The Cords of the Wicked

A song of ascents. 1Many a time they have persecuted me from my youth— let Israel now declare—

שִׁ֗יר הַֽמַּ֫עֲל֥וֹת רַ֭בַּת צְרָר֣וּנִי מִנְּעוּרַ֑י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ נָ֝א יֹֽאמַר־ šîr ham·ma·‘ă·lō·wṯ rab·baṯ ṣə·rā·rū·nî min·nə·‘ū·ray yiś·rā·’êl nā yō·mar- — WLC · 1

many a time they have persecuted me from my youth, but they have not prevailed against me.

The plowmen plowed over my back; they made their furrows long.

חָרְשׁ֣וּ חֹרְשִׁ֑ים עַל־ גַּ֭בִּי לְמַעֲנוֹתָם׃ הֶ֝אֱרִ֗יכוּ ḥā·rə·šū ḥō·rə·šîm ‘al- gab·bî lə·ma·ʿă·nō·ṯå̄m he·’ĕ·rî·ḵū — WLC · 3

The LORD is righteous; He has cut me from the cords of the wicked.

יְהוָ֥ה צַדִּ֑יק קִ֝צֵּ֗ץ עֲב֣וֹת רְשָׁעִֽים׃ Yah·weh ṣad·dîq qiṣ·ṣêṣ ‘ă·ḇō·wṯ rə·šā·‘îm — WLC · 4

May all who hate Zion be turned back in shame.

כֹּ֝֗ל שֹׂנְאֵ֥י צִיּֽוֹן׃ וְיִסֹּ֣גוּ אָח֑וֹר יֵ֭בֹשׁוּ kōl śō·nə·’ê ṣî·yō·wn wə·yis·sō·ḡū ’ā·ḥō·wr yê·ḇō·šū — WLC · 5

May they be like grass on the rooftops, which withers before it can grow,

יִ֭הְיוּ כַּחֲצִ֣יר גַּגּ֑וֹת יָבֵֽשׁ׃ שֶׁקַּדְמַ֖ת שָׁלַ֣ף yih·yū ka·ḥă·ṣîr gag·gō·wṯ yā·ḇêš šeq·qaḏ·maṯ šā·lap̄ — WLC · 6

unable to fill the hands of the reaper, or the arms of the binder of sheaves.

שֶׁלֹּ֤א מִלֵּ֖א כַפּ֥וֹ קוֹצֵ֗ר וְחִצְנ֥וֹ מְעַמֵּֽר׃ šel·lō mil·lê ḵap·pōw qō·w·ṣêr wə·ḥiṣ·nōw mə·‘am·mêr — WLC · 7

May none who pass by say [to them], “The blessing of the LORD be on you; we bless you in the name of the LORD.”
