Chapter 94

The LORD Will Not Forget His People

1

O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤒𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤒𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤅𐤐𐤉𐤏

יְהוָ֑ה אֵל־ נְקָמ֥וֹת אֵ֖ל נְקָמ֣וֹת הוֹפִֽיַע׃ Yah·weh ’êl- nə·qā·mō·wṯ ’êl nə·qā·mō·wṯ hō·w·p̄i·ya‘WLC · 1

Rise up, O Judge of the earth; render a reward to the proud.

𐤄𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤄𐤔𐤁 𐤂𐤌𐤅𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤂𐤀𐤉𐤌

הִ֭נָּשֵׂא שֹׁפֵ֣ט הָאָ֑רֶץ הָשֵׁ֥ב גְּ֝מ֗וּל עַל־ גֵּאִֽים׃ hin·nā·śê šō·p̄êṭ hā·’ā·reṣ hā·šêḇ gə·mūl ‘al- gê·’îmWLC · 2

How long… will the wicked, O LORD, how long… will the wicked exult?

𐤏𐤃 𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤃 𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤆𐤅

עַד־ מָתַ֖י רְשָׁעִ֥ים׀ יְהוָ֑ה עַד־ מָ֝תַ֗י רְשָׁעִ֥ים יַעֲלֹֽזוּ׃ ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay rə·šā·‘îm Yah·weh ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay rə·šā·‘îm ya·‘ă·lō·zūWLC · 3

They pour out arrogant words; all workers of iniquity boast.

𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤅 𐤏𐤕𐤒 𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅

יַבִּ֣יעוּ עָתָ֑ק יְדַבְּר֣וּ כָּל־ פֹּ֥עֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃ יִֽ֝תְאַמְּר֗וּ yab·bî·‘ū ‘ā·ṯāq yə·ḏab·bə·rū kāl- pō·‘ă·lê ’ā·wen yiṯ·’am·mə·rūWLC · 4

They crush Your people, O LORD; they oppress Your heritage.

𐤉𐤃𐤊𐤀𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤕𐤊

יְדַכְּא֑וּ עַמְּךָ֣ יְהוָ֣ה יְעַנּֽוּ׃ וְֽנַחֲלָתְךָ֥ yə·ḏak·kə·’ū ‘am·mə·ḵā Yah·weh yə·‘an·nū wə·na·ḥă·lā·ṯə·ḵāWLC · 5

They kill the widow and the foreigner; they murder the fatherless.

𐤉𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤂𐤓 𐤉𐤓𐤑𐤇𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤌

יַהֲרֹ֑גוּ אַ֭לְמָנָה וְגֵ֣ר יְרַצֵּֽחוּ׃ וִֽיתוֹמִ֣ים ya·hă·rō·ḡū ’al·mā·nāh wə·ḡêr yə·raṣ·ṣê·ḥū wî·ṯō·w·mîmWLC · 6

They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob vvv pays no heed.”

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤍

וַ֭יֹּ֣אמְרוּ יָּ֑הּ לֹ֣א יִרְאֶה־ אֱלֹהֵ֥י יַעֲקֹֽב׃ וְלֹא־ יָ֝בִ֗ין way·yō·mə·rū yāh lō yir·’eh- ’ĕ·lō·hê ya·‘ă·qōḇ wə·lō- yā·ḇînWLC · 7

Take notice, O senseless among the people! O fools, when will you be wise?

𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤎𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤕𐤔𐤊𐤉𐤋𐤅

בִּ֭ינוּ בֹּעֲרִ֣ים בָּעָ֑ם וּ֝כְסִילִ֗ים מָתַ֥י תַּשְׂכִּֽילוּ׃ bî·nū bō·‘ă·rîm bā·‘ām ū·ḵə·sî·lîm mā·ṯay taś·kî·lūWLC · 8

He who affixed the ear, can He not hear? He who formed the eye, can He not see?

𐤄𐤍𐤈𐤏 𐤀𐤆𐤍 𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤑𐤓 𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤈

הֲנֹ֣טַֽע אֹ֭זֶן הֲלֹ֣א יִשְׁמָ֑ע אִֽם־ יֹ֥צֵֽר עַ֝֗יִן הֲלֹ֣א יַבִּֽיט׃ hă·nō·ṭa‘ ’ō·zen hă·lō yiš·mā‘ ’im- yō·ṣêr ‘a·yin hă·lō yab·bîṭWLC · 9

He who admonishes the nations, does He not discipline? He who teaches man, does He [lack] knowledge?

𐤄𐤉𐤎𐤓 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤅𐤊𐤉𐤇 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤃𐤏𐤕

הֲיֹסֵ֣ר גּ֭וֹיִם הֲלֹ֣א יוֹכִ֑יחַ הַֽמְלַמֵּ֖ד אָדָ֣ם דָּֽעַת׃ hă·yō·sêr gō·w·yim hă·lō yō·w·ḵî·aḥ ham·lam·mêḏ ’ā·ḏām dā·‘aṯWLC · 10

The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are futile.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤌𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤁𐤋

יְֽהוָ֗ה יֹ֭דֵעַ מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת אָדָ֑ם כִּי־ הֵ֥מָּה הָֽבֶל׃ Yah·weh yō·ḏê·a‘ maḥ·šə·ḇō·wṯ ’ā·ḏām kî- hêm·māh hā·ḇelWLC · 11

Blessed [is] the man You discipline, O LORD, and teach from Your law,

𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤉𐤎𐤓𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤄 𐤕𐤋𐤌𐤃𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤊

אַשְׁרֵ֤י׀ הַגֶּ֣בֶר אֲשֶׁר־ תְּיַסְּרֶ֣נּוּ יָּ֑הּ תְלַמְּדֶֽנּוּ׃ וּֽמִתּוֹרָתְךָ֥ ’aš·rê hag·ge·ḇer ’ă·šer- tə·yas·sə·ren·nū yāh ṯə·lam·mə·ḏen·nū ū·mit·tō·w·rā·ṯə·ḵāWLC · 12

to grant him relief from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked.

𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤒𐤉𐤈 𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤓𐤏 𐤏𐤃 𐤔𐤇𐤕 𐤉𐤊𐤓𐤄 𐤋𐤓𐤔𐤏

לְהַשְׁקִ֣יט ל֭וֹ מִ֣ימֵי רָ֑ע עַ֤ד שָֽׁחַת׃ יִכָּרֶ֖ה לָרָשָׁ֣ע lə·haš·qîṭ lōw mî·mê rā‘ ‘aḏ šā·ḥaṯ yik·kā·reh lā·rā·šā‘WLC · 13

14

For the LORD will not forsake His people; He will never abandon His heritage.

𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤈𐤔 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤁 𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤕𐤅

כִּ֤י׀ יְהוָ֣ה לֹא־ יִטֹּ֣שׁ עַמּ֑וֹ לֹ֣א יַעֲזֹֽב׃ וְ֝נַחֲלָת֗וֹ kî Yah·weh lō- yiṭ·ṭōš ‘am·mōw lō ya·‘ă·zōḇ wə·na·ḥă·lā·ṯōwWLC · 14

15

Surely… judgment will again be righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it.

𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤃 𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤅

כִּֽי־ עַד־ צֶ֭דֶק יָשׁ֣וּב מִשְׁפָּ֑ט כָּל־ יִשְׁרֵי־ לֵֽב׃ וְ֝אַחֲרָ֗יו kî- ‘aḏ- ṣe·ḏeq yā·šūḇ miš·pāṭ kāl- yiš·rê- lêḇ wə·’a·ḥă·rāwWLC · 15

16

Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will stand for me against the workers of iniquity?

𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤉 𐤏𐤌 𐤌𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤑𐤁 𐤋𐤉 𐤏𐤌 𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤍

מִֽי־ יָק֣וּם לִ֭י עִם־ מְרֵעִ֑ים מִֽי־ יִתְיַצֵּ֥ב לִ֝י עִם־ פֹּ֥עֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃ mî- yā·qūm lî ‘im- mə·rê·‘îm mî- yiṯ·yaṣ·ṣêḇ lî ‘im- pō·‘ă·lê ’ā·wenWLC · 16

17

Unless the LORD had been my helper I would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence.

𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤊𐤌𐤏𐤈 𐤔𐤊𐤍𐤄 𐤃𐤅𐤌𐤄

לוּלֵ֣י יְ֭הוָה עֶזְרָ֣תָה לִּ֑י נַפְשִֽׁי׃ כִּמְעַ֓ט׀ שָֽׁכְנָ֖ה דוּמָ֣ה lū·lê Yah·weh ‘ez·rā·ṯāh lî nap̄·šî kim·‘aṭ šā·ḵə·nāh ḏū·māhWLC · 17

18

If I say, “My foot is slipping,” Your loving devotion, O LORD, supports me.

𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤈𐤄 𐤇𐤎𐤃𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤎𐤏𐤃𐤍𐤉

אִם־ אָ֭מַרְתִּי רַגְלִ֑י מָ֣טָה חַסְדְּךָ֥ יְ֝הוָ֗ה יִסְעָדֵֽנִי׃ ’im- ’ā·mar·tî raḡ·lî mā·ṭāh ḥas·də·ḵā Yah·weh yis·‘ā·ḏê·nîWLC · 18

19

When anxiety overwhelms me…, Your consolation delights my soul.

𐤔𐤓𐤏𐤐𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤉 𐤕𐤍𐤇𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤏𐤔𐤏𐤅 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉

שַׂרְעַפַּ֣י בְּרֹ֣ב בְּקִרְבִּ֑י תַּ֝נְחוּמֶ֗יךָ יְֽשַׁעַשְׁע֥וּ נַפְשִֽׁי׃ śar·‘ap·pay bə·rōḇ bə·qir·bî tan·ḥū·me·ḵā yə·ša·‘aš·‘ū nap̄·šîWLC · 19

20

Can a corrupt throne be Your ally— one devising mischief by decree?

𐤄𐤅𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤎𐤀 𐤄𐤉𐤇𐤁𐤓𐤊 𐤉𐤑𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤇𐤒

הַוּ֑וֹת כִּסֵּ֣א הַֽ֭יְחָבְרְךָ יֹצֵ֖ר עָמָ֣ל עֲלֵי־ חֹֽק׃ haw·wō·wṯ kis·sê hay·ḥā·ḇə·rə·ḵā yō·ṣêr ‘ā·māl ‘ă·lê- ḥōqWLC · 20

21

They band together against vvv the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.

𐤉𐤂𐤅𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤉𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤅 𐤍𐤒𐤉 𐤅𐤃𐤌

יָ֭גוֹדּוּ עַל־ נֶ֣פֶשׁ צַדִּ֑יק יַרְשִֽׁיעוּ׃ נָקִ֣י וְדָ֖ם yā·ḡō·w·dū ‘al- ne·p̄eš ṣad·dîq yar·šî·‘ū nā·qî wə·ḏāmWLC · 21

22

But the LORD has been my stronghold, and my God is my rock of refuge.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤂𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤑𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤇𐤎𐤉

יְהוָ֣ה וַיְהִ֬י לִ֣י לְמִשְׂגָּ֑ב וֵ֝אלֹהַ֗י לְצ֣וּר מַחְסִֽי׃ Yah·weh way·hî lî lə·miś·gāḇ wê·lō·hay lə·ṣūr maḥ·sîWLC · 22

23

He will bring upon them their own iniquity and destroy them for their wickedness. The LORD our God will destroy them.

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤅𐤍𐤌 𐤉𐤑𐤌𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤑𐤌𐤉𐤕𐤌

וַיָּ֤שֶׁב עֲלֵיהֶ֨ם׀ אֶת־ אוֹנָ֗ם יַצְמִיתֵ֑ם וּבְרָעָתָ֥ם יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ יַ֝צְמִיתֵ֗ם way·yā·šeḇ ‘ă·lê·hem ’eṯ- ’ō·w·nām yaṣ·mî·ṯêm ū·ḇə·rā·‘ā·ṯām Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū yaṣ·mî·ṯêmWLC · 23
