Chapter 3
Trust in the LORD with All Your Heart
1
My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments;

בְּ֭נִי אַל־ תִּשְׁכָּ֑ח תּוֹרָתִ֣י לִבֶּֽךָ׃ יִצֹּ֥ר וּ֝מִצְוֺתַ֗י bə·nî ’al- tiš·kāḥ tō·w·rā·ṯî lib·be·ḵā yiṣ·ṣōr ū·miṣ·wō·ṯay — WLC · 1

for they will add length to your days, years and peace to your life

כִּ֤י יוֹסִ֥יפוּ אֹ֣רֶךְ יָ֭מִים וּשְׁנ֣וֹת וְ֝שָׁל֗וֹם חַיִּ֑ים לָֽךְ׃ kî yō·w·sî·p̄ū ’ō·reḵ yā·mîm ū·šə·nō·wṯ wə·šā·lō·wm ḥay·yîm lāḵ — WLC · 2

Never let loving devotion or faithfulness leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.

אַֽל־ חֶ֥סֶד וֶאֱמֶ֗ת יַעַ֫זְבֻ֥ךָ קָשְׁרֵ֥ם עַל־ גַּרְגְּרוֹתֶ֑יךָ כָּ֝תְבֵ֗ם עַל־ ל֥וּחַ לִבֶּֽךָ׃ ’al- ḥe·seḏ we·’ĕ·meṯ ya·‘az·ḇu·ḵā qā·šə·rêm ‘al- gar·gə·rō·w·ṯe·ḵā kā·ṯə·ḇêm ‘al- lū·aḥ lib·be·ḵā — WLC · 3

Then you will find favor and high regard… in the sight of God and man.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;

בְּטַ֣ח אֶל־ יְ֭הוָה בְּכָל־ לִבֶּ֑ךָ תִּשָּׁעֵֽן׃ אַל־ וְאֶל־ בִּֽ֝ינָתְךָ֗ bə·ṭaḥ ’el- Yah·weh bə·ḵāl lib·be·ḵā tiš·šā·‘ên ’al- wə·’el- bî·nā·ṯə·ḵā — WLC · 5

in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths {straight}.

Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil.

תְּהִ֣י אַל־ חָכָ֣ם בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ יְרָ֥א אֶת־ יְ֝הוָ֗ה וְס֣וּר מֵרָֽע׃ tə·hî ’al- ḥā·ḵām bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā yə·rā ’eṯ- Yah·weh wə·sūr mê·rā‘ — WLC · 7

This will bring healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.

Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your crops;

כַּבֵּ֣ד אֶת־ יְ֭הוָה מֵהוֹנֶ֑ךָ וּ֝מֵרֵאשִׁ֗ית כָּל־ תְּבוּאָתֶֽךָ׃ kab·bêḏ ’eṯ- Yah·weh mê·hō·w·ne·ḵā ū·mê·rê·šîṯ kāl- tə·ḇū·’ā·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 9

then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.

אֲסָמֶ֣יךָ וְיִמָּלְא֣וּ שָׂבָ֑ע יְקָבֶ֥יךָ יִפְרֹֽצוּ׃פ וְ֝תִיר֗וֹשׁ ’ă·sā·me·ḵā wə·yim·mā·lə·’ū śā·ḇā‘ yə·qā·ḇe·ḵā yip̄·rō·ṣū wə·ṯî·rō·wōš — WLC · 10

My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD, and do not loathe His rebuke;

בְּנִ֣י אַל־ תִּמְאָ֑ס מוּסַ֣ר יְ֭הוָה וְאַל־ תָּ֝קֹ֗ץ בְּתוֹכַחְתּֽוֹ׃ bə·nî ’al- tim·’ās mū·sar Yah·weh wə·’al- tā·qōṣ bə·ṯō·w·ḵaḥ·tōw — WLC · 11

for the LORD disciplines the one He loves, as [does] a father the son [in whom] he delights.

כִּ֤י אֶ֥ת יְהוָ֣ה יוֹכִ֑יחַ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֶאֱהַ֣ב וּ֝כְאָ֗ב אֶת־ בֵּ֥ן יִרְצֶֽה׃ kî ’eṯ Yah·weh yō·w·ḵî·aḥ ’ă·šer ye·’ĕ·haḇ ū·ḵə·’āḇ ’eṯ- bên yir·ṣeh — WLC · 12
The Blessings of Wisdom

Blessed [is] the man who finds wisdom, the man who acquires understanding,
𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤐𐤉𐤒 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤄
אַשְׁרֵ֣י אָ֭דָם מָצָ֣א חָכְמָ֑ה וְ֝אָדָ֗ם יָפִ֥יק תְּבוּנָֽה׃ ’aš·rê ’ā·ḏām mā·ṣā ḥāḵ·māh wə·’ā·ḏām yā·p̄îq tə·ḇū·nāh — WLC · 13

for she is more profitable… than silver, and her gain [is better] than fine gold.

כִּ֤י ט֣וֹב סַ֭חְרָהּ מִסְּחַר־ כָּ֑סֶף תְּבוּאָתָֽהּ׃ וּ֝מֵחָר֗וּץ kî ṭō·wḇ saḥ·rāh mis·sə·ḥar- kā·sep̄ tə·ḇū·’ā·ṯāh ū·mê·ḥā·rūṣ — WLC · 14

She is more precious than rubies; nothing… you desire compares with her.

הִ֭יא יְקָ֣רָה מִפְּנִיִּים וְכָל־ לֹ֣א חֲ֝פָצֶ֗יךָ יִֽשְׁווּ־ בָֽהּ׃ hî yə·qā·rāh mip·pə·nī·yīm wə·ḵāl lō ḥă·p̄ā·ṣe·ḵā yiš·wū- ḇāh — WLC · 15

Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand [are] riches and honor.

אֹ֣רֶךְ יָ֭מִים בִּֽימִינָ֑הּ בִּ֝שְׂמֹאולָ֗הּ עֹ֣שֶׁר וְכָבֽוֹד׃ ’ō·reḵ yā·mîm bî·mî·nāh biś·mō·w·lāh ‘ō·šer wə·ḵā·ḇō·wḏ — WLC · 16

All her ways… are pleasant, and all her paths [are] peaceful.

דְּרָכֶ֥יהָ דַרְכֵי־ נֹ֑עַם וְֽכָל־ נְתִ֖יבוֹתֶ֣יהָ שָׁלֽוֹם׃ də·rā·ḵe·hā ḏar·ḵê- nō·‘am wə·ḵāl nə·ṯî·ḇō·w·ṯe·hā šā·lō·wm — WLC · 17

She is a tree of life to those who embrace her, and those who lay hold of her are blessed.

הִ֭יא עֵץ־ חַיִּ֣ים לַמַּחֲזִיקִ֣ים בָּ֑הּ וְֽתֹמְכֶ֥יהָ מְאֻשָּֽׁר׃פ hî ‘êṣ- ḥay·yîm lam·ma·ḥă·zî·qîm bāh wə·ṯō·mə·ḵe·hā mə·’uš·šār — WLC · 18

The LORD founded the earth by wisdom and established the heavens by understanding.

יְֽהוָ֗ה יָֽסַד־ אָ֑רֶץ בְּחָכְמָ֥ה כּוֹנֵ֥ן שָׁ֝מַ֗יִם בִּתְבוּנָֽה׃ Yah·weh yā·saḏ- ’ā·reṣ bə·ḥā·ḵə·māh kō·w·nên šā·ma·yim biṯ·ḇū·nāh — WLC · 19

By His knowledge the watery depths were broken open, and the clouds dripped with dew.

בְּ֭דַעְתּוֹ תְּהוֹמ֣וֹת נִבְקָ֑עוּ וּ֝שְׁחָקִ֗ים יִרְעֲפוּ־ טָֽל׃ bə·ḏa‘·tōw tə·hō·w·mō·wṯ niḇ·qā·‘ū ū·šə·ḥā·qîm yir·‘ă·p̄ū- ṭāl — WLC · 20

My son, do not lose sight of this: Preserve sound judgment and discernment.

בְּ֭נִי אַל־ יָלֻ֣זוּ מֵעֵינֶ֑יךָ נְצֹ֥ר תֻּ֝שִׁיָּ֗ה וּמְזִמָּֽה׃ bə·nî ’al- yā·lu·zū mê·‘ê·ne·ḵā nə·ṣōr tu·šî·yāh ū·mə·zim·māh — WLC · 21

They will be life to your soul and adornment to your neck.

Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.

אָ֤ז תֵּלֵ֣ךְ דַּרְכֶּ֑ךָ לָבֶ֣טַח וְ֝רַגְלְךָ֗ לֹ֣א תִגּֽוֹף׃ ’āz tê·lêḵ dar·ke·ḵā lā·ḇe·ṭaḥ wə·raḡ·lə·ḵā lō ṯig·gō·wp̄ — WLC · 23

When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you rest, your sleep will be sweet.

אִם־ תִּשְׁכַּ֥ב לֹֽא־ תִפְחָ֑ד וְ֝שָׁכַבְתָּ֗ שְׁנָתֶֽךָ׃ וְֽעָרְבָ֥ה ’im- tiš·kaḇ lō- ṯip̄·ḥāḏ wə·šā·ḵaḇ·tā šə·nā·ṯe·ḵā wə·‘ā·rə·ḇāh — WLC · 24

Do not fear sudden danger or the ruin that overtakes the wicked,

אַל־ תִּ֭ירָא פִּתְאֹ֑ם מִפַּ֣חַד וּמִשֹּׁאַ֥ת כִּ֣י תָבֹֽא׃ רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים ’al- tî·rā piṯ·’ōm mip·pa·ḥaḏ ū·miš·šō·’aṯ kî ṯā·ḇō rə·šā·‘îm — WLC · 25

for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from the snare.

Do not withhold good from the deserving when it is within your power to act.

אַל־ תִּמְנַע־ ט֥וֹב מִבְּעָלָ֑יו בִּהְי֨וֹת יָדֶיךָ לְאֵ֖ל לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃ ’al- tim·na‘- ṭō·wḇ mib·bə·‘ā·lāw bih·yō·wṯ yå̄·ḏɛ·ḵå̄ lə·’êl la·‘ă·śō·wṯ — WLC · 27

Do not tell your neighbor, “Come back tomorrow [and] I will provide”— when you already have the means…

אַל־ תֹּ֘אמַ֤ר לְרֵעֶיךָ לֵ֣ךְ וָ֭שׁוּב וּמָחָ֥ר אֶתֵּ֗ן וְיֵ֣שׁ אִתָּֽךְ׃ ’al- tō·mar lə·rē·ʿɛ·ḵå̄ lêḵ wā·šūḇ ū·mā·ḥār ’et·tên wə·yêš ’it·tāḵ — WLC · 28

Do not devise evil against your neighbor, for he trustfully dwells beside you.

אַל־ רָעָ֑ה תַּחֲרֹ֣שׁ עַל־ רֵעֲךָ֣ וְהֽוּא־ לָבֶ֣טַח יוֹשֵׁ֖ב אִתָּֽךְ׃ ’al- rā·‘āh ta·ḥă·rōš ‘al- rê·‘ă·ḵā wə·hū- lā·ḇe·ṭaḥ yō·wō·šêḇ ’it·tāḵ — WLC · 29

Do not accuse… a man without cause, when he has done you no harm.

אַל־ תָּרוֹב עִם־ אָדָ֣ם חִנָּ֑ם אִם־ גְמָלְךָ֣ לֹ֖א רָעָֽה׃ ’al- tå̄·rōḇ ‘im- ’ā·ḏām ḥin·nām ’im- ḡə·mā·lə·ḵā lō rā·‘āh — WLC · 30

Do not envy a violent… man or choose any of his ways;

אַל־ תְּ֭קַנֵּא חָמָ֑ס וְאַל־ בְּאִ֣ישׁ תִּ֝בְחַ֗ר בְּכָל־ דְּרָכָֽיו׃ ’al- tə·qan·nê ḥā·mās wə·’al- bə·’îš tiḇ·ḥar bə·ḵāl də·rā·ḵāw — WLC · 31

for the LORD detests the perverse…, but He is a friend to the upright.

The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but He blesses the home of the righteous.
