Chapter 5

Eliphaz Continues: God Blesses those Who Seek Him

[“]Call out if you please, vvv but who will answer? To which of the holy ones will you turn?

קְֽרָא־ נָ֭א הֲיֵ֣שׁ עוֹנֶ֑ךָּ וְאֶל־ מִ֖י מִקְּדֹשִׁ֣ים תִּפְנֶֽה׃ qə·rā- nā hă·yêš ‘ō·w·ne·kā wə·’el- mî miq·qə·ḏō·šîm tip̄·nehWLC · 1

For resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple.

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤏𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤓𐤂 𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤋 𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤄 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤐𐤕𐤄

כִּֽי־ כָּ֑עַשׂ יַהֲרָג־ לֶֽ֭אֱוִיל קִנְאָֽה׃ תָּמִ֥ית וּ֝פֹתֶ֗ה kî- kā·‘aś ya·hă·rāḡ- le·’ĕ·wîl qin·’āh tā·mîṯ ū·p̄ō·ṯehWLC · 2

I have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly his house was cursed.

𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤔 𐤐𐤕𐤀𐤌 𐤍𐤅𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤒𐤅𐤁

אֲ‍ֽנִי־ רָ֭אִיתִי אֱוִ֣יל מַשְׁרִ֑ישׁ פִתְאֹֽם׃ נָוֵ֣הוּ וָאֶקּ֖וֹב ’ănî- rā·’î·ṯî ’ĕ·wîl maš·rîš p̄iṯ·’ōm nā·wê·hū wā·’eq·qō·wḇWLC · 3

His sons are far from safety, crushed in court without a defender.

𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤓𐤇𐤒𐤅 𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤊𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤑𐤉𐤋

בָנָ֣יו יִרְחֲק֣וּ מִיֶּ֑שַׁע וְיִֽדַּכְּא֥וּ בַ֝שַּׁ֗עַר וְאֵ֣ין מַצִּֽיל׃ ḇā·nāw yir·ḥă·qū mî·ye·ša‘ wə·yid·dak·kə·’ū ḇaš·ša·‘ar wə·’ên maṣ·ṣîlWLC · 4

The hungry consume… his harvest, taking it even from the thorns, and the thirsty pant after his wealth.

𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤑𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤉𐤒𐤇𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤑𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤑𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤀𐤐 𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤌

רָ֘עֵ֤ב אֲשֶׁ֤ר יֹאכֵ֗ל וְאֶֽל־ קְצִיר֨וֹ׀ יִקָּחֵ֑הוּ מִצִּנִּ֥ים צַמִּ֣ים וְשָׁאַ֖ף חֵילָֽם׃ rā·‘êḇ ’ă·šer yō·ḵêl wə·’el- qə·ṣî·rōw yiq·qā·ḥê·hū miṣ·ṣin·nîm ṣam·mîm wə·šā·’ap̄ ḥê·lāmWLC · 5

For distress does not spring from the dust, and trouble does not sprout from the ground.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤋 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤑𐤌𐤇 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄

כִּ֤י׀ אָ֑וֶן לֹא־ יֵצֵ֣א מֵעָפָ֣ר עָמָֽל׃ לֹא־ יִצְמַ֥ח וּ֝מֵאֲדָמָ֗ה kî ’ā·wen lō- yê·ṣê mê·‘ā·p̄ār ‘ā·māl lō- yiṣ·maḥ ū·mê·’ă·ḏā·māhWLC · 6

Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks… fly upward.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤅𐤋𐤃 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤓𐤔𐤐 𐤏𐤅𐤐 𐤉𐤂𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅

כִּֽי־ אָ֭דָם יוּלָּ֑ד לְעָמָ֣ל וּבְנֵי־ רֶ֝֗שֶׁף עֽוּף׃ יַגְבִּ֥יהוּ kî- ’ā·ḏām yūl·lāḏ lə·‘ā·māl ū·ḇə·nê- re·šep̄ ‘ūp̄ yaḡ·bî·hūWLC · 7

However, if I were you, I would appeal to God and lay my cause before Him—

𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤓𐤔 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌

אוּלָ֗ם אֲ֭נִי אֶדְרֹ֣שׁ אֶל־ אֵ֑ל אָשִׂ֥ים דִּבְרָתִֽי׃ וְאֶל־ אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים ’ū·lām ’ă·nî ’eḏ·rōš ’el- ’êl ’ā·śîm diḇ·rā·ṯî wə·’el- ’ĕ·lō·hîmWLC · 8

[the One] who does great and unsearchable things, wonders… without number.

𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤇𐤒𐤓 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤎𐤐𐤓

עֹשֶׂ֣ה גְ֭דֹלוֹת וְאֵ֣ין חֵ֑קֶר נִ֝פְלָא֗וֹת עַד־ אֵ֥ין מִסְפָּֽר׃ ‘ō·śeh ḡə·ḏō·lō·wṯ wə·’ên ḥê·qer nip̄·lā·’ō·wṯ ‘aḏ- ’ên mis·pārWLC · 9

He gives rain to… the earth and sends water upon… the fields.

𐤄𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤌𐤈𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤇𐤅𐤑𐤅𐤕

הַנֹּתֵ֣ן מָ֭טָר עַל־ פְּנֵי־ אָ֑רֶץ וְשֹׁ֥לֵֽחַ מַ֝יִם עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י חוּצֽוֹת׃ han·nō·ṯên mā·ṭār ‘al- pə·nê- ’ā·reṣ wə·šō·lê·aḥ ma·yim ‘al- pə·nê ḥū·ṣō·wṯWLC · 10

11

He sets the lowly on high, so that mourners are lifted to safety.

𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤌 𐤔𐤐𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤒𐤃𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤂𐤁𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤏

לָשׂ֣וּם שְׁפָלִ֣ים לְמָר֑וֹם וְ֝קֹדְרִ֗ים שָׂ֣גְבוּ יֶֽשַׁע׃ lā·śūm šə·p̄ā·lîm lə·mā·rō·wm wə·qō·ḏə·rîm śā·ḡə·ḇū ye·ša‘WLC · 11

12

He thwarts the schemes of the crafty, so that their hands find no success.

𐤌𐤐𐤓 𐤌𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤄

מֵ֭פֵר מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת עֲרוּמִ֑ים יְ֝דֵיהֶ֗ם תַעֲשֶׂ֥ינָה וְֽלֹא־ תּוּשִׁיָּֽה׃ mê·p̄êr maḥ·šə·ḇō·wṯ ‘ă·rū·mîm yə·ḏê·hem ṯa·‘ă·śe·nāh wə·lō- tū·šî·yāhWLC · 12

13

He catches the wise in their craftiness, and sweeps away the plans of the cunning.

𐤋𐤊𐤃 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤌𐤌 𐤍𐤌𐤄𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤑𐤕 𐤍𐤐𐤕𐤋𐤉𐤌

לֹכֵ֣ד חֲכָמִ֣ים בְּעָרְמָ֑ם נִמְהָֽרָה׃ וַעֲצַ֖ת נִפְתָּלִ֣ים lō·ḵêḏ ḥă·ḵā·mîm bə·‘ā·rə·mām nim·hā·rāh wa·‘ă·ṣaṯ nip̄·tā·lîmWLC · 13

14

They encounter darkness by day and grope at noon as in the night.

𐤉𐤐𐤂𐤔𐤅 𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤔𐤔𐤅 𐤁𐤑𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄

יְפַגְּשׁוּ־ חֹ֑שֶׁךְ יוֹמָ֥ם יְֽמַשְׁשׁ֥וּ בַֽצָּהֳרָֽיִם׃ וְ֝כַלַּ֗יְלָה yə·p̄ag·gə·šū- ḥō·šeḵ yō·w·mām yə·maš·šū ḇaṣ·ṣā·ho·rā·yim wə·ḵal·lay·lāhWLC · 14

15

He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth and from the clutches of the powerful.

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤌𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤇𐤆𐤒

וַיֹּ֣שַׁע אֶבְיֽוֹן׃ מֵ֭חֶרֶב מִפִּיהֶ֑ם וּמִיַּ֖ד חָזָ֣ק way·yō·ša‘ ’eḇ·yō·wn mê·ḥe·reḇ mip·pî·hem ū·mî·yaḏ ḥā·zāqWLC · 15

16

So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.

𐤋𐤃𐤋 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤕𐤒𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤕𐤄 𐤒𐤐𐤑𐤄 𐤐𐤉𐤄

לַדַּ֣ל וַתְּהִ֣י תִּקְוָ֑ה וְ֝עֹלָ֗תָה קָ֣פְצָה פִּֽיהָ׃ lad·dal wat·tə·hî tiq·wāh wə·‘ō·lā·ṯāh qā·p̄ə·ṣāh pî·hāWLC · 16

17

Blessed indeed is the man [whom] God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.

𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤅𐤔 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤊𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤌𐤀𐤎 𐤅𐤌𐤅𐤎𐤓 𐤔𐤃𐤉

אַשְׁרֵ֣י הִנֵּ֤ה אֱ֭נוֹשׁ אֱל֑וֹהַּ יוֹכִחֶ֣נּֽוּ אַל־ תִּמְאָֽס׃ וּמוּסַ֥ר שַׁ֝דַּ֗י ’aš·rê hin·nêh ’ĕ·nō·wōš ’ĕ·lō·w·ah yō·w·ḵi·ḥen·nū ’al- tim·’ās ū·mū·sar šad·daiWLC · 17

18

For He wounds, but He also binds; He strikes, but His hands also heal.

𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤊𐤀𐤉𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤁𐤔 𐤉𐤌𐤇𐤑 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤕𐤓𐤐𐤉𐤍𐤄

כִּ֤י ה֣וּא יַכְאִ֣יב וְיֶחְבָּ֑שׁ יִ֝מְחַ֗ץ וְיָדוֹ תִּרְפֶּֽינָה׃ kî hū yaḵ·’îḇ wə·yeḥ·bāš yim·ḥaṣ wə·yå̄·ḏō tir·pe·nāhWLC · 18

19

He will rescue you from six calamities; no harm will touch you in seven.

𐤉𐤑𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤔𐤔 𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤏 𐤉𐤂𐤏 𐤁𐤊 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤁𐤏

יַצִּילֶ֑ךָּ בְּשֵׁ֣שׁ צָ֭רוֹת לֹא־ רָֽע׃ יִגַּ֖ע בְּךָ֣ וּבְשֶׁ֓בַע׀ yaṣ·ṣî·le·kā bə·šêš ṣā·rō·wṯ lō- rā‘ yig·ga‘ bə·ḵā ū·ḇə·še·ḇa‘WLC · 19

20

In famine He will redeem you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword.

𐤁𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤐𐤃𐤊 𐤌𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤇𐤓𐤁

בְּ֭רָעָב פָּֽדְךָ֣ מִמָּ֑וֶת וּ֝בְמִלְחָמָ֗ה מִ֣ידֵי חָֽרֶב׃ bə·rā·‘āḇ pā·ḏə·ḵā mim·mā·weṯ ū·ḇə·mil·ḥā·māh mî·ḏê ḥā·reḇWLC · 20

21

You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, and will not fear havoc when it comes.

𐤕𐤇𐤁𐤀 𐤁𐤔𐤅𐤈 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤌𐤔𐤃 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀

תֵּחָבֵ֑א בְּשׁ֣וֹט לָ֭שׁוֹן וְֽלֹא־ תִירָ֥א מִ֝שֹּׁ֗ד כִּ֣י יָבֽוֹא׃ tê·ḥā·ḇê bə·šō·wṭ lā·šō·wn wə·lō- ṯî·rā miš·šōḏ kî yā·ḇō·wWLC · 21

22

You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the beasts of the earth.

𐤕𐤔𐤇𐤒 𐤋𐤔𐤃 𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤐𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤌𐤇𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

תִּשְׂחָ֑ק לְשֹׁ֣ד וּלְכָפָ֣ן אַל־ תִּירָֽא׃ וּֽמֵחַיַּ֥ת הָ֝אָ֗רֶץ tiś·ḥāq lə·šōḏ ū·lə·ḵā·p̄ān ’al- tî·rā ū·mê·ḥay·yaṯ hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 22

23

For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you.

𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤊 𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤊

כִּ֤י בְרִיתֶ֑ךָ עִם־ אַבְנֵ֣י הַשָּׂדֶ֣ה הַ֝שָּׂדֶ֗ה וְחַיַּ֥ת הָשְׁלְמָה־ לָֽךְ׃ kî ḇə·rî·ṯe·ḵā ‘im- ’aḇ·nê haś·śā·ḏeh haś·śā·ḏeh wə·ḥay·yaṯ hā·šə·lə·māh- lāḵWLC · 23

24

You will know that your tent is secure, and find nothing amiss when inspecting your home.

𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤅𐤐𐤒𐤃𐤕 𐤍𐤅𐤊

וְֽ֭יָדַעְתָּ כִּי־ אָהֳלֶ֑ךָ שָׁל֣וֹם וְלֹ֣א תֶחֱטָֽא׃ וּֽפָקַדְתָּ֥ נָ֝וְךָ wə·yā·ḏa‘·tā kî- ’ā·ho·le·ḵā šā·lō·wm wə·lō ṯe·ḥĕ·ṭā ū·p̄ā·qaḏ·tā nā·wə·ḵāWLC · 24

25

You will know that your offspring will be many, your descendants like the grass of the earth.

𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤑𐤀𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤏𐤔𐤁 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

וְֽ֭יָדַעְתָּ כִּי־ זַרְעֶ֑ךָ רַ֣ב וְ֝צֶאֱצָאֶ֗יךָ כְּעֵ֣שֶׂב הָאָֽרֶץ׃ wə·yā·ḏa‘·tā kî- zar·‘e·ḵā raḇ wə·ṣe·’ĕ·ṣā·’e·ḵā kə·‘ê·śeḇ hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 25

26

You will come to the grave in full vigor, like a sheaf of grain gathered in season.

𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤒𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤊𐤋𐤇 𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤔 𐤊𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤅

תָּב֣וֹא אֱלֵי־ קָ֑בֶר בְכֶ֣לַח גָּדִ֣ישׁ כַּעֲל֖וֹת בְּעִתּֽוֹ׃ tā·ḇō·w ’ĕ·lê- qā·ḇer ḇə·ḵe·laḥ gā·ḏîš ka·‘ă·lō·wṯ bə·‘it·tōwWLC · 26

27

Indeed, we have investigated…, and it is true! So hear it and know for yourself.”
