Chapter 71

Be My Rock of Refuge

1

In You, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never… be put to shame.

𐤁𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤇𐤎𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤔𐤄

בְּךָֽ־ יְהוָ֥ה חָסִ֑יתִי אַל־ לְעוֹלָֽם׃ אֵב֥וֹשָׁה bə·ḵā- Yah·weh ḥā·sî·ṯî ’al- lə·‘ō·w·lām ’ê·ḇō·wō·šāhWLC · 1

In Your justice, rescue and deliver me; incline Your ear and save me.

בְּצִדְקָתְךָ֗ תַּצִּילֵ֥נִי וּֽתְפַלְּטֵ֑נִי הַטֵּֽה־ אָ֝זְנְךָ֗ אֵלַ֥י וְהוֹשִׁיעֵֽנִי׃ bə·ṣiḏ·qā·ṯə·ḵā taṣ·ṣî·lê·nî ū·ṯə·p̄al·lə·ṭê·nî haṭ·ṭêh- ’ā·zə·nə·ḵā ’ê·lay wə·hō·wō·šî·‘ê·nîWLC · 2

Be… my rock of refuge, where I can always go. Give the command to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress.

הֱיֵ֤ה לִ֨י׀ לְצ֥וּר מָע֡וֹן תָּמִ֗יד לָב֗וֹא צִוִּ֥יתָ לְהוֹשִׁיעֵ֑נִי כִּֽי־ אָֽתָּה׃ סַלְעִ֖י וּמְצוּדָתִ֣י hĕ·yêh lî lə·ṣūr mā·‘ō·wn tā·mîḏ lā·ḇō·w ṣiw·wî·ṯā lə·hō·wō·šî·‘ê·nî kî- ’āt·tāh sal·‘î ū·mə·ṣū·ḏā·ṯîWLC · 3

Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and ruthless.

פַּ֭לְּטֵנִי אֱ‍ֽלֹהַ֗י מִיַּ֣ד רָשָׁ֑ע מִכַּ֖ף מְעַוֵּ֣ל וְחוֹמֵץ׃ pal·lə·ṭê·nî ’ĕlō·hay mî·yaḏ rā·šā‘ mik·kap̄ mə·‘aw·wêl wə·ḥō·mēṣWLC · 4

For You are my hope, O Lord GOD, my confidence from my youth.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤕𐤒𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤁𐤈𐤇𐤉 𐤌𐤍𐤏𐤅𐤓𐤉

כִּֽי־ אַתָּ֥ה תִקְוָתִ֑י אֲדֹנָ֥י יְ֝הוִ֗ה מִבְטַחִ֥י מִנְּעוּרָֽי׃ kî- ’at·tāh ṯiq·wā·ṯî ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh miḇ·ṭa·ḥî min·nə·‘ū·rāyWLC · 5

I have leaned on You since birth; You pulled me from my mother’s womb. My praise is always for You.

𐤍𐤎𐤌𐤊𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤁𐤈𐤍 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤂𐤅𐤆𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤉 𐤌𐤌𐤏𐤉 𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤁𐤊

נִסְמַ֬כְתִּי עָלֶ֤יךָ׀ מִבֶּ֗טֶן אַתָּ֣ה גוֹזִ֑י אִ֭מִּי מִמְּעֵ֣י תְהִלָּתִ֣י תָמִֽיד׃ בְּךָ֖ nis·maḵ·tî ‘ā·le·ḵā mib·be·ṭen ’at·tāh ḡō·w·zî ’im·mî mim·mə·‘ê ṯə·hil·lā·ṯî ṯā·mîḏ bə·ḵāWLC · 6

I have become a portent to many, but You are my strong refuge.

𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤌𐤅𐤐𐤕 𐤋𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤆 𐤌𐤇𐤎𐤉

הָיִ֣יתִי כְּ֭מוֹפֵת לְרַבִּ֑ים וְ֝אַתָּ֗ה עֹֽז׃ מַֽחֲסִי־ hā·yî·ṯî kə·mō·w·p̄êṯ lə·rab·bîm wə·’at·tāh ‘ōz ma·ḥă·sî-WLC · 7

My mouth is filled [with] Your praise [and with] Your splendor all day long.

𐤐𐤉 𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤕𐤊 𐤕𐤐𐤀𐤓𐤕𐤊 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌

פִ֭י יִמָּ֣לֵא תְּהִלָּתֶ֑ךָ תִּפְאַרְתֶּֽךָ׃ כָּל־ הַ֝יּ֗וֹם p̄î yim·mā·lê tə·hil·lā·ṯe·ḵā tip̄·’ar·te·ḵā kāl- hay·yō·wmWLC · 8

Do not discard me… in my old age; do not forsake me when my strength fails.

אַֽל־ תַּ֭שְׁלִיכֵנִי לְעֵ֣ת זִקְנָ֑ה אַֽל־ תַּעַזְבֵֽנִי׃ כֹּ֝חִ֗י כִּכְל֥וֹת ’al- taš·lî·ḵê·nî lə·‘êṯ ziq·nāh ’al- ta·‘az·ḇê·nî kō·ḥî kiḵ·lō·wṯWLC · 9

For my enemies speak against me, and those who lie in wait for my life conspire…,

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤍𐤅𐤏𐤑𐤅 𐤉𐤇𐤃𐤅

כִּֽי־ אוֹיְבַ֣י אָמְר֣וּ לִ֑י וְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י נַ֝פְשִׁ֗י נוֹעֲצ֥וּ יַחְדָּֽו׃ kî- ’ō·wy·ḇay ’ā·mə·rū lî wə·šō·mə·rê nap̄·šî nō·w·‘ă·ṣū yaḥ·dāwWLC · 10

saying, “God has forsaken him; pursue him and seize him, for there is no one to rescue him.”

𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤅 𐤓𐤃𐤐𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤐𐤔𐤅𐤄𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤑𐤉𐤋

לֵ֭אמֹר אֱלֹהִ֣ים עֲזָב֑וֹ רִֽדְפ֥וּ וְ֝תִפְשׂ֗וּהוּ כִּי־ אֵ֥ין מַצִּֽיל׃ lê·mōr ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘ă·zā·ḇōw riḏ·p̄ū wə·ṯip̄·śū·hū kî- ’ên maṣ·ṣîlWLC · 11

Be not far from me, O God. Hurry, O my God, to help me.

𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤓𐤇𐤒 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤉𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤕𐤉

אַל־ תִּרְחַ֣ק מִמֶּ֑נִּי אֱ֭לֹהִים חִישָׁה׃ אֱ֝לֹהַ֗י לְעֶזְרָ֥תִי ’al- tir·ḥaq mim·men·nî ’ĕ·lō·hîm ḥī·šå̄h ’ĕ·lō·hay lə·‘ez·rā·ṯîWLC · 12

May the accusers of my soul be ashamed [and] consumed; may those who seek my harm be covered with scorn and disgrace.

𐤔𐤈𐤍𐤉 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤉𐤁𐤔𐤅 𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤁𐤒𐤔𐤉 𐤓𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤈𐤅 𐤇𐤓𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤌𐤄

שֹׂטְנֵ֪י נַ֫פְשִׁ֥י יֵבֹ֣שׁוּ יִכְלוּ֮ מְ֝בַקְשֵׁ֗י רָעָתִֽי׃ יַֽעֲט֣וּ חֶ֭רְפָּה וּכְלִמָּ֑ה śō·ṭə·nê nap̄·šî yê·ḇō·šū yiḵ·lū mə·ḇaq·šê rā·‘ā·ṯî ya·‘ă·ṭū ḥer·pāh ū·ḵə·lim·māhWLC · 13

But I will always hope and will praise You more and more.

𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤇𐤋 𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤎𐤐𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋

וַ֭אֲנִי תָּמִ֣יד אֲיַחֵ֑ל תְּהִלָּתֶֽךָ׃ וְ֝הוֹסַפְתִּ֗י עַל־ כָּל־ wa·’ă·nî tā·mîḏ ’ă·ya·ḥêl tə·hil·lā·ṯe·ḵā wə·hō·w·sap̄·tî ‘al- kāl-WLC · 14

My mouth will declare Your righteousness and Your salvation all day long…, though I cannot know their full measure.

𐤐𐤉 𐤉𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤕𐤊 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤊 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤎𐤐𐤓𐤅𐤕

פִּ֤י׀ יְסַפֵּ֬ר צִדְקָתֶ֗ךָ תְּשׁוּעָתֶ֑ךָ כָּל־ הַיּ֥וֹם כִּ֤י לֹ֖א יָדַ֣עְתִּי סְפֹרֽוֹת׃ pî yə·sap·pêr ṣiḏ·qā·ṯe·ḵā tə·šū·‘ā·ṯe·ḵā kāl- hay·yō·wm kî lō yā·ḏa‘·tî sə·p̄ō·rō·wṯWLC · 15

I will come in the strength of the Lord GOD; I will proclaim Your righteousness— Yours alone.

𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤂𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤆𐤊𐤉𐤓 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤕𐤊 𐤋𐤁𐤃𐤊

אָב֗וֹא בִּ֭גְבֻרוֹת אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אַזְכִּ֖יר צִדְקָתְךָ֣ לְבַדֶּֽךָ׃ ’ā·ḇō·w biḡ·ḇu·rō·wṯ ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’az·kîr ṣiḏ·qā·ṯə·ḵā lə·ḇad·de·ḵāWLC · 16

17

O God, You have taught me from my youth, and to this day… I proclaim Your marvelous deeds.

𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤃𐤕𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤍𐤏𐤅𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤂𐤉𐤃 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊

אֱ‍ֽלֹהִ֗ים לִמַּדְתַּ֥נִי מִנְּעוּרָ֑י וְעַד־ הֵ֝֗נָּה אַגִּ֥יד נִפְלְאוֹתֶֽיךָ׃ ’ĕlō·hîm lim·maḏ·ta·nî min·nə·‘ū·rāy wə·‘aḏ- hên·nāh ’ag·gîḏ nip̄·lə·’ō·w·ṯe·ḵāWLC · 17

18

Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, until I proclaim Your power to the next generation, Your might to all who are to come.

וְגַ֤ם עַד־ זִקְנָ֨ה׀ וְשֵׂיבָה֮ אַֽל־ תַּעַ֫זְבֵ֥נִי אֱלֹהִ֪ים עַד־ אַגִּ֣יד זְרוֹעֲךָ֣ לְד֑וֹר גְּבוּרָתֶֽךָ׃ לְכָל־ יָ֝ב֗וֹא wə·ḡam ‘aḏ- ziq·nāh wə·śê·ḇāh ’al- ta·‘az·ḇê·nî ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘aḏ- ’ag·gîḏ zə·rō·w·‘ă·ḵā lə·ḏō·wr gə·ḇū·rā·ṯe·ḵā lə·ḵāl yā·ḇō·wWLC · 18

Your righteousness [reaches] to the heavens, O God, You who have done great things. Who, O God, is like You?

𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤕𐤊 𐤏𐤃 𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤌𐤅𐤊

וְצִדְקָתְךָ֥ עַד־ מָ֫ר֥וֹם אֱלֹהִ֗ים אֲשֶׁר־ עָשִׂ֥יתָ גְדֹל֑וֹת מִ֣י אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים כָמֽוֹךָ׃ wə·ṣiḏ·qā·ṯə·ḵā ‘aḏ- mā·rō·wm ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śî·ṯā ḡə·ḏō·lō·wṯ mî ’ĕ·lō·hîm ḵā·mō·w·ḵāWLC · 19

Though You have shown me many troubles and misfortunes, You will revive me once again. Even from the depths of the earth You will bring me back up.

אֲשֶׁ֤ר הִרְאִיתַנוּ רַבּ֗וֹת צָר֥וֹת וְרָ֫ע֥וֹת תְּחַיֵּינוּ תָּשׁ֥וּב וּֽמִתְּהֹמ֥וֹת הָ֝אָ֗רֶץ תַּעֲלֵֽנִי׃ תָּשׁ֥וּב ’ă·šer hir·ʾī·ṯa·nū rab·bō·wṯ ṣā·rō·wṯ wə·rā·‘ō·wṯ tə·ḥay·yē·nū tā·šūḇ ū·mit·tə·hō·mō·wṯ hā·’ā·reṣ ta·‘ă·lê·nî tā·šūḇWLC · 20

You will increase my honor and comfort me once again.

𐤕𐤓𐤁 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤕𐤍𐤇𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤎𐤁

תֶּ֤רֶב׀ גְּֽדֻלָּתִ֗י תְּֽנַחֲמֵֽנִי׃ וְתִסֹּ֥ב te·reḇ gə·ḏul·lā·ṯî tə·na·ḥă·mê·nî wə·ṯis·sōḇWLC · 21

22

So I will praise You with the harp… for Your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing praise to You with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel.

𐤂𐤌 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤃𐤊 𐤁𐤊𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤁𐤋 𐤀𐤌𐤕𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤆𐤌𐤓𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤊𐤍𐤅𐤓 𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

גַּם־ אֲנִ֤י׀ אוֹדְךָ֣ בִכְלִי־ נֶבֶל֮ אֲמִתְּךָ֪ אֱלֹ֫הָ֥י אֲזַמְּרָ֣ה לְךָ֣ בְכִנּ֑וֹר קְ֝ד֗וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ gam- ’ă·nî ’ō·wḏ·ḵā ḇiḵ·lî- ne·ḇel ’ă·mit·tə·ḵā ’ĕ·lō·hāy ’ă·zam·mə·rāh lə·ḵā ḇə·ḵin·nō·wr qə·ḏō·wōš yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 22

When I sing praise to You my lips will shout for joy, along with my soul, which You have redeemed.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤆𐤌𐤓𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤔𐤐𐤕𐤉 𐤕𐤓𐤍𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤐𐤃𐤉𐤕

כִּ֣י אֲזַמְּרָה־ לָּ֑ךְ שְׂ֭פָתַי תְּרַנֵּ֣נָּ֣ה וְ֝נַפְשִׁ֗י אֲשֶׁ֣ר פָּדִֽיתָ׃ kî ’ă·zam·mə·rāh- lāḵ śə·p̲ā·t̲ai tə·ran·nên·nāh wə·nap̄·šî ’ă·šer pā·ḏî·ṯāWLC · 23

My tongue will indeed proclaim Your righteousness all day long…, for those who seek my harm are disgraced and confounded.

לְשׁוֹנִ֗י תֶּהְגֶּ֣ה גַּם־ צִדְקָתֶ֑ךָ כָּל־ הַ֭יּוֹם כִּי־ מְבַקְשֵׁ֥י רָעָתִֽי׃ בֹ֥שׁוּ כִֽי־ חָ֝פְר֗וּ lə·šō·w·nî teh·geh gam- ṣiḏ·qā·ṯe·ḵā kāl- hay·yō·wm kî- mə·ḇaq·šê rā·‘ā·ṯî ḇō·šū ḵî- ḥā·p̄ə·rūWLC · 24
