Elihu Rebukes Job

[“]But now, O Job, hear my speech, and listen to all my words.

וְֽאוּלָ֗ם נָ֣א אִיּ֣וֹב שְׁמַֽע־ מִלָּ֑י הַאֲזִֽינָה׃ וְֽכָל־ דְּבָרַ֥י wə·’ū·lām nā ’î·yō·wḇ šə·ma‘- mil·lāy ha·’ă·zî·nāh wə·ḵāl də·ḇā·ray — WLC · 1

Behold…, I will open my mouth; my address is on the tip of my tongue.

My words are from an upright heart, and my lips speak sincerely what I know.

The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

Refute me if you can; prepare your case and confront me…

- I… am just like you before God; I was also formed from clay.

הֵן־ אֲנִ֣י כְפִ֣יךָ לָאֵ֑ל אָֽנִי׃ גַם־ קֹרַ֥צְתִּי מֵ֝חֹ֗מֶר hên- ’ă·nî ḵə·p̄î·ḵā lā·’êl ’ā·nî ḡam- qō·raṣ·tî mê·ḥō·mer — WLC · 6

Surely no fear of me should terrify you; nor will my hand be heavy upon you.

Surely you have spoken in my hearing,… and I have heard these very words:

אַ֭ךְ אָמַ֣רְתָּ בְאָזְנָ֑י וְק֖וֹל אֶשְׁמָֽע׃ מִלִּ֣ין ’aḵ ’ā·mar·tā ḇə·’ā·zə·nāy wə·qō·wl ’eš·mā‘ mil·lîn — WLC · 8

‘I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, with no iniquity in me.
𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤆𐤊 𐤁𐤋𐤉 𐤐𐤔𐤏 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤇𐤐 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤉
אֲנִ֗י זַ֥ךְ בְּֽלִ֫י פָ֥שַׁע אָנֹכִ֑י חַ֥ף וְלֹ֖א עָוֺ֣ן לִֽי׃ ’ă·nî zaḵ bə·lî p̄ā·ša‘ ’ā·nō·ḵî ḥap̄ wə·lō ‘ā·wōn lî — WLC · 9

Yet [God] finds occasions against me; He counts me as His enemy.

הֵ֣ן יִמְצָ֑א תְּ֭נוּאוֹת עָלַ֣י יַחְשְׁבֵ֖נִי לֽוֹ׃ לְאוֹיֵ֣ב hên yim·ṣā tə·nū·’ō·wṯ ‘ā·lay yaḥ·šə·ḇê·nî lōw lə·’ō·w·yêḇ — WLC · 10

He puts my feet in the stocks; He watches over all my paths.’

יָשֵׂ֣ם רַגְלָ֑י בַּסַּ֣ד יִ֝שְׁמֹ֗ר כָּל־ אָרְחֹתָֽי׃ yā·śêm raḡ·lāy bas·saḏ yiš·mōr kāl- ’ā·rə·ḥō·ṯāy — WLC · 11

Behold, you are not right in this matter. I will answer you, for God is greater than man.

הֶן־ לֹא־ צָדַ֣קְתָּ זֹ֣את אֶעֱנֶ֑ךָּ כִּֽי־ אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַ יִרְבֶּ֥ה מֵאֱנֽוֹשׁ׃ hen- lō- ṣā·ḏaq·tā zōṯ ’e·‘ĕ·ne·kā kî- ’ĕ·lō·w·ha yir·beh mê·’ĕ·nō·wōš — WLC · 12

Why do you complain to Him that He answers nothing… a man asks?

מַ֭דּוּעַ רִיב֑וֹתָ אֵלָ֣יו כִּ֥י יַעֲנֶֽה׃ לֹ֣א־ כָל־ דְּ֝בָרָ֗יו mad·dū·a‘ rî·ḇō·w·ṯā ’ê·lāw kî ya·‘ă·neh lō- ḵāl də·ḇā·rāw — WLC · 13

For God speaks in one [way] and in another, [yet] no one notices.

כִּֽי־ אֵ֑ל יְדַבֶּר־ בְאַחַ֥ת וּ֝בִשְׁתַּ֗יִם לֹ֣א יְשׁוּרֶֽנָּה׃ kî- ’êl yə·ḏab·ber- ḇə·’a·ḥaṯ ū·ḇiš·ta·yim lō yə·šū·ren·nāh — WLC · 14

In a dream, in a vision in the night, when deep sleep falls upon men as they slumber on their beds,

בַּחֲל֤וֹם׀ חֶזְי֬וֹן לַ֗יְלָה תַּ֭רְדֵּמָה בִּנְפֹ֣ל עַל־ אֲנָשִׁ֑ים בִּ֝תְנוּמ֗וֹת עֲלֵ֣י מִשְׁכָּֽב׃ ba·ḥă·lō·wm ḥez·yō·wn lay·lāh tar·dê·māh bin·p̄ōl ‘al- ’ă·nā·šîm biṯ·nū·mō·wṯ ‘ă·lê miš·kāḇ — WLC · 15

- He opens their ears… and terrifies them with warnings

אָ֣ז יִ֭גְלֶה אֹ֣זֶן אֲנָשִׁ֑ים יַחְתֹּֽם׃ וּבְמֹ֖סָרָ֣ם ’āz yiḡ·leh ’ō·zen ’ă·nā·šîm yaḥ·tōm ū·ḇə·mō·sā·rām — WLC · 16
17
to turn a man from wrongdoing and keep him from pride,
𐤋𐤄𐤎𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤊𐤎𐤄 𐤌𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤂𐤅𐤄
לְ֭הָסִיר אָדָ֣ם מַעֲשֶׂ֑ה יְכַסֶּֽה׃ מִגֶּ֣בֶר וְגֵוָ֖ה lə·hā·sîr ’ā·ḏām ma·‘ă·śeh yə·ḵas·seh mig·ge·ḇer wə·ḡê·wāh — WLC · 17

to preserve his soul from the Pit and his life from perishing by the sword.
𐤉𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤇𐤕 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤇
יַחְשֹׂ֣ךְ נַ֭פְשׁוֹ מִנִּי־ שָׁ֑חַת וְ֝חַיָּת֗וֹ מֵעֲבֹ֥ר בַּשָּֽׁלַח׃ yaḥ·śōḵ nap̄·šōw min·nî- šā·ḥaṯ wə·ḥay·yā·ṯōw mê·‘ă·ḇōr baš·šā·laḥ — WLC · 18

A man is also chastened on his bed with pain and constant distress in his bones,
𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤊𐤇 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤊𐤀𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤕𐤍 𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤉𐤅
וְהוּכַ֣ח עַל־ מִשְׁכָּב֑וֹ בְּ֭מַכְאוֹב אֵתָֽן׃ וְרִיב עֲצָמָ֣יו wə·hū·ḵaḥ ‘al- miš·kā·ḇōw bə·maḵ·’ō·wḇ ’ê·ṯān wə·rīḇ ‘ă·ṣā·māw — WLC · 19

so that he detests his bread, and his soul [loathes] his favorite food.
𐤇𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤆𐤄𐤌𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤊𐤋
חַיָּת֣וֹ וְזִֽהֲמַ֣תּוּ לָ֑חֶם וְ֝נַפְשׁ֗וֹ תַּאֲוָֽה׃ מַאֲכַ֥ל ḥay·yā·ṯōw wə·zi·hă·mat·tū lā·ḥem wə·nap̄·šōw ta·’ă·wāh ma·’ă·ḵal — WLC · 20

His flesh wastes away from sight, and his hidden… bones protrude.
𐤁𐤔𐤓𐤅 𐤉𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤐𐤉
בְּשָׂר֣וֹ יִ֣כֶל מֵרֹ֑אִי לֹ֣א רֻאּֽוּ׃ עַ֝צְמוֹתָ֗יו וּשְׁפִי bə·śā·rōw yi·ḵel mê·rō·’î lō ru’·’ū ‘aṣ·mō·w·ṯāw ū·šə·p̄ī — WLC · 21

He draws near to the Pit, and his life to the messengers of death.
𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤋𐤔𐤇𐤕 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤌𐤕𐤉𐤌
נַפְשׁ֑וֹ וַתִּקְרַ֣ב לַשַּׁ֣חַת וְ֝חַיָּת֗וֹ לַֽמְמִתִֽים׃ nap̄·šōw wat·tiq·raḇ laš·ša·ḥaṯ wə·ḥay·yā·ṯōw lam·mi·ṯîm — WLC · 22

Yet if there is a messenger on his side, one mediator in a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him,
𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤑 𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤋𐤄𐤂𐤉𐤃 𐤋𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤅
אִם־ יֵ֤שׁ מַלְאָ֗ךְ עָלָ֨יו׀ אֶחָ֥ד מֵלִ֗יץ מִנִּי־ אָ֑לֶף לְהַגִּ֖יד לְאָדָ֣ם יָשְׁרֽוֹ׃ ’im- yêš mal·’āḵ ‘ā·lāw ’e·ḥāḏ mê·lîṣ min·nî- ’ā·lep̄ lə·hag·gîḏ lə·’ā·ḏām yā·šə·rōw — WLC · 23

to be gracious to him and say, ‘Spare him from going down to the Pit; I have found his ransom,’

וַיְחֻנֶּ֗נּוּ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר פְּ֭דָעֵהוּ מֵרֶ֥דֶת שָׁ֗חַת מָצָ֥אתִי כֹֽפֶר׃ way·ḥun·nen·nū way·yō·mer pə·ḏā·‘ê·hū mê·re·ḏeṯ šā·ḥaṯ mā·ṣā·ṯî ḵō·p̄er — WLC · 24

then his flesh is refreshed like a child’s; he returns to the days of his youth.

בְּשָׂר֣וֹ רֻֽטֲפַ֣שׁ מִנֹּ֑עַר יָ֝שׁ֗וּב לִימֵ֥י עֲלוּמָֽיו׃ bə·śā·rōw ru·ṭă·p̄aš min·nō·‘ar yā·šūḇ lî·mê ‘ă·lū·māw — WLC · 25

He prays to God and finds favor; he sees [God’s] face and shouts for joy, and God restores His righteousness to that man.
𐤉𐤏𐤕𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤑𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤕𐤓𐤅𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤍𐤅𐤔
יֶעְתַּ֤ר אֶל־ אֱל֨וֹהַּ׀ וַיִּרְצֵ֗הוּ וַיַּ֣רְא פָּ֭נָיו בִּתְרוּעָ֑ה וַיָּ֥שֶׁב צִדְקָתֽוֹ׃ לֶ֝אֱנ֗וֹשׁ ye‘·tar ’el- ’ĕ·lō·w·ah way·yir·ṣê·hū way·yar pā·nāw biṯ·rū·‘āh way·yā·šeḇ ṣiḏ·qā·ṯōw le·’ĕ·nō·wōš — WLC · 26

Then he sings before men with these words: ‘I have sinned and perverted what was right; yet I did not get what I deserved
𐤉𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤉
יָשֹׁ֤ר׀ עַל־ אֲנָשִׁ֗ים וַיֹּ֗אמֶר חָ֭טָאתִי הֶעֱוֵ֗יתִי וְיָשָׁ֥ר וְלֹא־ שָׁ֥וָה לִֽי׃ yā·šōr ‘al- ’ă·nā·šîm way·yō·mer ḥā·ṭā·ṯî he·‘ĕ·wê·ṯî wə·yā·šār wə·lō- šā·wāh lî — WLC · 27

He redeemed my soul from going down to the Pit, and I will live to see the light.’

פָּדָ֣ה נַפְשִׁי מֵעֲבֹ֣ר בַּשָּׁ֑חַת וְחַיָּתִי תִּרְאֶֽה׃ בָּא֥וֹר pā·ḏāh nap̄·šī mê·‘ă·ḇōr baš·šā·ḥaṯ wə·ḥay·yå̄·ṯī tir·’eh bā·’ō·wr — WLC · 28

Behold, all these things God does to a man, two or even three times,
𐤄𐤍 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤐𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤌 𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤐𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤔
הֶן־ כָּל־ אֵ֭לֶּה אֵ֑ל יִפְעַל־ עִם־ גָּֽבֶר׃ פַּעֲמַ֖יִם שָׁל֣וֹשׁ hen- kāl- ’êl·leh ’êl yip̄·‘al- ‘im- gā·ḇer pa·‘ă·ma·yim šā·lō·wōš — WLC · 29

to bring back his soul from the Pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of life.
𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤇𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌
לְהָשִׁ֣יב נַ֭פְשׁוֹ מִנִּי־ שָׁ֑חַת לֵ֝א֗וֹר בְּא֣וֹר הַֽחַיִּים׃ lə·hā·šîḇ nap̄·šōw min·nî- šā·ḥaṯ lê·’ō·wr bə·’ō·wr ha·ḥay·yîm — WLC · 30

Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; be silent, and I will speak.

הַקְשֵׁ֖ב אִיּ֥וֹב שְֽׁמַֽע־ לִ֑י הַ֝חֲרֵ֗שׁ וְאָנֹכִ֥י אֲדַבֵּֽר׃ haq·šêḇ ’î·yō·wḇ šə·ma‘- lî ha·ḥă·rêš wə·’ā·nō·ḵî ’ă·ḏab·bêr — WLC · 31

But if you have something to say, answer me; speak up, for I would like to vindicate you.

אִם־ יֵשׁ־ מִלִּ֥ין הֲשִׁיבֵ֑נִי דַּ֝בֵּ֗ר כִּֽי־ חָפַ֥צְתִּי צַדְּקֶֽךָּ׃ ’im- yêš- mil·lîn hă·šî·ḇê·nî dab·bêr kî- ḥā·p̄aṣ·tî ṣad·də·qe·kā — WLC · 32

But if not,… then listen to me; be quiet, and I will teach you wisdom.”
