Chapter 7

I Take Refuge in You

1

A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning the words of Cush, vvv a Benjamite. 1O LORD my God, I take refuge in You; save me and deliver me from all my pursuers,

𐤔𐤂𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤊𐤅𐤔 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤇𐤎𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤊 𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤉𐤋𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤃𐤐𐤉

שִׁגָּי֗וֹן לְדָ֫וִ֥ד אֲשֶׁר־ שָׁ֥ר לַיהוָ֑ה עַל־ דִּבְרֵי־ כ֝֗וּשׁ בֶּן־ יְמִינִֽי׃ יְהוָ֣ה אֱ֭לֹהַי חָסִ֑יתִי בְּךָ֣ הוֹשִׁיעֵ֥נִי וְהַצִּילֵֽנִי׃ מִכָּל־ רֹ֝דְפַ֗י šig·gā·yō·wn lə·ḏā·wiḏ ’ă·šer- šār Yah·weh ‘al- diḇ·rê- ḵūš ben- yə·mî·nî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hay ḥā·sî·ṯî bə·ḵā hō·wō·šî·‘ê·nî wə·haṣ·ṣî·lê·nî mik·kāl rō·ḏə·p̄ayWLC · 1

or they will shred my soul like a lion and tear me to pieces with no one to rescue me.

𐤐𐤍 𐤉𐤈𐤓𐤐 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤐𐤓𐤒 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤑𐤉𐤋

פֶּן־ יִטְרֹ֣ף נַפְשִׁ֑י כְּאַרְיֵ֣ה פֹּ֝רֵ֗ק וְאֵ֣ין מַצִּֽיל׃ pen- yiṭ·rōp̄ nap̄·šî kə·’ar·yêh pō·rêq wə·’ên maṣ·ṣîlWLC · 2

O LORD my God, if I have done this, if injustice is on my hands,

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤊𐤐𐤉

יְהוָ֣ה אֱ֭לֹהַי אִם־ עָשִׂ֣יתִי זֹ֑את אִֽם־ עָ֥וֶל יֶשׁ־ בְּכַפָּֽי׃ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hay ’im- ‘ā·śî·ṯî zōṯ ’im- ‘ā·wel yeš- bə·ḵap·pāyWLC · 3

if I have rewarded my ally with evil, if I have plundered my foe without cause,

𐤀𐤌 𐤂𐤌𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤉 𐤓𐤏 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤋𐤑𐤄 𐤑𐤅𐤓𐤓𐤉 𐤓𐤉𐤒𐤌

אִם־ גָּ֭מַלְתִּי שֽׁוֹלְמִ֥י רָ֑ע וָאֲחַלְּצָ֖ה צוֹרְרִ֣י רֵיקָֽם׃ ’im- gā·mal·tî šō·wl·mî rā‘ wā·’ă·ḥal·lə·ṣāh ṣō·wr·rî rê·qāmWLC · 4

then may my enemy pursue me and overtake me; may he trample me to the ground and leave my honor in the dust. Selah

𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁 𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤐 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤂 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤎 𐤇𐤉𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤎𐤋𐤄

אוֹיֵ֨ב׀ יִֽרַדֹּ֥ף וְיַשֵּׂ֗ג נַפְשִׁ֡י וְיִרְמֹ֣ס חַיָּ֑י לָאָ֣רֶץ יַשְׁכֵּ֣ן וּכְבוֹדִ֓י׀ לֶעָפָ֖ר סֶֽלָה׃ ’ō·w·yêḇ yi·rad·dōp̄ wə·yaś·śêḡ nap̄·šî wə·yir·mōs ḥay·yāy lā·’ā·reṣ yaš·kên ū·ḵə·ḇō·w·ḏî le·‘ā·p̄ār se·lāhWLC · 5

Arise, O LORD, in Your anger; rise up against the fury of my enemies. Awake, my God, and ordain judgment.

𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤐𐤊 𐤄𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤑𐤅𐤓𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈

ק֘וּמָ֤ה יְהוָ֨ה׀ בְּאַפֶּ֗ךָ הִ֭נָּשֵׂא בְּעַבְר֣וֹת צוֹרְרָ֑י וְע֥וּרָה אֵ֝לַ֗י צִוִּֽיתָ׃ מִשְׁפָּ֥ט qū·māh Yah·weh bə·’ap·pe·ḵā hin·nā·śê bə·‘aḇ·rō·wṯ ṣō·wr·rāy wə·‘ū·rāh ’ê·lay ṣiw·wî·ṯā miš·pāṭWLC · 6

Let the assembled peoples gather around You; take Your seat over them on high.

𐤅𐤏𐤃𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤎𐤅𐤁𐤁𐤊 𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤌

וַעֲדַ֣ת לְ֭אֻמִּים תְּסוֹבְבֶ֑ךָּ שֽׁוּבָה׃ וְ֝עָלֶ֗יהָ לַמָּר֥וֹם wa·‘ă·ḏaṯ lə·’um·mîm tə·sō·wḇ·ḇe·kā šū·ḇāh wə·‘ā·le·hā lam·mā·rō·wmWLC · 7

The LORD judges the peoples; vindicate me, O LORD, according to my righteousness and integrity…

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤉 𐤅𐤊𐤕𐤌𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉

יְהוָה֮ יָדִ֪ין עַ֫מִּ֥ים שָׁפְטֵ֥נִי יְהוָ֑ה כְּצִדְקִ֖י וּכְתֻמִּ֣י עָלָֽי׃ Yah·weh yā·ḏîn ‘am·mîm šā·p̄ə·ṭê·nî Yah·weh kə·ṣiḏ·qî ū·ḵə·ṯum·mî ‘ā·lāyWLC · 8

Put an end to the evil of the wicked, but establish the righteous, O righteous God who searches hearts and minds.

𐤉𐤂𐤌𐤓 𐤓𐤏 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤅𐤍𐤍 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤍𐤀 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤇𐤍 𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤕

יִגְמָר־ רַ֨ע׀ רְשָׁעִים֮ וּתְכוֹנֵ֪ן צַ֫דִּ֥יק נָ֬א צַדִּֽיק׃ אֱלֹהִ֥ים וּבֹחֵ֣ן לִ֭בּ֗וֹת וּכְלָי֗וֹת yiḡ·mār- ra‘ rə·šā·‘îm ū·ṯə·ḵō·w·nên ṣad·dîq nā ṣad·dîq ’ĕ·lō·hîm ū·ḇō·ḥên lib·bō·wṯ ū·ḵə·lā·yō·wṯWLC · 9

My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart.

𐤌𐤂𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤁

מָֽגִנִּ֥י עַל־ אֱלֹהִ֑ים מ֝וֹשִׁ֗יעַ יִשְׁרֵי־ לֵֽב׃ mā·ḡin·nî ‘al- ’ĕ·lō·hîm mō·wō·šî·a‘ yiš·rê- lêḇWLC · 10

God is a righteous judge and a God who feels indignation each day.

𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤈 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤆𐤏𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤅𐤌

אֱ֭לֹהִים צַדִּ֑יק שׁוֹפֵ֣ט וְ֝אֵ֗ל זֹעֵ֥ם בְּכָל־ יֽוֹם׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ṣad·dîq šō·w·p̄êṭ wə·’êl zō·‘êm bə·ḵāl yō·wmWLC · 11

12

If one does not repent, God will sharpen His sword; He has bent and strung His bow.

𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤉𐤋𐤈𐤅𐤔 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤅𐤍𐤍𐤄 𐤒𐤔𐤕𐤅

אִם־ לֹ֣א יָ֭שׁוּב יִלְט֑וֹשׁ חַרְבּ֣וֹ דָ֝רַ֗ךְ וַֽיְכוֹנְנֶֽהָ׃ קַשְׁתּ֥וֹ ’im- lō yā·šūḇ yil·ṭō·wōš ḥar·bōw ḏā·raḵ way·ḵō·wn·ne·hā qaš·tōwWLC · 12

13

He has prepared His deadly weapons; He ordains His arrows with fire.

𐤅𐤋𐤅 𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤐𐤏𐤋 𐤇𐤑𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤃𐤋𐤒𐤉𐤌

וְ֭לוֹ הֵכִ֣ין מָ֑וֶת כְּלֵי־ יִפְעָֽל׃ חִ֝צָּ֗יו לְֽדֹלְקִ֥ים wə·lōw hê·ḵîn mā·weṯ kə·lê- yip̄·‘āl ḥiṣ·ṣāw lə·ḏō·lə·qîmWLC · 13

14

Behold, [the wicked man] travails with evil; he conceives trouble and births falsehood.

𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤇𐤁𐤋 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤃 𐤔𐤒𐤓

הִנֵּ֥ה יְחַבֶּל־ אָ֑וֶן וְהָרָ֥ה עָ֝מָ֗ל וְיָ֣לַד שָֽׁקֶר׃ hin·nêh yə·ḥab·bel- ’ā·wen wə·hā·rāh ‘ā·māl wə·yā·laḏ šā·qerWLC · 14

15

He has dug a hole and hollowed it out; he has fallen into a pit of his own making.

𐤊𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤐𐤓𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤇𐤕 𐤉𐤐𐤏𐤋

כָּ֭רָֽה בּ֣וֹר וַֽיַּחְפְּרֵ֑הוּ וַ֝יִּפֹּ֗ל בְּשַׁ֣חַת יִפְעָֽל׃ kā·rāh bō·wr way·yaḥ·pə·rê·hū way·yip·pōl bə·ša·ḥaṯ yip̄·‘ālWLC · 15

16

His trouble recoils on himself, and his violence falls on his own head.

𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅 𐤇𐤌𐤎𐤅 𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤒𐤃𐤒𐤃𐤅

עֲמָל֣וֹ יָשׁ֣וּב בְרֹאשׁ֑וֹ חֲמָס֥וֹ יֵרֵֽד׃ וְעַ֥ל קָ֝דְקֳד֗וֹ ‘ă·mā·lōw yā·šūḇ ḇə·rō·šōw ḥă·mā·sōw yê·rêḏ wə·‘al qā·ḏə·qo·ḏōwWLC · 16

17

I will thank the LORD for His righteousness and sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.
