Solomon’s Proverbs: The Wise Son

The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother.

מִשְׁלֵ֗י שְׁלֹ֫מֹ֥ה פ חָ֭כָם בֵּ֣ן יְשַׂמַּח־ אָ֑ב כְּ֝סִ֗יל וּבֵ֥ן תּוּגַ֥ת אִמּֽוֹ׃ miš·lê šə·lō·mōh p̄ ḥā·ḵām bên yə·śam·maḥ- ’āḇ kə·sîl ū·ḇên tū·ḡaṯ ’im·mōwWLC · 1

Ill-gotten treasures profit nothing, but righteousness brings deliverance from death.

רֶ֑שַׁע אוֹצְר֣וֹת י֭וֹעִילוּ לֹא־ וּ֝צְדָקָ֗ה תַּצִּ֥יל מִמָּֽוֶת׃ re·ša‘ ’ō·wṣ·rō·wṯ yō·w·‘î·lū lō- ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāh taṣ·ṣîl mim·mā·weṯWLC · 2

The LORD… does not let the righteous go hungry, but He denies the craving of the wicked.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤋𐤀 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤉𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤁 𐤉𐤄𐤃𐤐 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌

יְ֭הוָה נֶ֣פֶשׁ לֹֽא־ צַדִּ֑יק יַרְעִ֣יב יֶהְדֹּֽף׃ וְהַוַּ֖ת רְשָׁעִ֣ים Yah·weh ne·p̄eš lō- ṣad·dîq yar·‘îḇ yeh·dōp̄ wə·haw·waṯ rə·šā·‘îmWLC · 3

Idle hands make one poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.

רְמִיָּ֑ה כַף־ עֹשֶׂ֥ה רָ֗אשׁ חָרוּצִ֣ים וְיַ֖ד תַּעֲשִֽׁיר׃ rə·mî·yāh ḵap̄- ‘ō·śeh rāš ḥā·rū·ṣîm wə·yaḏ ta·‘ă·šîrWLC · 4

He who gathers in summer [is] a wise son, [but] he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.

אֹגֵ֣ר בַּ֭קַּיִץ מַשְׂכִּ֑יל בֵּ֣ן נִרְדָּ֥ם בַּ֝קָּצִ֗יר מֵבִֽישׁ׃ בֵּ֣ן ’ō·ḡêr baq·qa·yiṣ maś·kîl bên nir·dām baq·qā·ṣîr mê·ḇîš bênWLC · 5

Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

בְּ֭רָכוֹת לְרֹ֣אשׁ צַדִּ֑יק וּפִ֥י רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים יְכַסֶּ֥ה חָמָֽס׃ bə·rā·ḵō·wṯ lə·rōš ṣad·dîq ū·p̄î rə·šā·‘îm yə·ḵas·seh ḥā·māsWLC · 6

The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.

𐤆𐤊𐤓 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤋𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤒𐤁

זֵ֣כֶר צַ֭דִּיק לִבְרָכָ֑ה וְשֵׁ֖ם רְשָׁעִ֣ים יִרְקָֽב׃ zê·ḵer ṣad·dîq liḇ·rā·ḵāh wə·šêm rə·šā·‘îm yir·qāḇWLC · 7

A wise heart will receive commandments, but foolish lips will come to ruin.

חֲכַם־ לֵ֭ב יִקַּ֣ח מִצְוֺ֑ת וֶאֱוִ֥יל שְׂ֝פָתַ֗יִם יִלָּבֵֽט׃ ḥă·ḵam- lêḇ yiq·qaḥ miṣ·wōṯ we·’ĕ·wîl śə·p̲ā·t̲a·yim yil·lā·ḇêṭWLC · 8

He who walks in integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will be found out.

He who winks the eye causes grief, and foolish lips will come to ruin.

The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

Hatred stirs up dissension…, but love covers all transgressions.

שִׂ֭נְאָה תְּעוֹרֵ֣ר מְדָנִ֑ים וְעַ֥ל אַהֲבָֽה׃ תְּכַסֶּ֥ה כָּל־ פְּ֝שָׁעִ֗ים śin·ʾāh tə·‘ō·w·rêr mə·ḏā·nîm wə·‘al ’a·hă·ḇāh tə·ḵas·seh kāl- pə·šā·‘îmWLC · 12

Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment.

חָכְמָ֑ה תִּמָּצֵ֣א בְּשִׂפְתֵ֣י נָ֭בוֹן וְ֝שֵׁ֗בֶט לְגֵ֣ו חֲסַר־ לֵֽב׃ ḥāḵ·māh tim·mā·ṣê bə·śip̄·ṯê nā·ḇō·wn wə·šê·ḇeṭ lə·ḡêw ḥă·sar- lêḇWLC · 13

The wise store up knowledge, but the mouth of the fool invites destruction.

חֲכָמִ֥ים יִצְפְּנוּ־ דָ֑עַת וּפִֽי־ אֱ֝וִיל קְרֹבָֽה׃ מְחִתָּ֥ה ḥă·ḵā·mîm yiṣ·pə·nū- ḏā·‘aṯ ū·p̄î- ’ĕ·wîl qə·rō·ḇāh mə·ḥit·tāhWLC · 14

The wealth of the rich man is his fortified city, but poverty is the ruin of the poor.

ה֣וֹן עָ֭שִׁיר עֻזּ֑וֹ קִרְיַ֣ת רֵישָֽׁם׃ מְחִתַּ֖ת דַּלִּ֣ים hō·wn ‘ā·šîr ‘uz·zōw qir·yaṯ rê·šām mə·ḥit·taṯ dal·lîmWLC · 15

16

The labor of the righteous leads to life, [but] the gain of the wicked [brings] punishment.

𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤕 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤋𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤋𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕

פְּעֻלַּ֣ת צַדִּ֣יק לְחַיִּ֑ים תְּבוּאַ֖ת רָשָׁ֣ע לְחַטָּֽאת׃ pə·‘ul·laṯ ṣad·dîq lə·ḥay·yîm tə·ḇū·’aṯ rā·šā‘ lə·ḥaṭ·ṭāṯWLC · 16

17

Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who ignores reproof goes astray.

𐤔𐤅𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤅𐤎𐤓 𐤀𐤓𐤇 𐤋𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤅𐤆𐤁 𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤕𐤏𐤄

שׁוֹמֵ֣ר מוּסָ֑ר אֹ֣רַח לְ֭חַיִּים וְעוֹזֵ֖ב תּוֹכַ֣חַת מַתְעֶֽה׃ šō·w·mêr mū·sār ’ō·raḥ lə·ḥay·yîm wə·‘ō·w·zêḇ tō·w·ḵa·ḥaṯ maṯ·‘ehWLC · 17

The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander… is a fool.

מְכַסֶּ֣ה שִׂ֭נְאָה שָׁ֑קֶר שִׂפְתֵי־ וּמוֹצִ֥א דִ֝בָּ֗ה ה֣וּא כְסִֽיל׃ mə·ḵas·seh śin·ʾāh šā·qer śip̄·ṯê- ū·mō·w·ṣi ḏib·bāh hū ḵə·sîlWLC · 18

When words are many, sin is unavoidable…, but he who restrains his lips is wise.

דְּ֭בָרִים בְּרֹ֣ב פָּ֑שַׁע לֹ֣א יֶחְדַּל־ וְחֹשֵׂ֖ךְ שְׂפָתָ֣יו מַשְׂכִּֽיל׃ də·ḇā·rîm bə·rōḇ pā·ša‘ lō yeḥ·dal- wə·ḥō·śêḵ śə·p̄ā·ṯāw maś·kîlWLC · 19

20

The tongue of the righteous [is] choice silver, [but] the heart of the wicked [has] little worth.

𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤍𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤋𐤁 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤌𐤏𐤈

לְשׁ֣וֹן צַדִּ֑יק נִ֭בְחָר כֶּ֣סֶף לֵ֖ב רְשָׁעִ֣ים כִּמְעָֽט׃ lə·šō·wn ṣad·dîq niḇ·ḥār ke·sep̄ lêḇ rə·šā·‘îm kim·‘āṭWLC · 20

21

The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of judgment.

𐤔𐤐𐤕𐤉 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤉𐤓𐤏𐤅 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤎𐤓 𐤋𐤁

שִׂפְתֵ֣י צַ֭דִּיק יִרְע֣וּ רַבִּ֑ים וֶֽ֝אֱוִילִ֗ים יָמֽוּתוּ׃ בַּחֲסַר־ לֵ֥ב śip̄·ṯê ṣad·dîq yir·‘ū rab·bîm we·’ĕ·wî·lîm yā·mū·ṯū ba·ḥă·sar- lêḇWLC · 21

22

The blessing of the LORD… enriches, and He adds no sorrow to it.

𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤓 𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤑𐤁 𐤏𐤌𐤄

בִּרְכַּ֣ת יְ֭הוָה הִ֣יא תַעֲשִׁ֑יר יוֹסִ֖ף וְלֹֽא־ עֶ֣צֶב עִמָּֽהּ׃ bir·kaṯ Yah·weh hî ṯa·‘ă·šîr yō·w·sip̄ wə·lō- ‘e·ṣeḇ ‘im·māhWLC · 22

23

The fool delights in shameful conduct, but a man of understanding has wisdom.

𐤋𐤊𐤎𐤉𐤋 𐤊𐤔𐤇𐤅𐤒 𐤆𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤄

לִ֭כְסִיל כִּשְׂח֣וֹק זִמָּ֑ה עֲשׂ֣וֹת לְאִ֣ישׁ תְּבוּנָֽה׃ וְ֝חָכְמָ֗ה liḵ·sîl kiś·ḥō·wq zim·māh ‘ă·śō·wṯ lə·’îš tə·ḇū·nāh wə·ḥā·ḵə·māhWLC · 23

24

What the wicked [man]… dreads will overtake him, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.

𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤌𐤂𐤅𐤓𐤕 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤕𐤍

רָ֭שָׁע הִ֣יא מְגוֹרַ֣ת תְבוֹאֶ֑נּוּ וְתַאֲוַ֖ת צַדִּיקִ֣ים יִתֵּֽן׃ rā·šā‘ hî mə·ḡō·w·raṯ ṯə·ḇō·w·’en·nū wə·ṯa·’ă·waṯ ṣad·dî·qîm yit·tênWLC · 24

25

When the whirlwind passes, the wicked are no more, but the righteous are secure forever.

𐤎𐤅𐤐𐤄 𐤊𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤉𐤎𐤅𐤃 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌

ס֭וּפָה כַּעֲב֣וֹר רָשָׁ֑ע וְאֵ֣ין וְ֝צַדִּ֗יק יְס֣וֹד עוֹלָֽם׃ sū·p̄āh ka·‘ă·ḇō·wr rā·šā‘ wə·’ên wə·ṣad·dîq yə·sō·wḏ ‘ō·w·lāmWLC · 25

26

Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so [is] the slacker to those who send him.

𐤊𐤇𐤌𐤑 𐤋𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤏𐤔𐤍 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤑𐤋 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤉𐤅

כַּחֹ֤מֶץ׀ לַשִּׁנַּ֗יִם וְכֶעָשָׁ֥ן לָעֵינָ֑יִם כֵּ֥ן הֶ֝עָצֵ֗ל לְשֹׁלְחָֽיו׃ ka·ḥō·meṣ laš·šin·na·yim wə·ḵe·‘ā·šān lā·‘ê·nā·yim kên he·‘ā·ṣêl lə·šō·lə·ḥāwWLC · 26

27

The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be cut short.

𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤕𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤐 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤒𐤑𐤓𐤍𐤄

יִרְאַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה תּוֹסִ֣יף יָמִ֑ים וּשְׁנ֖וֹת רְשָׁעִ֣ים תִּקְצֹֽרְנָה׃ yir·’aṯ Yah·weh tō·w·sîp̄ yā·mîm ū·šə·nō·wṯ rə·šā·‘îm tiq·ṣō·rə·nāhWLC · 27

28

The hope of the righteous is joy, but the expectations of the wicked will perish.

𐤕𐤅𐤇𐤋𐤕 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤀𐤁𐤃

תּוֹחֶ֣לֶת צַדִּיקִ֣ים שִׂמְחָ֑ה וְתִקְוַ֖ת רְשָׁעִ֣ים תֹּאבֵֽד׃ tō·w·ḥe·leṯ ṣad·dî·qîm śim·ḥāh wə·ṯiq·waṯ rə·šā·‘îm tō·ḇêḏWLC · 28

29

The way of the LORD is a refuge to the upright, but destruction [awaits] those who do evil.

𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤆 𐤋𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤇𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤍

דֶּ֣רֶךְ יְהוָ֑ה מָע֣וֹז לַ֭תֹּם וּ֝מְחִתָּ֗ה לְפֹ֣עֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃ de·reḵ Yah·weh mā·‘ō·wz lat·tōm ū·mə·ḥit·tāh lə·p̄ō·‘ă·lê ’ā·wenWLC · 29

30

The righteous will never… be shaken, but the wicked will not inhabit the land.

צַדִּ֣יק לְעוֹלָ֣ם בַּל־ יִמּ֑וֹט וּ֝רְשָׁעִ֗ים לֹ֣א יִשְׁכְּנוּ־ אָֽרֶץ׃ ṣad·dîq lə·‘ō·w·lām bal- yim·mō·wṭ ū·rə·šā·‘îm lō yiš·kə·nū- ’ā·reṣWLC · 30

31

The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be cut out.

The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked is perverse.
