Chapter 77

In the Day of Trouble I Sought the Lord

For the choirmaster. According to Jeduthun. A Psalm of Asaph. 1I cried out to God; I cried aloud… to God to hear me.

𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤑𐤇 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤕𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤆𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤑𐤏𐤒𐤄 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤆𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤋𐤉

לַמְנַצֵּ֥חַ עַֽל־ יְדִיתוּן מִזְמֽוֹר׃ לְאָסָ֥ף קוֹלִ֣י אֶל־ אֱלֹהִ֣ים וְאֶצְעָ֑קָה קוֹלִ֥י אֶל־ אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים וְהַאֲזִ֥ין אֵלָֽי׃ lam·naṣ·ṣê·aḥ ‘al- yə·ḏī·ṯūn miz·mō·wr lə·’ā·sāp̄ qō·w·lî ’el- ’ĕ·lō·hîm wə·’eṣ·‘ā·qāh qō·w·lî ’el- ’ĕ·lō·hîm wə·ha·’ă·zîn ’ê·lāyWLC · 1

In the day of trouble I sought the Lord; through the night my outstretched hands… did not grow weary; my soul refused to be comforted.

בְּי֥וֹם צָרָתִי֮ דָּ֫רָ֥שְׁתִּי אֲדֹנָ֪י לַ֣יְלָה יָדִ֤י׀ נִ֭גְּרָה וְלֹ֣א תָפ֑וּג נַפְשִֽׁי׃ מֵאֲנָ֖ה הִנָּחֵ֣ם bə·yō·wm ṣā·rā·ṯî dā·rā·šə·tî ’ă·ḏō·nāy lay·lāh yā·ḏî nig·gə·rāh wə·lō ṯā·p̄ūḡ nap̄·šî mê·’ă·nāh hin·nā·ḥêmWLC · 2

I remembered You, O God, and I groaned; I mused [and] my spirit grew faint. Selah

אֶזְכְּרָ֣ה אֱלֹהִ֣ים וְאֶֽהֱמָיָ֑ה אָשִׂ֓יחָה׀ רוּחִ֣י וְתִתְעַטֵּ֖ף סֶֽלָה׃ ’ez·kə·rāh ’ĕ·lō·hîm wə·’e·hĕ·mā·yāh ’ā·śî·ḥāh rū·ḥî wə·ṯiṯ·‘aṭ·ṭêp̄ se·lāhWLC · 3

You have kept my eyes from closing; I am too troubled… to speak.

אָ֭חַזְתָּ עֵינָ֑י שְׁמֻר֣וֹת נִ֝פְעַ֗מְתִּי וְלֹ֣א אֲדַבֵּֽר׃ ’ā·ḥaz·tā ‘ê·nāy šə·mu·rō·wṯ nip̄·‘am·tî wə·lō ’ă·ḏab·bêrWLC · 4

I considered the days of old, the years long in the past.

𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤉𐤌

חִשַּׁ֣בְתִּי יָמִ֣ים מִקֶּ֑דֶם שְׁ֝נ֗וֹת עוֹלָמִֽים׃ ḥiš·šaḇ·tî yā·mîm miq·qe·ḏem šə·nôt̲ ‘ō·w·lā·mîmWLC · 5

At night I remembered my song; in my heart I mused, [and] my spirit pondered:

𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤄 𐤍𐤂𐤉𐤍𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤇𐤄 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤐𐤔

בַּ֫לָּ֥יְלָה אֶֽזְכְּרָ֥ה נְגִינָתִ֗י עִם־ לְבָבִ֥י אָשִׂ֑יחָה רוּחִֽי׃ וַיְחַפֵּ֥שׂ bal·lā·yə·lāh ’ez·kə·rāh nə·ḡî·nā·ṯî ‘im- lə·ḇā·ḇî ’ā·śî·ḥāh rū·ḥî way·ḥap·pêśWLC · 6

“Will the Lord spurn [us] forever and never… show His favor again?

𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤆𐤍𐤇 𐤄𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤐 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤋𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕

אֲדֹנָ֑י יִזְנַ֥ח׀ הַֽ֭לְעוֹלָמִים וְלֹֽא־ יֹסִ֖יף עֽוֹד׃ לִרְצ֣וֹת ’ă·ḏō·nāy yiz·naḥ hal·‘ō·w·lā·mîm wə·lō- yō·sîp̄ ‘ō·wḏ lir·ṣō·wṯWLC · 7

Is His loving devotion gone forever? Has His promise failed for all time…?

𐤇𐤎𐤃𐤅 𐤄𐤀𐤐𐤎 𐤋𐤍𐤑𐤇 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤂𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤃𐤓 𐤅𐤃𐤓

חַסְדּ֑וֹ הֶאָפֵ֣ס לָנֶ֣צַח אֹ֝֗מֶר גָּ֥מַר לְדֹ֣ר וָדֹֽר׃ ḥas·dōw he·’ā·p̄ês lā·ne·ṣaḥ ’ō·mer gā·mar lə·ḏōr wā·ḏōrWLC · 8

Has God… forgotten to be gracious? Has His anger shut off His compassion?” Selah

𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤊𐤇 𐤇𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤐 𐤒𐤐𐤑 𐤓𐤇𐤌𐤉𐤅 𐤎𐤋𐤄

אֵ֑ל אִם־ הֲשָׁכַ֣ח חַנּ֣וֹת בְּ֝אַ֗ף קָפַ֥ץ רַחֲמָ֥יו סֶֽלָה׃ ’êl ’im- hă·šā·ḵaḥ ḥan·nō·wṯ bə·’ap̄ qā·p̄aṣ ra·ḥă·māw se·lāhWLC · 9

So I said, “I am grieved that the right hand of the Most High has changed…”

𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤇𐤋𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤔𐤍𐤅𐤕

וָ֭אֹמַר חַלּ֣וֹתִי יְמִ֣ין עֶלְיֽוֹן׃ הִ֑יא שְׁ֝נ֗וֹת wā·’ō·mar ḥal·lō·w·ṯî yə·mîn ‘el·yō·wn hî šə·nôt̲WLC · 10

I will remember the works of the LORD; yes, I will remember Your wonders of old.

𐤀𐤆𐤊𐤉𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤄 𐤐𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤌

אַזְכִּיר מַֽעַלְלֵי־ יָ֑הּ כִּֽי־ אֶזְכְּרָ֖ה פִּלְאֶֽךָ׃ מִקֶּ֣דֶם ʾaz·kīr ma·‘al·lê- yāh kî- ’ez·kə·rāh pil·’e·ḵā miq·qe·ḏemWLC · 11

I will reflect on all You have done and ponder Your mighty deeds.

𐤅𐤄𐤂𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤇𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊

וְהָגִ֥יתִי בְכָל־ פָּעֳלֶ֑ךָ אָשִֽׂיחָה׃ וּֽבַעֲלִ֖ילוֹתֶ֣יךָ wə·hā·ḡî·ṯî ḇə·ḵāl- pā·‘o·le·ḵā ’ā·śî·ḥāh ū·ḇa·‘ă·lî·lō·w·ṯe·ḵāWLC · 12

Your way, O God, is holy. What god [is so] great as [our] God?

𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤒𐤃𐤔 𐤌𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤊𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌

דַּרְכֶּ֑ךָ אֱ֭לֹהִים בַּקֹּ֣דֶשׁ מִי־ אֵ֥ל גָּ֝ד֗וֹל כֵּֽאלֹהִֽים׃ dar·ke·ḵā ’ĕ·lō·hîm baq·qō·ḏeš mî- ’êl gā·ḏō·wl kê·lō·hîmWLC · 13

You are the God who works wonders; You display Your strength among the peoples.

𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤐𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤏𐤆𐤊 𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌

אַתָּ֣ה הָ֭אֵל עֹ֣שֵׂה פֶ֑לֶא הוֹדַ֖עְתָּ עֻזֶּֽךָ׃ בָעַמִּ֣ים ’at·tāh hā·’êl ‘ō·śêh p̄e·le hō·w·ḏa‘·tā ‘uz·ze·ḵā ḇā·‘am·mîmWLC · 14

With power You redeemed Your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

בִּזְר֣וֹעַ גָּאַ֣לְתָּ עַמֶּ֑ךָ בְּנֵי־ יַעֲקֹ֖ב וְיוֹסֵ֣ף סֶֽלָה׃ biz·rō·w·a‘ gā·’al·tā ‘am·me·ḵā bə·nê- ya·‘ă·qōḇ wə·yō·w·sêp̄ se·lāhWLC · 15

The waters saw You, O God; the waters saw You and swirled; even the depths were shaken.

𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤊 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤐 𐤕𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤂𐤆𐤅

מַּ֨יִם׀ רָ֘א֤וּךָ אֱ‍ֽלֹהִ֗ים מַּ֣יִם רָא֣וּךָ יָחִ֑ילוּ אַ֝֗ף תְהֹמֽוֹת׃ יִרְגְּז֥וּ ma·yim rā·’ū·ḵā ’ĕlō·hîm ma·yim rā·’ū·ḵā yā·ḥî·lū ’ap̄ ṯə·hō·mō·wṯ yir·gə·zūWLC · 16

17

The clouds poured down water; the skies resounded with thunder; Your arrows flashed back and forth.

𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤆𐤓𐤌𐤅 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤇𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤐 𐤇𐤑𐤑𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤅

עָב֗וֹת זֹ֤רְמוּ מַ֨יִם׀ שְׁחָקִ֑ים נָתְנ֣וּ ק֭וֹל אַף־ חֲ֝צָצֶ֗יךָ יִתְהַלָּֽכוּ׃ ‘ā·ḇō·wṯ zō·rə·mū ma·yim šə·ḥā·qîm nā·ṯə·nū qō·wl ’ap̄- ḥă·ṣā·ṣe·ḵā yiṯ·hal·lā·ḵūWLC · 17

Your thunder resounded in the whirlwind; the lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked.

𐤓𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤁𐤂𐤋𐤂𐤋 𐤁𐤓𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤕𐤁𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤓𐤂𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤏𐤔

רַעַמְךָ֨׀ ק֤וֹל בַּגַּלְגַּ֗ל בְרָקִ֣ים הֵאִ֣ירוּ תֵּבֵ֑ל הָאָֽרֶץ׃ רָגְזָ֖ה וַתִּרְעַ֣שׁ ra·‘am·ḵā qō·wl bag·gal·gal ḇə·rā·qîm hê·’î·rū tê·ḇêl hā·’ā·reṣ rā·ḡə·zāh wat·tir·‘ašWLC · 18

Your path led through the sea, Your way through the mighty waters, but Your footprints were not to be found.

דַּרְכֶּ֗ךָ בַּיָּ֤ם וּשְׁבִילֶיךָ רַבִּ֑ים בְּמַ֣יִם וְ֝עִקְּבוֹתֶ֗יךָ לֹ֣א נֹדָֽעוּ׃ dar·ke·ḵā bay·yām ū·šə·ḇī·lɛ·ḵå̄ rab·bîm bə·ma·yim wə·‘iq·qə·ḇō·w·ṯe·ḵā lō nō·ḏā·‘ūWLC · 19

You led Your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
