Chapter 81

Sing for Joy to God Our Strength

1

For the choirmaster. According to Gittith. Of Asaph. 1Sing for joy to God our strength; make a joyful noise to the God of Jacob.

𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤑𐤇 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤕𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤄𐤓𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤆𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤏𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁

לַמְנַצֵּ֬חַ׀ עַֽל־ הַגִּתִּ֬ית לְאָסָֽף׃ הַ֭רְנִינוּ לֵאלֹהִ֣ים עוּזֵּ֑נוּ הָ֝רִ֗יעוּ לֵאלֹהֵ֥י יַעֲקֹֽב׃ lam·naṣ·ṣê·aḥ ‘al- hag·git·tîṯ lə·’ā·sāp̄ har·nî·nū lê·lō·hîm ‘ūz·zê·nū hā·rî·‘ū lê·lō·hê ya·‘ă·qōḇWLC · 1

Lift up a song, strike the tambourine, play the sweet-sounding harp and lyre.

𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤆𐤌𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤕𐤐 𐤍𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤁𐤋 𐤏𐤌 𐤊𐤍𐤅𐤓

שְֽׂאוּ־ זִ֭מְרָה וּתְנוּ־ תֹ֑ף נָעִ֣ים נָֽבֶל׃ עִם־ כִּנּ֖וֹר śə·’ū- zim·rāh ū·ṯə·nū- ṯōp̄ nā·‘îm nā·ḇel ‘im- kin·nō·wrWLC · 2

Sound the ram’s horn at the New Moon, [and] at the full moon on the day of our Feast.

𐤕𐤒𐤏𐤅 𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤓 𐤁𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤁𐤊𐤎𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤇𐤂𐤍𐤅

תִּקְע֣וּ שׁוֹפָ֑ר בַחֹ֣דֶשׁ בַּ֝כֵּ֗סֶה לְי֣וֹם חַגֵּֽנוּ׃ tiq·‘ū šō·w·p̄ār ḇa·ḥō·ḏeš bak·kê·seh lə·yō·wm ḥag·gê·nūWLC · 3

For this is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob.

𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤇𐤒 𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁

כִּ֤י ה֑וּא חֹ֣ק לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל מִ֝שְׁפָּ֗ט לֵאלֹהֵ֥י יַעֲקֹֽב׃ kî hū ḥōq lə·yiś·rā·’êl miš·pāṭ lê·lō·hê ya·‘ă·qōḇWLC · 4

He ordained it as a testimony for Joseph when he went out over the land of Egypt, [where] I heard an unfamiliar… language:

𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤁𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤐𐤕

שָׂמ֗וֹ עֵ֤דוּת׀ בִּֽיה֘וֹסֵ֤ף בְּ֭צֵאתוֹ עַל־ אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם אֶשְׁמָֽע׃ לֹא־ יָדַ֣עְתִּי שְׂפַ֖ת śā·mōw ‘ê·ḏūṯ bî·hō·w·sêp̄ bə·ṣê·ṯōw ‘al- ’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim ’eš·mā‘ lō- yā·ḏa‘·tî śə·p̄aṯWLC · 5

“I relieved his shoulder of the burden; his hands were freed from the basket.

𐤄𐤎𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤊𐤌𐤅 𐤌𐤎𐤁𐤋 𐤊𐤐𐤉𐤅 𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤃𐤅𐤃

הֲסִיר֣וֹתִי שִׁכְמ֑וֹ מִסֵּ֣בֶל כַּ֝פָּ֗יו תַּעֲבֹֽרְנָה׃ מִדּ֥וּד hă·sî·rō·w·ṯî šiḵ·mōw mis·sê·ḇel kap·pāw ta·‘ă·ḇō·rə·nāh mid·dūḏWLC · 6

You called out in distress, and I rescued you; I answered you from the cloud of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah

𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤑𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤋𐤑𐤊 𐤀𐤏𐤍𐤊 𐤁𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤓𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤇𐤍𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤉 𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤄 𐤎𐤋𐤄

קָרָ֗אתָ בַּצָּרָ֥ה וָאֲחַ֫לְּצֶ֥ךָּ אֶ֭עֶנְךָ בְּסֵ֣תֶר רַ֑עַם אֶבְחָֽנְךָ֨ עַל־ מֵ֖י מְרִיבָ֣ה סֶֽלָה׃ qā·rā·ṯā baṣ·ṣā·rāh wā·’ă·ḥal·lə·ṣe·kā ’e·‘en·ḵā bə·sê·ṯer ra·‘am ’eḇ·ḥā·nə·ḵā ‘al- mê mə·rî·ḇāh se·lāhWLC · 7

Hear, O My people, and I will warn you: O Israel, if only you would listen to Me!

𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤏𐤉𐤃𐤄 𐤁𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤋𐤉

שְׁמַ֣ע עַ֭מִּי וְאָעִ֣ידָה בָּ֑ךְ יִ֝שְׂרָאֵ֗ל אִם־ תִּֽשְׁמַֽע־ לִֽי׃ šə·ma‘ ‘am·mî wə·’ā·‘î·ḏāh bāḵ yiś·rā·’êl ’im- tiš·ma‘- lîWLC · 8

There must be no… strange god among you, nor shall you bow to a foreign god.

𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤆𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤊𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤋

לֹֽא־ יִהְיֶ֣ה זָ֑ר אֵ֣ל בְ֭ךָ וְלֹ֥א תִ֝שְׁתַּחֲוֶ֗ה נֵכָֽר׃ לְאֵ֣ל lō- yih·yeh zār ’êl ḇə·ḵā wə·lō ṯiš·ta·ḥă·weh nê·ḵār lə·’êlWLC · 9

I am the LORD your God, who brought you up vvv out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth…, and I will fill it.

𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤉𐤊 𐤄𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤄𐤅

אָנֹכִ֨י׀ יְה֘וָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ הַֽ֭מַּעַלְךָ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם פִּ֝֗יךָ הַרְחֶב־ וַאֲמַלְאֵֽהוּ׃ ’ā·nō·ḵî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ham·ma·‘al·ḵā mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim pî·ḵā har·ḥeḇ- wa·’ă·mal·’ê·hūWLC · 10

But My people… would not listen to Me, and Israel would not obey Me.

𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤉

עַמִּ֣י לְקוֹלִ֑י וְלֹא־ שָׁמַ֣ע וְ֝יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל לֹא־ אָ֥בָה לִֽי׃ ‘am·mî lə·qō·w·lî wə·lō- šā·ma‘ wə·yiś·rā·’êl lō- ’ā·ḇāh lîWLC · 11

So I gave them up to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.

𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤌 𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤑𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌

וָֽ֭אֲשַׁלְּחֵהוּ בִּשְׁרִיר֣וּת לִבָּ֑ם יֵ֝לְכ֗וּ בְּֽמוֹעֲצוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ wā·’ă·šal·lə·ḥê·hū biš·rî·rūṯ lib·bām yê·lə·ḵū bə·mō·w·‘ă·ṣō·w·ṯê·hemWLC · 12

If only My people would listen to Me, if Israel would follow My ways,

𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉

ל֗וּ עַ֭מִּי שֹׁמֵ֣עַֽ לִ֑י יִ֝שְׂרָאֵ֗ל יְהַלֵּֽכוּ׃ בִּדְרָכַ֥י lū ‘am·mî šō·mê·a‘ lî yiś·rā·’êl yə·hal·lê·ḵū biḏ·rā·ḵayWLC · 13

how soon I would subdue their enemies and turn My hand against their foes!

𐤊𐤌𐤏𐤈 𐤀𐤊𐤍𐤉𐤏 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌

כִּ֭מְעַט אַכְנִ֑יעַ אוֹיְבֵיהֶ֣ם אָשִׁ֥יב יָדִֽי׃ וְעַ֥ל צָ֝רֵיהֶ֗ם kim·‘aṭ ’aḵ·nî·a‘ ’ō·wy·ḇê·hem ’ā·šîḇ yā·ḏî wə·‘al ṣā·rê·hemWLC · 14

Those who hate the LORD would feign obedience and their doom would last forever…

𐤌𐤔𐤍𐤀𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤊𐤇𐤔𐤅 𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌

מְשַׂנְאֵ֣י יְ֭הוָה יְכַֽחֲשׁוּ־ ל֑וֹ עִתָּ֣ם וִיהִ֖י לְעוֹלָֽם׃ mə·śan·’ê Yah·weh yə·ḵa·ḥă·šū- lōw ‘it·tām wî·hî lə·‘ō·w·lāmWLC · 15

16

But I would feed you the finest wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤋𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤇𐤋𐤁 𐤇𐤈𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤔 𐤅𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤊

וַֽ֭יַּאֲכִילֵהוּ מֵחֵ֣לֶב חִטָּ֑ה דְּבַ֣שׁ וּ֝מִצּ֗וּר אַשְׂבִּיעֶֽךָ׃ way·ya·’ă·ḵî·lê·hū mê·ḥê·leḇ ḥiṭ·ṭāh də·ḇaš ū·miṣ·ṣūr ’aś·bî·‘e·ḵāWLC · 16
