Chapter 53
The Fool Says There Is No God

For the choirmaster. According to Mahalath. A Maskil of David. 1The fool says in his heart, “[There is] no God.” They are corrupt; their ways are vile. There is no one who does good.

לַמְנַצֵּ֥חַ עַֽל־ מָחֲלַ֗ת מַשְׂכִּ֥יל לְדָוִֽד׃ נָבָ֣ל אָ֘מַ֤ר בְּ֭לִבּוֹ אֵ֣ין אֱלֹהִ֑ים הִֽ֝שְׁחִ֗יתוּ וְהִֽתְעִ֥יבוּ עָ֝֗וֶל אֵ֣ין עֹֽשֵׂה־ טֽוֹב׃ lam·naṣ·ṣê·aḥ ‘al- mā·ḥă·laṯ maś·kîl lə·ḏā·wiḏ nā·ḇāl ’ā·mar bə·lib·bōw ’ên ’ĕ·lō·hîm hiš·ḥî·ṯū wə·hiṯ·‘î·ḇū ‘ā·wel ’ên ‘ō·śêh- ṭō·wḇ — WLC · 1

God looks down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if any understand, if any seek God.

אֱֽלֹהִ֗ים הִשְׁקִ֪יף מִשָּׁמַיִם֮ עַֽל־ בְּנֵ֫י אָדָ֥ם לִ֭רְאוֹת הֲיֵ֣שׁ מַשְׂכִּ֑יל דֹּ֝רֵ֗שׁ אֶת־ אֱלֹהִֽים׃ ’ĕlō·hîm hiš·qîp̄ miš·šā·ma·yim ‘al- bə·nê ’ā·ḏām lir·’ō·wṯ hă·yêš maś·kîl dō·rêš ’eṯ- ’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 2

All have turned away, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.

כֻּלּ֥וֹ סָג֮ יַחְדָּ֪ו נֶ֫אֱלָ֥חוּ אֵ֤ין עֹֽשֵׂה־ ט֑וֹב אֵ֝֗ין גַּם־ אֶחָֽד׃ kul·lōw sāḡ yaḥ·dāw ne·’ĕ·lā·ḥū ’ên ‘ō·śêh- ṭō·wḇ ’ên gam- ’e·ḥāḏ — WLC · 3

Will the workers of iniquity never learn? They devour my people [like] bread; they refuse to call upon God.

פֹּ֤עֲלֵ֫י אָ֥וֶן הֲלֹ֥א יָדְעוּ֮ אֹכְלֵ֣י עַ֭מִּי אָ֣כְלוּ לֶ֑חֶם לֹ֣א קָרָֽאוּ׃ אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים pō·‘ă·lê ’ā·wen hă·lō yā·ḏə·‘ū ’ō·ḵə·lê ‘am·mî ’ā·ḵə·lū le·ḥem lō qā·rā·’ū ’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 4

There they are, overwhelmed with dread, [where] there was nothing to fear. For God has scattered the bones of those who besieged you. You put them to shame, for God has despised them.

שָׁ֤ם׀ פָּֽחֲדוּ־ פַחַד֮ הָ֪יָה֫ לֹא־ פָ֥חַד כִּֽי־ אֱלֹהִ֗ים פִּ֭זַּר עַצְמ֣וֹת חֹנָ֑ךְ הֱ֝בִשֹׁ֗תָה כִּֽי־ אֱלֹהִ֥ים מְאָסָֽם׃ šām pā·ḥă·ḏū- p̄a·ḥaḏ hā·yāh lō- p̄ā·ḥaḏ kî- ’ĕ·lō·hîm piz·zar ‘aṣ·mō·wṯ ḥō·nāḵ hĕ·ḇi·šō·ṯāh kî- ’ĕ·lō·hîm mə·’ā·sām — WLC · 5

Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion! When God restores His captive people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad!
