Give Thanks to the LORD, for He Is Good

Hallelujah! Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;… His loving devotion endures forever…

Who can describe the mighty acts of the LORD or fully proclaim… His praise?

Blessed [are] those who uphold justice, who practice righteousness at all times.

Remember me, O LORD, in [Your] favor to Your people; visit me with Your salvation,

זָכְרֵ֣נִי יְ֭הוָה בִּרְצ֣וֹן עַמֶּ֑ךָ פָּ֝קְדֵ֗נִי בִּישׁוּעָתֶֽךָ׃ zā·ḵə·rê·nî Yah·weh bir·ṣō·wn ‘am·me·ḵā pā·qə·ḏê·nî bî·šū·‘ā·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 4

that I may see the prosperity of Your chosen ones, and rejoice in the gladness of Your nation, and give glory with Your inheritance.

לִרְא֤וֹת׀ בְּט֘וֹבַ֤ת בְּחִירֶ֗יךָ לִ֭שְׂמֹחַ בְּשִׂמְחַ֣ת גּוֹיֶ֑ךָ לְ֝הִתְהַלֵּ֗ל עִם־ נַחֲלָתֶֽךָ׃ lir·’ō·wṯ bə·ṭō·w·ḇaṯ bə·ḥî·re·ḵā liś·mō·aḥ bə·śim·ḥaṯ gō·w·ye·ḵā lə·hiṯ·hal·lêl ‘im- na·ḥă·lā·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 5

We have sinned like our fathers; we have done wrong [and] acted wickedly.
𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤏𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤍𐤅
חָטָ֥אנוּ עִם־ אֲבוֹתֵ֗ינוּ הֶעֱוִ֥ינוּ הִרְשָֽׁעְנוּ׃ ḥā·ṭā·nū ‘im- ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·nū he·‘ĕ·wî·nū hir·šā·‘ə·nū — WLC · 6

Our fathers in Egypt did not grasp Your wonders… or remember Your abundant kindness; but they rebelled by the sea, [there] at the Red Sea.

אֲב֘וֹתֵ֤ינוּ בְמִצְרַ֨יִם׀ לֹא־ הִשְׂכִּ֬ילוּ נִפְלְאוֹתֶ֗יךָ לֹ֣א זָ֭כְרוּ אֶת־ רֹ֣ב חֲסָדֶ֑יךָ וַיַּמְר֖וּ עַל־ יָ֣ם סֽוּף׃ בְּיַם־ ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·nū ḇə·miṣ·ra·yim lō- hiś·kî·lū nip̄·lə·’ō·w·ṯe·ḵā lō zā·ḵə·rū ’eṯ- rōḇ ḥă·sā·ḏe·ḵā way·yam·rū ‘al- yām sūp̄ bə·yam- — WLC · 7

Yet He saved them for the sake of His name, to make His power known. -

וַֽ֭יּוֹשִׁיעֵם לְמַ֣עַן שְׁמ֑וֹ גְּבוּרָתֽוֹ׃ לְ֝הוֹדִ֗יעַ אֶת־ way·yō·wō·šî·‘êm lə·ma·‘an šə·mōw gə·ḇū·rā·ṯōw lə·hō·w·ḏî·a‘ ’eṯ- — WLC · 8

He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up; He led them through the depths as through a desert.

וַיִּגְעַ֣ר ס֭וּף בְּיַם־ וַֽיֶּחֱרָ֑ב וַיּוֹלִיכֵ֥ם בַּ֝תְּהֹמ֗וֹת כַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ way·yiḡ·‘ar sūp̄ bə·yam- way·ye·ḥĕ·rāḇ way·yō·w·lî·ḵêm bat·tə·hō·mō·wṯ kam·miḏ·bār — WLC · 9

He saved them from the hand that hated them; He redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.

וַֽ֭יּוֹשִׁיעֵם מִיַּ֣ד שׂוֹנֵ֑א וַ֝יִּגְאָלֵ֗ם מִיַּ֥ד אוֹיֵֽב׃ way·yō·wō·šî·‘êm mî·yaḏ śō·w·nê way·yiḡ·’ā·lêm mî·yaḏ ’ō·w·yêḇ — WLC · 10

The waters covered their foes; not one of them remained.
𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤎𐤅 𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤌𐤄𐤌 𐤍𐤅𐤕𐤓
מַ֥יִם וַיְכַסּוּ־ צָרֵיהֶ֑ם לֹ֣א אֶחָ֥ד מֵ֝הֶ֗ם נוֹתָֽר׃ ma·yim way·ḵas·sū- ṣā·rê·hem lō ’e·ḥāḏ mê·hem nō·w·ṯār — WLC · 11

Then they believed His promises [and] sang His praise.
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤕𐤅
וַיַּאֲמִ֥ינוּ בִדְבָרָ֑יו יָ֝שִׁ֗ירוּ תְּהִלָּתֽוֹ׃ way·ya·’ă·mî·nū ḇiḏ·ḇā·rāw yā·šî·rū tə·hil·lā·ṯōw — WLC · 12

[Yet] they soon forgot His works and failed to wait for His counsel.
𐤌𐤄𐤓𐤅 𐤔𐤊𐤇𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤇𐤊𐤅 𐤋𐤏𐤑𐤕𐤅
מִֽ֭הֲרוּ שָׁכְח֣וּ מַעֲשָׂ֑יו לֹֽא־ חִ֝כּ֗וּ לַעֲצָתֽוֹ׃ mi·hă·rū šā·ḵə·ḥū ma·‘ă·śāw lō- ḥik·kū la·‘ă·ṣā·ṯōw — WLC · 13

They craved intensely in the wilderness and tested God in the desert.
𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤅 𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤍
וַיִּתְאַוּ֣וּ תַ֭אֲוָה בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וַיְנַסּוּ־ אֵ֝֗ל בִּֽישִׁימֽוֹן׃ way·yiṯ·’aw·wū ṯa·’ă·wāh bam·miḏ·bār way·nas·sū- ’êl bî·šî·mō·wn — WLC · 14

So He granted their request, but sent a wasting disease upon them.
𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤓𐤆𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤌
וַיִּתֵּ֣ן לָ֭הֶם שֶׁאֱלָתָ֑ם וַיְשַׁלַּ֖ח רָז֣וֹן בְּנַפְשָֽׁם׃ way·yit·tên lā·hem še·’ĕ·lā·ṯām way·šal·laḥ rā·zō·wn bə·nap̄·šām — WLC · 15

In the camp they envied Moses, as well as Aaron, the holy one of the LORD.
𐤁𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
בַּֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה וַיְקַנְא֣וּ לְ֭מֹשֶׁה לְ֝אַהֲרֹ֗ן קְד֣וֹשׁ יְהוָֽה׃ bam·ma·ḥă·neh way·qan·’ū lə·mō·šeh lə·’a·hă·rōn qə·ḏō·wōš Yah·weh — WLC · 16

The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it covered… the assembly of Abiram.
𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤕𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤋𐤏 𐤃𐤕𐤍 𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤎 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤃𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤌
אֶ֭רֶץ תִּפְתַּח־ וַתִּבְלַ֣ע דָּתָ֑ן וַ֝תְּכַ֗ס עַל־ עֲדַ֥ת אֲבִירָֽם׃ ’e·reṣ tip̄·taḥ- wat·tiḇ·la‘ dā·ṯān wat·tə·ḵas ‘al- ‘ă·ḏaṯ ’ă·ḇî·rām — WLC · 17

Then fire blazed through their company; flames consumed the wicked.
𐤀𐤔 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤏𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤃𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤄 𐤕𐤋𐤄𐤈 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌
אֵ֥שׁ וַתִּבְעַר־ בַּעֲדָתָ֑ם לֶ֝הָבָ֗ה תְּלַהֵ֥ט רְשָׁעִֽים׃ ’êš wat·tiḇ·‘ar- ba·‘ă·ḏā·ṯām le·hā·ḇāh tə·la·hêṭ rə·šā·‘îm — WLC · 18

At Horeb they made a calf and worshiped a molten image.
𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤏𐤂𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤎𐤊𐤄
בְּחֹרֵ֑ב יַעֲשׂוּ־ עֵ֥גֶל וַ֝יִּשְׁתַּחֲו֗וּ לְמַסֵּכָֽה׃ bə·ḥō·rêḇ ya·‘ă·śū- ‘ê·ḡel way·yiš·ta·ḥă·wū lə·mas·sê·ḵāh — WLC · 19

They exchanged their Glory for the image of a grass-eating… ox.
𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃𐤌 𐤁𐤕𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤔𐤁 𐤔𐤅𐤓
וַיָּמִ֥ירוּ אֶת־ כְּבוֹדָ֑ם בְּתַבְנִ֥ית אֹכֵ֥ל עֵֽשֶׂב׃ שׁ֥וֹר way·yā·mî·rū ’eṯ- kə·ḇō·w·ḏām bə·ṯaḇ·nîṯ ’ō·ḵêl ‘ê·śeḇ šō·wr — WLC · 20

They forgot God their Savior, who did great things in Egypt,
𐤔𐤊𐤇𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌
שָׁ֭כְחוּ אֵ֣ל מוֹשִׁיעָ֑ם עֹשֶׂ֖ה גְדֹל֣וֹת בְּמִצְרָֽיִם׃ šā·k̲ə·ḥû ’êl mō·wō·šî·‘ām ‘ō·śeh ḡə·ḏō·lō·wṯ bə·miṣ·rā·yim — WLC · 21

wondrous works in the land of Ham, [and] awesome deeds by the Red Sea.

נִ֭פְלָאוֹת בְּאֶ֣רֶץ חָ֑ם נ֝וֹרָא֗וֹת עַל־ סֽוּף׃ יַם־ nip̄·lā·’ō·wṯ bə·’e·reṣ ḥām nō·w·rā·’ō·wṯ ‘al- sūp̄ yam- — WLC · 22

So He said He would destroy them— had not Moses His chosen one stood before Him in the breach to divert His wrath from destroying them.

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לְֽהַשְׁמִ֫ידָ֥ם לוּלֵ֡י מֹ֘שֶׁ֤ה בְחִיר֗וֹ עָמַ֣ד לְפָנָ֑יו בַּפֶּ֣רֶץ לְהָשִׁ֥יב חֲ֝מָת֗וֹ מֵֽהַשְׁחִֽית׃ way·yō·mer lə·haš·mî·ḏām lū·lê mō·šeh ḇə·ḥî·rōw ‘ā·maḏ lə·p̄ā·nāw bap·pe·reṣ lə·hā·šîḇ ḥă·mā·ṯōw mê·haš·ḥîṯ — WLC · 23

They despised the pleasant land; they did not believe His promise.

וַֽ֭יִּמְאֲסוּ חֶמְדָּ֑ה בְּאֶ֣רֶץ לֹֽא־ הֶ֝אֱמִ֗ינוּ לִדְבָרֽוֹ׃ way·yim·’ă·sū ḥem·dāh bə·’e·reṣ lō- he·’ĕ·mî·nū liḏ·ḇā·rōw — WLC · 24

They grumbled in their tents and did not listen to the voice of the LORD.

וַיֵּרָגְנ֥וּ בְאָהֳלֵיהֶ֑ם לֹ֥א שָׁ֝מְע֗וּ בְּק֣וֹל יְהוָֽה׃ way·yê·rā·ḡə·nū ḇə·’ā·ho·lê·hem lō šā·mə·ʿû bə·qō·wl Yah·weh — WLC · 25

So He raised His hand {and swore} to cast them down in the wilderness,
𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤐𐤉𐤋 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓
וַיִּשָּׂ֣א יָד֣וֹ לָהֶ֑ם לְהַפִּ֥יל א֝וֹתָ֗ם בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ way·yiś·śā yā·ḏōw lā·hem lə·hap·pîl ’ō·w·ṯām bam·miḏ·bār — WLC · 26

to disperse their offspring among the nations and scatter them throughout the lands.
𐤅𐤋𐤄𐤐𐤉𐤋 𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤌 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤆𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕
וּלְהַפִּ֣יל זַ֭רְעָם בַּגּוֹיִ֑ם וּ֝לְזָרוֹתָ֗ם בָּאֲרָצֽוֹת׃ ū·lə·hap·pîl zar·‘ām bag·gō·w·yim ū·lə·zā·rō·w·ṯām bā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ — WLC · 27

They yoked themselves vvv to Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods.
𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤏𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤉 𐤌𐤕𐤉𐤌
וַ֭יִּצָּ֣מְדוּ לְבַ֣עַל פְּע֑וֹר וַ֝יֹּאכְל֗וּ זִבְחֵ֥י מֵתִֽים׃ way·yiṣ·ṣā·mə·ḏū lə·ḇa·‘al pə·‘ō·wr way·yō·ḵə·lū ziḇ·ḥê mê·ṯîm — WLC · 28

So they provoked [the LORD] to anger with their deeds, and a plague broke out among them.
𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤏𐤉𐤎𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤂𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤐𐤓𐤑 𐤁𐤌
וַ֭יַּכְעִיסוּ בְּמַֽעַלְלֵיהֶ֑ם מַגֵּפָֽה׃ וַתִּפְרָץ־ בָּ֝֗ם way·yaḵ·‘î·sū bə·ma·‘al·lê·hem mag·gê·p̄āh wat·tip̄·rāṣ- bām — WLC · 29

But Phinehas stood and intervened, and the plague was restrained.
𐤐𐤉𐤍𐤇𐤎 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤋𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤂𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤏𐤑𐤓
פִּֽ֭ינְחָס וַיַּעֲמֹ֣ד וַיְפַלֵּ֑ל הַמַּגֵּפָֽה׃ וַ֝תֵּעָצַ֗ר pî·nə·ḥās way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ way·p̄al·lêl ham·mag·gê·p̄āh wat·tê·‘ā·ṣar — WLC · 30

It was credited to him as righteousness for endless… generations to come.

וַתֵּחָ֣שֶׁב ל֭וֹ לִצְדָקָ֑ה לְדֹ֥ר עוֹלָֽם׃ וָ֝דֹ֗ר עַד־ wat·tê·ḥā·šeḇ lōw liṣ·ḏā·qāh lə·ḏōr ‘ō·w·lām wā·ḏōr ‘aḏ- — WLC · 31

At the waters of Meribah they angered the LORD, and trouble came to Moses because of them.
𐤌𐤉 𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤑𐤉𐤐𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤏 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤌
מֵ֥י מְרִיבָ֑ה וַ֭יַּקְצִיפוּ עַל־ וַיֵּ֥רַע לְ֝מֹשֶׁ֗ה בַּעֲבוּרָֽם׃ mê mə·rî·ḇāh way·yaq·ṣî·p̄ū ‘al- way·yê·ra‘ lə·mō·šeh ba·‘ă·ḇū·rām — WLC · 32

For they rebelled against His Spirit, and [Moses] spoke rashly with his lips.

כִּֽי־ הִמְר֥וּ אֶת־ רוּח֑וֹ וַ֝יְבַטֵּ֗א בִּשְׂפָתָֽיו׃ kî- him·rū ’eṯ- rū·ḥōw way·ḇaṭ·ṭê biś·p̄ā·ṯāw — WLC · 33

They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded them,
𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤌
לֹֽא־ הִ֭שְׁמִידוּ אֶת־ הָֽעַמִּ֑ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר יְהוָ֣ה אָמַ֖ר לָהֶֽם׃ lō- hiš·mî·ḏū ’eṯ- hā·‘am·mîm ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ā·mar lā·hem — WLC · 34

but they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs.

וַיִּתְעָרְב֥וּ בַגּוֹיִ֑ם וַֽ֝יִּלְמְד֗וּ מַֽעֲשֵׂיהֶֽם׃ way·yiṯ·‘ā·rə·ḇū ḇag·gō·w·yim way·yil·mə·ḏū ma·‘ă·śê·hem — WLC · 35

They worshiped their idols, which became… a snare to them.

וַיַּעַבְד֥וּ אֶת־ עֲצַבֵּיהֶ֑ם וַיִּהְי֖וּ לָהֶ֣ם לְמוֹקֵֽשׁ׃ way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏū ’eṯ- ‘ă·ṣab·bê·hem way·yih·yū lā·hem lə·mō·w·qêš — WLC · 36

They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons.

וַיִּזְבְּח֣וּ אֶת־ בְּ֭נֵיהֶם וְאֶת־ בְּנֽוֹתֵיהֶ֗ם לַשֵּֽׁדִים׃ way·yiz·bə·ḥū ’eṯ- bə·nê·hem wə·’eṯ- bə·nō·w·ṯê·hem laš·šê·ḏîm — WLC · 37

They shed innocent blood— the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood.

וַיִּֽשְׁפְּכ֨וּ נָקִ֡י דָ֪ם דַּם־ בְּנֵ֘יהֶ֤ם וּֽבְנוֹתֵיהֶ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר זִ֭בְּחוּ לַעֲצַבֵּ֣י כְנָ֑עַן הָ֝אָ֗רֶץ וַתֶּחֱנַ֥ף בַּדָּמִֽים׃ way·yiš·pə·ḵū nā·qî ḏām dam- bə·nê·hem ū·ḇə·nō·w·ṯê·hem ’ă·šer zib·bə·ḥū la·‘ă·ṣab·bê ḵə·nā·‘an hā·’ā·reṣ wat·te·ḥĕ·nap̄ bad·dā·mîm — WLC · 38

They defiled themselves by their actions and prostituted themselves by their deeds.

וַיִּטְמְא֥וּ בְמַעֲשֵׂיהֶ֑ם וַ֝יִּזְנוּ֗ בְּמַֽעַלְלֵיהֶֽם׃ way·yiṭ·mə·’ū ḇə·ma·‘ă·śê·hem way·yiz·nū bə·ma·‘al·lê·hem — WLC · 39

So the anger of the LORD burned against His people, and He abhorred His own inheritance.

אַ֣ף יְהוָ֣ה וַיִּֽחַר־ בְּעַמּ֑וֹ וַ֝יְתָעֵ֗ב אֶת־ נַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃ ’ap̄ Yah·weh way·yi·ḥar- bə·‘am·mōw way·ṯā·‘êḇ ’eṯ- na·ḥă·lā·ṯōw — WLC · 40

He delivered them into the hand of the nations, and those who hated them ruled over them.

Their enemies oppressed them and subdued them under their hand.

Many times He rescued them, but they were bent on rebellion and sank down in their iniquity.

רַבּ֗וֹת פְּעָמִ֥ים יַצִּ֫ילֵ֥ם וְ֭הֵמָּה יַמְר֣וּ בַעֲצָתָ֑ם וַ֝יָּמֹ֗כּוּ בַּעֲוֺנָֽם׃ rab·bō·wṯ pə·‘ā·mîm yaṣ·ṣî·lêm wə·hêm·māh yam·rū ḇa·‘ă·ṣā·ṯām way·yā·mōk·kū ba·‘ă·wō·nām — WLC · 43

Nevertheless He heard their cry; He took note of their distress…

בְּ֝שָׁמְע֗וֹ אֶת־ רִנָּתָֽם׃ וַ֭יַּרְא בַּצַּ֣ר לָהֶ֑ם bə·šā·mə·‘ōw ’eṯ- rin·nā·ṯām way·yar baṣ·ṣar lā·hem — WLC · 44

And He remembered His covenant with them, and relented by the abundance of His loving devotion.

וַיִּזְכֹּ֣ר בְּרִית֑וֹ לָהֶ֣ם וַ֝יִּנָּחֵ֗ם כְּרֹ֣ב חַסְדּוֹ׃ way·yiz·kōr bə·rî·ṯōw lā·hem way·yin·nā·ḥêm kə·rōḇ ḥas·dō — WLC · 45

He made them objects of compassion to all who held them captive.

Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from the nations, that we may give thanks to Your holy name, that we may glory in Your praise.

Blessed [be] the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Let all the people say, “Amen!” Hallelujah…!
