Chapter 16

The Reply of the Tongue Is from the LORD

1

The plans of the heart belong to man, but the reply of the tongue [is] from the LORD.

𐤌𐤏𐤓𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤁 𐤋𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

מַֽעַרְכֵי־ לֵ֑ב לְאָדָ֥ם מַעֲנֵ֥ה לָשֽׁוֹן׃ וּ֝מֵיְהוָ֗ה ma·‘ar·ḵê- lêḇ lə·’ā·ḏām ma·‘ă·nêh lā·šō·wn Yah·wehWLC · 1

All a man’s ways [are] pure in his own eyes, but his motives are weighed out by the LORD.

𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉 𐤆𐤊 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

כָּֽל־ אִ֭ישׁ דַּרְכֵי־ זַ֣ךְ בְּעֵינָ֑יו רוּח֣וֹת וְתֹכֵ֖ן יְהוָֽה׃ kāl- ’îš dar·ḵê- zaḵ bə·‘ê·nāw rū·ḥō·wṯ wə·ṯō·ḵên Yah·wehWLC · 2

Commit your works to the LORD and your plans will be achieved.

𐤂𐤋 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤍𐤅

גֹּ֣ל מַעֲשֶׂ֑יךָ אֶל־ יְהוָ֣ה מַחְשְׁבֹתֶֽיךָ׃ וְ֝יִכֹּ֗נוּ gōl ma·‘ă·śe·ḵā ’el- Yah·weh maḥ·šə·ḇō·ṯe·ḵā wə·yik·kō·nūWLC · 3

The LORD has made everything for His purpose— even the wicked for the day of disaster.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤐𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤓𐤏𐤄

יְ֭הוָה פָּעַ֣ל כֹּ֤ל לַֽמַּעֲנֵ֑הוּ וְגַם־ רָ֝שָׁ֗ע לְי֣וֹם רָעָֽה׃ Yah·weh pā·‘al kōl lam·ma·‘ă·nê·hū wə·ḡam- rā·šā‘ lə·yō·wm rā·‘āhWLC · 4

Everyone [who is] proud in heart is detestable to the LORD; be assured that… he will not go unpunished.

𐤊𐤋 𐤂𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤁 𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤃 𐤋𐤉𐤃 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤍𐤒𐤄

כָּל־ גְּבַהּ־ לֵ֑ב תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה יָ֥ד לְ֝יָ֗ד לֹ֣א יִנָּקֶֽה׃ kāl- gə·ḇah- lêḇ tō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ Yah·weh yāḏ lə·yāḏ lō yin·nā·qehWLC · 5

6

By loving devotion and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the LORD [one] turns aside from evil.

𐤁𐤇𐤎𐤃 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤕 𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤊𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤎𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤓𐤏

בְּחֶ֣סֶד וֶ֭אֱמֶת עָוֺ֑ן יְכֻפַּ֣ר וּבְיִרְאַ֥ת יְ֝הוָ֗ה ס֣וּר מֵרָֽע׃ bə·ḥe·seḏ we·’ĕ·meṯ ‘ā·wōn yə·ḵup·par ū·ḇə·yir·’aṯ Yah·weh sūr mê·rā‘WLC · 6

When a man’s ways please the LORD, He makes even [the man’s] enemies live at peace with him.

𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤂𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤅

אִ֑ישׁ דַּרְכֵי־ בִּרְצ֣וֹת יְ֭הוָה גַּם־ א֝וֹיְבָ֗יו יַשְׁלִ֥ם אִתּֽוֹ׃ ’îš dar·ḵê- bir·ṣō·wṯ Yah·weh gam- ’ō·wy·ḇāw yaš·lim ’it·tōwWLC · 7

Better a little with righteousness than great gain with injustice…

𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤌𐤏𐤈 𐤁𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤄 𐤌𐤓𐤁 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈

טוֹב־ מְ֭עַט בִּצְדָקָ֑ה מֵרֹ֥ב תְּ֝בוּא֗וֹת בְּלֹ֣א מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ ṭō·wḇ- mə·‘aṭ biṣ·ḏā·qāh mê·rōḇ tə·ḇū·’ō·wṯ bə·lō miš·pāṭWLC · 8

A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.

𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤋𐤁 𐤉𐤇𐤔𐤁 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤊𐤉𐤍 𐤑𐤏𐤃𐤅

אָ֭דָם לֵ֣ב יְחַשֵּׁ֣ב דַּרְכּ֑וֹ וַֽ֝יהוָ֗ה יָכִ֥ין צַעֲדֽוֹ׃ ’ā·ḏām lêḇ yə·ḥaš·šêḇ dar·kōw Yah·weh yā·ḵîn ṣa·‘ă·ḏōwWLC · 9

10

A divine verdict is on the lips of a king; his mouth must not betray justice.

קֶ֤סֶם׀ עַֽל־ שִׂפְתֵי־ מֶ֑לֶךְ פִּֽיו׃ לֹ֣א יִמְעַל־ בְּ֝מִשְׁפָּ֗ט qe·sem ‘al- śip̄·ṯê- me·leḵ pîw lō yim·‘al- bə·miš·pāṭWLC · 10

11

Honest scales and balances [are from] the LORD; all the weights in the bag are His concern.

𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤐𐤋𐤎 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤉𐤎 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄𐤅

מִ֭שְׁפָּט פֶּ֤לֶס׀ וּמֹאזְנֵ֣י לַֽיהוָ֑ה כָּל־ אַבְנֵי־ כִֽיס׃ מַ֝עֲשֵׂ֗הוּ miš·pāṭ pe·les ū·mō·zə·nê Yah·weh kāl- ’aḇ·nê- ḵîs ma·‘ă·śê·hūWLC · 11

Wicked behavior is detestable for kings, for a throne is established through righteousness.

רֶ֑שַׁע עֲשׂ֣וֹת תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת מְ֭לָכִים כִּ֥י כִּסֵּֽא׃ יִכּ֥וֹן בִ֝צְדָקָ֗ה re·ša‘ ‘ă·śō·wṯ tō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ mə·lā·ḵîm kî kis·sê yik·kō·wn ḇiṣ·ḏā·qāhWLC · 12

Righteous lips are a king’s delight, and he who speaks honestly is beloved.

𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤔𐤐𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤀𐤄𐤁

צֶ֑דֶק שִׂפְתֵי־ מְ֭לָכִים רְצ֣וֹן וְדֹבֵ֖ר יְשָׁרִ֣ים יֶאֱהָֽב׃ ṣe·ḏeq śip̄·ṯê- mə·lā·ḵîm rə·ṣō·wn wə·ḏō·ḇêr yə·šā·rîm ye·’ĕ·hāḇWLC · 13

14

The wrath of a king is a messenger of death, but a wise man will pacify it.

𐤇𐤌𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤇𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤊𐤐𐤓𐤍𐤄

חֲמַת־ מֶ֥לֶךְ מַלְאֲכֵי־ מָ֑וֶת חָכָ֣ם וְאִ֖ישׁ יְכַפְּרֶֽנָּה׃ ḥă·maṯ- me·leḵ mal·’ă·ḵê- mā·weṯ ḥā·ḵām wə·’îš yə·ḵap·pə·ren·nāhWLC · 14

15

When a king’s face brightens, there is life; his favor is like a rain cloud in spring.

מֶ֥לֶךְ פְּנֵי־ בְּאוֹר־ חַיִּ֑ים וּ֝רְצוֹנ֗וֹ כְּעָ֣ב מַלְקֽוֹשׁ׃ me·leḵ pə·nê- bə·’ō·wr- ḥay·yîm ū·rə·ṣō·w·nōw kə·‘āḇ mal·qō·wōšWLC · 15

16

How much better to acquire wisdom than gold! To gain understanding is more desirable than silver.

מַה־ טּ֥וֹב קְֽנֹה־ חָכְמָ֗ה מֵחָר֑וּץ וּקְנ֥וֹת בִּ֝ינָ֗ה נִבְחָ֥ר מִכָּֽסֶף׃ mah- ṭō·wḇ qə·nōh- ḥāḵ·māh mê·ḥā·rūṣ ū·qə·nō·wṯ bî·nāh niḇ·ḥār mik·kā·sep̄WLC · 16

17

The highway of the upright leads away from evil; he who guards his way protects his life.

𐤌𐤎𐤋𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤎𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤓𐤏 𐤍𐤑𐤓 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅

מְסִלַּ֣ת יְ֭שָׁרִים ס֣וּר מֵרָ֑ע נֹצֵ֥ר דַּרְכּֽוֹ׃ שֹׁמֵ֥ר נַ֝פְשׁ֗וֹ mə·sil·laṯ yə·šā·rîm sūr mê·rā‘ nō·ṣêr dar·kōw šō·mêr nap̄·šōwWLC · 17

18

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤂𐤁𐤄 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤍

גָּא֑וֹן לִפְנֵי־ שֶׁ֥בֶר גֹּ֣בַהּ רֽוּחַ׃ וְלִפְנֵ֥י כִ֝שָּׁל֗וֹן gā·’ō·wn lip̄·nê- še·ḇer gō·ḇah rū·aḥ wə·lip̄·nê ḵiš·šā·lō·wnWLC · 18

It is better to be lowly in spirit among the humble than to divide the spoil with the proud.

ט֣וֹב שְׁפַל־ ר֭וּחַ אֶת־ עֲנִיִּים מֵֽחַלֵּ֥ק שָׁ֝לָ֗ל אֶת־ גֵּאִֽים׃ ṭō·wḇ šə·p̄al- rū·aḥ ’eṯ- ʿă·nī·yīm mê·ḥal·lêq šā·lāl ’eṯ- gê·’îmWLC · 19

20

Whoever heeds… instruction will find success, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.

מַשְׂכִּ֣יל עַל־ דָּ֭בָר יִמְצָא־ ט֑וֹב אַשְׁרָֽיו׃ וּבוֹטֵ֖חַ בַּיהוָ֣ה maś·kîl ‘al- dā·ḇār yim·ṣā- ṭō·wḇ ’aš·rāw ū·ḇō·w·ṭê·aḥ Yah·wehWLC · 20

21

The wise in heart are called discerning, and pleasant speech promotes instruction.

𐤋𐤇𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤁 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤍𐤁𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤒 𐤔𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤐 𐤋𐤒𐤇

לַחֲכַם־ לֵ֭ב יִקָּרֵ֣א נָב֑וֹן וּמֶ֥תֶק שְׂ֝פָתַ֗יִם יֹסִ֥יף לֶֽקַח׃ la·ḥă·ḵam- lêḇ yiq·qā·rê nā·ḇō·wn ū·me·ṯeq śə·p̲ā·t̲a·yim yō·sîp̄ le·qaḥWLC · 21

22

Understanding is a fountain of life to its possessor, but the discipline of fools is folly.

שֵׂ֣כֶל מְק֣וֹר חַ֭יִּים בְּעָלָ֑יו וּמוּסַ֖ר אֱוִלִ֣ים אִוֶּֽלֶת׃ śê·ḵel mə·qō·wr ḥay·yîm bə·‘ā·lāw ū·mū·sar ’ĕ·wi·lîm ’iw·we·leṯWLC · 22

23

The heart of the wise [man] instructs his mouth and adds persuasiveness to his lips.

לֵ֣ב חָ֭כָם יַשְׂכִּ֣יל פִּ֑יהוּ יֹסִ֥יף לֶֽקַח׃ וְעַל־ שְׂ֝פָתָ֗יו lêḇ ḥā·ḵām yaś·kîl pî·hū yō·sîp̄ le·qaḥ wə·‘a·lś- śə·p̲ā·t̲āywWLC · 23

Pleasant words are a honeycomb…, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

נֹ֑עַם אִמְרֵי־ צוּף־ דְּ֭בַשׁ מָת֥וֹק לַ֝נֶּפֶשׁ וּמַרְפֵּ֥א לָעָֽצֶם׃ nō·‘am ’im·rê- ṣūp̄- də·ḇaš mā·ṯō·wq lan·ne·p̄eš ū·mar·pê lā·‘ā·ṣemWLC · 24

25

There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.

יֵ֤שׁ דֶּ֣רֶךְ יָ֭שָׁר לִפְנֵי־ אִ֑ישׁ וְ֝אַחֲרִיתָ֗הּ דַּרְכֵי־ מָֽוֶת׃ yêš de·reḵ yā·šār lip̄·nê- ’îš wə·’a·ḥă·rî·ṯāh dar·ḵê- mā·weṯWLC · 25

A worker’s appetite works for him because his hunger drives him onward.

𐤏𐤌𐤋 𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤊𐤐 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅

עָ֭מֵל נֶ֣פֶשׁ עָ֣מְלָה לּ֑וֹ כִּֽי־ פִּֽיהוּ׃ אָכַ֖ף עָלָ֣יו ‘ā·mêl ne·p̄eš ‘ā·mə·lāh lōw kî- pî·hū ’ā·ḵap̄ ‘ā·lāwWLC · 26

27

A worthless man digs up evil, vvv and his speech is like a scorching fire.

𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤊𐤓𐤄 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤑𐤓𐤁𐤕 𐤊𐤀𐤔

בְּ֭לִיַּעַל אִ֣ישׁ כֹּרֶ֣ה רָעָ֑ה וְעַל־ שְׂפָתָיו צָרָֽבֶת׃ כְּאֵ֣שׁ bə·lî·ya·‘al ’îš kō·reh rā·‘āh wə·‘al- śə·p̄å̄·ṯå̄w ṣā·rā·ḇeṯ kə·’êšWLC · 27

28

A perverse man spreads dissension, and a gossip divides close friends.

𐤕𐤄𐤐𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤌𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤍𐤓𐤂𐤍 𐤌𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤐

תַּ֭הְפֻּכוֹת אִ֣ישׁ יְשַׁלַּ֣ח מָד֑וֹן וְ֝נִרְגָּ֗ן מַפְרִ֥יד אַלּֽוּף׃ tah·pu·ḵō·wṯ ’îš yə·šal·laḥ mā·ḏō·wn wə·nir·gå̄n map̄·rîḏ ’al·lūp̄WLC · 28

29

A violent man entices his neighbor and leads him down a path [that is] not good.

𐤇𐤌𐤎 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤄 𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤅 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤈𐤅𐤁

חָ֭מָס אִ֣ישׁ יְפַתֶּ֣ה רֵעֵ֑הוּ וְ֝הוֹלִיכ֗וֹ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ לֹא־ טֽוֹב׃ ḥā·mās ’îš yə·p̄at·teh rê·‘ê·hū wə·hō·w·lî·ḵōw bə·ḏe·reḵ lō- ṭō·wḇWLC · 29

30

He who winks his eye devises perversity; he who purses his lips is bent on evil.

𐤏𐤑𐤄 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤇𐤔𐤁 𐤕𐤄𐤐𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤒𐤓𐤑 𐤔𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤓𐤏𐤄

עֹצֶ֣ה עֵ֭ינָיו לַחְשֹׁ֣ב תַּהְפֻּכ֑וֹת קֹרֵ֥ץ שְׂ֝פָתָ֗יו כִּלָּ֥ה רָעָֽה׃ ‘ō·ṣeh ‘ê·nāw laḥ·šōḇ tah·pu·ḵō·wṯ qō·rêṣ śə·p̲ā·t̲āyw kil·lāh rā·‘āhWLC · 30

31

Gray hair [is] a crown of glory; it is attained along the path of righteousness.

𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤄 𐤏𐤈𐤓𐤕 𐤕𐤐𐤀𐤓𐤕 𐤕𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤄

שֵׂיבָ֑ה עֲטֶ֣רֶת תִּפְאֶ֣רֶת תִּמָּצֵֽא׃ בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ צְ֝דָקָ֗ה śê·ḇāh ‘ă·ṭe·reṯ tip̄·’e·reṯ tim·mā·ṣê bə·ḏe·reḵ ṣə·ḏā·qāhWLC · 31

32

[He who is] slow to anger [is] better than a warrior, and he who controls his temper [is greater] than one who captures a city.

אֶ֣רֶךְ אַ֭פַּיִם ט֤וֹב מִגִּבּ֑וֹר וּמֹשֵׁ֥ל בְּ֝רוּח֗וֹ מִלֹּכֵ֥ד עִֽיר׃ ’e·reḵ ’ap·pa·yim ṭō·wḇ mig·gib·bō·wr ū·mō·šêl bə·rū·ḥōw mil·lō·ḵêḏ ‘îrWLC · 32

33

The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.
