Chapter 37

Elihu Proclaims God’s Majesty

1

[“]At this my heart also pounds and leaps from its place.

𐤋𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤐 𐤉𐤇𐤓𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤓 𐤌𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤅

לְ֭זֹאת לִבִּ֑י אַף־ יֶחֱרַ֣ד וְ֝יִתַּ֗ר מִמְּקוֹמֽוֹ׃ lə·zōṯ lib·bî ’ap̄- ye·ḥĕ·raḏ wə·yit·tar mim·mə·qō·w·mōwWLC · 1

Listen closely… to the thunder of His voice and the rumbling [that] comes from His mouth.

𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤏 𐤁𐤓𐤂𐤆 𐤒𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤂𐤄 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤐𐤉𐤅

שִׁמְע֤וּ שָׁמ֣וֹעַ בְּרֹ֣גֶז קֹל֑וֹ וְ֝הֶ֗גֶה יֵצֵֽא׃ מִפִּ֥יו šim·‘ū šā·mō·w·a‘ bə·rō·ḡez qō·lōw wə·he·ḡeh yê·ṣê mip·pîwWLC · 2

He unleashes His lightning beneath the whole sky and sends it to the ends of the earth.

𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤅𐤓𐤅 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

יִשְׁרֵ֑הוּ וְ֝אוֹר֗וֹ תַּֽחַת־ כָּל־ הַשָּׁמַ֥יִם עַל־ כַּנְפ֥וֹת הָאָֽרֶץ׃ yiš·rê·hū wə·’ō·w·rōw ta·ḥaṯ- kāl- haš·šā·ma·yim ‘al- kan·p̄ō·wṯ hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 3

Then there comes a roaring sound; He thunders with His majestic voice. He does not restrain [the lightning] when His voice resounds.

𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤂 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤏𐤌 𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏

אַחֲרָ֤יו׀ יִשְׁאַג־ ק֗וֹל יַ֭רְעֵם גְּאוֹנ֑וֹ בְּק֣וֹל וְלֹ֥א יְ֝עַקְּבֵ֗ם כִּֽי־ קוֹלֽוֹ׃ יִשָּׁמַ֥ע ’a·ḥă·rāw yiš·’aḡ- qō·wl yar·‘êm gə·’ō·w·nōw bə·qō·wl wə·lō yə·‘aq·qə·ḇêm kî- qō·w·lōw yiš·šā·ma‘WLC · 4

God thunders wondrously with His voice; He does great things we cannot comprehend.

𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤏𐤌 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤃𐤏

אֵ֣ל יַרְעֵ֤ם נִפְלָא֑וֹת בְּ֭קוֹלוֹ עֹשֶׂ֥ה גְ֝דֹל֗וֹת וְלֹ֣א נֵדָֽע׃ ’êl yar·‘êm nip̄·lā·’ō·wṯ bə·qō·w·lōw ‘ō·śeh ḡə·ḏō·lō·wṯ wə·lō nê·ḏā‘WLC · 5

For He says to the snow, ‘Fall [on] the earth,’ and to the gentle rain…, ‘Pour out a mighty downpour.’

𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤂 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤂𐤔𐤌 𐤌𐤈𐤓 𐤅𐤂𐤔𐤌 𐤏𐤆𐤅 𐤌𐤈𐤓𐤅𐤕

כִּ֤י יֹאמַ֗ר לַשֶּׁ֨לַג׀ הֱוֵ֫א אָ֥רֶץ וְגֶ֥שֶׁם מָטָ֑ר וְ֝גֶ֗שֶׁם עֻזּֽוֹ׃ מִטְר֥וֹת kî yō·mar laš·šɛ·laḡ hĕ·wê ’ā·reṣ wə·ḡe·šem mā·ṭār wə·ḡe·šem ‘uz·zōw miṭ·rō·wṯWLC · 6

He seals up the hand of every man, so that all men may know His work.

𐤉𐤇𐤕𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤋𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄𐤅

יַחְתּ֑וֹם בְּיַד־ כָּל־ אָדָ֥ם כָּל־ אַנְשֵׁ֥י לָ֝דַ֗עַת מַעֲשֵֽׂהוּ׃ yaḥ·tō·wm bə·yaḏ- kāl- ’ā·ḏām kāl- ’an·šê lā·ḏa·‘aṯ ma·‘ă·śê·hūWLC · 7

The wild animals… enter their lairs; they settle down in their dens.

𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤓𐤁 𐤕𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤄

חַיָּ֣ה בְמוֹ־ וַתָּבֹ֣א אָ֑רֶב תִשְׁכֹּֽן׃ וּבִמְע֖וֹנֹתֶ֣יהָ ḥay·yāh ḇə·mōw- wat·tā·ḇō ’ā·reḇ ṯiš·kōn ū·ḇim·‘ō·w·nō·ṯe·hāWLC · 8

The tempest comes from its chamber, and the cold from the driving north winds.

𐤎𐤅𐤐𐤄 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤇𐤃𐤓 𐤒𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤌𐤆𐤓𐤉𐤌

סוּפָ֑ה תָּב֣וֹא מִן־ הַ֭חֶדֶר קָרָֽה׃ וּֽמִמְּזָרִ֥ים sū·p̄āh tā·ḇō·w min- ha·ḥe·ḏer qā·rāh ū·mim·mə·zā·rîmWLC · 9

10

By the breath of God the ice is formed and the watery expanses are frozen.

𐤌𐤍𐤔𐤌𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤓𐤇 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤑𐤒

מִנִּשְׁמַת־ אֵ֥ל קָ֑רַח יִתֶּן־ מַ֣יִם וְרֹ֖חַב בְּמוּצָֽק׃ min·niš·maṯ- ’êl qā·raḥ yit·ten- ma·yim wə·rō·ḥaḇ bə·mū·ṣāqWLC · 10

  • He loads the clouds with moisture; He scatters His lightning through them.

𐤀𐤐 𐤉𐤈𐤓𐤉𐤇 𐤏𐤁 𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤐𐤉𐤑 𐤀𐤅𐤓𐤅 𐤏𐤍𐤍

אַף־ יַטְרִ֣יחַ עָ֑ב בְּ֭רִי יָ֝פִ֗יץ אוֹרֽוֹ׃ עֲנַ֣ן ’ap̄- yaṭ·rî·aḥ ‘āḇ bə·rî yā·p̄îṣ ’ō·w·rōw ‘ă·nanWLC · 11

They swirl about, whirling at His direction, accomplishing all that He commands over the face of all the earth.

𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤎𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤕𐤄𐤐𐤊 𐤁𐤕𐤇𐤁𐤅𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤑𐤅𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤕𐤁𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄

וְה֤וּא מְסִבּ֨וֹת׀ מִתְהַפֵּ֣ךְ בְּתַחְבּוּלָתוֹ לְפָעֳלָ֑ם כֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְצַוֵּ֓ם׀ עַל־ פְּנֵ֖י תֵבֵ֣ל אָֽרְצָה׃ wə·hū mə·sib·bō·wṯ miṯ·hap·pêḵ bə·ṯaḥ·bū·lå̄·ṯō lə·p̄ā·‘o·lām kōl ’ă·šer yə·ṣaw·wêm ‘al- pə·nê ṯê·ḇêl ’ā·rə·ṣāhWLC · 12

Whether for punishment or for His land,… He accomplishes this in His loving devotion.

𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅 𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤄𐤅 𐤋𐤇𐤎𐤃

אִם־ לְשֵׁ֥בֶט אִם־ לְאַרְצ֑וֹ אִם־ יַמְצִאֵֽהוּ׃ לְ֝חֶ֗סֶד ’im- lə·šê·ḇeṭ ’im- lə·’ar·ṣōw ’im- yam·ṣi·’ê·hū lə·ḥe·seḏWLC · 13

14

Listen to this, O Job; stand still and consider the wonders of God.

𐤄𐤀𐤆𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤉𐤅𐤁 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤍 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋

הַאֲזִ֣ינָה זֹּ֣את אִיּ֑וֹב עֲ֝מֹ֗ד וְהִתְבּוֹנֵ֤ן׀ נִפְלְא֬וֹת אֵֽל׃ ha·’ă·zî·nāh zōṯ ’î·yō·wḇ ‘ă·mōḏ wə·hiṯ·bō·w·nên nip̄·lə·’ō·wṯ ’êlWLC · 14

Do you know how God… dispatches the clouds or makes the lightning flash?

𐤄𐤕𐤃𐤏 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤅𐤌 𐤏𐤍𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤐𐤉𐤏

הֲ֭תֵדַע אֱל֣וֹהַּ עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם בְּשׂוּם־ עֲנָנֽוֹ׃ א֣וֹר וְ֝הוֹפִ֗יעַ hă·ṯê·ḏa‘ ’ĕ·lō·w·ah ‘ă·lê·hem bə·śūm- ‘ă·nā·nōw ’ō·wr wə·hō·w·p̄î·a‘WLC · 15

16

Do you understand how the clouds float, those wonders of Him who is perfect in knowledge?

𐤄𐤕𐤃𐤏 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤁 𐤌𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤉 𐤌𐤐𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤏𐤉𐤌

הֲ֭תֵדַע עַל־ עָ֑ב מִפְלְשֵׂי־ מִ֝פְלְא֗וֹת תְּמִ֣ים דֵּעִֽים׃ hă·ṯê·ḏa‘ ‘al- ‘āḇ mip̄·lə·śê- mip̄·lə·’ō·wṯ tə·mîm dê·‘îmWLC · 16

17

You whose clothes get hot when the land lies hushed under the south wind,

𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤊 𐤇𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤁𐤄𐤔𐤒𐤈 𐤌𐤃𐤓𐤅𐤌

אֲשֶׁר־ בְּגָדֶ֥יךָ חַמִּ֑ים אֶ֝֗רֶץ בְּהַשְׁקִ֥ט מִדָּרֽוֹם׃ ’ă·šer- bə·ḡā·ḏe·ḵā ḥam·mîm ’e·reṣ bə·haš·qiṭ mid·dā·rō·wmWLC · 17

18

can you, like Him, spread out the skies, as strong as a mirror of bronze?

𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤕𐤓𐤒𐤉𐤏 𐤋𐤔𐤇𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤓𐤀𐤉 𐤌𐤅𐤑𐤒

עִ֭מּוֹ תַּרְקִ֣יעַ לִשְׁחָקִ֑ים חֲ֝זָקִ֗ים כִּרְאִ֥י מוּצָֽק׃ ‘im·mōw tar·qî·a‘ liš·ḥā·qîm ḥă·zā·qîm kir·’î mū·ṣāqWLC · 18

19

Teach us what we should say to Him; we cannot draw up our case because of our darkness.

𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤄 𐤍𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤏𐤓𐤊 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤇𐤔𐤊

ה֭וֹדִיעֵנוּ מַה־ נֹּ֣אמַר ל֑וֹ לֹ֥א־ נַ֝עֲרֹ֗ךְ מִפְּנֵי־ חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ hō·w·ḏî·‘ê·nū mah- nō·mar lōw lō- na·‘ă·rōḵ mip·pə·nê- ḥō·šeḵWLC · 19

20

Should He be told that I want to speak?… Would a man ask to be swallowed up

𐤄𐤉𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤁𐤋𐤏

הַֽיְסֻפַּר־ ל֭וֹ כִּ֣י אֲדַבֵּ֑ר אִֽם־ אִ֝֗ישׁ אָ֥מַר כִּ֣י יְבֻלָּֽע׃ hay·sup·par- lōw kî ’ă·ḏab·bêr ’im- ’îš ’ā·mar kî yə·ḇul·lā‘WLC · 20

21

Now no one can gaze at the sun [when] it [is] bright in the skies after the wind has swept them clean.

𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤄𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤔𐤇𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤈𐤄𐤓𐤌

וְעַתָּ֤ה׀ לֹ֘א רָ֤אוּ א֗וֹר ה֭וּא בָּהִ֣יר בַּשְּׁחָקִ֑ים וְר֥וּחַ עָ֝בְרָ֗ה וַֽתְּטַהֲרֵֽם׃ wə·‘at·tāh lō rā·’ū ’ō·wr hū bā·hîr baš·šə·ḥā·qîm wə·rū·aḥ ‘ā·ḇə·rāh wat·tə·ṭa·hă·rêmWLC · 21

22

Out of the north He comes in golden [splendor]; awesome majesty surrounds Him.

𐤌𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤍𐤅𐤓𐤀 𐤄𐤅𐤃 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤄

מִ֭צָּפוֹן יֶֽאֱתֶ֑ה זָהָ֣ב נ֣וֹרָא הֽוֹד׃ עַל־ אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַּ miṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn ye·’ĕ·ṯeh zā·hāḇ nō·w·rā hō·wḏ ‘al- ’ĕ·lō·w·ahWLC · 22

23

The Almighty is beyond our reach; He is exalted in power! In His justice and great righteousness He does not oppress.

𐤔𐤃𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤄𐤅 𐤔𐤂𐤉𐤀 𐤊𐤇 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤅𐤓𐤁 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤄

שַׁדַּ֣י לֹֽא־ מְ֭צָאנֻהוּ שַׂגִּיא־ כֹ֑חַ וּמִשְׁפָּ֥ט וְרֹב־ צְ֝דָקָ֗ה לֹ֣א יְעַנֶּֽה׃ šad·day lō- mə·ṣā·nu·hū śag·gî- ḵō·aḥ ū·miš·pāṭ wə·rōḇ- ṣə·ḏā·qāh lō yə·‘an·nehWLC · 23

24

Therefore, men fear Him, for He is not partial to the wise in heart.”
