Chapter 52
Why Do You Boast of Evil?

For the choirmaster. A Maskil of David. After Doeg the Edomite went to Saul and told him, “David has gone to the house of Ahimelech.” 1Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man? The loving devotion of God [endures] all day long.

לַמְנַצֵּ֗חַ מַשְׂכִּ֥יל לְדָוִֽד׃ דּוֹאֵ֣ג הָאֲדֹמִי֮ בְּב֤וֹא׀ לְשָׁ֫א֥וּל וַיַּגֵּ֪ד וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֑וֹ דָ֝וִ֗ד בָּ֥א אֶל־ בֵּ֥ית אֲחִימֶֽלֶךְ׃ מַה־ תִּתְהַלֵּ֣ל בְּ֭רָעָה הַגִּבּ֑וֹר חֶ֥סֶד אֵ֝֗ל כָּל־ הַיּֽוֹם׃ lam·naṣ·ṣê·aḥ maś·kîl lə·ḏā·wiḏ dō·w·’êḡ hā·’ă·ḏō·mî bə·ḇō·w lə·šā·’ūl way·yag·gêḏ way·yō·mer lōw ḏā·wiḏ bā ’el- bêṯ ’ă·ḥî·me·leḵ mah- tiṯ·hal·lêl bə·rā·‘āh hag·gib·bō·wr ḥe·seḏ ’êl kāl- hay·yō·wm — WLC · 1

Your tongue devises destruction like a sharpened razor, O worker of deceit.

You love evil more than good, falsehood more than speaking truth. Selah

You love every word that devours, O deceitful tongue.
𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤋𐤏 𐤌𐤓𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍
אָהַ֥בְתָּ כָֽל־ דִּבְרֵי־ בָ֗לַע מִרְמָֽה׃ לְשׁ֣וֹן ’ā·haḇ·tā ḵāl diḇ·rê- ḇā·la‘ mir·māh lə·šō·wn — WLC · 4

Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin; He will snatch you up and tear you away from [your] tent; He will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah

גַּם־ אֵל֮ יִתָּצְךָ֪ לָ֫נֶ֥צַח יַחְתְּךָ֣ וְיִסָּחֲךָ֣ מֵאֹ֑הֶל וְשֵֽׁרֶשְׁךָ֨ מֵאֶ֖רֶץ חַיִּ֣ים סֶֽלָה׃ gam- ’êl yit·tā·ṣə·ḵā lā·ne·ṣaḥ yaḥ·tə·ḵā wə·yis·sā·ḥă·ḵā mê·’ō·hel wə·šê·reš·ḵā mê·’e·reṣ ḥay·yîm se·lāh — WLC · 5

The righteous will see and fear; vvv they will mock [the evildoer], saying,
𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤇𐤒𐤅
צַדִּיקִ֥ים וְיִרְא֖וּ וְיִירָ֗אוּ וְעָלָ֥יו יִשְׂחָֽקוּ׃ ṣad·dî·qîm wə·yir·’ū wə·yî·rā·’ū wə·‘ā·lāw yiś·ḥā·qū — WLC · 6

“Look at the man who did not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his wealth [and] strengthened himself by destruction.”

הִנֵּ֤ה הַגֶּ֗בֶר לֹ֤א יָשִׂ֥ים אֱלֹהִ֗ים מָֽע֫וּזּ֥וֹ וַ֭יִּבְטַח בְּרֹ֣ב עָשְׁר֑וֹ יָ֝עֹ֗ז בְּהַוָּתֽוֹ׃ hin·nêh hag·ge·ḇer lō yā·śîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm mā·‘ūz·zōw way·yiḇ·ṭaḥ bə·rōḇ ‘ā·šə·rōw yā·‘ōz bə·haw·wā·ṯōw — WLC · 7

But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in the loving devotion of God forever and ever.

וַאֲנִ֤י׀ כְּזַ֣יִת רַ֭עֲנָן בְּבֵ֣ית אֱלֹהִ֑ים בָּטַ֥חְתִּי בְחֶֽסֶד־ אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים עוֹלָ֥ם וָעֶֽד׃ wa·’ă·nî kə·za·yiṯ ra·‘ă·nān bə·ḇêṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîm bā·ṭaḥ·tî ḇə·ḥe·seḏ- ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘ō·w·lām wā·‘eḏ — WLC · 8

I will praise You forever, because You have done it. I will wait on Your name— for it is good— in the presence of Your saints.
