Chapter 91
You Are My Refuge and My Fortress
1
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤕𐤋𐤅𐤍𐤍 𐤁𐤑𐤋 𐤔𐤃𐤉
יֹ֭שֵׁב בְּסֵ֣תֶר עֶלְי֑וֹן יִתְלוֹנָֽן׃ בְּצֵ֥ל שַׁ֝דַּ֗י yō·šêḇ bə·sê·ṯer ‘el·yō·wn yiṯ·lō·w·nān bə·ṣêl šad·dai — WLC · 1

I will say to the LORD, “[You are] my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust
𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤇𐤎𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤈𐤇 𐤁𐤅
אֹמַ֗ר לַֽ֭יהוָה מַחְסִ֣י וּמְצוּדָתִ֑י אֱ֝לֹהַ֗י אֶבְטַח־ בּֽוֹ׃ ’ō·mar Yah·weh maḥ·sî ū·mə·ṣū·ḏā·ṯî ’ĕ·lō·hay ’eḇ·ṭaḥ- bōw — WLC · 2

Surely He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly plague.
𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤑𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤐𐤇 𐤉𐤒𐤅𐤔 𐤄𐤅𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓
כִּ֤י ה֣וּא יַ֭צִּֽילְךָ מִפַּ֥ח יָק֗וּשׁ הַוּֽוֹת׃ מִדֶּ֥בֶר kî hū yaṣ·ṣî·lə·ḵā mip·paḥ yā·qūš haw·wō·wṯ mid·de·ḇer — WLC · 3

He will cover you with His feathers; under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and rampart.
𐤉𐤎𐤊 𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤅 𐤕𐤇𐤎𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤕𐤅 𐤑𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤎𐤇𐤓𐤄
יָ֣סֶךְ לָ֭ךְ בְּאֶבְרָת֨וֹ׀ וְתַֽחַת־ כְּנָפָ֣יו תֶּחְסֶ֑ה אֲמִתּֽוֹ׃ צִנָּ֖ה וְֽסֹחֵרָ֣ה yā·seḵ lāḵ bə·’eḇ·rā·ṯōw wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ- kə·nā·p̄āw teḥ·seh ’ă·mit·tōw ṣin·nāh wə·sō·ḥê·rāh — WLC · 4

You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤌𐤐𐤇𐤃 𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤇𐤑 𐤉𐤏𐤅𐤐 𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤌
לֹא־ תִ֭ירָא מִפַּ֣חַד לָ֑יְלָה מֵ֝חֵ֗ץ יָע֥וּף יוֹמָֽם׃ lō- ṯî·rā mip·pa·ḥaḏ lā·yə·lāh mê·ḥêṣ yā·‘ūp̄ yō·w·mām — WLC · 5

[nor] the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, [nor] the calamity that destroys at noon.
𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤀𐤐𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤈𐤁 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤃 𐤑𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌
מִ֭דֶּבֶר יַהֲלֹ֑ךְ בָּאֹ֣פֶל מִ֝קֶּ֗טֶב יָשׁ֥וּד צָהֳרָֽיִם׃ mid·de·ḇer ya·hă·lōḵ bā·’ō·p̄el miq·qe·ṭeḇ yā·šūḏ ṣā·ho·rā·yim — WLC · 6
7
Though a thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, no [harm] will come near you.
𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤉𐤐𐤋 𐤌𐤑𐤃𐤊 𐤅𐤓𐤁𐤁𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤂𐤔
אֶ֗לֶף יִפֹּ֤ל מִצִּדְּךָ֨׀ וּרְבָבָ֥ה מִימִינֶ֑ךָ לֹ֣א אֵ֝לֶ֗יךָ יִגָּֽשׁ׃ ’e·lep̄ yip·pōl miṣ·ṣid·də·ḵā ū·rə·ḇā·ḇāh mî·mî·ne·ḵā lō ’ê·le·ḵā yig·gāš — WLC · 7

You will only see it with your eyes and witness the punishment of the wicked.

רַ֭ק תַבִּ֑יט בְּעֵינֶ֣יךָ תִּרְאֶֽה׃ וְשִׁלֻּמַ֖ת רְשָׁעִ֣ים raq ṯab·bîṭ bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā tir·’eh wə·šil·lu·maṯ rə·šā·‘îm — WLC · 8

Because you have made the LORD your dwelling— my refuge, the Most High—
𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤊 𐤌𐤇𐤎𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍
כִּֽי־ אַתָּ֣ה שַׂ֣מְתָּ יְהוָ֣ה מְעוֹנֶֽךָ׃ מַחְסִ֑י עֶ֝לְי֗וֹן kî- ’at·tāh śam·tā Yah·weh mə·‘ō·w·ne·ḵā maḥ·sî ‘el·yō·wn — WLC · 9
10
no evil will befall you, no plague will approach your tent.
𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤕𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤍𐤂𐤏 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤊
לֹֽא־ רָעָ֑ה תְאֻנֶּ֣ה אֵלֶ֣יךָ לֹא־ וְ֝נֶ֗גַע יִקְרַ֥ב בְּאָהֳלֶֽךָ׃ lō- rā·‘āh ṯə·’un·neh ’ê·le·ḵā lō- wə·ne·ḡa‘ yiq·raḇ bə·’ā·ho·le·ḵā — WLC · 10

For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.
𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤊 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤊
כִּ֣י יְצַוֶּה־ מַ֭לְאָכָיו לָּ֑ךְ לִ֝שְׁמָרְךָ֗ בְּכָל־ דְּרָכֶֽיךָ׃ kî yə·ṣaw·weh- mal·’ā·ḵāw lāḵ liš·mā·rə·ḵā bə·ḵāl də·rā·ḵe·ḵā — WLC · 11

They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤍𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤍 𐤕𐤂𐤐 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤀𐤁𐤍
יִשָּׂא֑וּנְךָ עַל־ כַּפַּ֥יִם פֶּן־ תִּגֹּ֖ף רַגְלֶֽךָ׃ בָּאֶ֣בֶן yiś·śā·’ū·nə·ḵā ‘al- kap·pa·yim pen- tig·gōp̄ raḡ·le·ḵā bā·’e·ḇen — WLC · 12

You will tread on the lion and cobra; you will trample the young lion and serpent.
𐤕𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤇𐤋 𐤅𐤐𐤕𐤍 𐤕𐤓𐤌𐤎 𐤊𐤐𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤍
תִּדְרֹ֑ךְ עַל־ שַׁ֣חַל וָפֶ֣תֶן תִּרְמֹ֖ס כְּפִ֣יר וְתַנִּֽין׃ tiḏ·rōḵ ‘al- ša·ḥal wā·p̄e·ṯen tir·mōs kə·p̄îr wə·ṯan·nîn — WLC · 13

“Because he loves Me, I will deliver him; because he knows My name, I will protect him.
𐤊𐤉 𐤇𐤔𐤒 𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤐𐤋𐤈𐤄𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤔𐤌𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤂𐤁𐤄𐤅
כִּ֤י חָ֭שַׁק בִ֣י וַאֲפַלְּטֵ֑הוּ כִּֽי־ יָדַ֥ע שְׁמִֽי׃ אֲ֝שַׂגְּבֵ֗הוּ kî ḥā·šaq ḇî wa·’ă·p̄al·lə·ṭê·hū kî- yā·ḏa‘ šə·mî ’ă·śag·gə·ḇê·hū — WLC · 14
15
When he calls out to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him.
𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤏𐤍𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤁𐤑𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤋𐤑𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤁𐤃𐤄𐤅
יִקְרָאֵ֨נִי׀ וְֽאֶעֱנֵ֗הוּ אָנֹכִ֥י עִמּֽוֹ־ בְצָרָ֑ה אֲ֝חַלְּצֵ֗הוּ וַֽאֲכַבְּדֵֽהוּ׃ yiq·rā·’ê·nî wə·’e·‘ĕ·nê·hū ’ā·nō·ḵî ‘im·mōw- ḇə·ṣā·rāh ’ă·ḥal·lə·ṣê·hū wa·’ă·ḵab·bə·ḏê·hū — WLC · 15

With long life I will satisfy him and show him My salvation.”

אֹ֣רֶךְ יָ֭מִים אַשְׂבִּיעֵ֑הוּ וְ֝אַרְאֵ֗הוּ בִּֽישׁוּעָתִֽי׃ ’ō·reḵ yā·mîm ’aś·bî·‘ê·hū wə·’ar·’ê·hū bî·šū·‘ā·ṯî — WLC · 16
