Chapter 2
The Benefits of Wisdom
1
My son, if you accept my words and hide my commandments within you,

בְּ֭נִי אִם־ תִּקַּ֣ח אֲמָרָ֑י תִּצְפֹּ֥ן וּ֝מִצְוֺתַ֗י אִתָּֽךְ׃ bə·nî ’im- tiq·qaḥ ’ă·mā·rāy tiṣ·pōn ū·miṣ·wō·ṯay ’it·tāḵ — WLC · 1

if you incline your ear to wisdom and direct your heart to understanding,
𐤋𐤄𐤒𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤊 𐤋𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤈𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤊 𐤋𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤄
לְהַקְשִׁ֣יב אָזְנֶ֑ךָ לַֽחָכְמָ֣ה תַּטֶּ֥ה לִ֝בְּךָ֗ לַתְּבוּנָֽה׃ lə·haq·šîḇ ’ā·zə·ne·ḵā la·ḥā·ḵə·māh taṭ·ṭeh lib·bə·ḵā lat·tə·ḇū·nāh — WLC · 2

if you truly call out to insight and lift your voice to understanding,
𐤀𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤕𐤕𐤍 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤄
אִ֣ם כִּ֤י תִקְרָ֑א לַבִּינָ֣ה תִּתֵּ֥ן קוֹלֶֽךָ׃ לַ֝תְּבוּנָ֗ה ’im kî ṯiq·rā lab·bî·nāh tit·tên qō·w·le·ḵā lat·tə·ḇū·nāh — WLC · 3

if you seek it like silver and search it out like hidden treasure,
𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤁𐤒𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤕𐤇𐤐𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤌𐤈𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤉𐤌
אִם־ תְּבַקְשֶׁ֥נָּה כַכָּ֑סֶף תַּחְפְּשֶֽׂנָּה׃ וְֽכַמַּטְמוֹנִ֥ים ’im- tə·ḇaq·šen·nāh ḵak·kā·sep̄ taḥ·pə·śen·nāh wə·ḵam·maṭ·mō·w·nîm — WLC · 4

then you will discern the fear of the LORD and discover the knowledge of God.
𐤀𐤆 𐤕𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤕𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤅𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌
אָ֗ז תָּ֭בִין יִרְאַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה תִּמְצָֽא׃ וְדַ֖עַת אֱלֹהִ֣ים ’āz tā·ḇîn yir·’aṯ Yah·weh tim·ṣā wə·ḏa·‘aṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 5

For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤐𐤉𐤅 𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤄
כִּֽי־ יְ֭הוָה יִתֵּ֣ן חָכְמָ֑ה מִ֝פִּ֗יו דַּ֣עַת וּתְבוּנָֽה׃ kî- Yah·weh yit·tên ḥāḵ·māh mip·pîw da·‘aṯ ū·ṯə·ḇū·nāh — WLC · 6

He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk with integrity,
𐤅𐤑𐤐𐤍 𐤕𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤂𐤍 𐤋𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤌
וְצָפַן תּוּשִׁיָּ֑ה לַ֭יְשָׁרִים מָ֝גֵ֗ן לְהֹ֣לְכֵי תֹֽם׃ wə·ṣå̄·p̄an tū·šî·yāh lay·šā·rîm mā·ḡên lə·hō·lə·ḵê ṯōm — WLC · 7

to guard the paths of justice and protect the way of His saints.
𐤋𐤍𐤑𐤓 𐤀𐤓𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤇𐤎𐤉𐤃𐤅
לִ֭נְצֹר אָרְח֣וֹת מִשְׁפָּ֑ט יִשְׁמֹֽר׃ וְדֶ֖רֶךְ חֲסִידוֹ lin·ṣōr ’ā·rə·ḥō·wṯ miš·pāṭ yiš·mōr wə·ḏe·reḵ ḥă·sī·ḏō — WLC · 8

Then you will discern righteousness and justice and equity— every good path.
𐤀𐤆 𐤕𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤌𐤏𐤂𐤋
אָ֗ז תָּ֭בִין צֶ֣דֶק וּמִשְׁפָּ֑ט וּ֝מֵישָׁרִ֗ים כָּל־ טֽוֹב׃ מַעְגַּל־ ’āz tā·ḇîn ṣe·ḏeq ū·miš·pāṭ ū·mê·šā·rîm kāl- ṭō·wḇ ma‘·gal- — WLC · 9

For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will delight your soul.
𐤊𐤉 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤋𐤁𐤊 𐤅𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤍𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤊
כִּֽי־ חָכְמָ֣ה תָב֣וֹא בְלִבֶּ֑ךָ וְ֝דַ֗עַת יִנְעָֽם׃ לְֽנַפְשְׁךָ֥ kî- ḥāḵ·māh ṯā·ḇō·w ḇə·lib·be·ḵā wə·ḏa·‘aṯ yin·‘ām lə·nap̄·šə·ḵā — WLC · 10

Discretion will watch over you,… and understanding will guard you,
𐤌𐤆𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤕𐤍𐤑𐤓𐤊𐤄
מְ֭זִמָּה תִּשְׁמֹ֥ר עָלֶ֗יךָ תְּבוּנָ֥ה תִנְצְרֶֽכָּה׃ mə·zim·māh tiš·mōr ‘ā·le·ḵā tə·ḇū·nāh ṯin·ṣə·rek·kāh — WLC · 11

to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perversity,
𐤋𐤄𐤑𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤓𐤏 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤕𐤄𐤐𐤊𐤅𐤕
לְ֭הַצִּ֣ילְךָ מִדֶּ֣רֶךְ רָ֑ע מֵ֝אִ֗ישׁ מְדַבֵּ֥ר תַּהְפֻּכֽוֹת׃ lə·haṣ·ṣî·lə·ḵā mid·de·reḵ rā‘ mê·’îš mə·ḏab·bêr tah·pu·ḵō·wṯ — WLC · 12

from those who leave the straight paths to walk in the ways of darkness,
𐤄𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤓𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉 𐤇𐤔𐤊
הַ֭עֹ֣זְבִים יֹ֑שֶׁר אָרְח֣וֹת לָ֝לֶ֗כֶת בְּדַרְכֵי־ חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ ha·‘ō·zə·ḇîm yō·šer ’ā·rə·ḥō·wṯ lā·le·ḵeṯ bə·ḏar·ḵê- ḥō·šeḵ — WLC · 13

from those who enjoy doing evil and rejoice in the twistedness of evil,
𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤏 𐤉𐤂𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤕𐤄𐤐𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤏
הַ֭שְּׂמֵחִים לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת רָ֑ע יָ֝גִ֗ילוּ בְּֽתַהְפֻּכ֥וֹת רָֽע׃ haś·śə·mê·ḥîm la·‘ă·śō·wṯ rā‘ yā·ḡî·lū bə·ṯah·pu·ḵō·wṯ rā‘ — WLC · 14
15
whose paths are crooked and whose ways are devious.

אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָרְחֹתֵיהֶ֣ם עִקְּשִׁ֑ים בְּמַעְגְּלוֹתָֽם׃ וּ֝נְלוֹזִ֗ים ’ă·šer ’ā·rə·ḥō·ṯê·hem ‘iq·qə·šîm bə·ma‘·gə·lō·w·ṯām ū·nə·lō·w·zîm — WLC · 15
16
It will rescue you from the forbidden woman, from the stranger with seductive words
𐤋𐤄𐤑𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤆𐤓𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤍𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤇𐤋𐤉𐤒𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤄
לְ֭הַצִּ֣ילְךָ זָרָ֑ה מֵאִשָּׁ֣ה מִ֝נָּכְרִיָּ֗ה הֶחֱלִֽיקָה׃ אֲמָרֶ֥יהָ lə·haṣ·ṣî·lə·ḵā zā·rāh mê·’iš·šāh min·nā·ḵə·rî·yāh he·ḥĕ·lî·qāh ’ă·mā·re·hā — WLC · 16

who abandons the partner of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God.
𐤄𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤐 𐤍𐤏𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤊𐤇𐤄 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤄
הַ֭עֹזֶבֶת אַלּ֣וּף נְעוּרֶ֑יהָ וְאֶת־ שָׁכֵֽחָה׃ בְּרִ֖ית אֱלֹהֶ֣יהָ ha·‘ō·ze·ḇeṯ ’al·lūp̄ nə·‘ū·re·hā wə·’eṯ- šā·ḵê·ḥāh bə·rîṯ ’ĕ·lō·he·hā — WLC · 17
18
For her house sinks down to death, and her tracks to the departed spirits.
𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤇𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤏𐤂𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤓𐤐𐤀𐤉𐤌
כִּ֤י בֵּיתָ֑הּ שָׁ֣חָה אֶל־ מָ֣וֶת מַעְגְּלֹתֶֽיהָ׃ וְאֶל־ רְ֝פָאִ֗ים kî bê·ṯāh šā·ḥāh ’el- mā·weṯ ma‘·gə·lō·ṯe·hā wə·’el- rə·p̄ā·’îm — WLC · 18
19
None who go to her… return [or] negotiate the paths of life.
𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤂𐤅 𐤀𐤓𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌
כָּל־ בָּ֭אֶיהָ לֹ֣א יְשׁוּב֑וּן וְלֹֽא־ יַ֝שִּׂ֗יגוּ אָרְח֥וֹת חַיִּֽים׃ kāl- bā·’e·hā lō yə·šū·ḇūn wə·lō- yaś·śî·ḡū ’ā·rə·ḥō·wṯ ḥay·yîm — WLC · 19
20
So you will follow in the ways of the good, and keep to the paths of the righteous.
𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤕𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌
לְמַ֗עַן תֵּ֭לֵךְ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ טוֹבִ֑ים תִּשְׁמֹֽר׃ וְאָרְח֖וֹת צַדִּיקִ֣ים lə·ma·‘an tê·lêḵ bə·ḏe·reḵ ṭō·w·ḇîm tiš·mōr wə·’ā·rə·ḥō·wṯ ṣad·dî·qîm — WLC · 20
21
For the upright will inhabit the land, and the blameless will remain in it;
𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤄
כִּֽי־ יְשָׁרִ֥ים יִשְׁכְּנוּ אָ֑רֶץ וּ֝תְמִימִ֗ים יִוָּ֥תְרוּ בָֽהּ׃ kî- yə·šā·rîm yiš·kə·nū ’ā·reṣ ū·ṯə·mî·mîm yiw·wā·ṯə·rū ḇāh — WLC · 21
22
but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful {will} be uprooted.

וּ֭רְשָׁעִים יִכָּרֵ֑תוּ מִמֶּֽנָּה׃פ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ וּ֝בוֹגְדִ֗ים יִסְּח֥וּ ū·rə·šā·‘îm yik·kā·rê·ṯū mim·men·nāh mê·’e·reṣ ū·ḇō·wḡ·ḏîm yis·sə·ḥū — WLC · 22
