God’s Enemies Are Scattered

For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. A song. 1God arises. His enemies are scattered, and those who hate Him flee His presence.

לַמְנַצֵּ֥חַ מִזְמ֥וֹר לְדָוִ֗ד שִֽׁיר׃ אֱ֭לֹהִים יָק֣וּם אוֹיְבָ֑יו יָפ֣וּצוּ מְ֝שַׂנְאָ֗יו וְיָנ֥וּסוּ מִפָּנָֽיו׃ lam·naṣ·ṣê·aḥ miz·mō·wr lə·ḏā·wiḏ šîr ’ĕ·lō·hîm yā·qūm ’ō·wy·ḇāw yā·p̄ū·ṣū mə·śan·’āw wə·yā·nū·sū mip·pā·nāw — WLC · 1

As smoke is blown away, You will drive [them] out; as wax melts before the fire, the wicked will perish in the presence of God.

עָשָׁ֗ן כְּהִנְדֹּ֥ף תִּ֫נְדֹּ֥ף דּ֭וֹנַג כְּהִמֵּ֣ס מִפְּנֵי־ אֵ֑שׁ רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים יֹאבְד֥וּ מִפְּנֵ֥י אֱלֹהִֽים׃ ‘ā·šān kə·hin·dōp̄ tin·dōp̄ dō·w·naḡ kə·him·mês mip·pə·nê- ’êš rə·šā·‘îm yō·ḇə·ḏū mip·pə·nê ’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 2

But the righteous will be glad [and] rejoice before God; they will celebrate with joy.

וְֽצַדִּיקִ֗ים יִשְׂמְח֣וּ יַֽ֭עַלְצוּ לִפְנֵ֥י אֱלֹהִ֗ים וְיָשִׂ֥ישׂוּ בְשִׂמְחָֽה׃ wə·ṣad·dî·qîm yiś·mə·ḥū ya·‘al·ṣū lip̄·nê ’ĕ·lō·hîm wə·yā·śî·śū ḇə·śim·ḥāh — WLC · 3

Sing to God! Sing praises to His name. Exalt Him who rides on the clouds His name is the LORD— and rejoice before Him.

שִׁ֤ירוּ׀ לֵֽאלֹהִים֮ זַמְּר֪וּ שְׁ֫מ֥וֹ סֹ֡לּוּ לָרֹכֵ֣ב בָּ֭עֲרָבוֹת שְׁמ֗וֹ בְּיָ֥הּ וְעִלְז֥וּ לְפָנָֽיו׃ šî·rū lê·lō·hîm zam·mə·rū šə·mōw sōl·lū lā·rō·ḵêḇ bā·‘ă·rā·ḇō·wṯ šə·mōw bə·yāh wə·‘il·zū lə·p̄ā·nāw — WLC · 4

A father of the fatherless and a defender of widows [is] God in His holy habitation.

אֲבִ֣י יְ֭תוֹמִים וְדַיַּ֣ן אַלְמָנ֑וֹת אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים קָדְשֽׁוֹ׃ בִּמְע֥וֹן ’ă·ḇî yə·ṯō·w·mîm wə·ḏay·yan ’al·mā·nō·wṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîm qā·ḏə·šōw bim·‘ō·wn — WLC · 5

God settles the lonely in families; He leads the prisoners {out} to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched [land].

O God, when You went out before Your people, when You marched through the wasteland, Selah

אֱֽלֹהִ֗ים בְּ֭צֵאתְךָ לִפְנֵ֣י עַמֶּ֑ךָ בְּצַעְדְּךָ֖ בִֽישִׁימ֣וֹן סֶֽלָה׃ ’ĕlō·hîm bə·ṣê·ṯə·ḵā lip̄·nê ‘am·me·ḵā bə·ṣa‘·də·ḵā ḇî·šî·mō·wn se·lāh — WLC · 7

the earth shook and the heavens poured down [rain] before God, the One [on] Sinai, before God, the God of Israel.

אֶ֤רֶץ רָעָ֨שָׁה׀ אַף־ שָׁמַ֣יִם נָטְפוּ֮ מִפְּנֵ֪י אֱלֹ֫הִ֥ים זֶ֥ה סִינַ֑י מִפְּנֵ֥י אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ’e·reṣ rā·‘ā·šāh ’ap̄- šā·ma·yim nā·ṭə·p̄ū mip·pə·nê ’ĕ·lō·hîm zeh sî·nay mip·pə·nê ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 8

You sent abundant rain, O God; You refreshed Your weary inheritance.

תָּנִ֣יף נְ֭דָבוֹת גֶּ֣שֶׁם אֱלֹהִ֑ים אַתָּ֥ה כֽוֹנַנְתָּֽהּ׃ וְ֝נִלְאָ֗ה נַחֲלָתְךָ֥ tā·nîp̄ nə·ḏā·ḇō·wṯ ge·šem ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’at·tāh ḵō·w·nan·tāh wə·nil·’āh na·ḥă·lā·ṯə·ḵā — WLC · 9

Your flock settled therein; O God, from Your bounty You provided for the poor.

חַיָּתְךָ֥ יָֽשְׁבוּ־ בָ֑הּ אֱלֹהִֽים׃ בְּטוֹבָתְךָ֖ תָּ֤כִ֥ין לֶעָנִ֣י ḥay·yā·ṯə·ḵā yā·šə·ḇū- ḇāh ’ĕ·lō·hîm bə·ṭō·w·ḇā·ṯə·ḵā tā·ḵîn le·‘ā·nî — WLC · 10

The Lord gives the command; a great company of women proclaim [it]:
𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤓𐤁 𐤑𐤁𐤀 𐤄𐤌𐤁𐤔𐤓𐤅𐤕
אֲדֹנָ֥י יִתֶּן־ אֹ֑מֶר רָֽב׃ צָבָ֥א הַֽ֝מְבַשְּׂר֗וֹת ’ă·ḏō·nāy yit·ten- ’ō·mer rāḇ ṣā·ḇā ham·ḇaś·śə·rō·wṯ — WLC · 11

“Kings [and their] armies flee in haste…; she who waits at home divides the plunder.
𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤃𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤕𐤇𐤋𐤒 𐤔𐤋𐤋
מַלְכֵ֣י צְ֭בָאוֹת יִדֹּד֣וּן יִדֹּד֑וּן וּנְוַת בַּ֝֗יִת תְּחַלֵּ֥ק שָׁלָֽל׃ mal·ḵê ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ yid·dō·ḏūn yid·dō·ḏūn ū·nə·waṯ ba·yiṯ tə·ḥal·lêq šā·lāl — WLC · 12

Though you lie down among the sheepfolds, the wings of the dove are covered with silver, and her feathers with shimmering gold.”

אִֽם־ תִּשְׁכְּבוּן֮ בֵּ֪ין שְׁפַ֫תָּ֥יִם כַּנְפֵ֣י י֭וֹנָה נֶחְפָּ֣ה בַכֶּ֑סֶף בִּֽירַקְרַ֥ק וְ֝אֶבְרוֹתֶ֗יהָ חָרֽוּץ׃ ’im- tiš·kə·ḇūn bên šə·p̄at·tā·yim kan·p̄ê yō·w·nāh neḥ·pāh ḇak·ke·sep̄ bî·raq·raq wə·’eḇ·rō·w·ṯe·hā ḥā·rūṣ — WLC · 13

When the Almighty scattered the kings in [the land], it was like the snow falling on Zalmon.

שַׁדַּ֓י בְּפָ֘רֵ֤שׂ מְלָ֘כִ֤ים בָּ֗הּ תַּשְׁלֵ֥ג בְּצַלְמֽוֹן׃ šad·day bə·p̄ā·rêś mə·lā·ḵîm bāh taš·lêḡ bə·ṣal·mō·wn — WLC · 14

A mountain of God [is] Mount Bashan; a mountain [of] [many] peaks [is] Mount Bashan.
𐤄𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤓 𐤁𐤔𐤍 𐤄𐤓 𐤂𐤁𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤓 𐤁𐤔𐤍
הַר־ אֱ֭לֹהִים הַר־ בָּשָׁ֑ן הַ֥ר גַּ֝בְנֻנִּ֗ים הַר־ בָּשָֽׁן׃ har- ’ĕ·lō·hîm har- bā·šān har gaḇ·nun·nîm har- bā·šān — WLC · 15

Why do you gaze in envy, O mountains of many peaks? [This is] the mountain God chose for [His] dwelling, where the LORD will surely dwell forever.
𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤓𐤑𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤁𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤄𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤐 𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤋𐤍𐤑𐤇
לָ֤מָּה׀ תְּֽרַצְּדוּן֮ הָרִ֪ים גַּבְנֻ֫נִּ֥ים הָהָ֗ר אֱלֹהִ֣ים חָמַ֣ד לְשִׁבְתּ֑וֹ יְ֝הוָ֗ה אַף־ יִשְׁכֹּ֥ן לָנֶֽצַח׃ lām·māh tə·raṣ·ṣə·ḏūn hā·rîm gaḇ·nun·nîm hā·hār ’ĕ·lō·hîm ḥā·maḏ lə·šiḇ·tōw Yah·weh ’ap̄- yiš·kōn lā·ne·ṣaḥ — WLC · 16

The chariots of God [are] tens of thousands— thousands of thousands [are they]; the Lord [is] in His sanctuary [as He was at] Sinai.

רֶ֤כֶב אֱלֹהִ֗ים רִבֹּתַ֣יִם אַלְפֵ֣י שִׁנְאָ֑ן אֲדֹנָ֥י בָ֝֗ם בַּקֹּֽדֶשׁ׃ סִינַ֥י re·ḵeḇ ’ĕ·lō·hîm rib·bō·ṯa·yim ’al·p̄ê šin·’ān ’ă·ḏō·nāy ḇām baq·qō·ḏeš sî·nay — WLC · 17

You have ascended on high; You have led captives away… You have received gifts from men, even [from] the rebellious, that the LORD God may dwell [there].
𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤕𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤐 𐤎𐤅𐤓𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤊𐤍
עָ֘לִ֤יתָ לַמָּר֨וֹם׀ שֶּׁ֗בִי שָׁ֘בִ֤יתָ לָקַ֣חְתָּ מַ֭תָּנוֹת בָּאָדָ֑ם וְאַ֥ף ס֝וֹרְרִ֗ים יָ֬הּ אֱלֹהִֽים׃ לִשְׁכֹּ֤ן׀ ‘ā·lî·ṯā lam·mā·rō·wm še·ḇî šā·ḇî·ṯā lā·qaḥ·tā mat·tā·nō·wṯ bā·’ā·ḏām wə·’ap̄ sō·wr·rîm yāh ’ĕ·lō·hîm liš·kōn — WLC · 18

Blessed [be] the Lord, [who] daily… bears our burden, the God of our salvation. Selah

בָּ֤ר֣וּךְ אֲדֹנָי֮ י֤וֹם׀ י֥וֹם יַֽעֲמָס־ לָ֗נוּ הָ֘אֵ֤ל יְֽשׁוּעָתֵ֬נוּ סֶֽלָה׃ bā·rūḵ ’ă·ḏō·nāy yō·wm yō·wm ya·‘ă·mās- lā·nū hā·’êl yə·šū·‘ā·ṯê·nū se·lāh — WLC · 19

Our God… [is] a God of deliverance; the Lord GOD [is our] rescuer from death.
𐤄𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤔𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤕𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕
הָ֤אֵ֣ל׀ לָנוּ֮ אֵ֤ל לְֽמוֹשָׁ֫ע֥וֹת אֲדֹנָ֑י וְלֵיהוִ֥ה תּוֹצָאֽוֹת׃ לַ֝מָּ֗וֶת hā·’êl lā·nū ’êl lə·mō·wō·šā·‘ō·wṯ ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh tō·w·ṣā·’ō·wṯ lam·mā·weṯ — WLC · 20

Surely God will crush the heads of His enemies, the hairy crowns of those who persist in guilty ways.
𐤀𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤇𐤑 𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤀𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤒𐤃𐤒𐤃 𐤌𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤅
אַךְ־ אֱלֹהִ֗ים יִמְחַץ֮ רֹ֤אשׁ אֹ֫יְבָ֥יו שֵׂעָ֑ר קָדְקֹ֥ד מִ֝תְהַלֵּ֗ךְ בַּאֲשָׁמָֽיו׃ ’aḵ- ’ĕ·lō·hîm yim·ḥaṣ rōš ’ō·yə·ḇāw śê·‘ār qā·ḏə·qōḏ miṯ·hal·lêḵ ba·’ă·šā·māw — WLC · 21

The Lord said, “I will retrieve [them] from Bashan, I will bring [them] up from the depths of the sea,
𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤌𐤁𐤔𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤌
אֲ֭דֹנָי אָמַ֣ר אָשִׁ֑יב מִבָּשָׁ֣ן אָ֝שִׁ֗יב מִֽמְּצֻל֥וֹת יָֽם׃ ’ă·ḏō·nāy ’ā·mar ’ā·šîḇ mib·bā·šān ’ā·šîḇ mim·mə·ṣu·lō·wṯ yām — WLC · 22

that your foot may be dipped in the blood of [your] foes— the tongues of your dogs in [the same].”

לְמַ֤עַן׀ רַגְלְךָ֗ תִּֽמְחַ֥ץ בְּ֫דָ֥ם מֵאֹיְבִ֥ים לְשׁ֥וֹן כְּלָבֶ֑יךָ מִנֵּֽהוּ׃ lə·ma·‘an raḡ·lə·ḵā tim·ḥaṣ bə·ḏām mê·’ō·yə·ḇîm lə·šō·wn kə·lā·ḇe·ḵā min·nê·hū — WLC · 23

They have seen Your procession, O God— the march of my God [and] King into the sanctuary.

רָא֣וּ הֲלִיכוֹתֶ֣יךָ אֱלֹהִ֑ים הֲלִ֘יכ֤וֹת אֵלִ֖י מַלְכִּ֣י בַקֹּֽדֶשׁ׃ rā·’ū hă·lî·ḵō·w·ṯe·ḵā ’ĕ·lō·hîm hă·lî·ḵō·wṯ ’ê·lî mal·kî ḇaq·qō·ḏeš — WLC · 24

The singers lead the way, the musicians [follow] after, among the maidens playing tambourines.

שָׁ֭רִים קִדְּמ֣וּ נֹגְנִ֑ים אַחַ֣ר בְּת֥וֹךְ עֲ֝לָמ֗וֹת תּוֹפֵפֽוֹת׃ šā·rîm qid·də·mū nō·ḡə·nîm ’a·ḥar bə·ṯō·wḵ ‘ă·lā·mō·wṯ tō·w·p̄ê·p̄ō·wṯ — WLC · 25

Rebuke the beast in the reeds, the herd of bulls among the calves of the nations, [until] it submits, [bringing] bars of silver. Scatter the nations [who] delight in war.

Ascribe the power to God, whose majesty [is] over Israel, whose strength [is] in the skies.

O God, [You are] awesome in Your sanctuary; the God of Israel Himself gives strength and power to [His] people. Blessed [be] God!
