ meh- ‘ā·zar·tā lə·lō- ḵō·aḥ hō·wō·ša‘·tā zə·rō·w·a‘ lō- ‘ōz — WLC · 2

How you have counseled the unwise… [and] provided fully sound insight!

מַה־ יָּ֭עַצְתָּ לְלֹ֣א חָכְמָ֑ה הוֹדָֽעְתָּ׃ לָרֹ֥ב וְ֝תוּשִׁיָּ֗ה mah- yā·‘aṣ·tā lə·lō ḥāḵ·māh hō·w·ḏā·‘ə·tā lā·rōḇ wə·ṯū·šî·yāh — WLC · 3

To whom have you uttered these words? And whose spirit spoke through you?

אֶת־ מִ֭י הִגַּ֣דְתָּ מִלִּ֑ין מִ֝י וְנִשְׁמַת־ יָצְאָ֥ה מִמֶּֽךָּ׃ ’eṯ- mî hig·gaḏ·tā mil·lîn mî wə·niš·maṯ- yā·ṣə·’āh mim·me·kā — WLC · 4

The dead tremble— those beneath the waters and those who dwell in them.

הָרְפָאִ֥ים יְחוֹלָ֑לוּ מִתַּ֥חַת מַ֝֗יִם וְשֹׁכְנֵיהֶֽם׃ hā·rə·p̄ā·’îm yə·ḥō·w·lā·lū mit·ta·ḥaṯ ma·yim wə·šō·ḵə·nê·hem — WLC · 5

Sheol is naked before [God], and Abaddon has no covering.
𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤍𐤂𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤊𐤎𐤅𐤕
שְׁא֣וֹל עָר֣וֹם נֶגְדּ֑וֹ לָֽאֲבַדּֽוֹן׃ וְאֵ֥ין כְּ֝ס֗וּת šə·’ō·wl ‘ā·rō·wm neḡ·dōw lā·’ă·ḇad·dō·wn wə·’ên kə·sūṯ — WLC · 6

He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth upon nothing…
𐤍𐤈𐤄 𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤋 𐤕𐤄𐤅 𐤕𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤄
נֹטֶ֣ה צָפ֣וֹן עַל־ תֹּ֑הוּ תֹּ֥לֶה אֶ֝֗רֶץ עַל־ בְּלִי־ מָֽה׃ nō·ṭeh ṣā·p̄ō·wn ‘al- tō·hū tō·leh ’e·reṣ ‘al- bə·lî- māh — WLC · 7

He wraps up the waters in His clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their own weight.
𐤑𐤓𐤓 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤁𐤒𐤏 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤌
צֹרֵֽר־ מַ֥יִם בְּעָבָ֑יו עָנָ֣ן וְלֹא־ נִבְקַ֖ע תַּחְתָּֽם׃ ṣō·rêr- ma·yim bə·‘ā·ḇāw ‘ā·nān wə·lō- niḇ·qa‘ taḥ·tām — WLC · 8

He covers the face of the full moon, spreading over it His cloud.
𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤎𐤄 𐤐𐤓𐤔𐤆 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤍𐤍𐤅
מְאַחֵ֥ז פְּנֵי־ כִסֵּ֑ה פַּרְשֵׁ֖ז עָלָ֣יו עֲנָנֽוֹ׃ mə·’a·ḥêz pə·nê- ḵis·sêh par·šêz ‘ā·lāw ‘ă·nā·nōw — WLC · 9

He has inscribed a horizon on the face of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness.

חָ֭ג חֹֽק־ עַל־ פְּנֵי־ מָ֑יִם עַד־ תַּכְלִ֖ית עִם־ א֣וֹר חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ ḥāḡ ḥōq- ‘al- pə·nê- mā·yim ‘aḏ- taḵ·lîṯ ‘im- ’ō·wr ḥō·šeḵ — WLC · 10

The foundations of heaven quake, astounded at His rebuke.

עַמּוּדֵ֣י שָׁמַ֣יִם יְרוֹפָ֑פוּ וְ֝יִתְמְה֗וּ מִגַּעֲרָתֽוֹ׃ ‘am·mū·ḏê šā·ma·yim yə·rō·w·p̄ā·p̄ū wə·yiṯ·mə·hū mig·ga·‘ă·rā·ṯōw — WLC · 11

By His power He stirred the sea; by His understanding He shattered Rahab.

בְּ֭כֹחוֹ רָגַ֣ע הַיָּ֑ם וּבִתוּבְנָתוֹ מָ֣חַץ רָֽהַב׃ bə·ḵō·ḥōw rā·ḡa‘ hay·yām ū·ḇi·ṯū·ḇə·nå̄·ṯō mā·ḥaṣ rā·haḇ — WLC · 12

By His breath the skies were cleared; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent.
𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤐𐤓𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤇 𐤍𐤇𐤔
בְּ֭רוּחוֹ שָׁמַ֣יִם שִׁפְרָ֑ה יָ֝ד֗וֹ חֹֽלֲלָ֥ה בָּרִֽיחַ׃ נָחָ֥שׁ bə·rū·ḥōw šā·ma·yim šip̄·rāh yā·ḏōw ḥō·lă·lāh bā·rî·aḥ nā·ḥāš — WLC · 13

Indeed, these [are] but the fringes of His ways; how faint is the whisper we hear of Him! Who then can understand the thunder of His power?”

הֶן־ אֵ֤לֶּה׀ קְצ֬וֹת דַּרְכּוֹ וּמַה־ שֵּׁ֣מֶץ דָּ֭בָר נִשְׁמַע־ בּ֑וֹ מִ֣י יִתְבּוֹנָֽן׃ס וְרַ֥עַם גְּבוּרָתוֹ hen- ’êl·leh qə·ṣō·wṯ dar·kō ū·mah- šê·meṣ dā·ḇār niš·ma‘- bōw mî yiṯ·bō·w·nān wə·ra·‘am gə·ḇū·rå̄·ṯō — WLC · 14
