Chapter 38

The LORD Challenges Job

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤉𐤅𐤁 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤎𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓

יְהוָ֣ה אֶת־ וַיַּֽעַן־ אִ֭יּוֹב מִנ הַסְּעָרָה וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·ya·‘an- ’î·yō·wḇ min has·sə·ʿå̄·rå̄h way·yō·marWLC · 1

“Who is this who obscures My counsel by words without knowledge?

𐤌𐤉 𐤆𐤄 𐤌𐤇𐤔𐤉𐤊 𐤏𐤑𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤋𐤉 𐤃𐤏𐤕

מִ֤י זֶ֨ה׀ מַחְשִׁ֖יךְ עֵצָ֥ה בְמִלִּ֗ין בְּֽלִי־ דָֽעַת׃ mî zeh maḥ·šîḵ ‘ê·ṣāh ḇə·mil·lîn bə·lî- ḏā·‘aṯWLC · 2

Now brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall inform Me.

𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤆𐤓 𐤇𐤋𐤑𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤉

נָ֣א אֱזָר־ חֲלָצֶ֑יךָ כְגֶ֣בֶר וְ֝אֶשְׁאָלְךָ֗ וְהוֹדִיעֵֽנִי׃ nā ’ĕ·zār- ḥă·lā·ṣe·ḵā ḵə·ḡe·ḇer wə·’eš·’ā·lə·ḵā wə·hō·w·ḏî·‘ê·nîWLC · 3

Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell [Me], if you have understanding…

אֵיפֹ֣ה הָ֭יִיתָ בְּיָסְדִי־ אָ֑רֶץ הַ֝גֵּ֗ד אִם־ יָדַ֥עְתָּ בִינָֽה׃ ’ê·p̄ōh hā·yî·ṯā bə·yā·sə·ḏî- ’ā·reṣ hag·gêḏ ’im- yā·ḏa‘·tā ḇî·nāhWLC · 4

Who fixed its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched a measuring line across it?

מִי־ שָׂ֣ם מְ֭מַדֶּיהָ כִּ֣י תֵדָ֑ע א֤וֹ מִֽי־ נָטָ֖ה קָּֽו׃ עָלֶ֣יהָ mî- śām mə·mad·de·hā kî ṯê·ḏā‘ ’ōw mî- nā·ṭāh qāw ‘ā·le·hāWLC · 5

  • On what were its foundations set, or who laid vvv its cornerstone,

עַל־ מָ֭ה אֲדָנֶ֣יהָ הָטְבָּ֑עוּ א֥וֹ מִֽי־ יָ֝רָ֗ה אֶ֣בֶן פִּנָּתָֽהּ׃ ‘al- māh ’ă·ḏā·ne·hā hā·ṭə·bā·‘ū ’ōw mî- yā·rāh ’e·ḇen pin·nā·ṯāhWLC · 6

while the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤊𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤍 𐤉𐤇𐤃 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤉𐤏𐤅

בֹ֑קֶר כּ֣וֹכְבֵי בְּרָן־ יַ֭חַד כָּל־ בְּנֵ֥י אֱלֹהִֽים׃ וַ֝יָּרִ֗יעוּ ḇō·qer kō·wḵ·ḇê bə·rān- ya·ḥaḏ kāl- bə·nê ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yā·rî·‘ūWLC · 7

Who enclosed the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb…,

𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤊 𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤃𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤂𐤉𐤇𐤅 𐤌𐤓𐤇𐤌 𐤉𐤑𐤀

וַיָּ֣סֶךְ יָ֑ם בִּדְלָתַ֣יִם בְּ֝גִיח֗וֹ מֵרֶ֥חֶם יֵצֵֽא׃ way·yā·seḵ yām biḏ·lā·ṯa·yim bə·ḡî·ḥōw mê·re·ḥem yê·ṣêWLC · 8

when I made the clouds its garment and thick darkness its blanket,

𐤁𐤔𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤋𐤁𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤓𐤐𐤋 𐤇𐤕𐤋𐤕𐤅

בְּשׂוּמִ֣י עָנָ֣ן לְבֻשׁ֑וֹ וַ֝עֲרָפֶ֗ל חֲתֻלָּתֽוֹ׃ bə·śū·mî ‘ā·nān lə·ḇu·šōw wa·‘ă·rā·p̄el ḥă·ṯul·lā·ṯōwWLC · 9

when I fixed… its boundaries and set in place its bars and doors,

𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤇𐤒𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤇 𐤅𐤃𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤌

וָאֶשְׁבֹּ֣ר עָלָ֣יו חֻקִּ֑י וָֽ֝אָשִׂ֗ים בְּרִ֣יחַ וּדְלָתָֽיִם׃ wā·’eš·bōr ‘ā·lāw ḥuq·qî wā·’ā·śîm bə·rî·aḥ ū·ḏə·lā·ṯā·yimWLC · 10

and I declared: ‘You may come this far…, but no farther; here your proud waves must stop’?

וָאֹמַ֗ר תָ֭בוֹא עַד־ פֹּ֣ה וְלֹ֣א תֹסִ֑יף וּפֹ֥א־ בִּגְא֥וֹן גַּלֶּֽיךָ׃ יָ֝שִׁ֗ית wā·’ō·mar ṯā·ḇō·w ‘aḏ- pōh wə·lō ṯō·sîp̄ ū·p̄ō- biḡ·’ō·wn gal·le·ḵā yā·šîṯWLC · 11

In your days, have you commanded the morning or assigned the dawn its place,

𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤊 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤇𐤓 𐤌𐤒𐤌𐤅

הְֽ֭מִיָּמֶיךָ צִוִּ֣יתָ בֹּ֑קֶר יִדַּעְתָּה שַׁחַר מְקֹמֽוֹ׃ hə·mī·yå̄·mɛ·ḵå̄ ṣiw·wî·ṯā bō·qer yid·daʿ·tå̄h ša·ḥar mə·qō·mōwWLC · 12

that it might spread to the ends of the earth and shake the wicked out of it?

𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤁𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤏𐤓𐤅 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤄

לֶ֭אֱחֹז בְּכַנְפ֣וֹת הָאָ֑רֶץ וְיִנָּעֲר֖וּ רְשָׁעִ֣ים מִמֶּֽנָּה׃ le·’ĕ·ḥōz bə·ḵan·p̄ō·wṯ hā·’ā·reṣ wə·yin·nā·‘ă·rū rə·šå̄·ʿīm mim·men·nāhWLC · 13

The earth takes shape like clay [under] a seal; its hills stand out like the folds of a garment.

𐤕𐤕𐤄𐤐𐤊 𐤊𐤇𐤌𐤓 𐤇𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤑𐤁𐤅 𐤊𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤔

תִּ֭תְהַפֵּךְ כְּחֹ֣מֶר חוֹתָ֑ם וְ֝יִֽתְיַצְּב֗וּ כְּמ֣וֹ לְבֽוּשׁ׃ tiṯ·hap·pêḵ kə·ḥō·mer ḥō·w·ṯām wə·yiṯ·yaṣ·ṣə·ḇū kə·mōw lə·ḇūšWLC · 14

15

Light is withheld from the wicked, and their upraised arm is broken.

𐤀𐤅𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤍𐤏 𐤌𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤆𐤓𐤅𐤏 𐤕𐤔𐤁𐤓

אוֹרָ֑ם וְיִמָּנַ֣ע מֵרְשָׁעִ֣ים רָ֝מָ֗ה וּזְר֥וֹעַ תִּשָּׁבֵֽר׃ ’ō·w·rām wə·yim·mā·na‘ mē·rə·šå̄·ʿīm rā·māh ū·zə·rō·w·a‘ tiš·šā·ḇêrWLC · 15

Have you journeyed to the vents of the sea or walked in the trenches of the deep?

𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤃 𐤍𐤁𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤇𐤒𐤓 𐤕𐤄𐤅𐤌

הֲ֭בָאתָ עַד־ נִבְכֵי־ יָ֑ם הִתְהַלָּֽכְתָּ׃ וּבְחֵ֥קֶר תְּ֝ה֗וֹם hă·ḇā·ṯā ‘aḏ- niḇ·ḵê- yām hiṯ·hal·lā·ḵə·tā ū·ḇə·ḥê·qer tə·hō·wmWLC · 16

17

Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?

𐤔𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤍𐤂𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤊 𐤕𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤑𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕

שַׁעֲרֵי־ מָ֑וֶת הֲנִגְל֣וּ לְ֭ךָ תִּרְאֶֽה׃ וְשַׁעֲרֵ֖י צַלְמָ֣וֶת ša·‘ă·rê- mā·weṯ hă·niḡ·lū lə·ḵā tir·’eh wə·ša·‘ă·rê ṣal·mā·weṯWLC · 17

18

Have you surveyed… the extent of the earth? Tell [Me], if you know all this.

𐤄𐤕𐤁𐤍𐤍𐤕 𐤏𐤃 𐤓𐤇𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤄𐤂𐤃 𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤊𐤋𐤄

הִ֭תְבֹּנַנְתָּ עַד־ רַחֲבֵי־ אָ֑רֶץ הַ֝גֵּ֗ד אִם־ יָדַ֥עְתָּ כֻלָּֽהּ׃ hiṯ·bō·nan·tā ‘aḏ- ra·ḥă·ḇê- ’ā·reṣ hag·gêḏ ’im- yā·ḏa‘·tā ḵul·lāhWLC · 18

Where… is the way to the home of light? Do you know where… darkness resides,

𐤀𐤉 𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤉 𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤌𐤒𐤌𐤅

אֵי־ זֶ֣ה הַ֭דֶּרֶךְ יִשְׁכָּן־ א֑וֹר אֵי־ זֶ֥ה וְ֝חֹ֗שֶׁךְ מְקֹמֽוֹ׃ ’ê- zeh had·de·reḵ yiš·kān- ’ō·wr ’ê- zeh wə·ḥō·šeḵ mə·qō·mōwWLC · 19

so you can lead it back to its border?… Do you know the paths to its home?

𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤒𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅

כִּ֣י תִ֭קָּחֶנּוּ אֶל־ גְּבוּל֑וֹ וְכִֽי־ תָ֝בִ֗ין נְתִיב֥וֹת בֵּיתֽוֹ׃ kî ṯiq·qā·ḥen·nū ’el- gə·ḇū·lōw wə·ḵî- ṯā·ḇîn nə·ṯî·ḇō·wṯ bê·ṯōwWLC · 20

Surely you know, for you were already born! And the number of your days is great!

𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤆 𐤕𐤅𐤋𐤃 𐤅𐤌𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤊 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌

יָ֭דַעְתָּ כִּי־ אָ֣ז תִּוָּלֵ֑ד וּמִסְפַּ֖ר יָמֶ֣יךָ רַבִּֽים׃ yā·ḏa‘·tā kî- ’āz tiw·wā·lêḏ ū·mis·par yā·me·ḵā rab·bîmWLC · 21

Have you entered… the storehouses of snow or observed the storehouses of hail,

𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤋𐤂 𐤕𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤃

הֲ֭בָאתָ אֶל־ אֹצְר֣וֹת שָׁ֑לֶג תִּרְאֶֽה׃ וְאֹצְר֖וֹת בָּרָ֣ד hă·ḇā·ṯā ’el- ’ō·ṣə·rō·wṯ šā·leḡ tir·’eh wə·’ō·ṣə·rō·wṯ bā·rāḏWLC · 22

which I hold in reserve for times of trouble, for the day of war and battle?

אֲשֶׁר־ חָשַׂ֥כְתִּי לְעֶת־ צָ֑ר לְי֥וֹם קְ֝רָ֗ב וּמִלְחָמָֽה׃ ’ă·šer- ḥā·śaḵ·tî lə·‘eṯ- ṣār lə·yō·wm qə·rāḇ ū·mil·ḥā·māhWLC · 23

In which… direction is the lightning dispersed, or the east wind scattered over the earth?

𐤀𐤉 𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤉𐤇𐤋𐤒 𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤐𐤑 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑

אֵי־ זֶ֣ה הַ֭דֶּרֶךְ א֑וֹר יֵחָ֣לֶק קָדִ֣ים יָפֵ֖ץ עֲלֵי־ אָֽרֶץ׃ ’ê- zeh had·de·reḵ ’ō·wr yê·ḥā·leq qā·ḏîm yā·p̄êṣ ‘ă·lê- ’ā·reṣWLC · 24

Who cuts a channel for the flood or clears a path for the thunderbolt,

𐤌𐤉 𐤐𐤋𐤂 𐤕𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤈𐤐 𐤅𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤋𐤇𐤆𐤉𐤆 𐤒𐤋𐤅𐤕

מִֽי־ פִלַּ֣ג תְּעָלָ֑ה לַשֶּׁ֣טֶף וְ֝דֶ֗רֶךְ לַחֲזִ֥יז קֹלֽוֹת׃ mî- p̄il·laḡ tə·‘ā·lāh laš·še·ṭep̄ wə·ḏe·reḵ la·ḥă·zîz qō·lō·wṯWLC · 25

to bring rain on a barren… land, on a desert where no man [lives]

𐤋𐤄𐤌𐤈𐤉𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤁𐤅

לְ֭הַמְטִיר עַל־ לֹא־ אִ֑ישׁ אֶ֣רֶץ מִ֝דְבָּ֗ר לֹא־ אָדָ֥ם בּֽוֹ׃ lə·ham·ṭîr ‘al- lō- ’îš ’e·reṣ miḏ·bār lō- ’ā·ḏām bōwWLC · 26

to satisfy the parched wasteland and make it sprout… with tender grass?

𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤏 𐤔𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤄𐤑𐤌𐤉𐤇 𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤃𐤔𐤀

לְהַשְׂבִּ֣יעַ שֹׁ֭אָה וּמְשֹׁאָ֑ה וּ֝לְהַצְמִ֗יחַ מֹ֣צָא דֶֽשֶׁא׃ lə·haś·bî·a‘ šō·’āh ū·mə·šō·’āh ū·lə·haṣ·mî·aḥ mō·ṣā ḏe·šeWLC · 27

Does the rain have a father?… Who has begotten the drops of dew?

𐤋𐤌𐤈𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤁 𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤂𐤋𐤉 𐤈𐤋

לַמָּטָ֥ר הֲיֵשׁ־ אָ֑ב א֥וֹ מִי־ ה֝וֹלִ֗יד אֶגְלֵי־ טָֽל׃ lam·mā·ṭār hă·yêš- ’āḇ ’ōw mî- hō·w·lîḏ ’eḡ·lê- ṭālWLC · 28

From whose womb does the ice emerge? Who gives birth to the frost from heaven,

𐤌𐤉 𐤌𐤁𐤈𐤍 𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤇 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤐𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌

מִ֭י מִבֶּ֣טֶן הַקָּ֑רַח יָצָ֣א מִ֣י יְלָדֽוֹ׃ וּכְפֹ֥ר שָׁ֝מַיִם mî mib·be·ṭen haq·qā·raḥ yā·ṣā mî yə·lā·ḏōw ū·ḵə·p̄ōr šā·ma·yimWLC · 29

when the waters become hard as stone and the surface of the deep is frozen?

𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤕𐤇𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤊𐤀𐤁𐤍 𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤕𐤄𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤕𐤋𐤊𐤃𐤅

מַ֣יִם יִתְחַבָּ֑אוּ כָּ֭אֶבֶן וּפְנֵ֥י תְ֝ה֗וֹם יִתְלַכָּֽדוּ׃ ma·yim yiṯ·ḥab·bā·’ū kā·’e·ḇen ū·p̄ə·nê ṯə·hō·wm yiṯ·lak·kā·ḏūWLC · 30

Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades or loosen the belt of Orion?

הַֽ֭תְקַשֵּׁר מַעֲדַנּ֣וֹת כִּימָ֑ה אֽוֹ־ תְּפַתֵּֽחַ׃ מֹשְׁכ֖וֹת כְּסִ֣יל haṯ·qaš·šêr ma·‘ă·ḏan·nō·wṯ kî·māh ’ōw- tə·p̄at·tê·aḥ mō·šə·ḵō·wṯ kə·sîlWLC · 31

Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Bear and her cubs?

𐤄𐤕𐤑𐤉𐤀 𐤌𐤆𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤅 𐤕𐤍𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤔 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄

הֲתֹצִ֣יא מַזָּר֣וֹת בְּעִתּ֑וֹ תַנְחֵֽם׃ וְ֝עַ֗יִשׁ עַל־ בָּנֶ֥יהָ hă·ṯō·ṣî maz·zā·rō·wṯ bə·‘it·tōw ṯan·ḥêm wə·‘a·yiš ‘al- bā·ne·hāWLC · 32

Do you know the laws of the heavens?… Can you set their dominion over the earth?

𐤄𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤇𐤒𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤔𐤈𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑

הֲ֭יָדַעְתָּ חֻקּ֣וֹת שָׁמָ֑יִם אִם־ תָּשִׂ֖ים מִשְׁטָר֣וֹ בָאָֽרֶץ׃ hă·yā·ḏa‘·tā ḥuq·qō·wṯ šā·mā·yim ’im- tā·śîm miš·ṭā·rōw ḇā·’ā·reṣWLC · 33

Can you command… the clouds so that a flood of water covers you?
