God Presides in the Divine Assembly

A Psalm of Asaph. 1God presides in the divine assembly; He renders judgment among the gods:

מִזְמ֗וֹר לְאָ֫סָ֥ף אֱֽלֹהִ֗ים נִצָּ֥ב אֵ֑ל בַּעֲדַת־ יִשְׁפֹּֽט׃ בְּקֶ֖רֶב אֱלֹהִ֣ים miz·mō·wr lə·’ā·sāp̄ ’ĕlō·hîm niṣ·ṣāḇ ’êl ba·‘ă·ḏaṯ- yiš·pōṭ bə·qe·reḇ ’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 1

“How long… will you judge unjustly and show partiality… to the wicked? Selah

עַד־ מָתַ֥י תִּשְׁפְּטוּ־ עָ֑וֶל וּפְנֵ֥י תִּשְׂאוּ־ רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים סֶֽלָה׃ ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay tiš·pə·ṭū- ‘ā·wel ū·p̄ə·nê tiś·’ū- rə·šā·‘îm se·lāh — WLC · 2

Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; uphold the rights of the afflicted and oppressed.

שִׁפְטוּ־ דַ֥ל וְיָת֑וֹם הַצְדִּֽיקוּ׃ עָנִ֖י וָרָ֣שׁ šip̄·ṭū- ḏal wə·yā·ṯō·wm haṣ·dî·qū ‘ā·nî wā·rāš — WLC · 3

Rescue the weak and needy; save them from the hand of the wicked.
𐤐𐤋𐤈𐤅 𐤃𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤑𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌
פַּלְּטוּ־ דַ֥ל וְאֶבְי֑וֹן הַצִּֽילוּ׃ מִיַּ֖ד רְשָׁעִ֣ים pal·lə·ṭū- ḏal wə·’eḇ·yō·wn haṣ·ṣî·lū mî·yaḏ rə·šā·‘îm — WLC · 4

They do not know… or understand; they wander in the darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

לֹ֤א יָֽדְע֨וּ׀ וְלֹ֥א יָבִ֗ינוּ יִתְהַלָּ֑כוּ בַּחֲשֵׁכָ֥ה כָּל־ מ֥וֹסְדֵי אָֽרֶץ׃ יִ֝מּ֗וֹטוּ lō yā·ḏə·‘ū wə·lō yā·ḇî·nū yiṯ·hal·lā·ḵū ba·ḥă·šê·ḵāh kāl- mō·ws·ḏê ’ā·reṣ yim·mō·w·ṭū — WLC · 5

I have said, ‘You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High.’

אֲֽנִי־ אָ֭מַרְתִּי אַתֶּ֑ם אֱלֹהִ֣ים כֻּלְּכֶֽם׃ וּבְנֵ֖י עֶלְי֣וֹן ’ănî- ’ā·mar·tî ’at·tem ’ĕ·lō·hîm kul·lə·ḵem ū·ḇə·nê ‘el·yō·wn — WLC · 6

But like mortals you will die, and like rulers you will fall.”

אָ֭כֵן כְּאָדָ֣ם תְּמוּת֑וּן וּכְאַחַ֖ד הַשָּׂרִ֣ים תִּפֹּֽלוּ׃ ’ā·ḵên kə·’ā·ḏām tə·mū·ṯūn ū·ḵə·’a·ḥaḏ haś·śā·rîm tip·pō·lū — WLC · 7

Arise, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are Your inheritance.

קוּמָ֣ה אֱ֭לֹהִים שָׁפְטָ֣ה הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּֽי־ בְּכָל־ הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ אַתָּ֥ה תִ֝נְחַ֗ל qū·māh ’ĕ·lō·hîm šā·p̄ə·ṭāh hā·’ā·reṣ kî- bə·ḵāl hag·gō·w·yim ’at·tāh ṯin·ḥal — WLC · 8
