Do Not Rebuke Me in Your Anger

For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments, according to Sheminith. A Psalm of David. 1O LORD, do not rebuke me in Your anger or discipline me in Your wrath.

לַמְנַצֵּ֣חַ בִּ֭נְגִינוֹת עַֽל־ הַשְּׁמִינִ֗ית מִזְמ֥וֹר לְדָוִֽד׃ יְֽהוָ֗ה אַל־ תוֹכִיחֵ֑נִי בְּאַפְּךָ֥ וְֽאַל־ תְיַסְּרֵֽנִי׃ בַּחֲמָתְךָ֥ lam·naṣ·ṣê·aḥ bin·ḡî·nō·wṯ ‘al- haš·šə·mî·nîṯ miz·mō·wr lə·ḏā·wiḏ Yah·weh ’al- ṯō·w·ḵî·ḥê·nî bə·’ap·pə·ḵā wə·’al- ṯə·yas·sə·rê·nî ba·ḥă·mā·ṯə·ḵā — WLC · 1

Be merciful to me, O LORD, for I am frail; heal me, O LORD, for my bones are in agony.

My soul is deeply distressed… How long, O LORD, how long?

וְ֭נַפְשִׁי נִבְהֲלָ֣ה מְאֹ֑ד עַד־ וְאַתְּ יְ֝הוָ֗ה מָתָֽי׃ wə·nap̄·šî niḇ·hă·lāh mə·’ōḏ ‘aḏ- wə·ʾat Yah·weh mā·ṯāy — WLC · 3

Turn, O LORD, [and] deliver my soul; save me because of Your loving devotion.

שׁוּבָ֣ה יְ֭הוָה חַלְּצָ֣ה נַפְשִׁ֑י ה֝וֹשִׁיעֵ֗נִי לְמַ֣עַן חַסְדֶּֽךָ׃ šū·ḇāh Yah·weh ḥal·lə·ṣāh nap̄·šî hō·wō·šî·‘ê·nî lə·ma·‘an ḥas·de·ḵā — WLC · 4

For there is no mention of You in death; who can praise You from Sheol?

כִּ֤י אֵ֣ין זִכְרֶ֑ךָ בַּמָּ֣וֶת מִ֣י יֽוֹדֶה־ לָּֽךְ׃ בִּ֝שְׁא֗וֹל kî ’ên ziḵ·re·ḵā bam·mā·weṯ mî yō·w·ḏeh- lāḵ biš·’ō·wl — WLC · 5

I am weary from groaning; all night I flood my bed with {weeping} [and] drench my couch with tears.

יָגַ֤עְתִּי׀ בְּֽאַנְחָתִ֗י בְכָל־ לַ֭יְלָה אַשְׂחֶ֣ה מִטָּתִ֑י אַמְסֶֽה׃ עַרְשִׂ֥י בְּ֝דִמְעָתִ֗י yā·ḡa‘·tî bə·’an·ḥā·ṯî ḇə·ḵāl- lay·lāh ’aś·ḥeh miṭ·ṭā·ṯî ’am·seh ‘ar·śî bə·ḏim·‘ā·ṯî — WLC · 6

My eyes fail from grief; they grow dim because of all my foes.

עֵינִ֑י עָֽשְׁשָׁ֣ה מִכַּ֣עַס עָֽ֝תְקָ֗ה בְּכָל־ צוֹרְרָֽי׃ ‘ê·nî ‘ā·šə·šāh mik·ka·‘as ‘ā·ṯə·qāh bə·ḵāl ṣō·wr·rāy — WLC · 7

Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity, for the LORD has heard vvv my weeping.

ס֣וּרוּ מִ֭מֶּנִּי כָּל־ פֹּ֣עֲלֵי אָ֑וֶן כִּֽי־ יְ֝הוָ֗ה שָׁמַ֥ע ק֣וֹל בִּכְיִֽי׃ sū·rū mim·men·nî kāl- pō·‘ă·lê ’ā·wen kî- Yah·weh šā·ma‘ qō·wl biḵ·yî — WLC · 8

The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer.

יְ֭הוָה שָׁמַ֣ע תְּחִנָּתִ֑י יְ֝הוָ֗ה יִקָּֽח׃ תְּֽפִלָּתִ֥י Yah·weh šā·ma‘ tə·ḥin·nā·ṯî Yah·weh yiq·qāḥ tə·p̄il·lā·ṯî — WLC · 9

All my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed…; they will turn back in sudden disgrace.
