You Have Searched Me and Known Me

For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 1O LORD, You have searched me and known me.

You know when I sit and when I rise; You understand my thoughts from afar.

אַתָּ֣ה יָ֭דַעְתָּ שִׁבְתִּ֣י וְקוּמִ֑י בַּ֥נְתָּה לְ֝רֵעִ֗י מֵרָחֽוֹק׃ ’at·tāh yā·ḏa‘·tā šiḇ·tî wə·qū·mî ban·tāh lə·rê·‘î mê·rā·ḥō·wq — WLC · 2

You search out my path and my lying down; You are aware of all my ways.

Even… before a word is on my tongue,… You know all about it, O LORD.

כִּ֤י אֵ֣ין מִ֭לָּה בִּלְשׁוֹנִ֑י הֵ֥ן יָדַ֥עְתָּ כֻלָּֽהּ׃ יְ֝הוָ֗ה kî ’ên mil·lāh bil·šō·w·nî hên yā·ḏa‘·tā ḵul·lāh Yah·weh — WLC · 4

You hem me in behind and before; You have laid Your hand upon me.

צַרְתָּ֑נִי אָח֣וֹר וָקֶ֣דֶם וַתָּ֖שֶׁת כַּפֶּֽכָה׃ עָלַ֣י ṣar·tā·nî ’ā·ḥō·wr wā·qe·ḏem wat·tā·šeṯ kap·pe·ḵāh ‘ā·lay — WLC · 5

[Such] knowledge [is] too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain

דַ֣עַת פִּלְאִיָּה מִמֶּ֑נִּי נִ֝שְׂגְּבָ֗ה לֹא־ א֥וּכַֽל לָֽהּ׃ ḏa·‘aṯ pil·ʾī·yå̄h mim·men·nî niś·gə·ḇāh lō- ’ū·ḵal lāh — WLC · 6

Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence?

אָ֭נָ֥ה אֵלֵ֣ךְ מֵרוּחֶ֑ךָ וְ֝אָ֗נָה אֶבְרָֽח׃ מִפָּנֶ֥יךָ ’ā·nāh ’ê·lêḵ mê·rū·ḥe·ḵā wə·’ā·nāh ’eḇ·rāḥ mip·pā·ne·ḵā — WLC · 7

If I ascend to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there.
𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤎𐤒 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤑𐤉𐤏𐤄 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤊
אִם־ אֶסַּ֣ק שָׁ֭מַיִם אָ֑תָּה שָׁ֣ם וְאַצִּ֖יעָה שְּׁא֣וֹל הִנֶּֽךָּ׃ ’im- ’es·saq šā·ma·yim ’āt·tāh šām wə·’aṣ·ṣî·‘āh šə·’ō·wl hin·ne·kā — WLC · 8

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle by the farthest sea,
𐤀𐤔𐤀 𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉 𐤔𐤇𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤊𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤌
אֶשָּׂ֥א כַנְפֵי־ שָׁ֑חַר אֶ֝שְׁכְּנָ֗ה בְּאַחֲרִ֥ית יָֽם׃ ’eś·śā ḵan·p̄ê- šā·ḥar ’eš·kə·nāh bə·’a·ḥă·rîṯ yām — WLC · 9

even there Your hand will guide me; Your right hand will hold me fast.

גַּם־ שָׁ֭ם יָדְךָ֣ תַנְחֵ֑נִי יְמִינֶֽךָ׃ וְֽתֹאחֲזֵ֥נִי ga·mō·šā- šām yā·ḏə·ḵā ṯan·ḥê·nî yə·mî·ne·ḵā wə·ṯō·ḥă·zê·nî — WLC · 10

If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light become night around me”—

וָ֭אֹמַר אַךְ־ חֹ֣שֶׁךְ יְשׁוּפֵ֑נִי א֣וֹר וְ֝לַ֗יְלָה בַּעֲדֵֽנִי׃ wā·’ō·mar ’aḵ- ḥō·šeḵ yə·šū·p̄ê·nî ’ō·wr wə·lay·lāh ba·‘ă·ḏê·nî — WLC · 11

even the darkness is not dark to You, but the night shines like the day, for darkness is as light to You.

גַּם־ חֹשֶׁךְ֮ לֹֽא־ יַחְשִׁ֪יךְ מִ֫מֶּ֥ךָ וְ֭לַיְלָה יָאִ֑יר כַּיּ֣וֹם כַּ֝חֲשֵׁיכָ֗ה כָּאוֹרָֽה׃ gam- ḥō·šeḵ lō- yaḥ·šîḵ mim·me·ḵā wə·lay·lāh yā·’îr kay·yō·wm ka·ḥă·šê·ḵāh kā·’ō·w·rāh — WLC · 12

For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤕𐤎𐤊𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤉 𐤁𐤁𐤈𐤍
כִּֽי־ אַ֭תָּה קָנִ֣יתָ כִלְיֹתָ֑י תְּ֝סֻכֵּ֗נִי אִמִּֽי׃ בְּבֶ֣טֶן kî- ’at·tāh qā·nî·ṯā ḵil·yō·ṯāy tə·suk·kê·nî ’im·mî bə·ḇe·ṭen — WLC · 13

I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous [are] Your works, and I know this very well.

אֽוֹדְךָ֗ עַ֤ל כִּ֥י נוֹרָא֗וֹת נִ֫פְלֵ֥יתִי נִפְלָאִ֥ים מַעֲשֶׂ֑יךָ וְ֝נַפְשִׁ֗י יֹדַ֥עַת מְאֹֽד׃ ’ō·wḏ·ḵā ‘al kî nō·w·rā·’ō·wṯ nip̄·lê·ṯî nip̄·lā·’îm ma·‘ă·śe·ḵā wə·nap̄·šî yō·ḏa·‘aṯ mə·’ōḏ — WLC · 14

My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

עָצְמִ֗י לֹא־ נִכְחַ֥ד מִ֫מֶּ֥ךָּ אֲשֶׁר־ עֻשֵּׂ֥יתִי בַסֵּ֑תֶר רֻ֝קַּ֗מְתִּי בְּֽתַחְתִּיּ֥וֹת אָֽרֶץ׃ ‘ā·ṣə·mî lō- niḵ·ḥaḏ mim·me·kā ’ă·šer- ‘uś·śê·ṯî ḇas·sê·ṯer ruq·qam·tî bə·ṯaḥ·tî·yō·wṯ ’ā·reṣ — WLC · 15

Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written in Your book and ordained for me… before one of them came to be

עֵינֶ֗יךָ רָ֘א֤וּ גָּלְמִ֤י׀ כֻּלָּ֪ם יָמִ֥ים יִכָּ֫תֵ֥בוּ וְעַֽל־ סִפְרְךָ֮ יֻצָּ֑רוּ וְלֹא אֶחָ֣ד בָּהֶֽם׃ ‘ê·ne·ḵā rā·’ū gā·lə·mî kul·lām yā·mîm yik·kā·ṯê·ḇū wə·‘al- sip̄·rə·ḵā yuṣ·ṣā·rū wə·lō ’e·ḥāḏ bā·hem — WLC · 16

How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God, how vast is their sum!
𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤅 𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤌
וְלִ֗י מַה־ יָּקְר֣וּ רֵעֶ֣יךָ אֵ֑ל מֶ֥ה עָ֝צְמוּ רָאשֵׁיהֶֽם׃ wə·lî mah- yā·qə·rū rê·‘e·ḵā ’êl meh ‘ā·ṣə·mū rā·šê·hem — WLC · 17

[If] I were to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; and when I awake, I am still with You.

אֶ֭סְפְּרֵם יִרְבּ֑וּן מֵח֣וֹל הֱ֝קִיצֹ֗תִי וְעוֹדִ֥י עִמָּֽךְ׃ ’es·pə·rêm yir·būn mê·ḥō·wl hĕ·qî·ṣō·ṯî wə·‘ō·w·ḏî ‘im·māḵ — WLC · 18

O God, that You would slay the wicked— away from me, you bloodthirsty men—
𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤄 𐤕𐤒𐤈𐤋 𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤎𐤅𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤃𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉
אִם־ אֱל֥וֹהַּ׀ תִּקְטֹ֖ל רָשָׁ֑ע ס֣וּרוּ מֶֽנִּי׃ דָ֝מִ֗ים וְאַנְשֵׁ֥י ’im- ’ĕ·lō·w·ah tiq·ṭōl rā·šā‘ sū·rū men·nî ḏā·mîm wə·’an·šê — WLC · 19

who speak of You deceitfully; Your enemies take [Your name] in vain.

אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֹ֭אמְרֻךָ לִמְזִמָּ֑ה עָרֶֽיךָ׃ נָשֻׂ֖א לַשָּׁ֣וְא ’ă·šer yō·mə·ru·ḵā lim·zim·māh ‘ā·re·ḵā nā·śu laš·šāw — WLC · 20

Do I not hate those who hate You, O LORD, and detest those who rise against You?

הֲלֽוֹא־ מְשַׂנְאֶ֖יךָ אֶשְׂנָ֑א יְהוָ֥ה׀ אֶתְקוֹטָֽט׃ וּ֝בִתְקוֹמְמֶ֗יךָ hă·lō·w- mə·śan·’e·ḵā ’eś·nā Yah·weh ’eṯ·qō·w·ṭāṭ ū·ḇiṯ·qō·wm·me·ḵā — WLC · 21

I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them as my enemies

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns.

See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the way everlasting.
