The Joy of Forgiveness

Of David. A Maskil. 1Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
𐤋𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤉𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤐𐤔𐤏 𐤍𐤔𐤅𐤉 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤄 𐤊𐤎𐤅𐤉
לְדָוִ֗ד מַ֫שְׂכִּ֥יל אַשְׁרֵ֥י פֶּ֗שַׁע נְֽשׂוּי־ חֲטָאָֽה׃ כְּס֣וּי lə·ḏā·wiḏ maś·kîl ’aš·rê pe·ša‘ nə·śui- ḥă·ṭā·’āh kə·sui — WLC · 1

Blessed is the man whose iniquity the LORD does not count against him, in whose spirit there is no deceit.

אַ֥שְֽׁרֵי אָדָ֗ם עָוֺ֑ן יְהוָ֣ה לֹ֤א יַחְשֹׁ֬ב ל֣וֹ בְּרוּח֣וֹ וְאֵ֖ין רְמִיָּה׃ ’aš·rê ’ā·ḏām ‘ā·wōn Yah·weh lō yaḥ·šōḇ lōw bə·rū·ḥōw wə·’ên rə·mī·yå̄h — WLC · 2

When I kept silent, my bones became brittle from my groaning all day long…
𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤉 𐤁𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤀𐤂𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌
כִּֽי־ הֶ֭חֱרַשְׁתִּי עֲצָמָ֑י בָּל֣וּ בְּ֝שַׁאֲגָתִ֗י כָּל־ הַיּֽוֹם׃ kî- he·ḥĕ·raš·tî ‘ă·ṣā·māy bā·lū bə·ša·’ă·ḡā·ṯî kāl- hay·yō·wm — WLC · 3

For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was drained as in the summer heat. Selah

כִּ֤י׀ יוֹמָ֣ם וָלַיְלָה֮ יָ֫דֶ֥ךָ תִּכְבַּ֥ד עָלַ֗י לְשַׁדִּ֑י נֶהְפַּ֥ךְ קַ֣יִץ בְּחַרְבֹ֖נֵי סֶֽלָה׃ kî yō·w·mām wā·lay·lāh yā·ḏe·ḵā tiḵ·baḏ ‘ā·lay lə·šad·dî neh·paḵ qa·yiṣ bə·ḥar·ḇō·nê se·lāh — WLC · 4

Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not hide my iniquity. I said, “I will confess… my transgressions to the LORD,” and You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah

אוֹדִ֪יעֲךָ֡ חַטָּאתִ֨י לֹֽא־ כִסִּ֗יתִי וַעֲוֺ֘נִ֤י אָמַ֗רְתִּי אוֹדֶ֤ה עֲלֵ֣י פְ֭שָׁעַי לַיהוָ֑ה וְאַתָּ֨ה נָ֘שָׂ֤אתָ עֲוֺ֖ן חַטָּאתִ֣י סֶֽלָה׃ ’ō·w·ḏî·‘ă·ḵā ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯî lō- ḵis·sî·ṯî wa·‘ă·wō·nî ’ā·mar·tî ’ō·w·ḏeh ‘ă·lê p̄ə·šā·‘ay Yah·weh wə·’at·tāh nā·śā·ṯā ‘ă·wōn ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯî se·lāh — WLC · 5

Therefore… let all the godly pray to You while You may be found. Surely when great… waters rise, they will not come near.

עַל־ זֹ֡את כָּל־ חָסִ֨יד׀ יִתְפַּלֵּ֬ל אֵלֶיךָ֮ לְעֵ֪ת מְ֫צֹ֥א רַ֗ק רַבִּ֑ים אֵ֝לָ֗יו לְ֭שֵׁטֶף מַ֣יִם לֹ֣א יַגִּֽיעוּ׃ ‘al- zōṯ kāl- ḥā·sîḏ yiṯ·pal·lêl ’ê·le·ḵā lə·‘êṯ mə·ṣō raq rab·bîm ’ê·lāw lə·šê·ṭep̄ ma·yim lō yag·gî·‘ū — WLC · 6

You are my hiding place You protect me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah

אַתָּ֤ה׀ סֵ֥תֶר לִי֮ תִּ֫צְּרֵ֥נִי מִצַּ֪ר תְּס֖וֹבְבֵ֣נִי רָנֵּ֥י פַלֵּ֑ט סֶֽלָה׃ ’at·tāh sê·ṯer lî tiṣ·ṣə·rê·nî miṣ·ṣar tə·sō·wḇ·ḇê·nî rān·nê p̄al·lêṭ se·lāh — WLC · 7

I will instruct you and teach you the way… you should go; I will give you counsel [and] watch over you.

אַשְׂכִּֽילְךָ֨׀ וְֽאוֹרְךָ֗ בְּדֶֽרֶךְ־ ז֥וּ תֵלֵ֑ךְ אִֽיעֲצָ֖ה עֵינִֽי׃ עָלֶ֣יךָ ’aś·kî·lə·ḵā wə·’ō·wr·ḵā bə·ḏe·reḵ- zū ṯê·lêḵ ’î·‘ă·ṣāh ‘ê·nî ‘ā·le·ḵā — WLC · 8

Do not be like the horse or mule, [which] have no understanding; they must be controlled with bit and bridle… [to make] them come to you.

אַל־ תִּֽהְי֤וּ׀ כְּס֥וּס כְּפֶרֶד֮ אֵ֤ין הָ֫בִ֥ין לִבְל֑וֹם בְּמֶֽתֶג־ וָרֶ֣סֶן עֶדְי֣וֹ בַּ֝֗ל קְרֹ֣ב אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ ’al- tih·yū kə·sūs kə·p̄e·reḏ ’ên hā·ḇîn liḇ·lō·wm bə·me·ṯeḡ- wā·re·sen ‘eḏ·yōw bal qə·rōḇ ’ê·le·ḵā — WLC · 9

Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but loving devotion surrounds him who trusts in the LORD.

רַבִּ֥ים מַכְאוֹבִ֗ים לָרָ֫שָׁ֥ע חֶ֝֗סֶד יְסוֹבְבֶֽנּוּ׃ וְהַבּוֹטֵ֥חַ בַּיהוָ֑ה rab·bîm maḵ·’ō·w·ḇîm lā·rā·šā‘ ḥe·seḏ yə·sō·wḇ·ḇen·nū wə·hab·bō·w·ṭê·aḥ Yah·weh — WLC · 10

Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous ones; shout for joy, all you upright in heart.

שִׂמְח֬וּ בַֽיהוָ֣ה וְ֭גִילוּ צַדִּיקִ֑ים וְ֝הַרְנִ֗ינוּ כָּל־ יִשְׁרֵי־ לֵֽב׃ śim·ḥū Yah·weh wə·ḡî·lū ṣad·dî·qîm wə·har·nî·nū kāl- yiš·rê- lêḇ — WLC · 11
