The Perils of the Pilgrim

Why, O LORD, do You stand far off? Why do You hide in times of trouble?

לָמָ֣ה יְ֭הוָה תַּעֲמֹ֣ד בְּרָח֑וֹק תַּ֝עְלִ֗ים לְעִתּ֥וֹת בַּצָּרָֽה׃ lā·māh Yah·weh ta·‘ă·mōḏ bə·rā·ḥō·wq ta‘·lîm lə·‘it·tō·wṯ baṣ·ṣā·rāh — WLC · 1

In pride the wicked pursue the needy; let them be caught in the schemes… they devise.

בְּגַאֲוַ֣ת רָ֭שָׁע יִדְלַ֣ק עָנִ֑י יִתָּפְשׂ֓וּ׀ בִּמְזִמּ֖וֹת ז֣וּ חָשָֽׁבוּ׃ bə·ḡa·’ă·waṯ rā·šā‘ yiḏ·laq ‘ā·nî yit·tā·p̄ə·śū bim·zim·mō·wṯ zū ḥā·šā·ḇū — WLC · 2

For the wicked man boasts in the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.

כִּֽי־ רָ֭שָׁע הִלֵּ֣ל עַל־ תַּאֲוַ֣ת נַפְשׁ֑וֹ בֵּ֝רֵ֗ךְ וּבֹצֵ֥עַ נִ֘אֵ֥ץ׀ יְהוָֽה׃ kî- rā·šā‘ hil·lêl ‘al- ta·’ă·waṯ nap̄·šōw bê·rêḵ ū·ḇō·ṣê·a‘ ni·’êṣ Yah·weh — WLC · 3

In his pride… the wicked [man] does not seek [Him]; in all his schemes there is no God.

כְּגֹ֣בַהּ אַ֭פּוֹ רָשָׁ֗ע בַּל־ יִדְרֹ֑שׁ כָּל־ מְזִמּוֹתָֽיו׃ אֵ֥ין אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים kə·ḡō·ḇah ’ap·pōw rā·šā‘ bal- yiḏ·rōš kāl- mə·zim·mō·w·ṯāw ’ên ’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 4

He is secure in his ways at all times…; Your lofty judgments are far from him; he sneers at all his foes.

יָ֘חִ֤ילוּ דַרְכּוֹ בְּכָל־ עֵ֗ת מָר֣וֹם מִ֭שְׁפָּטֶיךָ מִנֶּגְדּ֑וֹ יָפִ֥יחַ בָּהֶֽם׃ כָּל־ צ֝וֹרְרָ֗יו yā·ḥî·lū ḏar·kō bə·ḵāl ‘êṯ mā·rō·wm miš·pā·ṭe·ḵā min·neḡ·dōw yā·p̄î·aḥ bā·hem kāl- ṣō·wr·rāw — WLC · 5

He says to himself, “I will not be moved; from age to age I am free of distress.”

אָמַ֣ר בְּ֭לִבּוֹ בַּל־ אֶמּ֑וֹט לְדֹ֥ר וָ֝דֹ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־ בְרָֽע׃ ’ā·mar bə·lib·bōw bal- ’em·mō·wṭ lə·ḏōr wā·ḏōr ’ă·šer lō- ḇə·rā‘ — WLC · 6

His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and violence; trouble and malice are under his tongue.

פִּ֣יהוּ מָ֭לֵא אָלָ֤ה וּמִרְמ֣וֹת וָתֹ֑ךְ עָמָ֥ל וָאָֽוֶן׃ תַּ֥חַת לְ֝שׁוֹנ֗וֹ pî·hū mā·lê ’ā·lāh ū·mir·mō·wṯ wā·ṯōḵ ‘ā·māl wā·’ā·wen ta·ḥaṯ lə·šō·w·nōw — WLC · 7

He lies in wait near the villages; in ambush he slays the innocent; his eyes watch in stealth for the helpless.

יֵשֵׁ֤ב׀ בְּמַאְרַ֬ב חֲצֵרִ֗ים בַּֽ֭מִּסְתָּרִים יַהֲרֹ֣ג נָקִ֑י עֵ֝ינָ֗יו יִצְפֹּֽנוּ׃ לְֽחֵלְכָ֥ה yê·šêḇ bə·ma’·raḇ ḥă·ṣê·rîm bam·mis·tā·rîm ya·hă·rōḡ nā·qî ‘ê·nāw yiṣ·pō·nū lə·ḥê·lə·ḵāh — WLC · 8

He lies in wait… like a lion in a thicket; he lurks to seize the oppressed; he catches the lowly in his net…

יֶאֱרֹ֬ב בַּמִּסְתָּ֨ר׀ כְּאַרְיֵ֬ה בְסֻכֹּ֗ה יֶ֭אֱרֹב לַחֲט֣וֹף עָנִ֑י יַחְטֹ֥ף עָ֝נִ֗י בְּמָשְׁכ֥וֹ בְרִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ ye·’ĕ·rōḇ bam·mis·tār kə·’ar·yêh ḇə·suk·kōh ye·’ĕ·rōḇ la·ḥă·ṭō·wp̄ ‘ā·nî yaḥ·ṭōp̄ ‘ā·nî bə·mā·šə·ḵōw ḇə·riš·tōw — WLC · 9

They are crushed and beaten down; the helpless fall prey to his strength.
𐤅𐤃𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤇 𐤇𐤋𐤊𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤑𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤅
וְדָכָה יָשֹׁ֑חַ חֶלְכָּאִים׃ וְנָפַ֥ל בַּ֝עֲצוּמָ֗יו wə·ḏå̄·ḵå̄h yā·šō·aḥ ḥɛl·kå̄·ʾīm wə·nā·p̄al ba·‘ă·ṣū·māw — WLC · 10

He says to himself, “God has forgotten; He hides His face and never… sees.”

אָמַ֣ר בְּ֭לִבּוֹ אֵ֑ל שָׁ֣כַֽח הִסְתִּ֥יר פָּ֝נָ֗יו בַּל־ לָנֶֽצַח׃ רָאָ֥ה ’ā·mar bə·lib·bōw ’êl šā·ḵaḥ his·tîr pā·nāw bal- lā·ne·ṣaḥ rā·’āh — WLC · 11

Arise, O LORD! Lift up Your hand, O God! Do not forget the helpless.

קוּמָ֤ה יְהוָ֗ה נְשָׂ֣א יָדֶ֑ךָ אֵ֭ל אַל־ תִּשְׁכַּ֥ח עֲנִיִּים׃ qū·māh Yah·weh nə·śā yā·ḏe·ḵā ’êl ’al- tiš·kaḥ ʿă·nī·yīm — WLC · 12

Why… has the wicked man renounced God? He says to himself, “You will never call [me] to account.”
𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤄 𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤍𐤀𐤑 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤋𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤃𐤓𐤔
עַל־ מֶ֤ה׀ רָשָׁ֥ע׀ נִאֵ֖ץ אֱלֹהִ֑ים אָמַ֥ר בְּ֝לִבּ֗וֹ לֹ֣א תִּדְרֹֽשׁ׃ ‘al- meh rā·šā‘ ni·’êṣ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ā·mar bə·lib·bōw lō tiḏ·rōš — WLC · 13
14
But You have regarded trouble and grief; You see to repay [it] by Your hand. The victim entrusts himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless.
𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤋 𐤅𐤊𐤏𐤎 𐤕𐤁𐤉𐤈 𐤋𐤕𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤇𐤋𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤁 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕 𐤏𐤅𐤆𐤓 𐤉𐤕𐤅𐤌
כִּֽי־ אַתָּ֤ה׀ רָאִ֡תָה עָ֘מָ֤ל וָכַ֨עַס׀ תַּבִּיט֮ לָתֵ֪ת בְּיָ֫דֶ֥ךָ חֵלֶ֑כָה יַעֲזֹ֣ב עָ֭לֶיךָ אַתָּ֤ה׀ הָיִ֬יתָ עוֹזֵֽר׃ יָ֝ת֗וֹם kî- ’at·tāh rā·’i·ṯāh ‘ā·māl wā·ḵa·‘as tab·bîṭ lā·ṯêṯ bə·yā·ḏe·ḵā ḥê·le·ḵāh ya·‘ă·zōḇ ‘ā·le·ḵā ’at·tāh hā·yî·ṯā ‘ō·w·zêr yā·ṯō·wm — WLC · 14

Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call him to account for his wickedness until none is left to be found.

שְׁ֭בֹר זְר֣וֹעַ רָשָׁ֑ע וָ֝רָ֗ע תִּֽדְרוֹשׁ־ רִשְׁע֥וֹ בַל־ תִּמְצָֽא׃ šə·b̲ōr zə·rō·w·a‘ rā·šā‘ wā·rā‘ tiḏ·rō·wōš- riš·‘ōw ḇal- tim·ṣā — WLC · 15

The LORD is King forever and ever; the nations perish from His land.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅
יְהוָ֣ה מֶ֭לֶךְ עוֹלָ֣ם וָעֶ֑ד ג֝וֹיִ֗ם אָבְד֥וּ מֵֽאַרְצֽוֹ׃ Yah·weh me·leḵ ‘ō·w·lām wā·‘eḏ ḡō·w·yim ’ā·ḇə·ḏū mê·’ar·ṣōw — WLC · 16
17
You have heard, O LORD, the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their hearts. You will incline Your ear,
𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤍𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤊𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤁𐤌 𐤕𐤒𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤊
שָׁמַ֣עְתָּ יְהוָ֑ה תַּאֲוַ֬ת עֲנָוִ֣ים תָּכִ֥ין לִ֝בָּ֗ם תַּקְשִׁ֥יב אָזְנֶֽךָ׃ šā·ma‘·tā Yah·weh ta·’ă·waṯ ‘ă·nā·wîm tā·ḵîn lib·bām taq·šîḇ ’ā·zə·ne·ḵā — WLC · 17

to vindicate the fatherless and oppressed, that the men of the earth may strike terror no more…

לִשְׁפֹּ֥ט יָת֗וֹם וָ֫דָ֥ךְ אֱ֝נ֗וֹשׁ מִן־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ לַעֲרֹ֥ץ בַּל־ יוֹסִ֥יף ע֑וֹד liš·pōṭ yā·ṯō·wm wā·ḏāḵ ’ĕ·nō·wōš min- hā·’ā·reṣ la·‘ă·rōṣ bal- yō·w·sîp̄ ‘ō·wḏ — WLC · 18
